Showed up 8 minutes late to an appointment. They refused to see me because you can only be 5 minutes late (something that was never told to me). I was told to come back 2 hours later. I told the guy he'd be losing a loyal customer over 3 minutes. He didn't care. He began arguing with me and making up lies about me. Plenty of places to get the same $50 haircut. The cut was good but the attitude and arrogance is enough to make me go else where. I've been here twice and got an ok cut the first time and a solid cut the second time. BUT, the guy Rolin just made me feel unwelcome. Very arrogant and just straight up not friendly. I really wanted to leave mid cut. I wont go back just because of the attitude. Been going to Marcus for about 4 years now having followed him from his previous employ straight through to the opening of his own business. Even during his transition he was able to make time for me... talk about customer service!!! Honestly, Rolin is a talented barber, however, he is so confident in his abilities that he doesn't quite listen to what you're asking for. I went in and showed Rolin a picture of my hair from a few weeks back and just wanted a simple clean-up. Instead, he decided to cut nearly an inch off of my hair. Seriously?! I waited a couple days to write this review because I wanted to make sure I wasn't overreacting, however, my hair looks nothing like I wanted. Was in town for a job interview, had a few hours to kill, so I booked a haircut with Rolin about a week or two in advance. So happy I did. When I told him I just wanted your basic, corporate friendly side part, he merely replied "Thats it?" Yup, nice and simple I told him. So he went to work with his arsenal of tools. He ended up giving me a much more fashionable take on the side part, tapering the sides and back of my hair. Still very office friendly, yet it absolutely looked like something you'd see more on a magazine cover than coming from a supercuts. I got so many compliments on my hair afterwards, I felt it absolutely justified the high price. Which, keep in mind, this place is really a splurge. Wonderful place. Marcus' fashion focus directly correlates to his intricate attention to detail when cutting your hair. He did a wonderful job trimming my hair after I came over from a barber-friend. Best experience I've ever had at a men's hair salon. Period. After scouting out the territory in the Flatiron district, I decided to go to Rolin over at Barbering by Marcus and I couldn't have had a better experience. In case you're not convinced by the reviews, let me break down my experience: 1) Upon entering I was quickly greeted by Rolin who gave me a very relaxing shampoo wash and an (insisted upon by Rolin) post-work complimentary Bourbon. Off to a great start. 2) Rolin took the time to look at the pictures I brought in and quickly assessed how we could make it happen. He then massaged my shoulders with a handheld massager. Perfect! 3) Rolin's attention to detail and communication skills are impeccable. He is clearly a master of his craft. He was kind enough to explain everything he was doing, answer all questions I had, and demonstrate how he was using each pair of scissors to get different textures going on in my hair. 4) The result? Flawless. I usually get a pretty simple cut (short on the sides and longer up top to be slicked up and back) and Rolin delivered it perfectly. His attention to detail is amazing and it clearly showed. While most stylists and barbers will give you the cut you ask for, I felt like I walked out with a version of the cut perfectly tailored to me. 5) Afterwards, Rolin shaved my neck with a classic straight razor and then gave me ample time to examine my cut and see if I wanted anything altered. For the first time ever, I didn't. 6) We've all had that moment after our first shower after the barbers where we try to replicate their styling magic and realize a hair or two is out of place. I've been there a few times and usually feel awkward going back to the shop to have a thing or two altered. However, Rolin called me this morning to see how I liked the cut. Who does that? Only someone who truly cares about his customers. I didn't have anything I wanted fixed (again, for the first time ever); the freshness I walked out with was the same freshness I saw in the mirror this morning. I can't recommend this place enough. Just moved to the flatiron area about two months ago. I walked into a random barber shop on park ave and got my head "butchered" by some unprofessional guy in the back of a shoemaker. After that experience I knew I had to do some serious research before I walked into another barber shop. I stumbled on this place and after reading all the positive reviews , you can not help but go there. In the back of my head I was thinking . There must be something up. There's no way all hear people had a positive experience, it seemed too good to be true. I made an appointment with Rolin at 9am on a Monday morning, and sure enough, he was ready to do his thing. Marcus is an adept and highly professional barber. Without question, he's one of the best in New York. Great focus on his work is what sets him apart. Of course he's friendly and happy to catch up, but his attention is on getting your hair exactly right, down to the fine details. I am new to this scene. I've never paid more than $20 on a haircut and BC of this place, I'll never do that again! There is a reason these guys have the reputation they have. Here's why it's worth $50: 1. The people - as luxurious as this place is, it doesn't have that snooty "I'm better than you" feel that you find at a lot of these nice salons. Rolin greets you with a smile, a quick wash (and he asks if the temperature is ok even though he knows it's perfect). Then he sits you down and puts on these vibrating massage gloves and proceeds to give you a near orgasmic shoulder rub. Then He asks if you want a beer or a bourbon. You start thinking "I'm never leaving". 2. The cut - I just wanted a modern dude cut with the short sides and long top. Jose shows you examples on the iPad. I tell him I don't want it completely shaved on the sides because I have a huge mole above my ear. "Not a problem" he says, accepting the challenge. Comes out so perfect, I don't have anything to complain about which is rare. That's all. read more

Hands down, absolute best barber ever!! Yes Marcus might be a little pricey, but one gets what one pays for, and Marcus is definitely worth it. I like to change up my do every now and then, but never really know what I want, and every time Marcus has taken my vague descriptions and worked magic. I have seen Rolin twice now over 3 months. The first time I visited, Rolin had a difficult job cut out for him to undo the bad cut I got a couple months earlier from a different barber. Didn't realise how rough the ends of my hair were due to my previous cut. Rolin spent close to an hour working meticulously doing what he does best. Being skeptical, I waited a few weeks to see how it would turn out. I was SO pleased with how my hair grew I saw him again today after 10 weeks. So after two visits I can safely say I have found someone who truly loves and understands cutting men's hair. this is a long overdue review--i've been trusting Rolin for a long time now. in fact, even since i moved to San Francisco, i still make a point of saving haircuts for my monthly trip to New York, just because Rolin is so good! the first few times i came in here, i used Jose--who was also really, really good; in fact the only reason i ended up using Rolin was because one day i was in a bind and Jose was already filled up! Rolin is great because i'm one of those people that doesn't ever really know what to ask for...so being able to just tell Rolin generally what i'm looking for and have him come up with something, has been perfect. he also does really solid beard trims, including a razor shape up. also it's kind of corny, but it's true...Rolin is more than just a barber. i was walking around Flatiron one day, having not seen him in a while, and he actually recognized me and called me out by name to say whattup. he has a ton of clients, and still remembered my face and name after a long time? that's pretty impressive. everybody i've worked with at this shop has been fantastic. 5 for sure. read more

Made my first trip to see Rolin tonight after leaving my hair untouched for 6 months. I walk in, get handed a bourbon and give Rolin the info about my hair: what I was looking for, where my hair was a nightmare to deal with, and we check out some pictures. Rolin goes to work on my mess of hair, cutting just a little bit at a time to make sure it was just the right length. Thank goodness the guy after me cancelled because it took a full hour to get down to the hair cut that turned out incredible. Rolin never tried to rush me out and made sure he was letting me know what was up. I did feel bad for my man Jose who was sweeping up the hair.
