This intimate space has an elegant and romanitc charm matched by outstanding, complex cocktails and knowledgeable beverage staff. It is unfortunate that the management has chosen to offer such a banal and anemic happy hour, especially relative to local competitors such as Copa d'Oro. Even so, the prices for the really good stuff are fair if somewhat high, making Chloe a great choice later in the evening - particularly for couples. read more

Smaller than what I expected, but very upscale bar. Pretty attentive waiters on that crossroad between getting you your second drink but not interrupting conversation. The crowd seemed more early 30's than I anticipated, but it was a nice place to chat with friends. We arrived around 11PM on a Friday night and were able to sit down at the couches (amidst a couple and another group). The drinks were average Santa Monica prices ($15 for a cocktail). We only stayed for a drink, because we wanted something younger and slightly more lively, but it was a great place to relax and reconnect with friends! This is a true loung/bar with good food in the middle of Santa Monica. But don't worry, this is not a place that tourists would know about. The ambience is kind of cool, very dark with large couches and a very chill vibe. It's not a big place and there are only 2 bartenders/servers. The food comes out fast. The Chloe burger was quite good. The calamari was also pretty decent, especially considering how cheap it was during happy hour. Wines were $7, and most dishes were $5. Update from Jan 5, 2008 I just had to add my two cents to UCLA G's review. When the bouncer said that he's trying to maintain the "atmosphere", it's not a race thing. In fact, I think the owner's wife is Asian. Big groups are usually on the louder and rowdier side and they're trying to go for the whole quiet, intimate, swank thing. So I'm sure if you went back with 5 or less people, you will get in no problem. It's always easy to chalk up everything to race. But that's not always the case... End of my two cents :) *************** Just opened last night. Nice hidden little spot with creative and STRONG cocktails. I had the old fashioned which looks like a girly drink b/c it's red and comes garnished with an orange slice, but dont let its appearance fool you. If you close your eyes, you'll think you're drinking straight whiskey! :d Lots of cocktails made with all different kinds of liquors and frenchy stuff (champagne, lillet blanc, etc) It's kinda pricey though which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Cocktails range $10-14 and $9 will get you a little bowl of friend calamari or a mini-burger with nothing on the side. Crostinis come with 2 pieces of bread topped with a spread for each order at $4. Food is good, but pricey. If everything (food, drinks) was $3 cheaper, i'd probably come here more often. I love this place for happy hour, which goes until 8pm -- already a plus! It's a great setting to catch up with a friend or small group... or for a semi-romantic after-work drinks date. It's small, dark and cozy with one negative being that the front door opening and closing brings a draft. You feel like you're in a Victorian library, and I picture a fireplace though I can't be 100% sure there is one. The bartenders are accommodating and eager to bring you a drink you'll really enjoy. As far as the happy hour food specials go, I order the French Fries with malt vinegar and sea salt. They are served with the vinegar on the side, but if you like that flavor combination it opens your eyes to a world without ketchup. I would recommend the Baked Mac & Cheese over the Grilled Cheese. The grilled cheese sounded fancy with "English cheddar," but it was nothing more than a basic homemade grilled cheese. The Bruschettas were just OK. This is for HAPPY HOUR only I usually hate anything near the promenade because its highly trafficked and packed with tourists (dont get me wrong theres nothing wrong with it, but I dont care for it too much) but I happened to go and stumble upon this little heavenly place :) It reminded me of an old smoking room, classic architecture and dark colors with white...possibly a grown and sexy feel to it but not pretentious ? The bartender/waiter was super helpful and friendly, there was tons of couches and large comfy chairs The happy hour menu was straight forward, fried calamari, fritzes, some other sh*t but low and behold grilled cheese sandwiches and mac n cheese :) the grilled cheeses were made to perfection and the mac n cheese had a smoky Gouda flavor. Loved them both, my boyfriend seemed to share my enthusiasm lol I am a huge fan of dirty martinis with extra olives and the bartender served me a few stiff ones :) what was even better is that they were only like $8.50 each at regular price. STEAL :) The beers were $4 I think and the wine was like $5 bucks...wells were about $7 I believe...its been a few weeks to I apologize if its not completely accurate but im pretty sure it is... Came here for a meet-up with friends. Great vibe. Really dark inside I have to say. You don't see much from outside, which really makes you feel special when you enter in. And as some of the reviews mentioned, this place looks a little fancy like the ones in downtown. But this one is more intimate, not huge space. Tuesday night is mellow, but still somewhat full. Only 2 bartenders serving, so don't expect the service to be prompt. I think I like the vibe more than everything else. I agree the drink is weak, which is not necessary a bad thing for me as I can easily get tipsy. I had a cocktail with empty stomach, didn't feel like drunk at all (But later feel stomach uncomfortable) Food wise, it's ok. Calamari is ok, $5 for this small portion is fine. I ordered the Buschetta with Burrata and Pistachio. But the bartender heard me say as Tomato with Basil. I don't know if it sounds the same, but he said when he repeated with 'Tomato and Basil'? I said yes. I think it was probably too noisy inside? If it wasn't because of the garlic inside was killing me, I would just eat them. But I knew it would kill me.(And indeed later when I went back home, I had to take medicine.) The good side is he agreed to just give me another order. Thank you. Came after the Copa D'oro one night since the Copa was too loud for our tastes. This was definitely a quieter scene but I could see it getting louder and a bit rowdier on a weekend night. We ordered a couple drinks a settled into the modern couches. My rum and coke was not terrible but it wasn't great. Some of the girls tried the fancier concoctions and seemed to enjoy them since they bough several. They do have a good size menu and the bartenders seem capable of making anything you'd want. There's a cool, hip ambiance as well. Although it's not outright fancy and upscale, you somehow feel that way (I think it's the modern decor). But that doesn't mean you need to dress up. Everyone is welcome. All in all it was a cool bar (in a hotel, I think) but I don't see myself coming back often. Its proximity to the 3rd Street Promenade just means traffic and parking difficulties to me which isn't something I like to combine with my drinking. If I'm already in the area with friends I would suggest we visit here. It's a good place to start off the night. read more

This is a quaint little place right off third street. A wonderful gem of a find, I will probably make this my choice bar in Santa Monica. It's right next to the hotel. It's rather dim inside and romantic, intimate feel. The bathrooms are small and there are some tables aside from the bar, but it's not very big. I'm sure it can get crowded very quickly. They have a great happy hour menu and I highly recommend the grilled cheese which we had multiple plates. :) The servers were plenty and very sweet and attentive. Trendy and chic, I met my buddy for a vodka tonic here on a calm Tuesday night. I don't know why the bartender continued to blast the music for the four customers and the waitress, but it didn't really bother me. Bar Chloe is a nice little place to grab a drink in Santa Monica. The only weird thing (and this is not the fault of the bar) is that parking outside is all meters and the meters from from 9AM to 2 AM. Dude. Who enforces meters at 1 AM? I love this place. The vibe is great, drinks and food are worth it. The manager needs to learn the word "please". I've been here before, and he's absolutely rude. He doesn't know how to work in the service industry if he becomes short with any customer that walks in the door. Last night, I arrived with a group and wanted to ask for someone to come around. I walked over to the bar, and before I could say a word said, "sit down. We'll be over there." He basically told me to sit like a puppy that hasn't listened to you the first 10 times despite knowing that he has to sit when told. When I got back to my group, I told one of my associates that he was a jerk, and she having been here several times immediately agreed. We're in the area once a month for an event that we hold. We are looking for another place to convene for drinks and a bite even though we really love everything else. The owner is really nice. I wish she had better help. read more

If I could design a little personal lounge space in my home, it would be decorated like Chloe. The dark wood, patterned wallpaper, and flamboyant furniture all contribute to a fun and sexy atmosphere (zebra print chaise lounge anyone?). Maybe a little too much fun, since every time I come here I wake up the next morning going, "Wait, what happened? How did I get home? My heeeaaad..." The bar serves an array of champagne cocktails, and while I've never eaten there, the happy hour small plates look and smell delicious. My only gripe is that the champagne cocktails are served in oddly shaped stemware that looks kinda cheap, instead of the traditional flutes. Well I guess that's not my only gripe... The drinks were fine, the ambiance was ok, but the service?!? Woah! It took a while to get out drinks and when we did get them the order was mixed up. Which is fine. No reason to get all upset. However, when it was time to close up, we were told that we needed to "Get out". Mind you we had just received our drinks. At this point the owner decided to grab our half full (I'm an optimist) drinks from in front of us. Including putting his finger inside one of the glasses?!?! Weirdest experience! We came in for happy hour at 7 on a Monday after work hoping for a relaxing atmosphere. Instead all 4 of us were sat at the smallest table next to the door. Next to us at a table big enough for 6 was a couple and their crying baby. Not relaxing. Cramped and loud and bizarre. Was honestly just shocked to see an infant sitting in an adult environment. The bartender sensed we weren't thrilled but didn't help much by telling us it is a "casual atmosphere". That doesn't really make the crying stop - just makes me want to visit any of the 20 other bars within walking distance. Two stars because of the price and quality of the drinks. I like the old-fashioned cocktail but the eponymous Bar Chloe drink sounded really awful with Malibu rum and peach schnapps. I guess if you were still in college, it might be good. Nice quiet lounge that has plenty of comfy seating perfect for a first date or just a place to get a drink and have a nice conversation without being distracted by the thumping bass of a club or the crowds of a douchebag bar. Has the feel of a luxe hotel bar and is walking distance to several other more typical bars and restaurants in the area. It's a great place to meet up with your group before the night begins or an even better place to bring back the one person from your group that you want some one on one time with after everyone is partied out. Not a very good beer selection however so plan on having a nice cocktail. read more

I like this place. I stopped by to check it out since I had been here when it was the Voda bar. If you like great martinis and a casual atmosphere for happy hour or an evening drink, this is your place. The place has a chill, lounge-like atmosphere and Blake our bartender was very cool, chatting with us while he was making our drinks. We were there on a Wednesday evening so it wasn't crowded at all. I liked Bar Chloe, in much the same way as the speakeasy I went to in NYC. I only wish that my goose & soda came in a tea cup, like in NYC. The vibe was really chill and relaxed. It was much better than being up the street at the Penthouse at the Huntley. If it were closer to the South Bay, I'd be here far too often! The drinks were a little spendy, but not as bad as the bars on Sunset in WeHo. It seemed like a dive bar, but without the divey-ness. Bar Chloe is just dimly it enough to be sexy and romantic, it's has an upscale very pretty laid back feel to it. This was my 3rd bar of the night haha, so it was a nice change of pace. You can kick back on one of their couches with a nice cocktail and actually hear what the people your with are saying. It reminds me of being back in NY, it has a vintage romance to it you don't find often in LA. The drinks were good.. not great but good, the best drink of the night was the lavander gimlet (which is Gin, Lime, Lavander Essence, and Sugar.) So why only 3 stars..?... well the bar smelled like bad or spoiled fish. I'm not sure what caused the smell, i'm hoping it's just a fluke. Hey it could have been one of the customers for all I know. I came here for a work sponsor happy hour expecting nothing more than free drinks and coworkers. Bar Chloe sure surprise me with their friendly servers and peaceful ambience. When I arrived I noticed that the venue was small yet quaint and intimate. I decided that my coworkers and I should try something different so we started the night with shots of pickle back (which is a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice). It's rare for a bar to have pickle juice so I was extremely excited to find out they could actually make this drink because they had pickle juice. Next we decided to try our hand at a specialty drink on their menu. I typically like a Long Island or an audio's but idly enough they didn't have the ingredients to make either- no Bueno :( We decided to get a different drink which turned out to be a margarita-sequel drink with Serano peppers. The drink was very flavorful and had an aftertaste with a Kik from the pepper. It's not a drink I would personally like to order with consistency but I can see myself getting it every blue moon. We followed up the drinks with food and we found that their happy hour menu for food was just as good as the drink menu. We ordered calamari bites, french fries, and a grilled cheese slices. The calamari slices where that are perfectly and were complement well with both tartar sauce and catch up. The french fries were pretty basic and nothing spectacular special to rant and rave about. The grilled cheese was also solid but nothing to rant and rave about. It wouldn't compare to the grilled cheese truck. After the food we chased it with rounds of tequila. Between the waiter and the manager who is there at the time we had an extremely enjoyable service experience and we were showered with customer service. I will gladly come back to our Chloe again for happy hour and I'm happy I was able to find this gem in Santa Monica. read more

Great Happy Hour! While they don't have a large selection of drinks (there's only three - 1 beer, 1 wine, and one cocktail - $5 each) and only about six appetizers on their Happy Hour menu, the quality of the food is surprising for a bar. We all loved their Mac 'N Cheese, which came with a crisp lightly breaded top. This def did not taste like anything from a box. Their fried artichoke pieces were also really good (slightly oily but the pieces were not soggy), as well as their grilled cheese sandwich, all for $5 each. Their Pimm's Cup was pretty good (lemon, ginger ale, and some English liquor called Pimms), and I was able to drink it without wincing. Seems like a chill place to relax but you probably have to get lucky to get a seat in this small bar late at night. Prices are average for the SM area during non-Happy Hours ($12+ for a drink, ~$10 for appetizers, etc). read more

I LOVE Bar Chloe...tucked away where you can easily miss it. Bar Chloe is a great little spot to hit up during the week when you need a drink or five. I've been here on a Thursday night. The vibe is chill, the drinks are delicious (peach bellini) and the decor is really cute. There wasn't really a "DJ" the night that I went, but a guy with his laptop played some good music so I was content. I can't stress the yummy bellinis enough and need to come back for the happy hour. The bartender was nice, drinks were strong, and I want to come back on a Friday or Saturday. Parking is easy enough, it's right next door in the structure. The lounge itself is on the smaller side but makes it intimate enough for a date or drinks with the girls. I think everyone should check it out at least once. read more

I came here with a group of friends before the disastrous event "Glow." As much as Glow sucked, Chloe wasn't bad at all. I gave it three stars because it has a really interesting decor inside. It's one of the most interesting/beautiful lounge/bar I've been to out here. The only complaint I had was that it was a little to crowded when we first got there... like so crowded I literally couldn't move, and I don't usually have a problem moving through crowds. After a large number of people left around the same time though, there was a little more breathing room and I was able to enjoy the nicely mixed G&Ts made by the friendly bartenders. A little pricey and wasn't a crazy exciting time, but I enjoyed it enough that I would recommend it to a friend, even if it was just to see the inside. It truly is beautiful... I'm not completely sure why it didn't get more than 3 stars in my book... maybe the interesting decor inside distracted me too much and lowered the quality of conversation and fun I was having with my friends because I couldn't stop looking at the bar and people around me. P.S. Dudes, don't show up in a t-shirt. I was wearing a polo and felt a little under dressed. Racist owner. We were a crew of twelve, with someone who is a regular. Had a birthday party and a table set up. We started going in and doing the id thing then as half the party is inside the owner sees the birthday boy, whispers something to the bouncer, and we all have to leave. He's Asian and three drinks in, but apparently that is too drunk for bar Chloe. The bouncer got very clear no instructions and changed his story a few times, but clearly the owner saw an Asian guy in our group and suddenly there was a problem which couldn't be solved. Tl;dr Chloe is racist and you shouldn't go there. At least you shouldn't if you respect your friends. This just happened and the 'drunk guy' has had less than me. The good: vibe, ambience, drink creativity and selection, mellow music, low lighting, comfortable seats, good appetizer type food. The bad: limited on tap beer menu; sort of a long wait for the food, can get really crowded, when they have a DJ set up the music is too loud for so small a space; drink prices are high; some mixed drinks should be avoided (the Vesper, for one), and it can take a while for the bartenders to make the more involved mixed drinks (e.g. old fashioned). The odd: you can smell freshly baked chocolate chip cookies from next door while you're sitting enjoying your cocktail. Then, you suddenly smell and want cookies. But you can't have cookies. How frustrating is that? Good spot for a night out with friends if you don't want to go crazy and get your dance on. Wouldn't recommend a big group beyond 3 or 4 people. read more

I went again the following night and it was crowded, loud and uneventful. I came here for drinks and appetizers before I went out dancing and I must say that I really love this bar! It was not, however, without flaws. The Good: -Decor - had a very romantic feel. Good date place on an uncrowded night - Drinks - They are known for good cocktails and I was not disappointed. I don't remember the name of my drink, but it had Gin and it was very tasty. My friend had the margarita infused with jalapeno and she said it gave it a nice kick. - Food - I enjoyed pretty much everything we ordered except for the burger, which was just OK. The Bad: - Lighting - I get it, it's a bar. However, you are a bar with food. I had to use my cell phone just to be able to read the menu - Seating - While it LOOKS good, it was a bit awkward having to eat while sitting on couches. Also, the tables are basically low coffee tables, which did not allow enough room for the food that was ordered. - Service - I had no issue with my server, but she was the only one working. Whenever I want an amazing drink I go to Bar Chloe! This is hands down my favorite bar! What makes this place a little gem is their bartender Kim! Kim always makes the most amazing drinks! And he always makes the drinks RIGHT! They are not only strong but they also taste great! What I appreciate about him is his creativity and great customer service. He's always experimenting and trying to come up with new drinks for the daily and seasonal specials. Even if it's busy he's nice enough to at least have the courtesy to acknowledge the customers. The bar itself is dark, small and classy. Just a nice place to chat it up and grab a good drink. If you're in the area, you have to stop by. Back in October he made this yummy pumpkin broiler which I seriously crave all the time. My most recent visit he made a cookie flip with peanut butter to appease my pumpkin broiler craving. Holy cow!
