I wish I could give Bar Keeper 7 stars!! It was my first time in there and I, reluctantly, drove about 45 minutes to get there. Man, am I happy I did?! I went there looking for some bitters to experiment with (as I had read that Bar Keeper is the Mecca of bitters in all of LA) and I was very intimidated by the selection. But after a minute or two of looking for myself, I was greeted and helped by a gentleman who was so patient, helpful and eager to educate me and have me sample a bunch of bitters, that I was just blown away. Between their selection and Joe's (Joe Keeper...the owner) kindness and enthusiasm in helping me out, I left there with some fantastic products, but more importantly, with a ton of new education in this new world of bitters which I knew so little about. I found some really nice & unique barware there that I had to have and Joe was even kind enough to refer me to a couple of other shops where I could find some of the other items I had been searching all over the city for. They had just been wiped out of 1 of the bitters I was interested in buying and this time around, I actually don't mind at all driving 45 minutes to get there, after my first experience...! read more

I've been poking my head into here for years, laughing at the witty napkins, intimidated by the wall of bitters, and gazing adoringly at the beautiful stemware, but never seriously purchasing anything. Now, I'm slowly building up my bar at home, and I couldn't for the life of me find grapefruit bitters for a cocktail I wanted to try. Bar Keeper to the rescue! Not only did they have grapefruit bitters, they had at least 5 different ones for me to taste and compare. I had a lot of fun trying the different bitters and finding one I liked the best. I was left to my own devices, and while it can be overwhelming to navigate for the first time, I liked that no one was influencing my choice or trying to make a sale. I picked up a small bottle of Sun Liquor's Grapefruit Bitters, and I love it so much! It was perfect for my cocktail, and a bottle is going to last me forever. The guy at the register was very friendly and confirmed that I had chosen well. I have a feeling that if I had actually needed help, he would've been more than happy to assist me. read more

Yet another place that I really would love to love, but can't. They have beautiful glassware, spunky gifts, and of course many a fancy liquor. What they don't have is good service and when you're paying double to support local, service really counts. I came by here to buy a fancy gift box for my boss from our office. When I got there, the owner told me that they only did gift boxes if you called a day in advance. Well okay that sucks, but whatever. We'll just buy what was in the box and have it wrapped up nicely right? Not really. The owner begrudgingly sold me some of the items separately. He said something about how I was undercutting him by buying the items that way. Okay... well you won't sell me the gift box and now you're saying that me spending $40+ more to buy them separately is some how undercutting you? Right. Fine. Don't take my money. If I hadn't been buying for the office I would have walked out. Our company dropped $150 on fancy liquors for our boss and the owner wouldn't even print out a drink recipe. Not to mention that the ordering policy isn't even listed on the website. The customer service was so bad I could really use a real drink. UPDATE Someone from the shop just sent me a Yelp Message telling me to not come back... I wasn't planning on it, but it gave me reason to pause and think about why this store deserves the rating I gave it. To be fair, as I was leaving they tried to be friendly, but it was too little too late. They did wrap the bottles and gave me extra tissue when I asked. So maybe I should have given them two stars. Now that instead of acknowledging my issues with customer service.. they've decided to tell me not to return... it's pretty clear they deserve the single star. The entire time I was in the shop it was as though I was being reprimanded for not calling ahead. In a perfect world everyone would know the policy and call ahead, but in reality people (and especially offices) do things last minute. In reality, customers who leave unhappy will leave you with unhappy Yelp reviews. read more

My name is Javier J. and I have a problem. (Hello Javier) Yes, my problem is not that I like drinking, it's that I'm addicted to buying neat little bar tools and gear and coming to Bar Keeper is like getting a quick hit on a drug. Yes, this place is so totally addicting. I just can't help but come here, even when I don't have any social gatherings to throw, I just love looking at the vast amount of cool looking equipment here to potentially throw a cocktail party. The coasters, the shakers, the ice cube trays.. I love it all. This all comes across as vintage cool bar accessories that could be lifted off of a scene from Mad Men. Just thinking of this place makes me want to enjoy an Old Fashion. Bar Keep is one of those places that you just want to buy everything in here and become a socially acceptably cool looking drunk. I mean, who would ever say you have a problem when you're pouring them a mixed drink from you neat-o space aged bar equipment? And if they do you can easily shut them up by making them another drink. The glassware also is just delightful. Yes, that's right. I said delightful. It makes me feel like I'm trapped in the time period that the items sold here just feel they belong. I'm willing to bet that even if you hate the taste of booze, you'll still love all the things in this store and find ways to spend a lot of your money here. read more

Bar Keeper is a great idea: a small, local outpost for those who make a hobby or even an art-form of The Drink. In some ways, the idea is the reality: there are more flavors of bitters and other additives like Orange Flower Water than you'd ever hope to find. There's also a great selection of top-notch old gins and bourbons, and a totally passable obscure scotch selection. That said, these people are total assholes. I'm as elitist and high-brow about my food and drink as the next Silver Lake Yuppie, but I don't shirk common courtesies and general friendliness to my fellow man - particularly when I would hope to unite in our common interests and enthusiasm for the product for which, by the way, I'm about to shell over 50% more cash than I would on Amazon for the same thing. I tried everything I could to get the clerk to be friendly but he would not drop his scowl and curt, condescending replies. At the end of my purchase, I said "have a nice day!" to no reply. Bravo for opening a local, neighborly enthusiast store. Shame on you for not having a local, neighborly demeanor. Three stars is a stretch. read more

You pick up the vial and drop a few aromatic bitters into a small paper cup and sample away. The flavors are so intense that you probably won't want to sample more than a few. They have authentic, vintage, Mad Men era glassware for sale, so you can sip your cocktail in style. There are also beautifully crafted modern bar tools that are so unique that just owning them will instantaneously make you a better bartender in the eyes of your friends. read more

How on Earth have I missed this place all these years?!?! Wow, talk about an alkee's version of bar supply heaven! They have the most unique and adorable tools for the drinking trade here including glasses, seltzer bottles, shakers, straws and the best part of all: the bitters collection. I was sniffing it up in bitter glory and ended up taking home a deelish grapefruit bitters and even a rhubarb bitters! Who knew that last one even existed! The guy who owns the place is a real peach too and is very knowledgeable about his products and after talking to him for a spell, it sounds like he is always looking to bring in new and exciting products to add to your cocktails to make them sing! Definitely recommend strolling on in here if you are shopping along this strip in Silverlake. Good stuff! read more

My brother in law and I peeked in when I was in town, what this place did was peaked my interest in wishing this place had a sister location back home. Imagine, wall to wall various glasses, bottles of bitters, vintage and new items all scattered about with a great collection of other cool bar items through out the store. My brother in law found some bitters that he had a really tough time finding on his own. Apparently they only are found from one company in Canada and even the owner can get a certain amount at a time. I picked up some new wine glasses that I love using at home. Straight from Austria, these babies are spliced with titanium instead of silicon to improve the hardness and make them extremely hard to break. Good for my butter fingers. The owner had a crate load of them with all of the boxes completely smashed, all except one survived, attesting to their sturdiness. This place isn't just about the great selection of unique and hard to find glasses and other bar related knick knacks, its also about the owner. He seems to have about a thousand stories and then some about the city, people around town and every item in the store. Energetic, friendly and helpful and always willing to point you in a direction you may not have even thought of, he is the true jewel of the shop. I am loving my glasses and use them every chance I get, (sadly my liver does not share my excitement along with me). If you need something unusual or some thing unique for your libation time, stop on in, it will be worth your while. read more

Right idea, but wrong place and wrong price. The cute shop sucked me in off the street, but I walked out with the same amount of packages as I walked in. The bitters bar where dozens of bitters can be sampled seems like a great and fun thing. It is certainly a unique part of this business, but who can handle tasting straight bitters? Bitters are meant for a couple dashes for an entire cocktail. It would be like taste testing coffee by placing a pinch of ground beans in your mouth. Because this is a small shop, I wouldn't expect a bargain, but some prices on the booze were 30% to 40% higher than what I've paid at well established wine and liquor stores (but not Bevmo) around LA. If the selection is rare (like buying library cabs from a Napa Valley wine tasting room), then the price can be justified, but nothing in Bar Keeper's selection was so unique that I couldn't find at other stores. If you buy food at Williams-Sonoma or Dean & Deluca, then maybe shopping here makes budgetary sense. And like those places, the concept for this store is ideal for upscale malls (although the hard alcohol sales might pose a problem in a family oriented mall) and tourist trap locations. But I like a bigger bang for my buck so Bar Keeper just doesn't work for me. read more

I stood at the cash register, money in hand, waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting for either one of the two men behind the counter to simply acknowledge my presence with a look, or a smile or a standard "We'll be right with you." Eventually, I walked out the door without buying the bitters I came for. Not because they didn't ring me up fast enough, but because their willful failure to recognize my presence was just plain rude. Yet, curiously enough, one of them somehow managed to pipe in with a contemptuous "I'm sorry we didn't accommodate you quickly enough" as I left. After reading their Yelp comments, I'm confident that the people who own the place would prefer that I don't return to their shop in the future. With that in mind, I'm glad to say I won't be back again. read more

A gem of a resource for those of us with a penchant for all things cocktail, Bar Keeper bills itself as "a head shop for those who want to prepare and serve their cocktails with style." Bar Keeper has a terrific selection of new and vintage glassware, my favorite of which were a quartet of leather-chaps-wearing tumblers featuring famous cattle brand insignias. The shelves are lined with shakers and seltzer bottles, counters feature several sizes of metal stirrer/straws and a plethora of bar accoutrements, and the store, in general, is a great gift spot for that certain mixologist in your life who you might think has everything, but probably could spend an hour in here sampling the bitters alone, before spending half his paycheck on bar tools, obscure mixers, and some giant glass absinthe dispenser he'll probably use twice in his lifetime, but that is cool as hell. If you're just browsing and Someone Has A Birthday, the books offer something for both the novice and seasoned 'tender, and the card selection is worth browsing. After ogling the barwares for about half an hour, we finally just picked out a card that read "I HATE FUCKING BIRTHDAYS" for our brother-in-law. This place gets busy on the weekends, so I would suggest visiting during the weekdays. read more

I've been coming here for about a year now and I will say that it is not only the best bar supply store I have ever been to, but it has got to be one of the greatest shops in LA. This is a very cool funky little store focused on (obviously) alcohol and bar-related items. They sell a lot of unusual upscale liquors along with the most diverse selection of bitters I have ever seen, as well as bar accessories such as glasses, bottle openers, and the like. Bar Keeper is a keeper for two main reasons. The first is the novelty of the place. You can find all kinds of cool alcohols and accessories here that you wouldn't normally be able to easily find elsewhere. Secondly, the owner of this store is awesome. This is a seriously no pressure store where the owner is happy just to talk to you about liquors or answer your questions with absolutely no expectation for you to buy anything. He also knows his stuff, and was able to give me a detailed suggestion on a bourbon I was buying for my dad. Great store, highly recommended. read more

Man, this place is dangerous. I could be lost for hours sniffing the bitters, trying to decide what glasses I wanted to buy or chatting with the staff. Joe, the owner, is sweet, charming and loves his bar tools. If you've been looking for something special, be sure to ask him about it. He just may be able to find it for you. While the vintage sets are a little pricey, they are all in mint condition and gorgeously preserved. And there is always a modern gadget or shaker in your price range. Love this place. Stopped by here during Sunset Junction music festival lsat night. Anything you need to build out your own bar, you can find it here. They carry interesting cocktail napkins, ice cube trays, stirrers, shakers, absinthe fountains, ash trays, retro bartender guides plus many more. They have a little backyard area too as well with kitschy decor. If the owner feels like it, she may invite you to the back for a cold brew. The owner knows a ton about the history of the area and is a strong advocate of the neighborhood. She is very friendly and enjoys talk to the customers if she isn't too busy. In my opinion, definitely a must-stop if you are in the neighborhood. read more

If you have any interest in setting up a home bar, or just hosting the occasional cocktail party, this place should be on the list of shops to visit. It carries a wide selection of glasses, pourers, mixers and general bar paraphernalia. While I didn't actually buy anything (I'd love to have my own bar but it's just too much money to set up) it seemed like everything was good quality and reasonably priced. I'm sure it's more expensive than the mega marts or CVS, but it is a local business and that should be expected. Plus, I'd like to think it's better quality since it's a specialty store. Apparently this place has been around for 7 years.... Yes, 7. And I've only recently discovered it in the last few months. Now, I don't live down here so don't be too quick to judge me indie-hipster-silverlake-know-it-all-intel-koolaid-drinking-schmarm-o-ramas! I live in the Jungle. (Oh you don't know what that is? Whoops) A quick 20 minute jaunt from here. Most of my friends live in Los Feliz or Silver Lake, so I'm down here often. This place (as I've said in many reviews before) is seriously a gem. Their barware selection is literally one that I've never seen rivaled, yet alone matched by even a fraction. They have an absolutely enormous selection of bitters, seriously, so many it's amazing. And their spirits selection aint no slouch either. Amazing bourbons, scotches, gin and liquors from far and wide abound. Beautiful hand crafted shelving lines most of the Bar Keeper walls which are amply stocked with pretty much everything a novice or expert alike would need to host a killer cocktail party. They also have a bunch of great vintage glassware sets fr sale if you're into that sort of thing. I really cannot say enough good things about this place. Yes, they may be on the more semi=priced side, but I will gladly support this incredible little shop for the small markup that keeps them in business year after year, striving on through these hard times. Though my ONLY negative is their hours. Closing at 6 is just too early. I work in Beverly Hills so getting here before closing after a long day is neigh impossible sadly. A semi but barely negligible negative is price. I once got a bar tender's discount here (when buying a lot of stuff) which really made the cost just right. Would buy here 100% of the time (no joke Joe!) if this was always in effect for me. I do a lot of home/party bar tending and always need supplies/looking to amass the perfect collection. Best attributes are the extensive stock of bitters, bar tools and also the Neve Ice. I came to get the ice like I had seen in so many downtown bars but didn't want to settle for cloudy ice made in the make at home molds. Picked up some good bourbon, prices aren't nearly competitive as BevMo, but that is probably more for the convenience to the neighborhood. Excellent friendly staff, very helpful and would definitely visit again soon. read more
