We stood at the hostess stand for 15 minutes while the hostess gave the only other table a VERY detailed explanation of the menu and we could hear the whole thing. A server came over and apologized midway through, but did not seat us. When we were finally seated we got to listen to the same spiel again. It did nothing to enhance the experience and the wait felt awkward. While everyone else working seemed kind, our server was kind of snotty. I asked him for one particular condiment to be left off a dish and instead of going back and asking the chef if that was possible, he just said "no" and recommended I eat around it. The restaurant is beautiful. The food was beautifully plated, but it just wasn't particularly delicious and the service was awkward at best. Everything was just ok. My husband and I agreed that the best thing we had at the meal was the brioche they source from another bakery. I love eastern European and Balkan food typically. We stopped at Domek to celebrate our anniversary after reading in the paper that they offer vegan options! I reserved ahead and noted in the comments that we were vegan so they knew ahead of time. When we arrived not only were they extremely welcoming and excited to host us, but they had prepared a menu that noted which items we could order and any others that could be modified. It was honestly so thoughtful and above and beyond the service that we've had at most restaurants. I was very impressed that they took the time to do that! While there weren't any vegan mains available that night, we ordered a bunch of entrees (appetizers) and shared those. Everything we tasted was exquisite, and you could tell the thoughtfulness and care that was put into each dish. While I would have loved to see a vegan main available (they do update the menu regularly depending on market produce), we didn't feel like we were missing out. On top of the fantastic host and delicious food, our server was friendly, attentive and happy to provide recommendations. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone! This restaurant was so welcoming and inviting. The owner Sarah welcomed us. Her husband Andrew is the chef who is so creative and each dish felt it was prepared with love at home. I felt like Our server Gia was cheerful and knowledgeable. The cocktails prepared by Mason were so well balanced. Now on to the food. It was out of this world! The braised Cabbage was amazing and I don't usually like cabbage. The Oysters Gabor were made with love and creativity. The Salmon Pave was we one of the best pieces of salmon I've ever had seasoned to perfection. The Hungarian dumplings that were like little tortellini's were so creative and mouthwatering. Then came dessert, a Hungarian layer cake that was like nothing I'd ever had before. Well done!!!! read more

My partner and I decided to have dinner at Domek during our over-nighter in Eugene. We arrived around 18:00 without a reservation, but Sarah (co-owner and maître d') gave us spots at the bar and introduced the restaurant and Chef Andrew's (co-owner and hubby) menu to us. The farmer's cheese and pickled veggies appetiser was a delicious and creamy start to our dining experience. We had drinks and also shared the beef pierogi...YUM! Have gone twice and thought food was good in the first 6 months. Today, came in for a 7pm reservation on a Saturday, for both my and my parents' anniversary, with the restaurant less than half full. Stood at the host table for 5 min with my almost 80 yr old parents, being completely ignored. Got the bartenders attention and he said "Anna should be with you in a minute" Waited another 5 min with wait staff walking by us and ignoring us- said "excuse me" to a waiter and he had a major attitude with us. My father said "these people are assholes" and we all left. The food isn't good enough to put up with that kind of nonsense. Went to Bar Purlieu and had a great dinner, experience and service. Small little place. Service was decent. Didn't have a reservation but was seated relatively quickly despite it being busy. A guy sitting at the bar was being overly animated while screaming at his date about how good his drink(s) were. Shrimp toast was excellent. Had something else with a pea purée kinda thing and that was also excellent. Main dish was a piece of sausage cut fancy with some fondant potatoes and peppers. Didn't wow me. This new bistro is sure to surprise you with stunningly delicious Eastern European food, kind and classic service, and a gorgeous indoor space. After our experience, we will be back! Definitely for date nights and celebrations, Domek was where my husband and I decided to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary dinner. We ordered two begin plates, two entrées, a main, and dessert, with a few drinks in between. Food: 1) The two must-haves: Croquettes and Lángos! The balance of flavors and textures on these two dishes were surprising, delightful, and intense. These were my personal favorites of the entire night. Seriously, order this. 2) Fresh and delicious: Spring pea tartine and shrimp toast. The tartine was a pea and mint celebration, and was almost like a large salad with the crunchy fresh peas on top. The shrimp toast paired very buttery brioche against bright small shrimp, and balanced together nicely. 3) Main: Chicken paprikas. We were recommended this as their most popular dish twice, so we went for it - very yummy, the chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy, and fresh with crispy seasoned skin - a feat! All in all a well-executed chicken dish. I think next time we'll try a different main, for our tastes! 4) Dessert: Forgetting the name, it was a stacked dessert with sheets of puff pastry, a vanilla-bay pastry crème, walnut sauce, and a bay syrup. SO GOOD! My husband paired this with a sip of Royal Tokaji and he was in absolute heaven. Wine: We wished there were just a few more options on the by-the-glass menu! But my husband settled on a glass he enjoyed after trying out a splash of two of the others on the white wine list. However, our server handled all our preferences well and we had no complaints. We hope to see more Eastern European options to add to the theme! We are very glad they are adding Tokaji. Service: Incredibly kind, outgoing, and warm service. We were very much happy with the way this bistro was being handled. It felt hospitable and classy. I think this is a major selling point for Domek, and they should keep it up, given how important this aspect is for keeping customers coming back to any establishment. read more

From the moment we entered this Eastern European fine restaurant we had a great time. The hostess and wait staff were so welcoming we felt right at home from the start. There were three in our party and we tried just about everything on the intriguing menu. Hard to decide what our favorites were, all were marvelous. Pirogies and dumplings were the best ever. The chef certainly knows how to take things up a notch. Desserts were also award winning special attractions. The atmosphere is bright and very attractively comfortable, much better than the darker layout of former residents at the intimate building. This is a true gem. Eugene has many restaurants with minimal waitstaff, no host, QR code ordering so it was a breath of fresh air to come to Domek and be greeted by a host, have water served immediately and then be greeted by a waiter with an in-depth knowledge of the menu that checked on us frequently. I loved the service. It made the prices, which are expensive more tolerable. Every bite of food was delicious. Every bit of food I saw the tables around me eating looked delicious. Sometimes I go to a restaurant and want to taste everything in the menu, this is one of those places. I am looking forward to returning. It was easy to get a reservation for 5 PM on the weekend, when we left the place was packed. My favorite bite of the night was the shrimp toast. This is a do not miss dish. Quite the hotspot in Eugene, which I haven't spent much time in, but glad I grabbed dinner at this Eastern European bistro. When they say bites, they mean bites, but exquisite presentation. So hard to choose, but we had the shrimp toast, which seems to be a mainstay. The pastries are the real standout. Just a plate of rye bread with green butter (already forgot which herb) was a satisfactory accompaniment to their take on Russian salad (like an egg salad). I had mushroom dumplings in a vinegary broth. Side of slaw was really just slaw. Kept it light and ate at the bar, so I defaulted to the kosher classics of my misspent youth in the East Village of New York. The bartender made me their take on the Sazerac, which has cognac in it so it tastes a bit sweeter than the New Orleans classic. I also felt like I caught them on an off night after an awkward exchange checking in for my reservation. They use Toast, which annoyingly required me to create an account. read more

So I have to admit, I judged this place at first. This isn't a cuisine I usually gravitate towards and when I read the menu, I wasn't that excited. However, everything exceeded my expectations, both the service and the food. The woman who greets you, who I believe is married to the chef, makes you feel welcome right away. She gave us a run down of the menu which helps you plan your order. Our server gave us some great recommendations as well. Everything we ate was spectacular. We had the shrimp toast, the beechers farmer cheese, the onion fritters, the golden beets and cream, the dumplings (they were called something else on the menu), the chicken dish and the sausage dish. The server recommended making sure to get every element in a bite and I was blown away with the flavors. I have been to Kachka in Portland a couple times and prefer this place over them. The cocktails were also delicious. I highly recommend this place and am so glad to have something different in Eugene. Aside from how outstanding everything is, the prices are very reasonable. Most of the larger dishes were $16-25 dollars. Make sure to check this place out! I would suggest making a reservation to avoid waiting. But even if you have to wait, it will be worth it. read more

We reserved a spot for our mother-daugther trip to Eugene over Labor Day weekend, and had a wonderful experience at Domek. They were doing a special Ukranian menu, and we really appreciated the thought behind it as well as the dishes themselves. Our favorites: - trout potato croquettes - best croquettes I've ever had, and my daughter's favorite dish - Varenyky (dumplings) - would have us as repeat customers if we lived here - Olive Oil Poached Cod - perrrrfectly cooked and melted in our mouths We had the two mocktails that were offered and enjoyed both of them (very refreshing!), and the desserts were yummy. Alas, I can't remember the name of the desserts. We were recommended one of their new desserts with berries and meringue, but our favorite was actually the one with pastry dough (unrised), walnut and fig -- the creamy filling was soooooo good and the highlight of both desserts. Service was over and beyond. Our host really made the experience magical with her descriptions and enthusiasm describing her husband/chef's background mixed with PNW, and we enjoyed her recommendations. Our server was very kind and professional, making the experience very smooth and enjoyable. If we're back in Eugene, we wouldn't hesitate to return to Domek. Something about Slavic cuisine in a fine dining environment just seems to hit wrong. Worse yet when they claim it is a "Northwest take." No! The food of East-Central Europe is cheap and plentiful. And it is flavorful and filling. There is no need to tune it up. Domek seems to have forgotten that in their attempt to "elevate" an ethnic experience. On a purely objective measure, the food is very good. But it lacks something very important: babcia. That means "grandma" if you don't speak Polish. The service is excellent, but the portions are small, and the prices are large. Eugen needs a Polish/Ukrainian/Russian/Czech restaurant badly. Unfortunately Domek isn't it. Grandma would not make food like this. Give me Gołąbki, give me varenyky, give me kapusta, give me borsch. Make it like grandma. And I will be there every day. read more

So disappointing. Visited Domek shortly after they opened and had a wonderful experience and couldn't wait to go back with friends, but this time it was not at all like before. The dining room is crazy loud even with the newly installed ceiling tiles. We had to literally shout at each other. Service was non existent. We saw our server upon sitting down and after that she rarely made an appearance, loooong intervals between refreshed drinks or more food ordered. The menu is abysmal compared to the first menu. Food is "precious" and skimpy and lacking any flavor. Signature cocktails were meh.... All in all a HUGE disappointment. I'll think long and hard before returning....top dollar pricing with mediocre flavor and scant quantity leaves a lot to be desired. read more

There's a new kid on the block in Eugene and we are SO LUCKY!! Chef Andrew has created the most deliciously unique menu, the cocktails are top notch, and the service is warm and welcoming. Our table of three shared two plates of each course and it was the perfect amount. The menu items may look a little intimidating, but our genuinely friendly server explained all we needed to know. The plates were beautifully presented, the ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were perfect for the season. We got to try most of the growing menu and licked every plate clean. Highlights for me were the Bulgarian farmer's cheese and the řízek (breaded and fried cheese?? Yes please!!) Don't miss the melt-in-your-mouth perogi, or the lángos. But honestly, I might just get a whole loaf of shrimp toast the next time. Amazing. The space isn't huge, but it's bright, inviting, and comfortable. For our party of 4, they gave us their "mezzanine" table that overlooked the restaurant, which has a cool ambiance and isn't too loud. The food was amazing. We shared dishes. The pelmeni were so good we ordered a second order after the first. The shrimp toast, spring pea tartine, langos, and vegetable paprikas were delicious. While eastern European food is associated with heavy dishes, these were light and summery (August). The service was attentive and friendly. We had to wait maybe 10 minutes for our reserved table so they comped us glasses of sparkling wine. read more

Ate here last night for the first time. The remodel of the restaurant is wonderful. Warm and sophisticated. The service by our server Alex was excellent. He was warm and friendly. The food was terrific with a special menu honoring the independence of Ukraine. I had a sausage bath in a mild sweet mustard and my wife had appropriately named "Chicken Kiev ". My husband had the pork loin and I had the cheese pelmeni with blistered tomatoes and a lemon basil sauce, wow, it was amazing, highly recommend, I will be thinking about that dish for a long time. I'm sad to leave 3 stars because I was so excited to try this place! I had such high expectations but sadly I felt I could have recreated many of these dishes at home with more flavor. The shrimp toast needed more lemon/acid. The cucumber salad was not pickled/tangy enough. The perogies dough was thick and flat. The chicken entree needed a starch component. I'm hoping giving them some time will work out some of the kinks!! .
