Fantastic, cute B&B walking distance to the main strip of Southwest Harbor…read more My wife and I stayed here for our 15th wedding anniversary and so got the top-floor suite with private deck complete with hot tub as well as a kitchen/living area. The whole space was amazing, but the massive private deck with the view was really the best part. The deck was so big with so many seating spaces that even across two nights we didn't manage to use all of them. There were two day beds under a small roof which we pushed together and wound up falling asleep under the stars both nights and moving into the room later in the night. The hot tub was everything you'd expect. There was a table we ate dinner at one night and a lounging area we never got to use. The only downside was that the deck was super-wet from dew each morning. The day bed under the roof was dry enough for us to eat the breakfast they brought up to the room on while enjoying the view. We didn't use the communal heated pool or honor system bar, but they both looked nice if you were staying somewhere other than the top floor with the private deck. The location is great. Other than the view, it was a 7-minute walk to Beal's lobster pier for lobsters and lobster rolls and a 12-minute walk into town where we had our anniversary dinner at Harbor Table and there's other nice things in town as well. The included breakfast was also good and better when served in our room. The first morning it was blueberry spread on a baguette where the bottom half was French toast. It was different and delicious especially with bacon on the side. The room itself was spacious with a huge bathroom and a living and kitchen area that we badly used other than the decent sized fridge which was great to keep lobster rolls for the next day and beer for the evenings. The bedroom itself was a bit smaller than you'd imagine and only had a queen-sized bed just because of the layout of the top floor, which used to be an attic. Overall, the only downside is that they don't allow kids, so if we ever come back and come with them (which is likely), we'd need to find another place.

It was the most luxurious place I'd ever stayed! Tucked off the main street in Southwest Harbor, this is a quiet little spot with well maintained grounds and amazingly organized cabins. Top notch bed and pillows. It's about a twenty minute drive to Bar Harbor, but it's easy and quick once you get the feeling of the layout. The "office" has extra swimming towels, movies, and books about Acadia. It's really awesome how the owners, Tom and Vickie, care about their customers. A downside was barely seeing the owners! We went in during their office hours but didn't see them. We received an invoice, and I was sad to not chat within our 48 hours of staying there. The 10am check out also was pretty brutal. You also clean your own cabin, which is okay, but we made breakfast and tea- doing dishes while packing up and paying the expensive price before 10? That was not great. It's pricey here, but it's so luxurious and beautiful, it's worth the splurge.

We just stayed at Balance Rock Inn this weekend and what an incredible experience it was…read more Hotel: The hotel is a beautiful, old house with a bar, seating area, and restaurant on the bottom floor. Rooms are throughout the four levels of the house. Room: We stayed in 310, which faces the front/side of the hotel. There was a huge tree in fall colors when we opened the blinds. Bed and bedding was excellent. Bar/Restaurant: I can't say enough great things about the bar. Excellent cocktail and wine selection. Eating and drinking here felt like a private experience. Buffet style breakfast on the house every morning was incredibly good. I'm still thinking about it. Town: I'm sure there are a million other reviews of the town on Yelp, but we found it extremely warm and inviting. Several book stores, local artisans, etc made the top of my list. Maine big breakfast was the best breakfast during our stay. The town is an easy walk from the hotel, and you can get anywhere on foot easily. The Park: We could've spent days exploring. One of my favorite parks I've been to. We did the 'touristy' Jordan Pond trail- which was incredible and not a technical, but a long walk. Bottom line: We'll be back and we'd absolutely stay here again. Late October may not be everyone's cup of tea, but we enjoyed the small town Maine quiet.

A B&B that is timeless!…read more My husband and I were cruising the coast of Maine and were lucky enough to get the last available room at the Oceanside Meadows Inn. We heard about the Schoodic Peninsula on Chronicle and had to see it for ourselves. We didn't book anything before we left home because we decided to throw caution to the wind and let the knowledge of the Yelp community and the availability of Hotels Tonight be our guide. It worked well! First, the Oceanside Meadows Inn is an Old Sea Captain's house. It's not a "renovated" Sea Captain's house (which, I believe, would ruin the charm) so don't expect fancy schmancy designer curtains and hot tubs. It is exactly the way it should be. There is mismatched furniture and trinkets and a telescope and a piano and board games and lots of floral bedding and chopped wood and, and, and...I could go on. Second, if you're an old soul at heart, you will come to understand the Peninsula and know that Oceanside Meadows is a perfect representation of what the area is all about. It's raw and charming and historic and no, please don't ever replace those old creaky windows and that beautiful glass. The beds are comfortable and we could hear the lapping of the ocean outside our window (I slept through the night which is something I never do) and although others have mentioned small bathrooms, our bathroom had a shower and although it wasn't a huge bathroom, it was fine. We actually did not have time to go over to the beach area across the street (the weather wasn't great either) but the view is stunning and you will most likely have the beach to yourselves when you stay there. I'll be honest about breakfast. I didn't really eat much of it. I can't eat chilled fruit soup in the morning (my husband liked it) and they incorporate nature into the menu (think edible flowers) so it's interesting but I'm kind of immature when it comes to eating stuff like that so I can't really write a review about it. I still loved having tea from the vintage teacup and I did eat a whole grain waffle, which was good. I'm not one to "request" something else (breakfast isn't a biggy for me anyway) but they were very accommodating so I'm sure I could have asked for something else. We were in kind of a hurry so when Ben told the guests to meet him in the cottage to discuss things to do in the area we were going to try and sneak out beforehand but I'm so glad we got caught because it was the BEST. The history and knowledge he has of the area is unbeatable. We had the best lobster roll for lunch because of him and we saw some beautiful areas because of his suggestions that we otherwise would have never seen. Oceanside was really a perfect spot to stop and absorb the Peninsula and appreciate its history. One more thing. The owners left a book on the bed for us when we arrived. It was called The Peninsula (by Louise Dickinson Rich) and it's all about...wait for it...the Schoodic Peninsula. It's an oldie but my husband found it in a used bookstore a few days later and I am now the proud owner of it. If you love the area, I highly recommend that you read it. It's the little things in life that make all the difference.

The key to this place is seclusion. And Breakfast!…read more If you are looking for a B&B off the beaten path, but still nestled in beautiful coastal wilderness, then this is your spot. Maybe you're not a B&B person (I wasn't); you'll still enjoy the breakfast. Like the previous reviewer said, the entire peninsula is a quiet, early-to-bed sort of place without much in the way of dining or nightlife. However, you are a five minute drive from your own secret national park - Acadia National Park's Schoodic Peninsula. Without the hype and crowds of the bigger park an hour car (or ferry) ride away, but with just as many rocky shorelines, and a few rooty trails, this little park is a hidden gem. The people staying at the B&B seemed to be more the hiking, biking, canoeing type than city slickers looking for a cute town to shop in (see: Bar Harbor instead). The sleepy town aside, the grounds of the B&B are beautiful, 2 or 3 big houses with some old shuttered cottages, a greenhouse and foresty trails in back, a private strip of beach across a tiny street. I didn't find the decor all that odd - I expected a B&B to look like a crazy grandmother's house with floral wall paper and quilts and doilies - and that's what you get. Multiple common living rooms, a kitchen for cooking (since there are no vegan-friendly restaurants within an hour radius), all in the same building as our room. You have to be a little comfortable dealing with other guests, and I imagine you could have a bad night if they were a little rowdy since none of the rooms are sound-proof at all. Our room had a nice and comfy king bed, private bath/shower, no A/C but the temperature was perfect in the night in August with the windows open. I can't comment on how it would feel in other seasons, but they did have heaters lining the walls for cooler months. No TV, wifi seemed to work for us but was a little slow. Cell phone reception was spotty for the entire peninsula. The best part of the stay - the three course breakfast every morning. I believe it's always vegetarian, and can be made vegan (the chef is very accomodating), in our two days we had various fruit soups, french toast, bundt cakes, and an egg (substitute) florentine, along with fruit drinks and coffee/tea. I really enjoyed the creativity of presentation, the edible flowers, and it was so good that you have to eat it all and then go outside and expend enough energy in the great outdoors to work it off. Even though I'm fairly certain I'm not a B&B person (not the biggest fan of chatting with strangers) I definitely would recommend it if you happen to be in the area or want to escape the crowds of Bar Harbor.

And it's got location, location, location! It sits right on the Bar Harbor's "shorepath" that runs the length of Bar Harbor's coast along Frenchman's Bay and has very easy access to downtown Ba' Ha'ba' (as the locals say) by walking. It's also semi-secluded so you would NEVER know you were a hop, skip and a jump from all the festivities (day or night). It's the best of both worlds. If you aren't up for Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, or the rest of Mt. Desert Island's charms, then you can relax at the B&B. There is a net for badminton, a croquet set, a piano, boardgames, and (my favorite!) tons and tons of books (bibliophile that I am!) . Roberta, the innkeeper and owner, raised her five children in this six bedroom house during the 70s and early 80s, they've since all grown up and left, but she remained with her lawyer husband and then eventually opened the place up as a bed and breakfast. She's also travelled far and wide and has collected many things through out the house. (Most interesting to me is the stuff she's brought back from Israel.) She's a good cook and serves breakfast sit-down style at 7 or 8 am with coffee service beforehand if you want it. (I loved this particular aspect as most B&Bs don't do this and it gives me a opportunity to check out what other people have planned for the day.) I loved the homemade cereal and the eggs were complimented all around. She also serves an aperitif in the afternoon with wine and hor d'oeurves. Heaven! The B&B is seasonal (summer and fall) as Roberta stays with one of her kids in Israel for the winter. And the prices are reasonable (for Bar Harbor) for this piece of Elysium (we paid $270/night for the three bedroom suite in the attic-talk about awesome water views). An all around good deal! It's so good, I'm planning to go back this summer.

We have had a great week at Shorepath Cottage. What a location! Its back porch has a nice view…read moredown a long lawn to the water, with boats occasionally going past, and it's just a few blocks from the heart of Bar Harbor. "Cottage" is a misnomer, by the way. This is a large, well kept older home, clean, light and bright inside, with white walls, diamond-paned windows in the topmost hall, generous front and side porches, and a lawn that runs down past sunflowers and a vegetable garden to the shore path along the water. This is innkeeper Roberta's last summer; she told us her daughter will be taking over. We had good experiences with both during our stay. Roberta made the price of two rooms affordable for our family. Lisabeth helped provide everything we needed. And that was a lot! We borrowed tumblers, a wine glass, first aid tape and bandages. Our family was happy with the breakfasts. Delicious homemade muesli, fruit salad, and blueberry pound cake were available every day. The innkeepers also made a soufflé one day, blueberry pancakes another, and so on. They offered to make eggs as well, but we were fine with what was already out. Tea and coffee were available at all hours. By the way, I have a bit of a dust allergy. Despite the runners and rugs here and there, my allergy did not act up. This means the carpets must be kept well vacuumed or beaten, and the upholstery as well. This was a fabulous difference from most B&Bs. If we come back to Bar Harbor, this is where we'll stay. Five stars. By the way, good things to do with tweens include: - Reel Pizza. Movie house with sofas and tables where you can order pizza, soda and beer to have while you watch current movies. - Visitors Center right next to the village green. Maps; get your bearings. - Acadia bike shop. Rent bikes. Take them over to the village green and take the BikeExpress bus. They'll load your bikes onto trailer that's attached to the bus. This bus takes you to Eagle Lake where you can bike the carriage trails. Great loop around that lake; scenic and a good ride. Bus goes every half hour or so; pickup from same spot takes you back to town. - Drive to Otter Cliff (first bus stop after Sand Beach). Park in lot. Cross the street towards water. Walk along the path. It keeps going for ages - lovely seaside walk above the cliffs.
