I went there for dinner last night for the first time and was deliciously impressed! Upon entering- you are transported into a very chic and artsy dining room with lots of conversation and romantic lighting. We glazed over the menu and picked 5 things! For our appetizers we had the west coast oysters and the bone marrow. The oysters were fresh and salty. The bone marrow was scrumptious! It was loaded with marrow and the side of bacon jam with baguette was an excellent accompaniment. My friend had the beef tartare as an entree and I got the wild mushroom risotto. The beef tartare was fresh and well seasoned. My risotto was cooked very nicely- fluffy with plenty of cream and cheese. For dessert we got crème brûlée and it was made just perfect! Laurie is a great waiter, engage with her. The mussels are excellent here. The Nicoise is excellent, a bit smaller than other places but the seared tuna is far more tender than at competitors. Do you hear me French Meadow? Carrot cake slice is enough for 2-3, very good quality. Also, the Risotto is unique, much less sticky and milder with the taste of peas and pesto coming through. Food was okay. My food came out cold, the yogurt parfait hugely lacked any granola or fruit! Was missing the honey, I'm not a huge fan of plain Greek yogurt. It definitely needs honey. Lattes were small and pricey. $77 later for eggs, sourdough bread (was supposed to be toasted but came out as bread) hashbrowns, waffle, and a yogurt parfait, along with 3 lattes and a cocktail. Barbette is such an "old reliable" in my book. Their veggie hash is seriously to die for. I cannot get enough of their onion broth, and the veggies change as the seasons do. Expressing martinis from barbette are my favorite!!! Their sidewalk patio is super cute. Parking in the lot or on the street. Also love their brunch. They often have great happy hour deals too! The art work on the walls varies and brings a lot to look at while you're there. Service can be slow at times, but it's worth the wait. We sat on the patio on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. Food was delicious, we were really happy with our entrees. We especially liked the frites & I thoroughly enjoyed my smoked salmon crepe- would highly recommend ordering for a savory flavor blast, complimented by a fresh salad. Barbette is a lovely French bistro that is appealing in all the ways. The combination of their French-inspired menu + warm interior + location in Uptown make for a lovely place to drop in casually, or to have a romantic date night. Takeout and delivery is available too! I've been here during the day to grab a burger and also for late-night happy hour for bites and sips. You can't go wrong with a "Royale" cheeseburger on their daily brunch menu... especially when the cheese is a thick slice of French comte and the burger is Midwest Limousin beef. Pro tip: sub fries with saffron aioli! I also love coming here for late night bites like oysters, pommes frites, and cheese + meat plates. Barbette was featuring an enticing menu for restaurant week and I just had to give it a try. For a start we had the Beet dish that was a Beet dip that servers with a varied of items to dip. It was fantastic. I loved the pickled root vegetables and the homemade chips. For the main course my group tried the salmon and the roasted chicken. The salmon was amazing and served with the most flavorful and crispy skin. I ate every bite! The salmon dish overall was just a bit on the dry side as it was served with Brussels sprouts and roasted sweet potato. I wish it had more sauce. The roast chick was moist and everything on the plate was amazing including the sauce, veggies, and mashed potatoes. My sister said it was the best chicken she ever had. Dessert for us included the Creme Brûlée, Carrot Cake, and chocolate torte. The carrot cake was the best and I would get it again. The chocolate torte was a little to rich and bitter for me. Staff and service was good, although I didn't like how they didn't ask or offer to split the check before bringing us the entire bill. I also didn't really like how the waiter commented on how much we ate by saying something along the lines of "wow you must have been hungry". Barbette has become a favorite "go to" place for us. We love the mussels. It was a new treat for us and they showed us how delicious they were. On top of that they have really great bloody Mary's. They aren't over done with too much stuff. They are just perfect. The Benedict's are very good. We hosted a brunch in their private party space and it worked out so well. Staff is very attentive. We stopped in here today on recommendation from a friend. Cute place with a nice French-Like menu. I had a cappuccino and the turkey sandwich and my husband had an espresso and croque monsieur. Both of us upgraded to the fries. The food was decent enough (actually the fries were quite good) but the service is definitely lacking. I ordered my turkey sandwich without the sprouts as they make me sick when I eat them. The sandwich came with sprouts. Ok. Mistakes happen. However the problem here is they NEVER came back to see if our food was ok or check on us. I ended up pulling as many of the sprouts off as I could and ate the sandwich. I must have missed some because I did get sick. Finally, after 25 minutes we were given our bill but still never was asked if everything was ok if we needed anything else. Will we be back? Eh, probably not. I could go elsewhere with food that is just as good without having to pick stuff off my food and where the service is actually decent. read more

Ate here for a work lunch. Driven by a number of times and didn't realize it was here. Service was okay - a bit indifferent but present enough. One thing I wish restaurants would do is if you had an uncommon menu item, throw down a little explanation. I get that I am not the most cultured person in the world, but I eat out with vendors and clients a lot, so I've been around. When I see stuff on the menu that I'm just expected to know what it is, it makes me feel dumb, and I don't think that is a vibe the restaurant wants. What is mornay? One person at the table described that "it is like a mayonnaise". The other said it is like hollandaise. Those are pretty different. And it is on all the sandwiches. (I ended up Googling it. Its a milk/egg/cheese sauce.) ANYWAY, I ended up with the one sandwich that did not have it, the Roasted Turkey, which was pretty good. Had fries for the table which were average. Barbette is a cozy and intimate French restaurant off Lake Street. I came in for a late dinner and ordered the Seared Scallops appetizer and cup of soup. The soup of the day was creamy potatoes and bacon. The scallops could have been milder on the salt but it was a good combination with the corn, tomato, and onion mix it came with. I feel like the dish (3 scallops) could have benefited with more, or a thicker, more savory, sauce. The cup of soup was pretty small, about 2/3 the size of a regular mug. It came out piping hot and I had to air it out before scarfing it down to rush and leave the restaurant to run back to my hotel to catch the last two innings of game 7 of the World Series. (All that info to say the restaurant does NOT have a television). The $5 house wines on the Yelp check-in deal and HH are boxed wine. Can't comment on taste because I didn't try. I have been several times to this sweet bistro and it is definitely worth revisiting. On my most recent visit, I loved the tartare and charcuterie, which I shared with a girlfriend along with a glass of rose. The food is always tasty. I wish the prices were a little lower, but I appreciate the good food they serve and I don't think they are way off the mark. The only downside for me was that we were seated in a corner spot along the wall and the banquette seat was excruciating! My butt was really unhappy by the time we left after some much-needed catch up time. Next time, maybe I will make a point to avoid this and sit elsewhere. During the nice seasons, there is seating on the sidewalk outside and it is great for seeing cute dogs parked up and people watching. We went without a reservation on a Thursday night and didn't have trouble getting a seat indoors but the outdoors was full-up (end of August - not surprising!). read more

Had lunch a few months ago at Barbette. Perhaps it was brunch on a week day and thus the menu did not have many authentic French dishes that I would typically find and expect such as the lack of escargot or foie gras on their appetizers/entrée. They serve brunch between 8am and 4pm with happy hour from 2pm to 5pm. You'd expect to find mostly sandwiches and salads for their brunch entrée selections and a semi fusion of American-French cuisine on their menu. I ordered their happy hour special "Bottle of Bubbly" which comprised of the 49M Cremant de Loire Brut NV champagne & Dozen Daily Fresh Oysters for $38+++. While I actually really only wanted the dozen of oysters as it was $3++ a piece, the happy hour special turned out to be technically cheaper or just $2 more with a bottle of champagne compared to simply ordering a dozen of oysters at $36++. The staff was also really kind to acede to my request and allow me to take the bubbly to go instead of having it there as I was driving and was going back to work. As I left hurriedly after my quick lunch and totally forgot to take my credit card after signing the bill, they were kind to keep my card at the cashier counter but it wasn't until after work that I realized and was relieved when I returned later to retrieve it. read more

I would likely give this space 3 1/2 stars....it's between okay and good. My spouse liked it more than I did. We ate outdoors and while the server was pleasant enough, she was a bit scattered and not on-her-game. For example, she came to take our order but had only brought the drink menu and not the food menu and hadn't realized it (despite going over the specials with us). The steak frites (new york strip) was fine but a bit fatty. At over $40 I expected more. As a matter of fact, what I found the most hard to swallow was the final price tag for two of us, which hit over $100; we hadn't been drinking. We liked the atmosphere and the appetizers were amazing! However, both of our entrees were not great. My husband had the steak and it was a cut of beef that would definitely be better in a stew. Small things like "add grilled chicken" ends up being chicken thighs just seemed worth clarifying. On an additional note, they were wonderful in terms of COVID-19 safety protocols so we very much appreciated that. In the end we might return, but only for appetizers and a quick cocktail. read more

Ah Barbette, I really wanted to love you, but we never got past like. We stopped in for an early dinner/late lunch and ordered the Niçoise salad with smoked salmon and the Ferndale turkey sandwich. The salad was good but underwhelming. It's a deconstructed salad so every bite is unique as you choose what to stab your fork into each time, which keeps it from getting boring and lets the ingredients be the star. Unfortunately none of the ingredients were especially flavorful. The purple potatoes really are there for decoration as they add nothing in the flavor department. The anchovy added a saltiness that was nice, but really nothing else stands out to me. The sandwich again was good but not great. The bread was perfectly toasted and all the ingredients blend well together, but it was just a good turkey sandwich. After reading great things on Yelp, we decided to get the carrot cake to go and were pretty disappointed there. It has a very thick, moist, kind of gelatinous texture. The frosting was good, but the texture didn't do it for us. We loved the relaxed, upscale cafe feel of the place and would like to give their dinner menu a shot sometime, but the first visit was just ok. read more

I stumbled upon this place today and it is a gem. I visit Minniapolis often, lately, and I'm totally into the food scene in this city. Barbette's was a terrific experience. I chose East coast oysters, a Niçoise salad and had the flourless chocolate cake for desert. The oysters were fresh in their own liquor and the mignonette was tangy and fresh. I added horseradish for some additional zing. I did not have fish with the salad (except the delicious anchovies that come with the salad), but ordered an extra egg for protein and it was delicious. Perfect jammy eggs and freshly perfect green beans, al dente purple fingerling potatoes and a zingy vinaigrette. Of course the flourless chocolate cake was perfect too. So, I loved it all. This looks like a neighborhood favorite with lots of conversation between patrons and staff. We think it will now be one of our favorites too... This is a lovely, cozy, colorful restaurant with great service and really delicious food. We didn't have reservations when showing up around 7pm on a Friday, but we were given a choice of sitting at the ample bar space - there is both a low bar somewhat like a table and a high bar - both traditional and more table-like. The service from the bartender was outstanding - prompt, informed, and he checked in on us frequently. We ordered the avocado salad and burrata cheese appetizers - both great. Then enjoyed the wild mushroom risotto and the halibut on special. Everything about both dishes was top notch - flavorful, balanced, nicely seasoned but letting the simple flavors come through. Saturday at 3:45PM. Ignored immediately as I walked in. Five workers just doing their thing. 5 tables out of 20 were full. Keep in mind this is counter service now. I requested a side area for shade and was told that since I did not have a reservation I could not sit there (there were so many tables available and it was before the dinner "rush," which doesn't exist anymore). I was told I had to sit in the back or the front (blazing sun, cars whizzing past, parking lot view and people walking right next to you), which are really undesirable and not safe. I told the lady at the front I would check the back to see if it was available- which is her job, not mine. I finally settled in the back and ate as quickly as possible as I'm not a fan of eating in a parking lot. A double espresso, Salmon Nicious and 20% tip came to ~$26. For counter and sub-par service I was quite shocked. Maybe my standards are too high for this restaurant but for real... if there are tables available in an area I requested, even without a reservation and was told it was "policy" that I could not sit there because of a lack of reservation- why not make me one! I'm right there! A paying customer today is like gold to restaurants who are suffering. I sure as heck won't ever sit at this restaurant again and intend. As I left, the side area in which I requested was empty. I was so disappointed. I went in an explained that I was not happy and that I would not bring friends or family to the restaurant, in which I did from time to time. The staff got defensive and told me I can never eat at the restaurant again. What psychological power-trip BS is going on at this place.
