Good option in Spearfish if you want a quick meal. We had just driven back from Devil's Tower in WY (great spot to visit, but a lot of the local stuff closes for the winter), and I dropped into Barbacoa's for a late lunch. They had a lunch special: burrito bowl with drink and chips for $15. I had the pork bowl (carnitas). It was a huge amount of food, and getting the chips and drink essentially for free made it a bargain. Everything was good. The carnitas were tasty. The pico de gallo was fresh and tasty. The set up is similar to Chipotle's, but the queso is included (with the bowl, at least). The chips were excellent. They make chocolate chip cookies fresh daily, and my husband said it was delicious. read more

Not sure how they think their burritos are worth what they charge for them. About 50% more than going to QDOBA or chipotle and the quality doesn't make up the difference. Decent taste, but I wasn't impressed enough to go back... also, it took so much time for them to make our order, even being the only ones ordering. This place is awesome! Like a locally owned, cooler version of Chipotle. Sparkling water and beer options in the fridge, stickers on the walls in the bathroom, and a good mix of oldies and pop hits playing - Dolly Parton, Train, The Temptations, etc. There are lots of options for toppings and vegetables, and all the meat looked fresh. You can get queso and all the toppings in your bowl for free - only guacamole is extra. I got steak and each bite was tender - unlike when I go to Chipotle. Lots of food in the bowl, and staff was friendly and walked us through how to order. I would come again! read more

Got the salmon bowl. Was told that the fish was blackened. It didn't taste seasoned. She took it out of the fridge in a plastic bag and microwaved it. I love eating plastic. Server was wearing a dirty sports bra as a top. She looked dirty. The place was dirty our table was dirty and the bowl was flavorless. No guac either. read more

For a local competition against broader brands like Qdoba or Pancherros, Barbacoa's does an excellent job. For every bite is bursting with fresh and zesty flavors. Fresh ripe tomatoes, rich four cheese queso, and rice that pops. Topped with delicious guacamole and refreshing cilantro. It sounds like every other restaurant ever, but you can taste the authenticity seamlessly blended with local flavors. The seating is somewhat limited but the decor is wooden and nice. On a personal note, my preference to authentic Mexican flavors did not quite feel satisfied here. While it feels close, it misses my mark of being a fully authentic Mexican restaurant, but is absolutely excellent otherwise. I will return again later to edit my review when the items I would like to try are in stock, as the Barbacoa Beef is somewhat sweet, and not quite what I was hoping for. We stopped in on a weekend at about 2pm. I didn't think it would be busy, but there was quite a line. I quickly realized that the line was because things were moving soooo slowly. The food was ok. The workers weren't rude. They all seemed very young, very unmotivated, and very unorganized. I can say we probably won't stop back in. read more

Came from out of town for the weekend and was really craving a nice burrito. After searching I found this place and decided to give it a try despite some less than stellar recent reviews. I gave them two stars because the food is indeed edible, but that's about it. While the staff was friendly enough it definitely is an establishment run by some uninspired kids and it comes through in the food. I'm not saying the youth of today can't make excellent food, quite the contrary, but it's obvious these kids are plagued by uninterested leadership that has failed to set them up for success. From past reviews it seems this place used to great. I don't know if it's under newer management or if the owner has lost their zeal for this business, but something seems to have gone awry. The one word that ties every aspect of the food together is the dreaded B-word. BLAND. The absolute last word that should ever come to your mind when eating Mexican-inspired food. Every single layer of every dish suffered from a severe lack of seasoning. When I make carnitas at home I throw the whole Mexican section of the spice rack at it, not to mention citrus, vinegar, and chipotles in adobo, but I'm extra. I've also had amazing carnitas that were seasoned with salt pepper and maybe one or two more spices. The carnitas I had here tasted like they'd forgotten salt was even a thing let alone any other spices. It was as if they'd asked a British person to make carnitas with no direction whatsoever. I won't bore you with the details of each element of our dishes, but suffice it to say the lids stayed on the spices in the preparation of each and every one of them. The lone bright spot was the mango salsa in my wife's burrito bowl. The mangoes they used were almost perfectly ripe. Don't even get me started on the rest of the salsas. I tried a bunch of them. Why was every single one of them so sweet!?!? Very odd. One nice thing is the restaurant itself seemed to be reasonably clean and in good repair. I definitely wasn't worried about eating the food, although the person making the burrito bowl did scoop the rice into the dish using her gloved hand instead of the spoon in the container. Not the most sanitary method, especially when it comes to cross-contamination, but I'd been watching and she did put the gloves on immediately before literally handling the rice lol. If you're in town and craving a burrito or anything else they serve, I'd skip this place for now. Perhaps it was an off day and they can turn it around, but I won't be giving them a try during any subsequent visits to town until I see some evidence they've made some improvements. read more

I was excited to eat here because my Colorado friends have all told me me that it was a decent enough place to eat. I'm all ok on cold food because I can easily take it home and reheat it but that's if it wasn't for the service. So maybe I came in at the wrong time or a bad time, but the person making my burrito (long blonde hair gal) first didn't acknowledge me, and then when she did looked put out with me and while making burrito she seemed kinda rushed when there was no one behind me. But the real kicker is after I paid and sat down to eat all I could hear was the my server talking bad about me to her coworkers in the back. That in itself made my food feel sour. Ambiance is nice but nothing to fancy... there's was only like one family besides me (Also I've worked in the customer service industry, and can say I under stand looking done with life and being rushed... I don't understand how you can talk bad customers while they are in the same building as you) read more

This place used to be so good, but unfortunately it seems to be going downhill. The food quality is not as good as it was a few years ago, but the big thing is the service. It seems like it's being run by kids. The last two times we've been in, they've been really rude (acted put out by anyone ordering). Went for a quick lunch, ordered the steak burrito to go....and ohh my...never again I think the owners/staff need refreshers on food safety as I got several barely cooked and one very RAW piece of steak in my burrito (see pic). This is disgusting and unsafe. Rare is fine..if it was brought up to a safe internal temperature....no way this could have happened with this piece of steak. I will never be back, nor will I recommend this place. I simply cannot believe that this happened, and I hope I do not get seriously ill. read more

The burritos were huge and we couldn't finish them. Packed up half remaining burritos to eat for lunch the next day. Kids ordered the nachos and said they were good. You get plenty of fresh food. Taco's just ok. Put the queso in bag with chips upside down and lid partly came off. After 5 it's all kids working. Music so loud you can't hear them and they can't hear you. Acted like it was a pain to make us two taco's and chips and queso. Nothing good enough for pictures and I think the AC needs work, it would have been cooler outside at the picnic table in the shade and breeze after riding the motorcycle all day. read more

I don't know if I caught the staff on a bad day or that they are upset about the slow pace of the construction on Jackson Boulevard, but they missed the mark today. My burrito was plain at best and ugly at worst. The fillings were neither hot nor cold, sort of luke warm so that the shredded cheese didn't really melt. In all it was unpleasant to consume. My advice is to go to Los Cabos and get a real burrito. read more

Lived in Spearfish through Barbacoa's infancy and it was always a go to. Moved away a few years ago and have been back to visit several times, every time I've become more and more disappointed in this place. First off the place is not very clean. I stepped on spilled food on the floor and soggy icky food got in between my shoes and toes, the decorations are falling off the wall. The quality of the food is good, but the portions are quite a bit smaller and the prices have gone up. Burrito bowls are only half filled now, I ordered chips and queso and got a large brown bag of chips with.... 8 crunched up chips in it. When I asked for a new bag (which I'm not one to complain ever), they told me I'd be charged for another order. They told me the bags are pre-measured now and that's the same amount everyone gets. It's hardly enough to cover 1/3 of the queso they provide. The service has been very slow the last several times and without a lack of sassy high school boys. It's quite a shame to see what this place has become. read more

Drive thru only right now, but the food is spectacular! We had bowls and burritos of various kinds and were so impressed by the unique flavors in each. The service was also much faster than we expected; we were the fourth car in line and only waited 15 minutes, including the time it took to order and get our own food. This unassuming "burrito and wrap" joint in a strip mall was the best meal we had in South Dakota. It's sort of the Chipotle deal. Choose a protein and toppings for a burrito, tacos, salad etc. They have some Asian centered sauces, plus all the usual tex mex stuff. The kids had little quesadillas that came with chips and cutie. I think $6 for the kids meals. I had a pulled pork salad and my husband had a beef burrito bowl. All so good! Enough to take home. Casual environment. Lots of options for different flavors such as Thai, Indian, traditional Mexican, and even Buffalo-wing style! Simple burritos/tacos/nachos/bowls, customized in ways to fit a variety of palettes and heat-tolerances (lots of creative hot sauces and salsas). Their system of keeping a bunch of food out then rolling your selections into a burrito is notoriously unsanitary, as demonstrated by Chipotle's recurring problems (they closed the *entire* chain for a day as an emergency measure).
