We drive 14 miles back to our old neighborhood for weekend brunch with Marrietta. Its diner food, but it is good and the bloodies are all mary. The low prices pay for gas. A dying breed, seriously happy this place survived gentrification of Greenwood! You have to see the mermaid in the ladies room. Bingo on Saturday mornings usally includes an O-69! Like the Ballard Smoke Shop, but NOW with More Feeling! The 'Local Yokals' might not be happy to see your party of.. oh, I dunno.. 25, but PLEASE don't let that deter you from coming here at least once. The Baranof is a 'Must See' for Summer 2008! Their Long Islands have to be one of the most potent drinks in Seattle. They're as clear as SoDo tap water and word on the street is that they will be the end of ya if you have more than a few.. The menu boasts Chicken Gizzards at $5 and 'All you can eat' Fish n' Chips for $7.99. What do I have to say about that? Wow. Just 'Wow'. As far as the bar goes, make sure you order at the end. You 'will not', Repeat: 'WILL NOT' be served if you walk up to the middle. It is then and only then will they mix you up a well that's 98.7% booze and charge you a measly $3.50 a pop. My night began wearing a suit and my night ended wearing Taco Bell! When I checked the "Yes" box for the Katie S. going away party, a fellow Yelper said, "For your first Yelp event you sure picked a doozy." I really did not understand that statement until two-three drinks into my night when I realized how strong the drinks were and the size of the shots. My night out at the Baranof was truly a great night. The drinks were good, the customers were friendly and interesting, and the staff was helpful. . . in getting me drunk. And the bill was very reasonable for the amount of drinks purchased. After leaving the bar I thought it would be a great idea to walk home. . .until I saw the Taco Bell sign. To make a long story short, the staff at Taco Bell on Aurora/90th got the pleasure of seeing the aftermath of a night out at the Baranof. Baranof: the Mullet of Seattle. i.e. "Business in the front, party in the back." When I first walked in for SHPOC happy hour, I wasn't sure I was in the right place, as I was faced with an empty diner-esque storefront. Then I saw some seedy characters disappearing into the back room, and I knew this was the place for me. The decor was suited for the wharf-monger crowd, plus some halloween decoration for festivity's sake. Waitresses who, bless their hearts, dealt with the yelp crowd bravely and efficiently. The bartenders poured with a generous wrist, just as reported! The ladies room, marked as such with a painting of Olive Oyl, had some mini stall doors, which eliminated that pesky need to squat down to look for feet. I ordered the roast turkey sandwich, and it was OK, though it didn't contain the cream cheese and cranberry sauce as advertised on the menu. I think the Baranof might just be at its peak early in the evening. It is also at its peak once you travel past the restaurant in the front to the nautical themed 1970s lounge in the back. This is when you can have a lovely conversations with Dolly and Marge and their old lady posse as they dine and drink, more of the latter and less of the former. Once the evening carries on and happy hour fades to karaoke hour the Baranof becomes less of a dive and more of the place to be in a land of nowhere else to be. That being said if you want to do some drinking it won't matter what time you show up because the drinks are STRONG!! Oh, and they have free soup if you are so inclined to help yourself. My ass was grabbed at the Baranof--twice! I suppose that's par for the course at this boozy den of sin (and really, I can't blame one for wanting to squeeze my juicy ham). I had fun at my inaugural visit, but I really can't justify more than three stars. I like a good dive on occasion and the Baranof seems like a fun place to get shitfaced and sing karaoke out of tune--but neither one of those activities are up my alley. Plus when a gaggle of Yelpers descends upon the place it can be difficult to move--and it's so loud it's difficult to converse too. Despite the massive crowd the servers didn't seem to have trouble keeping up, nor did they seem particularly surly. Props to them for handling us with grace. I'm sure I'll be back someday. read more

Between getting molested by an inebriated octogenarian and relieving myself behind the none-too-private 3 foot high stall door, Baranof charmed my socks off. It's dark, aging, and unapologetic for being a true dive. Your beer may come with a fruit fly in it, but honey, that's just protein. And if you want a seat at the bar, you've gotta earn it. You need to show up at 6 am. Actually, you need to have shown up at 6 am in 1983 and never have left. You must drink from a rocks glass. You must love the ponies and yell at the TV. Some friends and I ended up at the Baranof last Friday night. We walked in and my friend was like, "is this the bar?" I told her this place was like a mullet, you have your restaurant business portion in the front and then have the bar party in the back. She understood once we walked into the bar. We were the youngest people by at least 50 years. One man had the thickest most powerful mustache I have ever had the privilege of seeing. To my delight, there were not many patrons there that night. What I meant by people was that the service and the clients were all very open to just having a good time, whatever the reason was that they were there for. dive, [daiv] n. : see Baranof. I used to think that Ballard Smoke Shop was the epitome of dive bar in Seattle, but I was wr... not entirely correct. Any doubt was eliminated by the presence of NASCAR signs, pool, an "Internet Jukebox" and outdated karaoke on laserdisc presided over by a tired old man of the sea and performed by patrons ranging from Future Cougars of America to strikeout kings to a man who can only be described as a glam rock hero. The kitchen was closed on the Saturday night we were here but the food is definitely not the main draw despite the signage proudly proclaiming: "Baranof / A restaurant." Saying the drinks are cheap and strong is to say that suns are hot. Our gin and tonics ($3.50) contained a dash of the latter at best, and long island ice teas ($8) were served in a pint glass and contained no more than a spritz of Coke. Despite that, a drunken yet safe night of song was had by all - the only thing harmed in the making of the evening might have been a few livers. Baranof is definitely not the place to bring the culturally sensitive, pick up anyone, or impress a date (unless she's a dentally challenged yet mighty pirate who loves country music) but it is great for a group of friends to unwind. read more

It was lovely to finally take a few hours to pretend I'm really a person again. And it was a nice idea to use a Yelp happy hour for an excuse. It definitely has a nice neighborhood feel to the place. Before I even got to sit down an friendly old patron was saying hello. The bartenders seem like the straight forward type and I like that. Tends to keep the younger crowd away. The best part was getting to hang out with Steve O. and my friends. Strong drinks, fishing nets tacked to the ceiling with interesting and flavorful signage posted all over... You know you are at Baranof in Greenwood! Staff was completely helpful, friendly and on top of things! For the amount of drinks I had, the bill was unbelievably low. The front of the place is a resteraunt so if you want something to eat while drinking, they can definitely oblige with more than just bar nuts. Of course, they have their regulars, but my favorite was the yellow golden lab. What a sweetie that loved everyone and was completely mellow. While I have never seen the bartender smile, I feel she smiles at me when she fills 95% of my glass with vodka (because we all know the orange juice in a screwdriver is just for color). Did I mention this drink was only $4, and it wasn't even happy hour? Yeah, Baranof- we were meant to be in love. This is a quintessential dive bar that guarantees a night with friends that will give you awesome stories to make all your friends who weren't there jealous. The first time I went, I started with a drink and french fries after a long day at work. After I picked myself off the floor from the strength of drink number 1, I finished my french fries, which were delicious. I stayed for karaoke, which was epic. Patti, the lady who runs it, is an absolute pleasure and a great singer. I think I like her version of 99 Redballoons better than the original! Even when the rotation gets long, the entertainment never stops because the people at this bar go for it. May you be blessed with the experience that is the "unintended duet." I have a couple of fond moments from my quick detour to the Unemployed Happy Hour ...the first of which is when the clearly smashed cougar gestured in our general direction and slurred "I LOVE all the young people here!" Then I bought a round of drinks for countless people and the bill was like $23. How much is a PBR in a can anyway? I love the old regulars and I LOVE the decor. I ate a pickle...it was good. I don't think you can really give Baranof more than 3 stars. I came for Melody's birthday and it was a fun spot. Definitely a dive. I had a vodka soda for $4. What a gem of a place, right in the heart of Greenwood. Looks like the inside of a pirate ship in the bar? Check. Some of stiffest drinks in Seattle? Check. Saturday Night Karaoke? Well, after consuming many of the previously mentioned stiff drinks, I wanted some water, like a pitcher of water. Denied. They apparently charge you 1.50 for one measly bottle water. I was so disgusted, that I walked to the nearby Safeway to buy water at a fraction of the price instead. Not only is it completely not the norm to only sell water, but frankly, it's disgusting and outright irresponsible, when you serve drinks as stiff as they do. I love dive bars. I would choose a tav ern over any other drinking venue. Clubs? No thanks, I don't like meat markets. Sports bars, pubs and dive bars are where it's at. The Baranof truly is like a mullet. It almost resembles a Dennys or any other typical breakfast joint in the front, but when you walk through that glorious doorway into the back you are transported into a land like no other. Random wall decor that makes no sense, jello shots, coasters for Kona Brewing even though the Baranof doesn't carry Kona beer, a woman who is probably in her 70s in tight white leggings, thick brightly colored belt, and high heeled furry boots sits on a bar stool, she spins your direction, her legs spread eagle, you vomit... This place has it all, and takes the cake for my #1 dive-iest dive bar to date, and THAT is a big accomplishment. I thought momentarily I saw my friend Kenny from the Rickshaw, but I was mistaken. Accompanied by Tony Ton E Tone and Candle, I finally gave the business side of the Baranof a try and I was not disappointed. The omelette I ordered was enormous and delicious, the hash browns were perfect and heaping, and the french fries I stole were good too. More impressive was the fact that breakfast was about 8 bucks. While there are tons of fantastic restaurants within about a five block stretch, Baranof still serves its' purpose and I remain a fan. I have to admit something, and I know, I'm totally losing cool points. I'd never been in the bar before. I've eaten here a few times but never ventured into the bar. We came for a fellow Yelper's b-day bash and were lucky to grab some seats- there is a full house on a Friday night for their karaoke. I was pleased to get a strong drink with fancy liquor for $6.50 and I got 2 more doubles after a tip from a friend that they were well worth it. I also bought the birthday boy a long island- my bill was about $50 so I'm not so sure I should have believed the tipster. And, when it comes to karaoke, I'm no expert but let's say I'm an enthusiast and I wasn't very enthused about this place. The hosts were nice enough and had laser discs (HOLLA!) but the sound system was pretty crappy, and due to our seats in the back and some weirdness in the front of the bar with a bunch of folks that probably just got off work at Adobe, it wasn't really workin' for me. What a neat spot! I'd never been to Baranof until this past weekend and I really had a great time. The crowd was diverse, the drinks were strong, and the place was hoppin'! Karaoke came on later in the evening and kept the crowd thoroughly entertained. There are plenty of stools at the bar, plenty of tables for small and large groups, a billiards table, and an outdoor smoking area. At the end of a long night of drinking, we happened upon Baranof. At first we wondered if it was open because despite the large neon open sign, there didn't seem to be anyone inside. But thankfully, there was a handwritten sign on the door saying "Come inside, pull door closed behind you" or something to that effect. We did, and oh how glad we were that we did. Once inside and through the empty restaurant, we happened upon a pretty raucous karaoke bar, rife with extremely drunk revelers singing Guns 'n Roses songs and dancing like maniacs. We knew we'd found the place at which we wanted to end the night. This place is awesome. I have to give it 5 stars for the Olive Oyl on the girl's bathroom door, the hilarious old karaoke MC who, although he was pretty drunk too, never seemed to miss a beat and was always on hand to change the laser discs, the funny ladies behind the bar, and the overall raucousness of this place. This place also supplied us with the best quote of the night. When we asked the extremely drunk group of dancing singers if they were celebrating a birthday or a bachelorette event, they said "this is just how we live, man." A night at Baranof is a guarantee of a pretty horrendous hangover the next day. But it won't feel so bad when you remember just how much fun you had getting drunk there. read more

Only a measly one block jaunt from my apartment, this people watching gold mine of a bar is my destination of choice when staying close to home and in need of a stiff drink. I hear their food is pretty tasty too, though, I must admit, I've never had the pleasure except for a grilled cheese sandwich one drunken afternoon. I've been here on a number of drunken occiasions usually at the end of my night... I really never wanna see this place when I'm not drunk... I don't want to know what it really looks like. Anyways, if you're looking for debauchery, jello shots, karaoke, drunken 21yo newbies and amature drinkers making complete fools of themselves this is the bar to go to! The women behind the bar have been there since time began and they will not take shit from anyone nor will they rush to serve you if they are "busy" smoking outfront and I'll be honest that's pretty much why I love this place... it's just a down and dirty dive bar. Not my bag most nights of the week considering I'm generally designated driver but it's certainly worth while to come down and pound a few if your goal is to just get drunk. read more

I would come back here with friends, because I do love the Greenwood neighborhood in general, but I'd probably rather go across the street to Naked City if it was my choice. Best damn karaoke spot in Seattle. And this is coming from a guy who normally shudders at the thought of doing anything that starts with the letters 'k a r a o.' But, as what usually happens to people when they're under the influence of alcohol, self perception while doing certain activities becomes WAY exaggerated. First, let me pay a compliment to the layout of Baranof. The karaoke room and the bar are actually in separate rooms. Why would I pay a compliment to this? Because it means that, when I sing on stage, people have to lob their empty beer bottles further in order to hit me. So that's probably a discouraging factor (or maybe it's because I chose such awesome songs as Toto's 'Africa' that people refrained from pelting me). The drinks at Baranof are stiff. Don't expect anything fancy here, but you'll be able to find copious amounts of the usual suspects like Jack, Absolut, Jose Cuervo, and other bad words. Their beer selection is not bad, either. What I enjoy most about the Baranof are the patrons. You'll find everything from the blue collar world mixed with the stiffs from the white collar world. And what is binding everyone together, you might wonder? Bad singing, heavy drinking, and high fiving. Plenty of high fiving. Enjoy this relic that serves the neighborhood of Greenwood well. read more

I decided to wait until I had been to the Baranof twice before attempting to review it. That was necessary to allow the full experience to be fully absorbed and semi-processed into coherent thoughts and phrases. I don't know how happy the local residents (and I call them residents because I am convinced that they have spent a good part of their lives on their favorite bar stool here) are that about once a month a group of rowdy yelpers descend on their nautical habitat. But can they blame us? The pull is just too strong. These are my favorite things about Baranof, in no particular order: 1. When I run out of things to say to my drinking companions, I can still be thoroughly entertained by the cornucopia of decorations on the walls and ceiling. In fact, I propose that the next Yelp scavenger hunt be conducted solely within the confines of Baranof. 2. I have been deeply inspired by the fashions and hairstyles of the bar-ladies. I am currently in the process of converting most of my t-shirts in to fringed, off the shoulder little numbers. Watch out. Hot. 3. The doors to the bathroom stalls are conveniently short enough to allow me to multi task and do my primping without leaving the stall. This is a time-saving measure, and leaves more time for drinking! 3. Speaking of drinks, they are good and strong. My only complaint is that they ran out of Rose's lime juice on my first drink, and hadn't replaced it by the time I ordered my next. My vodka gimlet just wasn't the same. I can't add the food to my list of favorites. I had a bite of the all you can eat fish and chips, and the breading (yes, breading, and not batter) was soggy and had no flavor. read more

I'm giving it five stars just because the reuben sandwich is unbelievable. It's so good that I feel a little inappropriate eating it in public, what with the orgasmic moaning. When I went to Greenwood Academy of Hair I made it a priority to have a reuben there at least once a week. I couldn't tell you the first thing about the rest of the food... except that they have bacon salt, which is always a plus. Walking into the back of the can be a little disorienting your first time, one minute you're in a homey greasy spoon diner sitting next to a couple old guys reading the paper drinking highballs (at noon) and the next minute you're in the shantiest of divebars. Every Saturday I would stop in for a gin & tonic or five... their drinks are no joke. Those little old ladies take a highball glass, fill it almost to the top with gin, add a just the weensiest splash of tonic, and before you know it you're totally schnockered and getting hit on by an octogenarian alcoholic. Went there with Mona L. and Aaron E. aftering going to Neptune Coffee for Yelp Office Hours. I heard rumors of an older woman with a rocker making drinks behind a counter. Then someone else mentioned that their Long Island Ice Teas were more liqour than ice or coke. The tales of this place just got progressively more far fetched. Like you could get one Long Island Ice Tea for a family of four and get the whole family drunk by just the Father drinking it. No, not that far fetched, but you get the idea. Unfortunately, when I went I didn't see the older lady with a rocker. I did see a mighty fine lookin woman serving up deliciously strong drinks. I think the heavy pour rating of this place is a bit high though. I think drinks at Earl's on the Ave are quite a bit stronger. The kitchen was closed unfortunately but they did have free soup available for those who wanted it. For smokers, they have a little porch thing right next to the bar where you can step out for a bit and smoke your little cancer sticks. It's ok, I do it once in awhile too. They also have parking right in the back too. I actually think it would be really fun to have a secret outdoors drinkings event behind the Baranof. We'll get drinks inside and just sneak them outside. Thanks to Mona L. and Aaron E. for being such great drinking buddies on a random Tuesday night. We'll all convene together soon for more drinking!
