I just walked into Bar Keeper today on my way to work and was blown away. This place really is any home bartender's dream. They have high quality bar tending equipment, glassware, a huge selection of bitters, and all kinds of assorted goodies. Very friendly staff. This is a great location to get bar supplies. But what I really love is the bitters tasting bar! They have about 20 or so different types of bitters, and they let you sample them all. Came here for some tonic water. Not just any tonic water but boutique concentrated tonic. What an impressive selection of gear, mixers, bitters, and spirits. Almost anything for the budding mixologist. I was impressed by the selection of spirits - items i would have taken time to hunt down were siting on the shelf. At the risk of sounding like a full fledged alcoholic, Bar Keeper is a weekly stop made while running errands on the weekend. The wall of fine liquors will have mixologists drooling, as well as all the other accoutrements imaginable to get your mix on. I am always pulled into the glassware area of the store. Often times I stumble upon a set of vintage glasses or stemware that I want for my collection. On this visit I saw a set of vintage apollo 11 glasses that my Mom use to have. The glassware can be a bit pricey, but then again I believe that you get what you pay for, and modern made products just don't seem to hold up as well these days. The bitter bar is massive, the most wide array of bitters I have ever seen in one place. Black walnut bitters on through your basic angustura, for all your old fashioned needs. On this specific trip I was in search of quite a few things for an upcoming party I am hosting. I needed a muddler for mojitos and caparinas, a few bottles of bitters for exploration of different flavored old fashions, and a jar of these amazing cherries I was fortunate enough to try the last visit I made to BK. The cherries are amazing and go perfect with the Templeton rye I also purchased. The grand total for all these wonderful goodies, $117, that is a bottle of Rye, two bottles of bitters, the amazing bourbon soaked cherries, and the muddler. Quite the deal actually, saves me time and money driving around town trying to piece together these items or ordering off the internet and being forced to keep a hawk eye on the mailbox for days or weeks. The selection of Whiskeys, Bourbons, and Rye's is definitive of the cocktail culture that has taken over the local bars, custom cocktails with interestingly different palettes and finishes that laugh in the face of the classic cocktails. The days of the classic green olive martini are gone, in it's place we find the habanero or pepperoncini martini. The classic cosmo has been replaced with super fruit variations that appeal to the health conscience. Bar keeper is geared toward this set of people. I am going to say this once again, BK may just be a bit pricier than other liquor stores but once you step foot inside you'll totally understand why. This is a shop for the craftspeople, for the sophisticated, the bold, and the daring. If you have any interest in cocktails, you have to drop in. When I lived in LA, and found myself in this area, I would often stop in to look at all of the bar-tending doodads. This place not only has books on the art but also just about anything you need for your own bar. When I moved to SF, I started actually getting into mixing cocktails myself. So, obviously when visiting LA, I had to stop in to the Bar Keeper again and pick something up for my new hobby (backup plan). This experience was even better than the others because all of these doodads were finally familiar. I explained that I was new to the art to the guy behind the counter and he graciously gave me 20 minutes worth of advice. I left the Bar Keeper with a muddler, a classic book of cocktail recipes, and a bottle of orange bitters. All of his advice also let to some praise at my last mixing party. I am sure I spent a little more than I had to for the same items but the advice and carefully edited selection of this shop justifies the prices. read more

So I see a lot of people complaining about service here, but maybe they need to do a bit of self reflection on their own attitudes, because I LOVE the service at Bar Keeper! Went in yesterday at around 5 looking for a gift for my boyfriend and started chatting with one of the employees. He ended up helping me pick out a good rye and I sampled a good amount of their huge variety of bitters (they have the semi exclusive local producer Miracle Mile Bitters Co.!). Seriously, the service was so great that I ended up staying for over an hour! They have great vintage barware that is constantly changing as the owner of the shop goes on frequent trips to find great collections. This is a bartenders paradise. I did not know there was a shop like this in LA until I had to pick up a few things for a bartending gig I picked up. Not only do they have quality merchandise, they have options for different tools you might need. The prices were definitely good, and the customer service was excellent. I was so impressed with the help I received. I am new to bartending, so he not only helped me find what I needed, he showed me a few tricks to use what I was buying, properly. One of my favorite places to take visitors on the east side. I love this joint. The owner, Joe Keeper, has the best stories of how the place came to be, and an incredible amount of knowledge in the world of mixology. They have a great selection of quality and hard to find liquors and spirits all long a wall that feels like it's taken out of the candy shop in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, sliding ladder and all. I have been here many times before, I love to support small businesses and try to do all of my Christmas shopping this way. Bar Keeper will never get another dime from me again. After reading the other negative reviews I know exactly who everyone is talking about. The guy who didn't help me at all was so rude to me when I paid. I asked if he had a gift box or anything and he quickly replied "NO"...He clearly had tons of gift wrap bags and tissue right behind him but I guess I wasn't good enough. After my transaction went through he gave me my bag without even glancing up from his computer and of course not even a thank you or goodbye. Save yourself the trouble and stay far away from this place. This guy doesn't deserve your business. read more

I just left that place after being extremely rudely talked to by the shop attendant. My mother and father were waiting patiently to order some wine glasses. The attendant completely ignored them for ten minutes as the attendant flirted with the other two customers. I was in another store on the street and upon my return there was no change. We are not impatient people. I told the attendant that we'd like to order some wine glasses. He looked at me and snapped "well you'll just have to wait your turn!" as the other customers giggled. great place if you love the booze (which i do) and you like discovering new and interesting things to do with them and serve them in (which i do). tons of interesting unique glassware...they have these finger food rings which are a little plastic plate that you wear like a ring on your finger so you can eat AND hold your drink! brilliant. if i had noticed them on the way in instead of the way out, i would have bought em, but next time. i really just needed some simple martini making supplies, and i found exactly what i wanted at a reasonable price. can't wait to make some martin miller martinis YUM! only thing that was weird was that a guy (the owner i think) got in a little tiff with the saleslady behind the counter as they were packing my stuff up...awkward. but really not that big of a deal. once i get up the courage to try absinthe again (my halloween experience involved chasing with snapple, tripping, and lots of vomit), this is where i'll come to learn how to drink it properly and get the best tools. read more

I walked out with an ice cube tray that pops out gem shaped wonders, because it's going to be a long, long time before I own any real jewels. They have a big selection of slotted spoons for Absinthe pouring and special sugar cubes in adorable packaging to complete the slightly pretentious process of making the drink drinkable. There's also a nice selection of liquor decanters with vintage metal labels now. Still hit and miss but the guy working today was hilarious enough to merit an update. There are all sorts of doodaddles and dingy's that you can pick up and add as conversation pieces to your place, most interesting is the glassware.
