Everything about our dining experience was excellent. The food was delicious and exceeded expectations and the tiramisu was the best I've had since traveling to Italy. My friend and I have been coming to Barbaro every time we're nearby visiting the historic homes in Hyde Park. Service is excellent and they were able to accommodate all of my friend's dietary preferences. It is one of the only restaurants that we feel comfortable eating inside since there is a table in the back that is quite distanced from all of the other diners. I was fortunate enough to visit on Chicken Parmigian night. Chicken was cooked perfectly and was tender and juicy. Portion was generous and I was able to make two meals out of it. On the other occasions that I visited here I got a fish special and the burrata ravioli. The skin of the ravioli was super fresh. The filling was smooth and flavorful. The oil carried the basil flavors well. The cocktails here were above average. The coffee blvd was the most unique one. It is a twist on a traditional Negroni cocktail. The addition of some coffee infused Campari combined with the herbal notes of the vermouth made a unique bitter flavor that I found to be more appetizing than that of a traditional Negroni. Mr. Brightside was an excellent choice for a summer night. The elderflower and citrus combination was quite refreshing and went well with the fish special. Witchmaker was a light version of a whiskey sour with some ginger. It's good for someone who wants to start on whiskey cocktails since the whiskey was lighter compared to others I've had. The dessert I gravitate towards is the coconut sorbet. It was packed with coconut flavor and had a smooth texture with a few bits of shaved coconut folded in. So, I came here for lunch on a weekend and was seated right away. They have a limited lunch menu on the weekend and my server was very nice. I ordered the Farro Salad, and just thought it was nothing amazing. I guess I didn't realize there weren't any greens with it, so the absurd amount of grains is on me (though it was filling), but the flavor was pretty lacking. There was some pieces of apple and some cubes of autumn squash, but there were only a few pumpkin seeds and the maple-cider vinaigrette was just a step above nothing being on there. I like subtle, but it was almost flavorless; better than being too sweet. Overall just disappointing food. read more

I used to frequent this place more often and have not been in about 6 months. The quality of the food has gone way way down. The calamari was undercooked and smaller portion than before. The branzino was overcooked and looked like it had been sitting in the sauté pan for days. The espresso for the affogato was cold and it is not supposed to be cold. The service is always good.' I ordered a steak medium rare and it came out medium. I sent it back and the manager came back out with the steak on the plate saying, "this is how my chef cooks medium rare" Medium rare is pretty basic, Chef! As I told the waitress to wrap the steak to go as the dinner was already over, they wrapped just the steak and no sides which came with it. It's a strong recommendation when you say a restaurant is your default. By that, I mean whether you need a nice weeknight meal out or you have guests from out of town, Barbaro is always first on our list. The menu retains the classics, but there is always a healthy amount of specials to keep things fresh. A standout for us, when available, is the Salmon with corn pudding. Also, chicken parm night is worth planning your Sunday around. Whether you're a local or a traveler passing through, Barbaro should be at the top of your list. read more

We made it back after at least a year hiatus and the place did not disappoint. The atmosphere is so warm and welcoming and comfortable. The service was top notch from the friendly welcoming of Amanda to the great service at the bar and at our table. The food was delicious and I especially loved the cipollo pizza and the calamari. What a delightful evening of delicious food in a calm, warm setting. We chose an early reservation and had excellent service. The place is known for the pizzas, so we had to have one. We experimented with a magnificent meal of the Cabrini Pizza: fig spread, goat cheese, pear, arugula, and truffle oil. What a blend of sensations for the palette! The one slice left was delicious cold the next day. Not equal at all - but a suitable compliment to the pizza - was the fish of the day, Cooked halibut with farro, truffles, and broccolini with a swipe of some sort of plum sauce. The fish was tender and perfectly prepared, but the dish lacked a cohesive flavor. The farro was uninspiring and softer than I enjoy and the broccolini was as expected: prepared tastefully and firm. After the pizza, I expected equal greatness in a marriage of flavors and did not find it anywhere. The cannoli cream was not sweet; it was bland. The taste reminders me of Cream of Wheat- which I enjoy. But for a cannoli cream, it wasn't something to enjoy a lick on its own. The cannoli shell carried the flavor of the oil, so after a bite, I was left with the taste of a Mexican sopapilla. The chocolate sauce added the sweetness - but too much- and added a flavor missing due to the bland cream. The cappuccino accompaniment was too much foam and just 2-3 sips of coffee. I'd return for the pizza and the wine (montepulciano d'abruzzo, zaccagnini, italy 2019 $14/glass), and happily sit at the bar to enjoy the atmosphere and unique pizza experience. If you are antiquing in the area or passing nearby, this spot is worth the visit. read more

Totally not accommodating and they are beyond obnoxious. Went to order take out and was told they are too busy. Went twice when they opened and they couldn't sit me (5pm). They are overpriced for mediocre food. Guess they don't need regular customers take locals for granted. read more

Worth every penny!! Took my friend out for a birthday dinner and everything was lovely!! Staff was great, we had a corner booth by the pizza station and had a lovely conversation with the young man who was working! Glad we got to enjoy the Winter menu and hoping to try the Spring menu again soon!! read more

Barbaro has been open for a little over a month and you'll never know that because it runs as if it had been in business for years... A well oiled machine. We came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary on a Saturday night. We had reservation and was seated promptly. I love how clean and warm the decor is, feels intimate and welcoming. They had a nice list of mixed drinks ($11-12), selection of wine, and offer bottled beers ($5-7). For starters, we had the meatball polenta in tomato herb sauce. There were 3 meatballs in an order and they were tender and flavorful. For dinner, we both had their specials: I had the Grilled Halibut with white bean & kale and hubby had the pork chop with spetzel & spinach. Both dishes were solid but the pork chop was the winner. So good! The dishes were portioned just right that leaves enough room for desserts in your belly. We ordered cannoli (3 small cannoli in an order) and the lemon custard tart. They decorated our cannoli plate with "Happy Anniversary", which was a nice touch. Cannoli was good, but the lemon tart was amazing! We loved it. It was creamy, not too sweet, and the pine nuts on top compliment the flavor perfectly. All in all, a wonderful meal. Our dinner came to $118, which is reasonable for a nice night out. We will definitely come back for more. Great addition to Millbrook! ...We came back here again the next month and got the braised short rib and margarita pizza.... Braised short rib was amazing. Food is just fine no complaints there. The waitstaff seems terribly uncomfortable and unhappy. I'm left wondering if I've caught them on "off" days or if the environment behind the scenes (difficult/harsh management) is causing their cold behavior. Got thanksgiving takeout and it was delicious!! Everything was seriously perfection! I was certainly nervous getting take out thanksgiving for the first time ever but this exceeded my expectations. They also brought the food out to my car for curbside pickup so it was SAFE. I certainly would go back to try the normal menu! read more

To give one star to write this review is a stretch. Their obnoxious attitude doesn't sit well with good, nice people...if they would take their noses out of their darkness and realize they are not the only game in town...tried to call for a reservation just before 5 pm....no answer...get there at 5:01. Place is empty as a ghost town.....do we have reservation they ask...we say no...they have to check with a manager to see if they can seat us...we are told no. Only outside or the bar...no thanks we say....this is not the first time they portray themselves above others....they offer takeout..oh really..we went there for take out and were told they were too busy.....well fine diners of Millbrook..do not be down hearted...there are far better restaurants in town and around the area with better food and lower prices and very friendly and accommodating...they welcome your business unlike Barbaro Restaurant read more

We are locals and frequent visitors to Barbaro. Tonite (Sunday 6/6) we were greeted (or not) by a very surly new hostess. No smile to be seen. Service was horrible. My kale salad was tasteless. My wife and I enjoy Market St. in Rhinebeck so we were happy that Barbaro was opened down the street from our house in the village. We have been here three times since they opened and every time we received great tasting food, excellent cocktails, and service that was both attentive and friendly. I've only ever ordered take-out from Barbaro, but the food and service has been excellent thus far. Definitely a higher-end establishment with well-trained chefs. I haven't heard anything negative about the way owners-managers treat staff, so that is why my rating maintains five stars. I take into account the quality of workplace-life balance and compensation of employees when rating the quality of a restaurant, because it doesn't matter if the food is delicious if the owners are abusing the staff or underpaying and over-working, which so often happens in the restaurant industry. Great drinks and appetizer. Then entree arrived. Salmon filet was raw, actually cold inside. I pointed it out to the waitress but was polite and said, "no big deal," assuming that we would have something taken off the bill. Nothing was taken off the bill. Disappointing. I've worked in restaurants and when an entree is not to the customer's liking, an adjustment is made. They should have comp'd us drinks or an appetizer. We won't be back. read more

Three strikes. I tried to like Barbaro three times. Food is just OK for the high prices. I will never go back to Barbaro. RUDE! The hostess was pleasant last night, but the two other times I ate there the hostess was rude. All three times our waitress was horrible! How is that possible? Waitress had poor hygiene, provided horrible service, rude, and incompetent. The high prices come with certain responsibilities: respectful and professional staff, hygienic, above average food, pleasant atmosphere, etc. This place fails on all accounts. My wife and I had a pretty pleasant experience at Barbaro. Great background music, pleasant atmosphere and we were both pretty happy with our meal (got the steak). The calamari was awesome for our app. We both got the steak and fries for our main. The steak was a little undercooked, but I've always found that to be a sign of a good restaurant and would much prefer my steak a little undercooked vs overcooked. I also asked for a Moscow Mule (which wasn't on the menu) and it was delightful. My wife also really enjoyed her mocktail which they also whipped up quickly. To mimic some of the other reviews, the staff seemed a little uninterested and the customer service was perfectly fine, but forgettable. Staff weren't rude by any means, but just seemed a little robotic and failed to make a connection with the restaurant goers. However, overall experience was very positive and I'll definitely be going back for the steak! read more

Must have been an off night - the last two times we were there was much different so I am struggling even writing this review. Appetizers were flavorless something we had with beans that were mushy and over cooked. Service was really slow and served "with attitude". We couldn't organize the dinner the way we wanted it. The server was training someone and spending a lot of time standing in the corner with them showing them something on the computer I guess. We ordered what looked like the "best value" wine on the menu -- which for the quality of wine they have is way way over priced (especially by the bottle, or even the Millbrook wine in the cask). It was served in a carafe and the carafe was put in a corner of the restaurant away from the table - so with no service we had to walk across the restaurant to get more when our glasses were empty. The server refused to take our app order, saying that she wanted to take the app and entree orders all at once, but wouldn't do that either because she was "busy doing something else" (more time in the corner with the computer). 20 minutes went by with empty wineglasses and no app (or entree) order. Other things ensued associated with one of our guests that din't like water spots on her wine glass, and that can't drink chilled water, and a door being left open and 2 people in our party of 5 being cold. And it seemed like the servers left it open for their own comfort rather than that of the guests, or maybe they just thought we were being a pain and were ignoring us. This caused an uncomfortable and embarrassing confrontation, and in the end we ended up leaving the restaurant after trying to eat the appetizers and drinking "bad to average wine at a really high cost" according to the one person in our party that is a Sommelier from Italy (one couple in our party lives in Tuscany full time). We've been to Tuscany too and I do have to say, it's hard to beat the freshness, quality and service you get at a good Tuscan restaurant (and it does NOT have to be expensive). We were comped by the manager for most of what we ate/drank before leaving, and walked across the street to have burgers at Nooch's. :( all in all a weird and embarrassing night. The manager did what she could to save the dinner, said she would address the serving issues and we thank her for that, but it was too late at that point. read more

I can't rave enough about what a great addition Barbaro is to Millbrook! The menu is simple yet fantastic (I've made my way through as many of the appetizers and entrees as I can and can't wait to try the rest), the staff is polite, informative and fun, and the space is crisp, clean and inviting. Clearly the popularity of the new place in town hasn't worn off as a snowy evening in February is just as crowded as night one.
