I asked the owner if she felt that price was reasonable for a 10‑minute service, and she responded, 'It's about getting the job done.' I normally pay around that amount for a full wash, blowout, and styling, so this felt extremely overpriced and disappointing. It's unfortunate, because I work in the area and might have become a regular customer, but after this experience, I won't be returning.

It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

This really pissed me off because in the middle of my appointment, I even heard an assistant ask in Mandarin "is she getting a haircut?" and the stylist shook his head. I was really unhappy with my hair that I went to get a hair treatment (for the dry, damaged hair) and toner at a different salon a week later. That stylist even asked "who did your hair?"

Decided to go in twice before passing judgement, just to make sure - but to be completely honest, the first time I was beyond sold. Rolin is by far the best barber I've ever been lucky enough to meet. My hair type is nothing short of a complete pain. I've got tight curls - too tight for any reasonable hair style. Anyone who grew up with a jew fro knows that no matter what you have going for you, the hair is pretty much a write-off. I've been to every type of barber in the city, and paid every price you can pay for a haircut. I've tried giving stylists free reign and I've tried bringing exact pictures. But until Rolin worked on me, I can honestly say I was never once completely satisfied with a haircut. It just seemed that something between the mechanics of my hair and the shape of my head just entirely confused most barbers beyond any reasonable technique and I would always end up with something half way between what I said and a complete blob. The most amazing thing about Rolin's cut is that it's effortless. I've become so used to barbers blowing it that I hardly know what to say when a barber asks what I want. I'm pretty sure when Rolin asked that I coughed up a vague handful of contradictory explanations of a hairstyle that was in no way compatible with my hair type, but somehow Rolin read my mind completely. Not only that, but the second time I came in, I didn't have to say /anything/. He remembered me (from months before) and more importantly, he instantly knew what to do with my hair. I had complete faith in him. My glasses prescription isn't too great (am I giving a good enough picture of myself at this point?) so I can't see a thing when a barber is cutting. With my track record, usually pretty anxiety inducing - but when Rolin is cutting I have complete faith. I trust that he knows exactly what looks good on me. Rolin is a barber with intuitive style and the technique to pull it off. Can't recommend this place enough - especially if you've got a tough hair type. read more

So I was on a train to Brooklyn one night after a long day at the office (I think I was actually about to dose off at one point). An unassuming gentleman sat next to me and we both began to chat about long work days and how getting home at 9pm and waking up at 7am can start to wear a person down over time; although we both acknowledged that it could be worse. I told him that I hadn't even had a chance to get a haircut (I get very self conscious once my beard/hair grow to a certain point) but that I didn't mind because I needed a new barber anyway. This is when he told me that he was a barber and handed me his card; all is said was "ROLIN" and "Barbering By Marcus" (aside from the website and an address). He proceeded to tell me that it wasn't really a barbershop though; that he couldn't really explain it and that I would just have to come try it out. The card was of good stock and well designed so I knew this wouldn't be the type of place I was used to ($20 hole in the walls)...but I didn't throw the card away; I actually went down there about 3 weeks later. Rolin was right; it's more of an experience, and one that I guarantee you've never had at a conventional barbershop. Aside from giving me one of the best haircuts I've had in my life, he also took really great care of my face. I used to have a perpetual problem with blackheads. After seeing Rolin for about 5 sessions or so, they seem to have disappeared forever. His attention to detail is tantamount only to his passion for the craft, which he views as an art form as opposed to a mere trade. If you remember nothing else from this really long post, remember that in most cases you get what you pay for; in Rolin's case, you'll probably get a little more than that. I have to stop typing now so that I can be on time for my 12:30 (he's always booked back to back so it doesn't behoove you to be late). read more

This is my first and last yelp review. ~5 years ago I used to go to a "trendy" barbershop in the West Village. The guys pretended to be Italian and would spend more time giving off "old school" vibes and pretending to be your buddy than cutting hair - it was an expensive joke. I have been coming here for a few years. First with Marcus and now that I have to work longer hours going with Rolin. Marcus runs an incredible shop and is an incredibly talented guy. Rolin is very talented and an amazing professional. He really cares about your haircut - to the point where it is as if he is basically cutting his own hair every time. I get a ridiculous amount of compliments because of the care and attention to detail that Rolin puts into my haircut. I am not kidding - this guy has a strategy from BEFORE the moment you arrive to sit down in your chair for how he is going to get you to look great for the next 6 weeks, and he executes it with skill, attention, experience, and flourishes for the price of basically what you would pay in tips on a weekend night out in NYC. It is not because of the money, it is not because of your personality, it is because he is so dedicated to his work --- he will never allow himself to do a half good job on you. He is truly an amazing and amazingly talented professional. The above also goes for Marcus - I have never sat with Ryon but sure he is great too. This place is a real winner for NYC, cannot speak positively enough about the service I get here. I am not a stickler for detail by nature but yes there is a huge difference between what you get here and what you would get somewhere else. I switched to Barbering by Marcus a year ago, and I get a hair cut from Rolin every 4-6 weeks. From the very first appointment, Rolin has been amazing. All I knew was that "I needed a hair cut," but Rolin's follow-up questions helped me figure out what kind of hair cut I needed, and then he made it happen. I am definitely grateful that at each haircut, he gives me the benefit of his experience without pushing me any one direction. The hair cut is 30 minutes, which is perfect for someone like me with a busy work schedule. Yet somehow, the appointment never feels rushed -- if anything, it's one of the most relaxing parts of your day -- and I've always felt like I had time to talk through the haircut at the beginning of the appointment or make additional requests at the end. (I've never actually made any additional requests, because the cuts have been perfect, but it's nice to have the option nonetheless.) Rolin is personable and professional, and he brings a level of care and attention to detail to each haircut that lets me know I am in good hands. I will not go to another barber for as long as I live in NYC. Rolin is master craftsman who brings a quiet joy to his work, and I would highly recommend Rolin and Barbering by Marcus to anyone looking for a top-notch haircut and an excellent all-around experience. Not a regular Yelp-er, but some establishments/services warrant a review and, in the case of Barbering by Marcus, it's undeniably a good one. The vibe is on point. Cool, classy, modern, upscale - but always friendly, welcoming and without pretension. Of course more important than atmosphere is the service itself, and a haircut at Barbering by Marcus surely won't disappoint. I've only ever gotten my hair cut/beard trimmed by the one and only Rolin, though I have no doubt that the other barbers are just as skilled. That being said, I've been seeing Rolin for just about two years now and don't intend on stopping anytime soon. Rolin is talented, attentive, precise, intuitive and immediately understanding of the look I want - at this point I pretty much just let him do his thing and he consistently nails it. Ultimately Rolin regularly achieves the impossible: he somehow manages to make me look cool. But, if my word isn't enough, take it from my friends, family and coworkers who regularly comment on how great my hair and beard look after a visit with Rolin. The confidence-boost is real. Speaking of real, naturally we have to factor in cost. You can absolutely get a cheaper haircut somewhere else. But that's exactly what you'll get: an obviously cheaper haircut. Do yourself a favor and pay a bit more for a confidence-boost from Rolin that, really, you can't put a price on. read more

Rolin, you are the man! I am so excited with my new look! A million thanks to you!!! I have been to a lot of different barbershop in the past but I finally found my go to place. It is my first time here in this men's salon and I honestly thought that my trip was well worth it. As soon as I walked in, a man immediately welcomed me by the door. I told the front desk I had an appointment with Rolin and he offered to take my coat to hang in a closet. I sat down as I waited for my hair to be washed. The girl who washed my hair was super nice as well and even offered me a drink (by the way the shampoo and conditioner they use on your hair smells amazing!). Then finally Rolin came over and I introduced myself. I showed him a picture of the cut and style that I wanted and he knew it instantly. He really goes into the fine details of your hair and he's got a great sense of humour too. I have never encountered that kind of excellent customer service until now. He did a phenomenal job enhancing my appearance. My confidence level just went back from a 0 to a 10. Great ambiance and super nice people who are very professional. I've been working/living in the NYC area for some time and have had a lot of trouble finding a good barber. My hair is tough to style right, and to find someone that was good, patient and understanding while also being personable was something that eluded me for nearly 4 years. I found Barbering by Marcus on Yelp and saw Rolin had great reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Rolin, simply put, is the man. Great barber, even better guy. Rolin is consistent, explains reasoning for why I should stick to something or try something new, and always does what he can to make sure I'm happy. Rolin uses top of the line products and equipment, making the price 100% worth it. Rolin also understands that the little things go a long way...he always asks how I'm doing, how my fiancee is doing etc, and is refreshingly genuine about it. We always talk throughout the haircut, so it's very relaxed and comfortable throughout Nearly a year later and no chance I'm going to anyone else. Can't say enough good things about this operation. Marcus has truly mastered the art of establishing a place you can go to get the "barber experience" and still get your hair styled with trends you would expect from NYC. I have been going there every 3 weeks for 4 years and if I wasn't moving out of the city I would be going there for the next 40 years. Everyone at the shop is extremely friendly and professional. Ryon has mastered my hair style and it is truly refreshing to show up, sit in the chair without saying a word and let him do his thing without a gut wrenching apprehensiveness of "how is it gonna turn out this time?" Every single cut he does is with absolute precision and he truly takes pride in his work. More importantly than his hair cutting skill is how great of a person he is. He has become a great friend! If you're looking for a Royal experience, from precise artists, you'll come here. I've never given a business 5 stars; but Marcus Bs deserves it. I'm an androgynous chick, who's particular about everything from my tailor to my socks. However, I understand not everyone is welcome to it. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable and I don't want to be uncomfortable. So when I walked into Marcus Bs, after reading other reviews of barbers in the area not being friendly to women in their shop - I headed to the receptionist and asked if they take women. She pointed me to a fabulous diva stylist who was shocked by my ask, she replied "we take all kinds of people here, come with us." She set me up with Ryon. This was my second hair cut in NYC, since moving here in Oct. Shops vibe is strong, great music, outrageously clean, massage chairs, and the best undercut + fade I've ever received. I was looking for a place around the Flatiron that could trim my beard as well as give a good haircut to a guy with thinning hair (not as easy to do as it might seem!) I read all the good reviews for Barbering by Marcus and gave it a try. I was able to book an appointment with Ronin and was so pleased how it all worked out. Their on-line reservation system is very user friendly. The shop is very stylish. The entire operation there is very professional and comfortable. (The massage chair was a real surprise!) Like other reviewers have commented, the customer service is really excellent. Most of all, Ronin took excellent care of me. He listened to what I asked for and made it happen. This may the best haircut I have gotten in decades. He is a true professional who justifiably prides himself on his work. Yes, the prices were a little on the high side, but you get what you pay for. This place is awesome. Everyone is nice and accommodating even if they are not your baber! Rolin is incredible, I can't say it enough. I will never go to anyone else again period. I have been to other "top shops" in NYC that have butchered my hair, they take what you want and mindlessly cut it paying no attention to if goes with your headshape, hair texture, etc. What makes Rolin brilliant is that we will take what you want and the end goal and work with your hair to get it to the look you want. He will talk to you as he is cutting explaining what he is doing and why he is doing it that way. I have been going to Rolin for over a year and in that time I have changed my hairstyle quite a number of times. The man can do it all! Fades, tapers, undercuts, to actually being skilled with a scissor and physically cutting your hair which is where most barbers suck. Rolin is the real deal! read more

I have seen Rolin twice now over 3 months. The first time I visited, Rolin had a difficult job cut out for him to undo the bad cut I got a couple months earlier from a different barber. Didn't realise how rough the ends of my hair were due to my previous cut. Rolin spent close to an hour working meticulously doing what he does best. Being skeptical, I waited a few weeks to see how it would turn out. I was SO pleased with how my hair grew I saw him again today after 10 weeks. So after two visits I can safely say I have found someone who truly loves and understands cutting men's hair. Believe me if you are tired of getting the same generic "supercut" experience and are looking to walk tall with a cut and style worthy of the big apple (for a very reasonable price!), go see Rolin. Owing to a few disasters and my loyalty to my then current Barbers, I spent the first few years of living in NYC avoiding going to the Barbers and would wait until I went back home to England to get a cut. I started to travel less however and had to take the plunge. I came across Barbering By Marcus after looking for great places with good reviews. This places provides a great overall experience. Everyone is so friendly and the atmosphere is great. From the massage at the start to the hot towel at the end and of course the cut - everything is perfect. I use both Rolin and Ryon (I do things last minute based on my schedule so it depends on availability). Both are amazing and I have never had a bad haircut and always leave feeling great. One of the best places to get a haircut in Manhattan period. While not a barbershop in a traditional sense, I came in 2 months after shaving my head, and after a shampoo and with little direction Marcus did an amazing job giving me a haircut . "Detailed-Oriented" is the best way to describe him. You won't leave with a hair out of place (Just good luck trying to style it that perfect the next day). I work for a certain airline, and i would be lieing if i said I didn't fly to New York occasionally just to get a haircut. I started going to Rolin for beard trims. He does a meticulous job and his attention to detail is amazing. He gives you exactly what you ask for and is able to interject his own ideas or opinion if needed. I was so impressed with his skills that I decided to get my hair cut by him. I was not disappointed! He gave me the best haircut I have ever had. Rolin is a master and you can relax in his chair and know that you are going to look much better than when you originally came in. I've been coming to Barbering by Marcus for over a year and have greatly enjoyed the service provided by their staff. Making an appointment online is very convenient but I'd advise to do so a few days in advance if you have a preferred time as slots fill quickly. Rolin does an excellent job in cutting and styling my hair the way that I like it. I can definitely say that I trust him to do good by me and give me a great look. His banter is a nice personal touch that makes me feel like I'm not just another person filling the barber's chair. The complimentary drink is great touch especially after a long day at work and the atmosphere is very chill. Highly recommend my friends to go here if they want a great cut or shave! read more

This is my 1st Yelp review, but felt this was a great opportunity to share my experience with my barber, Rolin, at Barbering By Marcus. Going to a new barber is definitely a leap of faith, but Rolin's confidence made my experience very easy from day one. He sized me up and almost immediately knew what I was looking for with my haircut. He shared with me how we can improve upon my previous haircut and how it will continue to take shape as I continue to return. I've had about 4-5 haircuts with Rolin and we've already started to talk about potential new variations of my current haircut. He's an easy going guy and pleasure to see every 4-5 weeks. I can't see myself changing barbers anytime soon. Worth every penny! read more

I've been coming to Rolin every month for almost two years now. Having moved to NYC in mid 2016, I had some really poor experiences in Manhattan, as I searched for a go to barber. After I got home from my first appointment with Rolin, my wife said it was the best haircut I've ever had. How could you go anywhere else after that.... Rolin has a fantastic attention to detail, is very personable and takes your feedback/thoughts on previous cuts into consideration as your relationship develops. The quality of his work is of the highest level has remained so throughout the past two years. This year, however, I decided to try my luck--could there be a good barber in the largest city in America? Apparently there is, and his name is Sam at Fellow Barber. I went to Sam on accident, technically; I had made an appointment with a barber who, I was later told, was at a different location on my scheduled day. After asking the receptionist, whose name I regrettably did not get, who was a good choice, he recommended Sam. I get a fairly traditional haircut: scissors-and-comb all over, long on top and short on the sides, no fade or anything like that. In a world of electric trimmers and GreatClips, a barber who knows how to work the shears is an unfortunate rarity. I was pleased to find that Sam is one of those rare few. He acknowledged the multiple cowlicks in my hair, and clearly took his time. He didn't seem to make a single cut that was not considered, and even then went back twice to make sure that everything was even and squared away. The meditative experience was completed with a straight razor shave on the back of the neck--the only real way to finish a trip to the barber (short of a full face shave, another pandemic casualty). Until I have reason to change, I have made Sam my go-to barber for whenever I'm in the city. If you care at all about how your hair looks, I suggest that you do likewise--and tip well!
