This is the only true dive bar I've found in Seattle yet. Reasonably priced drink, casual atmosphere, and a unique mix of characters (including a guy dressed in an Elvis suit!) The Karaoke was a blast. There was a birthday so it was decked out for an 80's night. There was room for dancing while listening to karaoke tunes. The ambience was divey and fun, with fish painted walls. Overall good drinks, nice people. A fun spot! read more

Even though I didn't 'just' go here, other recent reviews remind me of my one experience. Went there with my man and another couple one night kind of on a whim. I guess I should have eaten something beforehand because their "exceptionally-poured" drinks had me checked out after 2 glasses. At first you walk in there feeling like you should be 50+. A couple people at the bar, a hefty older lady bartender, and some typical more-than-regulars sitting outside on the tiny deck smoking away and telling stories that you really don't care about but they made you laugh. They had a couple pool tables, darts, and a shuffle board which we took a great advantage of all. The decor and game equipment hadn't been updated probably ever since it opened, but that gives it a great classic dive bar feel. So, I loved the Native-American lady. She was rocking the Karaoke, hardcore. It was the most awful sound I have ever heard, but it was the most awesome thing I have ever seen. Good for her, she wasn't scared to let loose. It's amazing what alcohol can make you do. I meet one local, a sailor that has been going there for over 10 years. He introduced me to a bunch of his friends that were also long-time regulars, including a giant that was well over 6 feet tall and his half brother with missing teeth who got half-naked during the Karaoke. I also met a bunch of the local Yelpers attending an event including my favorite new Yelper friend, "Danika" ^_^ This was my first Yelp event and I couldn't ask for a better place to have it than Baranof. What took me to the Baranof on Valentine's night, I'm still not sure. I giggled to myself walking by this establishment weeks earlier over the advertisements on their windows, bragging about "warm beer and bad service." I guess my presence in the Baranof was inevitable. My friend who invited me put me on "dive alert" and rightly so. I had the oldest female bartenders that I can remember, and I peed next to someone who could easily pass as a transient. The men's bathroom had its own music piping in, but Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" somehow made me forget the madness that was just a wall away. Did the bathroom have its own DJ? God, I hope not. The presence of Canadian Tuxedos (jean jacket, jean shirt, jeans) was unusually high this Valentine's night, as was the number of women wearing figure skating outfits as tops. There was even one who combined the two. Sorry fellas, she was married. I asked. Plus it was karaoke night and I was treated to a completely depressing version of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" by a hammered 50 year old birthday boy (accompanied by only his niece), who's slurred words still echo in my head a couple days later. Karaoke always brings out the best in everyone, or maybe this was just the usual here? I think I might have to go back sometime and find out. And break out the denim. read more

I'll make this one short. Strong ass well drinks that are a steal on happy hour and a very interesting "Diverse" crowd. We talked to a few people who had been there the last 8 hours and how they used to be homeless. Talked to a couple of Vietnam Veterans and overall got pretty drunk before dinner across the street. The Baranof is the perfect place to finish off a Friday night bar crawl in Greenwood. I did just that for Marc M.'s UYE earlier this year. That was perfect since I hadn't been there in a long time. This is located close to my house and that's always a plus. It's right on the bus line so it's accessible to non-drivers as well. Street parking is available for those who drive. What I love about this place is that I never know who I'll run into. That night, I ran into some folks I knew that I had seen at the last stop on the UYE. Greenwood really is an excellent place for a crawl because of how close bars are together. To be honest, I'm more of a foo-foo bar kinda gal which is perfect since I work downtown. However, I've spent my share of time in dives over the years. This one is a-ok. From the karaoke, to the selection of beverages, to $1 jello shots, it's a fun time but not always my style. read more

ATMOSHPERE: Are we in the 20th Century NorthWest? Plaid. T-shirts with glitter. Women with vests. The men look rough. The women...well...will Sarah Palin come around the corner? Wait....do these people even vote? If they do, they shouldn't. SMOKING: Most of the seats are taken. Half the people are out back smoking, with the lady bartender. You can tell the seats are taken, because they left their inhalers. SIGNS ON THE WALL: Caution-we don't call 911. And, I believe it! BAR MENU: There's always room for jello shots $2. I have recently developed a super duper soft spot for this nautical themed bar/restaurant I affectionately call the 'Scare-em-off'. Closed a mere four hours a day, you can put some food in your gob or swill the see-through-est of cocktails 20 hours a day. My favorite thing to do is come here for breakfast. Yesterday we hit the place around 8:30 in the morning before an epic 10 mile urban walk and headed to the bar portion of the joint. It was completely packed. Let me say that again: The place was filled with senior citizens arguing drunkenly at the bar, 20 something's playing pool, and a birthday party of 50 and 60 year olds who were on the dance floor tipsily shuffling to James Brown and Tom Waits. Was David Lynch hiding in here somewhere filming or is this real? Happily, it's for reals. We like to share breakfast here, a multi-egg Denver omelet to which we add more vegetables (to alleviate the guilt) that's accompanied by a mound of mediocre hash browns and serviceable wheat toast. At $7.75, alongside a couple of eye-openers, we can get out of there for under $20 and tip well. I go 4 stars not for the food, but for the ambiance and the price. read more

I went here while bar-hopping with a friend who was the most incredibly skilled drunk driver you'd ever care to meet. I know that's lame and stupid but hey, I was 21. This place is so skeezy it's almost transcendent. There was a guy with very few teeth leering at me from his perch in the corner of the room. I think he was definitely one of the pirates that didn't make the cut for Seafair. The staff is funny and must have smoked their way to the top of Greenwood's high society, but with the funniness comes a crass attitude that isn't my favorite. I'm not a fan of Karaoke but the people I visited with love it. My Hef was four dollars and fifty cents and I had a good time. There was a douche sitting at the bar, that gave me a hard time but that's to be expected on a Saturday night, I guess. I should have kept on walking to Pete's for breakfast. I ordered blueberry pancakes. The waitress came by a little while later to tell me they were out of blueberries. I told her I'd go with the french toast instead and she said, "Oh, no he's already plating it up. I can give you strawberries or hot syrup instead." What? You don't have what I ordered and I'm not allowed to change my order?! I don't like those squishy strawberries though and I didn't want ordinary pancakes! So rude! She didn't even discount the check. Also, the hashbrowns were mushy and flavorless. Ugh. We've been in for karaoke a few times too and the experience was not great for that either. The bar is not set up well for stage friendly seating and it gets pretty packed. The old biddies at the bar are slow and forgetful. I'm not sure how often you need to go in for them to remember your name and/or drink but I'm guessing even my liver couldn't take it. Crossing this one off the list permanently. read more

Got a few friends that are in this place all the time. It is a quintessential dive bar. But if you are looking for strooooong pours, this is a great place to drink. Have not been brave enough to eat much here. Pro tip: Be kind and respectful to the regulars, they are a tight bunch. They are quick to buy you a drink or roll you out. Still the quintessential "Mullet". I met a ton of really great friends here many years ago for what they called a SHPOC HH. After about 3 years, we recently had a "reunion" of sorts. A gathering of the awesome people who were the young of Yelp , when Yelp was young. A few stiff-ys at the 'Nof will make you all philosophical drunk to think things like that. I still enjoy it here. I exaggerate not when I say that you can read the menu through them. Marietta, the server, has been there for a long time and is wonderfully sweet. The food is fine. Wow... I lived in Greenwood for 3 years and I didn't know there's a dive bar in the neighborhood! My bad! I got to hang out here with Yelpers @ one of the UYE. I was very happy to see all the yelp friends. It's always fun! I guess the bar divided into three areas: 1) front is kinda like pool tables, 2) right in the back is seating area, and 3) left in the back is karaoke. They bar is in between seating and karaoke. There's also a smoking area outside in the back. It was very fun when the karaoke started. The lady's room is a little funky. Why? 1) the door only covers your mid-section and 2) no lock on the door. I managed to take care of my business without scaring others. Overall, I had a great experience hanging out in a dive bar :-) read more

I didn't really have any expectations coming here. I was new to the area and was too hungover to cook anything. So I tried to walk it off and found... Baranof. Huge portions for a decent amount of money. I got one of their scrambles/omelettes and it was fantastic. Food that gets right to the point... Is good food. Taste was there. Not bland. It came with hash browns and a side of toast. For like, 9 bucks or so? Dude. Good stuff right there. On another day I came back and had their cheeseburger. Not bad at all. I'm simple and don't need ALL the fixins, but the produce was good too. I haven't been here at night (yet) so I kind of forsee a new edit when I find out how it goes down here. Service is average. Holy shit, come to this bar. This place is the King of all Dive Bars. I've been in dives before, but this is like a time and space warp. Everytime I walk into this bar I find new reasons to love it. I feel like I'm standing at a NASCAR fan convention held on a fishing boat. Its a toss up which is more prevalent, but both scream CRAZZZYYYY!! I've watched mullett karaoke. I've seen some of Greenwood's finest glow ball jugglers. And each time I come in, I see exactly ONE person sitting in the dining room. Hmmm.... 4 stars for the food here? Yeah. It was cheap, and good. I've paid 11 bucks for food half as good, so they get 4 stars. OK, I'm actually going to review the food here. Not the scary (good scary) bar in the back, but the restaurant up front that serves food old-school, with a smile. Well, they serve it old-school. I had a turkey dinner for lunch, and it was $6.95. And not some warmed-over turkey bits out of a freezer - I'm quite sure this turkey was fresh at some point in the recent past, and very tasty. The whole time I was marveling at the price. 7 bucks for a great meal! Quite good, and a great value. Also, when you order a soft-drink with your buddy, the waitress who has seen it all will leave a pitcher of soda on the table so you don't have to bug her for refills. Rather than preserving boarded up Denny's restaurants, we should come to places like this and experience real diner style food. Seattle needs more places like this. read more

You know what it takes to get kicked out of the Baronoff? You run out of the bathroom, dive, and tackle a friend out of his seat while he is trying to sip his rum and coke... in front of the person serving you drinks. I know this from experience. Baronoff is one of those places that is difficult to review because I have only ended up there after I was already drunk. It's a dive bar with a vaguely nautical theme, and a karaoke machine. The karaoke is fun if you can get there on a night when there aren't too many people there. I was in the Baronoff one night with some friends and our group was the only batch of people in there. It was like having our own private karaoke party. I haven't been to the Baronoff in several years, so my review might be a little dated. But, I'm sure its still a good place to give yourself a pirate eye. read more

I couldn't be happier to review the Baranof for my 200th review! This is my absolute favorite place to be in Greenwood. I love everything about this place, from the bad karaoke selection to the half-stall doors in the bathroom to the hilariously grumpy bartenders. However, I think my favorite thing about the Baranof is the diversity of people that gather here. You have a sampling of Seattle in one room: hipsters, grizzled old men, college kids, a bachelorette party, 40's-ish women wearing leopard print leggings, etc. It's impossible to feel out of place here, no matter who you are. I have yet to try the cafe in the front of the place, but I'm told they have good grub. Typically when I'm here I'm more focused on getting trashed on cheap (AND STRONG) drinks, than food. read more

Everything about the Baranof is great. It's the perfect mix of down home dive with the take-no-crap ladies behind the bar and unexpectedly great food. It's the setting of every working class "after work drinks" place you've ever seen, with crazy decor, crazier regulars, and everything you never knew you needed in one place. For best service at the bar, bring cash and know what you want. The jello shots are legendary. The drinks are the very definition of "stiff". I mean seriously, I've never had more than one drink at the 'Nof. Have the Long Island Iced Tea. Be prepared for epic shenanigans at every turn. Embrace karaoke. Try the free soup. We used to go to the Baranof to laugh at it...now it seems like a hot spot on the weekends. It's still a shitty dive bar. The bartenders are cranky old women and the drinks are cheap and stiff.
