We used to go to the Baranof to laugh at it...now it seems like a hot spot on the weekends. It's still a shitty dive bar. The bartenders are cranky old women and the drinks are cheap and stiff. As a caveat, I've never eaten in the restaurant, just patronized the bar and theres nothing quite like it. It is commonly and affectionately referred to as "Barfnof" or "The Barf" amongst my fellow unsavories. We love this place in a deeply masochistic way. First of all, a couple cocktails at this place will increase the chances that your liver will eventually be found in a before/after photo comparison. I don't really know what a troglodyte looks like, but if I had to guess I'd say they are the creatures that serve me drinks at Baranof, and they are as charming as a Taylor Swift is a good musician. Nonetheless, there are great people that frequent this place. Not all of their clientele are obnoxious greek row toddlers or surly curmudgeons who may or may not have that kid on your milk carton in a secret dungeon under their house. One thing is apparent though, all of these people plan to get their drink on, and do they ever. The cook, and I use that term loosely, occasionally offers a crock pot full of free gruel for the drunkies. It's usually a wonderfully salty soup du jour(Mmm, that sounds good. I'll have that.) which is great because, well, it's free and by your fourth, fifth, sixth cocktail you'll be drunk enough to eat a dirty diaper through a park bench. The BEST place if you're new to karaoke, and needin' to get your brave on! Lights are dim on the stage, so your face is hard to see. There's even a brightly lit Yelp dot com sign behind you, which will upstage you, visually, the whole time you're up there. So you'll feel right at home. Sound system is not great, so if you screw up a lyric or a note (or three), few will notice! Sufficient room for dancing and generally being a groupie for your posse. We just ate at the Baranof restaurant on Greenwood and OmFGoodness(!), we were both entirely impressed! We were told by the owner that they recently hired a new head chef from Mississippi and that the menu had been redesigned. The food here was always great before, but now it seems that everything in the menu could very well be 'out of the world' level of AMAZING. We ended up ordering the signature biscuits and gravy (made from scratch) with homestyle potatoes, the signature continental burger (super huge and perfectly prepared caramelized onions, bright red tomato and chipotle mayo on a grilled brioche bun) with fries + pickle spear and a bacon breakfast sandwich for later on brioche bun. The home style potatoes and crispy French fries were each the best I've ever had and WOW (: it was all just SO good. Congrats on the renovations and improvements. This has been the most pleasant surprise I can remember since the beginning of COVID 19 LOL. read more

We had decided we wanted to have a pitcher and that we wanted to go some place new... so my boyfriend hunted for a place close ( we also were doing some shopping as well... so we wanted something close to Fred Meyer or Safeway). The Baranof is the quintessential example of a good dive bar. Old men hitting on cute, women (interestingly, as long as the drinks kept coming the women did not mind much, ahh human nature) and not to sound repetitive, but to be repetitive, the ladies behind the bar make the stiffest drinks. We were also impressed with the chilled glasses we received with our pitcher, a rarity in a dive bar these days ( if you know where to get COLD beer let me know! :-)) We went around 8:30pm-9:00pm on a Saturday night. About 15 people sitting around the bar and a few people playing pool. We were so impressed with the hidden location (in the back of a dinner...you actually walk through this, what seems like a deserted diner) in a great area..... Later that night, about 11:30pm we went back with our roommate to show off our secret discovery! Walking up, there was about 10 people hanging out in the front of the diner..hmmmm... we walked in and the place was PACKED! We were surprised at the number of people but it is understandable...with karaoke, stiff drinks, and pirate....stuff? Who wouldn't want to have a drink here!? I am eager to try the S.O.S. since I make a mean batch of it myself! Damn good bar...I have been on numerous nights and it reminds me of our beer bars here in TX. The people are loud, the drinks come quick and they enjoy football just as much as we do. I love the fact that there are college kids and men off the docks in the same room talking shit and cheering beers with each other. Went in for breakfast Sat morning at 10 oclock. Sign said seat yourself, there was a older Asian women at the counter. Sat there for a good 10 minutes, nothing no menu no hello nothing. So I thought well maybe somehow she didn't see me so I moved to the counter and sat two stools away from her,she gave me a glare but said nothing.They had menus there so I grabbed one. Still no hello can I get you a coffee, nothing. Ten more minutes passed, Wow, guess they don't care about business. She clearly saw me. Getting paid to do NOTHING. At that point I walked out, walked a few blocks south and found a wonderful breakfast spot called PETES EGG NEST. It was packed! The owners were wonderful and gave complimentary OJ while customers had to wait to be seated. I got to be seated right away since it was just me and had the most wonderful lobster benny and mimosa. Sad, I had money to spend but apparently Baranof doesn't need it. Its really too bad with proper management that place is big enough it could pack em in. Guess all they care about is the bar business. There was two men that came out extremely drunk and or high at 10 am. Possibly the strongest gin tonic around, assuming that there is tonic. Ordered a white russian for something weaker, only to find that the half and half only topped a vodka shot with minimal kahlua. There is no pretense from the staff who have been there forever. And there is no escaping the fact that you will pay the price the following morning. Hopped off a bus in search of a nightcap at Naked City...when it was closing, wandered across toward the glowing "Baranof" sign, despite the dim interior. Wandered through a darkened dining room and into the red-and-black hued, vinyl-booth-coated, besparkled bar of Baranof. The bar was empty; the 3 of us filled half of it, and immediately produced varied out-of-state ID's before settling into another IPA. Here the fog sets in, not of war, but drunk, musky brotherhood; the music waxing to fill available earspace while the universe narrows to a bright, pinprick tunnel that is warm and smells of familiar comforts, booze, aftershave... Oh yeah, the review. Service was prompt, polite, the friendly bartendress trading some jokes & banter...and the atmosphere was inviting for a dude-reunion. Not everyone's kind of place...but my kind of place. Next time, swear I'll start a night here, instead of ending it...no matter how fitting the latter seems. read more

Live close to the Baranof and stop in now and again (earlier the better). Not many bars like this exist in Seattle anymore. Obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but I appreciate the place. Generous portions when it comes to breakfast and the servers always remember what my order is (creature of habit). Stiff drinks at the bar in the back as well. Seems like regulars have their usual seat at the bar, so I always just order my drink and take a seat at one of the tables. I can't believe I am reviewing this, but I have been enough times that i just have got to do it. The Baranof is like a late night booty call. It usually involves heavy drinking (maybe even Jello shots), embarrassing oneself (very drunken karaoke) and waking up in the morning wondering how you got home. It's always fun, always crazy and always crowded on weekends. The one thing that people may not realize is the food is actually very good. Well... I'm pretty sure it's good. Everytime I have eaten it I have been drinking, but ignoring that fact, I recommend getting something that's fried. AND the most hidden fact about the Baranof is that they have a vat of free soup (usually beef barley) that is leftover from dinner time that versus tossing out, they offer up to the public for FREE after a certain time. Um yeah.. this soup tastes like gold at 2am and it can steady even the most heavy drinking cases. The end. read more

My favorite bar in all of Seattle. It is most certainly a dive but has all the best, most endearing dive qualities. The bartenders are not very friendly (if you're a newbie), the karoake is rocking & the drinks are stiff!! This place does get packed & the karoake/seats can fill up. I am visiting Seattle from Wisconsin. My sister and her friends brought me to this bar. I had never done Karaoke before so I wanted my sister to come up with me. My sister also has a tradition to sing with her roommate. The karaoke guy wouldn't let me and my sister sing together because she had already gone up recently, then later in the night we watched him allow several single singers perform more than once back to back. Shortly after that I ordered a round of 6 fireballs for the 6 friends that came with me. A half hour later I went up for a couple more and was cut off. I have never been cut off from a bartender especially after ordering just one round of shots. I was essentially sober and extremely offended. Not to mention, my twin sister was standing next to me and then asked if she could order the shots (which were clearly for the same people I ordered them for and she said yes). So I was not cut off because the bartender was being a responsible server. It is still a mystery as to why she refused to serve me. Rude staff that really hindered my experience of Seattle. I am not sure what I did to be singled out but I'm glad I was cut off so I didn't have to give more then the $73 dollars and zero tip I paid for my six shots. read more

This place is strange. Don't let the 3 stars turn you away or anything, it's just difficult to give this place much else. But that said, it's alright. I've only gone here for breakfast and it's a decent breakfast. I got pancakes which were huge, I could only finish one, and a side of bacon which was a lot compared to what other places give you as a side. I also got a hot chocolate, which they made with milk rather than water which was good. I hate when diners have watery hot chocolate. The servers were friendly, if not a little odd. Some friends and I were on a west coast Drive about and were looking for a bar that was more our style since there are not too many upper class bars in Montana... That being said this bar was right up our alley!! We had a great dinner in the cafe before hand and then made our way to the back bar...We were greeted by some Greenwood locals and was challenged to a game of pool (they kicked our butts!) The Karaoke started...Now we all know that Karaoke is the word for tone deaf in Japanese,but it didn't matter these people were having lots of fun and so we participated with our little mermaid seagull style crooning (this is not a good thing) and the locals cheered us on by calling out GO MONTANA! the is usually the last place we hit when out and about on a stray Saturday night. SUPER divey. A big fun swarthy sleazebag of a joint (And I do mean this in the best of ways!!!!). I have yet to have a bad experience at the place. They got some true booze mechanics working there who will poor you some seriously stiff drinks. It also cracks me up the shear volume of jello shots that are unleashed on the general public there. They wheel them out about a hundred or so at a time on bakers sheets. Myself and three friends went to the Greewood Car Show on Saturday June 29th and decided to stop at Baranofs for breakfast. The service was very slow and the servers were not pleasant at all. When our food finally arrived it was a disaster. The food was absolutely disgusting and tasted like some type of chemicals. We left the restaurant feeling sick and instantly and ran straight to the restrooms. The men's bathroom were disgusting as well. This restaurant should be reported to the Dept of Labor and Industries Health and Safety Board. I was forced to leave one star in order to post this but is not deserving of this dump. read more

This bar is the fucking jam. My Grandmother, God rest her soul, drank her life away at this bar. Now, its my turn. The crowd here NEVER fails to amaze or 'compel' the shit out of me. I didn't know what to expect when I hopped on my motorcycle to head here for the SHPOC II friday afternoon. I was expecting a german/bavarian themed bar or pub based on the name alone, but what I found was an awesome little (well medium sized) dive bar with fish nets and other nautical "gear" or "items", whatever you want to call them, along with some pretty funny signs adorning the walls and ceilings. It was an awesome place where I was able to sit, stand and walk around and meet and talk with the different yelpers that had come to enjoy some really cheap drinks and eachothers company. Service was pretty friendly and quick despite all us yelpers keeping the bartender and waitress moving for quite a bit. All in all this was a great place to meet some new people in a relaxing, comfortable setting where conversating was easy as there weren't a bunch of drunk frat guys and music blaring. read more

Cool night! Going into Baranof is like entering a dive bar in another state...or maybe just in Spokane. Hanging fish net, a fun rounded bar, karoake. I dig. So before you go into battle, you better decide how much you're willing to lose. Walking into the Baranof I was willing to lose a few things..1) My pride 2) My wallet 3) My heart. All in all, I think the only thing I ended up losing was my heart. I had heard a lot about this place from Yelp, So naturally I was excited to see first hand. I think most of the people who frequent this place have to pay rent for their barstool. There was a lot of regulars here, which says to me, "We like it here and we don't give a flying frick who knows it!" I like that a bar can make people declare such things like that. It's awesome that they had some Tv's...watching Golf or Soccer while sitting on their awesome red booths really was a good way to spend an hour. The service was friendly, the drinks were good, and the bathroom stalls would be a great make out spot if you could get over the fact that the stall doors are super, super, short. This night was very memorable. Who knows if I will go here again, but the time I did spend here was fantastic and one that I will never forget. And not just because of the beauitful decor. read more

I went to karaoke here because I was drunk, and I remembered a friend of mine calling it "David Lynch-ian." Well, he was right. I was David Lynch-ian...but not in a sexy "Lost Highway" way, or an intriguing "Twin Peaks" way. No. This place had more of a skanky, "Wild at Heart" vibe, except that there was way too much country and not enough heavy metal on the karaoke menu for Sailor and Lula to sing along to. I'm pretty sure that the karaoke host was drunk as he fumbled with his giant laserdiscs. The cocktail waitresses have sky-high hair, (which sometimes ends up in the super-strong drinks they mix), and they call you "darlin'." I am not going to give this bar a 1, but I was SERIOUSLY put-off by the crochety-ole bartender lady. I do not pull the "Race Card" often, but I am definitely going to call Racism this time. I am a well-adjusted "token black dude", complete with my North Face jacket, Puka-shell necklace, and flipflops... You get the point... not anybody's intimidating gangster by any stretch of the imagination... All of my buddies here in Seattle are white, so race is not something I even take notice of anymore... so it is very weird when I encounter something that reeks of racism because you usually don't see that around Seattle.... (let me start by saying that I didn't have an issue with any of the other patrons... everyone there drinking seemed cool....) This lady refused to look my way or acknowledge the fact that I was standing there, which made it tough to try and get a handful of these wonderful $2 Jello Shots that other people have mentioned. I had to go over to the OTHER end of the bar where the other lady was working and order them from her. She got them and gave them to the first lady to give to me, who brought them over, not saying much to me. I asked her to just run my card and she muttered some comment about me closing my tab... I didn't feel like dealing with it, and just said for her to go ahead and leave it open. She had an awful attitude and refused to even look at me. A little bit later, I was going to order another drink and attempt to close my tab (again). I stood there obviously wanting something from her.... I even said "excuse me".... And I watched her serve other people and then rifle through the cabinets and under the bar, appearing to be busy, but not apparently accomplishing anything... This went on literally for 10 minutes until it became painfully obvious to my friends what was going on. I can understand 2 or 3 minutes passing where a bartender doesn't notice a certain end of the bar... But 10 minutes, when the rest of the bar really isn't that busy at the moment?? I think everyone can read bar language.. if somebody is leaning forward on the bar attempting to make eye contact with the bartender, it is pretty obvious that they want a drink, no? My buddies all laughed and joked about it... As I awkwardly stood there like a horse's a$$, trying to get this lady's attention... til finally my buddy's girlfriend (hot little blonde) came over and stood next to me... Guess what.... without my friend having to say anything, the crotchety old bartender came over there within 30 seconds and asked her what she wanted, to which she replied "My friend here needs to close his tab". I was pretty livid at that point.... Again, I am not one to quickly pull out the race card... But this was pretty frustrating, and it seemed like this bartender was clearly trying to make me not feel welcome... I'm not saying that it isn't a good dive bar, or that people shouldn't go, because I'd probably frequent it if I lived within walking distance... but I did not appreciate the attitude and lack of service I got when I was there. yes virginia there is a santa clause...and xmas came early for me...my first time at the baranof....a crusty, real people, anything goes type of bar... the baranof is a drinking establishment...and they take there drinks strong here..reminded me of the old frontier room...hh 2.50 wells..and strong like they should be..none of this pussy ass belltown cocktails... they have a cast of characters there..which i found entertaining and refreshing....killer juke box...who played reo speedwagon and amy whinehouse in the same period..u rock!!! stay away condo developers..this is a true gem read more
