I can't believe I haven't reviewed St. Gen's yet! It's definitely a splurge, but usually worth it. I usually get the Parisian gnocchi, and my partner has tried a number of items from the menu and generally enjoyed them all. They have an extensive wine collection, but I've enjoyed the mocktail they make the past few times I've gone. The olive oil cake is a must try - absolutely mouthwatering. I like the bistro feel and love sitting outside when the weather is nice. I've always had wonderful servers as well. I will say, the preparation of the Parisian gnocchi has changed, and I do prefer the previous preparation (though there may be some seasonal specifics for the change). read more

We enjoy restaurant week and do our best to pick out new places. The menu and the location of this restaurant appealed to us. Charming quaint but slightly upscale restaurant on the corner of 50th and Bryant. Next door is a local store that is worth checking out Around the corner is another restaurant/bar that looks like it would be worth a try. Back to our experience. Very good all the way around. For example one of the starters which I tried was parsnip soup. There was a pasta selection for the main entrée, which was very good. We would highly recommend anyone in the south Minneapolis or nearby suburbs check this out If we lived in the south Minneapolis neighborhood it would be in our regular restaurant rotation. read more

There was a change of brunch plans and we ended up going to Saint Genevieve's for brunch. I was worried about parking the most because the Google app mentioned limited parking in the area but at around 12:30, there were several spots available right next to the restaurant. Reservations were very easy to make and manage using the Tock app. I have not been here in a long time and the last time was for dinner several years ago. I could smell the aromas of fresh cooking as I walked into the door. I took a few minutes to Glance around and admire all the mosaic tile and wooden floor. The old mirrors and the beautiful tables and chairs through. As well as the layout of the bar and the way that the establishment is laid out with so many windows. The combination of high ceilings and windows brings in ample natural light and brightens up the place. Our server was Sophie who told us about the menu items and the various beverage items and we decided to try their seasonal mulled wine spritzer. This vibrant purple concoction with an orange peel for garnish on ice was refreshing and very good. It paired well with everything I had to eat. We were not sure what to eat so we decided to just order a few items and share them and just chat and enjoy. Our table was small so Sophie was going to bring them out in waves. While we were waiting my friend had a coffee and I had an espresso. Her coffee was fine but my espresso was very bitter most likely due to the grind being way too fine or over extraction from my experience making it at home in my espresso maker. Other than that the first items that came out were the smoked lox and the shakshouka. I have had smoked lox in many locations and it's always like some nasty pickled smoky mystery meat. I have had it at some places where it's not a bright color and more muted as if it was in a jar or air-tight container. The lox Here tasted very fresh and was not too vinegary or overly smokey or salty. It did not leave that fishy aftertaste in your mouth and as you chewed it up the luscious fish melted like butter and tasted like a good piece of sashimi-grade salmon. This blended in with the capers along with a touch of the herb cream cheese it was divine. The shakshouka well I was telling my friend that I have not had a good shakshouka in the United States ever. The last good shakshouka I had was in Ramot Naftali Israel and Tel Aviv Israel. Since then I have been to so many places claiming they make a great shakshouka and how it is just like back in Israel and this and that and you taste it and it's like omg this is dreadful. It's like canned tomato paste with oil, overcooked egg, salt, and mystery spices. This shakshouka is very similar but the stuff was more thinly cut I rate this the best I have tasted in the US so far. Disclaimer I don't go seeking out shakshouka but I sometimes try it when I see it at a nice reputable restaurant or a Middle Eastern restaurant. While eating our lox and shakshouka we met an amazing older couple who I could tell by speaking to them were foodies also. They seemed to be on the next level. I write reviews for fun and to share but they seemed on a way more professional level and it was such an honor speaking to them. I opened up my notes as they gave me some tips on locations where we should go check out and I am making those a priority. As well as the great conversation with them. The fun part about what I like about the food and not what I like about the food is also the experience I have at a place and this couple made our day we hope we run into them again down the road and will never forget them. Next came out the Baccon. Their bacon was thick and not overly cooked where you would need to see the dentist if you bit into it. The bacon slices were also all uniformly matched and dress right dress. The seasoning on it was perfect and was not salty like the Dead Sea. The bacon went really well with the omelet that came next. The omelet was wrapped to perfection and cut incredibly smooth. It was stuff with all types of goodness and one bite into it revealed a nice buttery flavor that was so creamy. This is one of the best omelets I have had in a while and we have already ordered it but the couple we were speaking to recommended the omelet and I can see why. The only was very dense on the inside but very fluffy on the outside. You can get 4 good-sized sizes sharable tasting pieces from one omelet if you want to just do what we did and just be adventurous. So by this time, we had had several drinks and my friend switched from spritzers to corpse revivers and brunch was over and I was being slow as always and the Quiche was still left. The Quiche looked like a giant fancy New York cheesecake honestly. It was beautifully crafted and light and fluffy and as I pulled over the final plate to try the last thing I took my fork and like a samurai with a quick downward motion I cut the Quiche. read more

Went to this little neighborhood gem on a whim on a Friday evening for dinner. A quaint place you could likely miss if you weren't looking for it. The staff was friendly and understood their menu. Our server recommended dishes and hit it out of the park. We went with the 3-course dinner, priced reasonably at $55. For the first course we went with the Beef Tartare amd Tomato Tarte Tarin. The tarin was a unique presentation and almost felt like a dessert. The tartare was one of the best we have had. Perfect consistency and went really well with the toasted bread it came with. Steak au Poivre and the Casoulet were the main entrees we chose. The steak was cooked perfectly with an excellent demi glaze and the green peppercorns had a perfect crunch and tanginess. The cassoulet was well balanced and the crispy fried leg was a nice addition to the dish. We also had the Pomme Frites as a supplement which worked really well with the steak and came with a bernaise aioli that was very tasty. We ended the dinner with Pear Financier and the Panna Cotta. Both a perfect end to the meal. We had a few drinks with dinner and the cocktails did not disappoint. I've lived in the neighborhood for about 8 years and finally made it to St. Genevieve. I'm just not an Oyster person, but the Bacon Jam Burger was amazing!!! It's a pretty rich and unique burger and pairs nicely with a good beer. Their fries are perfect as well. Now on the to the Fleur De Sang cocktail. Their bartender invented this drink and it's a nice blend of mezcal and a float of red wine. Next time you're there make sure you order one. read more

If you're looking for a quick bite, not the place for you but if you have time to spare and would like to enjoy good French cooking with friends and loved ones, then this is the place for you. This evening we brought our parents to St. Genevieve as part of their Christmas present and was recommended by friends. We had recently spent time in France a few weeks ago and wanted to share a French dining experience with our parents. We were very disappointed with the meal and the experience. It started by being seated near the front glass doors and windows, which had cold air blowing on us, unpleasant during winter and for our elderly parents. Our parents kept their coats on, as did several others at tables near us, and when we commented and asked if there was anything that could be done the wait staff ignored it. The service felt similar to what you'd expect at a local bar and grill. We had to ask for our cheese plate starter three times before it arrived. The side dishes, which were to be shared with our entrees, arrived before the cheese plate, and the small table was so crowded with plates leaving little room for glasses or movement. The $11 beer from a bottle, which I know costs $10.99 for a six-pack, was just set on the table. I poured the beer myself, asked the waiter to take the bottle and he seemed confused but took it reluctantly. The music was also loud, causing conversation in the room to be so loud that I couldn't hear my mother-in-law across the table from me. We had to ask for silverware when the entrees arrived because after the starter plates were removed, we only had steak knives. The wait staff would often reach across the table to take plates or dishes, putting their arms in front of our faces as we were having conversation and we'd have to move to look around them, very different from service by well-trained wait staff. The food was ok, but not worth the high prices. The cauliflower side was made with some kind of cheese that smelled and tasted sour, like it had passed its expiration date, plus half of the "brussel sprouts" were actually broccoli florets. The cheese starter was composed of two thin slices of white cheddar, one slice of Brie, a teaspoon of jam, two thin slices of pickled pear, a piece of bread, and two crackers, for $22.00. Cheese and bread are very important in France and often served with multiple kinds cheese with baguettes for 4 people to have enough to eat. The NY strip steak was good, but not worth over $60 when served with a single tablespoon of mashed potatoes and creamy overcooked spinach. The mushroom risotto was on par with cream of mushroom soup, over-cooked minute rice with a few slices of small mushrooms. The final bill was over $350.00, which included dinner for four people, one drink apiece, one starter, and no dessert. This restaurant was nothing like the experiences we had in France last month, which cost half the price. The service, quality of food, dining experience, and cost made this evening at St. Genevieve a one-time dining experience for our family and we would not recommend it to anyone. read more

Closer to a 4.5 in terms of rating but the vibe makes up for it. This is a very cozy place for brunch because of its location on a weekend morning! Sitting outside on a morning in the summer makes it even better. I am also just a huge fan of the restaurant's name, so part of me maybe a bit subjective on how much I like this place. However, I do have to be realistic about its food and the aspects that matter the most. The food is not cheap, especially for the portion given when each entrée is $18 or $19, but I think the taste makes it relatively worth it. They have the quiche du jour and the omelette du jour, which basically mean that they can vary from day to day, and I have had various kinds at different times and they have always tasted good. Two days ago their omelette contained scallops and gruyere cheese and the egg texture was very soft as the scallop flavor seeped into the eggs giving the egg another dimension of flavors. The dish got both flavor and texture without a doubt. The shakshouka was pretty good, although I will say for this one the portion really didn't match the price because shakshouka is a very easily made northern African / Middle Eastern breakfast dish that I have had elsewhere for $10-15 with much larger portions. The wild mushroom & brie crêpe also had really soft texture, meaning the scrambled eggs and the mushroom were really well made. I also thoroughly enjoyed the beignets as they were very freshly made with the perfect amount of sweetness! Although I have to say that I have attached two photos of beignets from August 2022 and two days ago, respectively, and the beignets from two days ago looked and tasted better. A good amount of house-made milk bread was given to us two days ago, but only three sausages were given to my friend and me back in August 2022 as the photo has shown, and the latest menu had the bread cost $5 while the sausages $10, so yeah... Slightly beyond my comprehension. Service was pretty good! Our server always had a smile and was very attentive to our needs and checked in at the exact right moments, so I appreciated it. They also made sure that I had sparkling water while my partner had still water. Overall if people ask me some of the best brunch restaurants in the Twin Cities, then I will definitely mention St. Genevieve, but I also will give a disclaimer on the price that may disappoint some when they see the food portion. Went with a group while visiting family in town. Small plates were fine, but entrees were bad. Most of our food was undercooked. The Parisian gnocchi was probably the single worst food item I have had at any real restaurant. It came out room temperature and without any flavor or sauce. This was an exceptional dining experience. The vegetarian items were fabulous. The space itself is beautiful: light and bright, with a classic feel. The service was wonderful as well. The food and wine? Stand-outs. If you're in the mood for spring in a plate, you simply must come in. We started with the baked ricotta. It was absolutely gorgeous: meltingly creamy, with freshness from the lemon. It paired perfectly with the char of the bread. Next up was the spring pea salad, which featured pea shoots, peas, and asparagus paired with yuzu vinaigrette and sesame. The varying textures of the vegetables enveloped by the silky dressing were ad much a treat as the perfectly blended flavors. (If you haven't met shiso and yuzu yet, this is a perfect opportunity to do so.) For my main, I got the gnocchi. Friends, this is exactly what gnocchi should be but rarely is: light and beautiful (it almost dissolves in your mouth), a hint of toastiness, and the perfect foil for its toppings. In this case, that meant fresh-as-a-new-spring-day pistou, truffle, and airy Parmesan. This may have ruined me for any future gnocchi, but it was so good that I don't mind. Dessert for me was the sticky toffee pudding. My friend got the chocolate tart. This date gâteau was so good--the chocolate ganache (inside the gateau) was a pleasant foil to the sweet--but not too sweet--cake and sauce, and the chantilly added a pleasing creaminess. Yikes! Where to begin? ... We came for restaurant week. They ignored us for over half an hour before asking for our drink orders, even thought the restaurant was more than half empty. Then they forgot to put in our appetizer orders. (We kept waiting! We were getting so hungry...) Then they brought the wrong dishes for our second courses. We had to remind them multiple times that this had happened. Eventually they brought the food we'd ordered, but (and at this point we were pretty unsurprised when) they totally forgot about our entrees!!! Then they brought us the bill and were confused when we asked if we could have our entrees first. Of course they had forgotten our entrees. (No wonder the steak was basically raw!) They also do the thing of charging an automatic 15% wellness fee that does not go the server, so you are asked (multiple times, if your bill arrives ahead of your food) to tip on top of the wellness fee, in proportion to the already steep prices. The food was fine but nothing special. We might have liked to order dessert, but the kitchen closed before they remembered our entrees (again, no wonder the steak was raw!), so no chance of dessert. I visited this restaurant years ago and had the same concerns and review. The atmosphere is elegant and uniquely French with perfect lighting, but the food is marginal. Interestingly I had originally commented that we were served 2 tiny carrots as a shared appetizer so I thought this time it had to be better, but instead we were served about 1 oz of carrot shavings as an appetizer about the size of a small egg- this was ostensibly a shareable appetizer! We opted to sit on the patio at Saint Genevieve, this evening, which is two tables in front of this restaurant on the side walk in a bustling nice neighbourhood. Their standing heater kept us from getting Spring Frost bite (50's..:). It started with Octopus and Langoustines (so small and minimal of meat, that we needed reading glasses to eat..:) But, reminded us of the days of Cali. cuisine with its small and pretty portions. The Entrees of Roasted Lamb Loin and Mushroom Tagliatelle, both perfectly cooked and delicious...the earthy flavours were appreciated. Our anniversary deserts of Salted Vanilla Pot de Creme and Caramel Opera Cake were light and nicely sweetened. This dining experience though nice at times, seemed somewhat staged and pretentious. Service was friendly & spot on, but felt unrelaxed. We would be hard pressed to return. Yeah I'm ready to feel now. This little cafe transported me right back to my study abroad days in France with its classic "Parisian" decor and style. I visited for restaurant week and tried their 3 course prix fixe. I ordered the "duck rillette" for the appetizer and it was little pieces of duck salad on a baguette. The flavors were good but I did find several inedible duck bones in the duck salad. The steak au poivre was delicious and perfectly done. I really enjoyed the sauce that came with it! For dessert I had the chocolate terrine, which was very decadent and rich with dark chocolate, cream, and mint. Overall the flavors of the meal were well balanced and interesting- but I left still feeling hungry as the portions were very small. It was also a very expensive meal for what we had. They add a 20% service charge to the bill which is nice because the tip is included. For exceptional service you can tip extra and it's always appreciated! read more

We ate here Saturday, Nov. 16. The entrees of Arctic char & duck were good. My husband particularly liked his Arctic Char. The cheese plate, while tasty, seemed overpriced at $18, with only 1 small wedge of Brie, crackers & an inch square honey comb. The main issue though was the slow service, most likely not due to our server. We sat down at a little after 7:00 PM & did not receive our entrees until after 8:30 PM. I had dinner last night at St Genevieve and thought it was time to update my review. I still believe that St Genevieve is one of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities. They do a nice job of replicating a neighborhood French bistro. The ambiance is perfect with limited seating, a large bar, subdued lighting and an informal atmosphere. My wife and I had dinner with friends and had a fantastic evening. Dinner is now prix fixe with some ala carte options. There were four choices each for starters, main course, and desert. I prefer to start a meal with a glass of crisp, sparkling wine and St Genevieve has several options by the glass which is uncommon around here where if sparkling wine is offered by the glass it is usually a mediocre Prosecco. I had a nice sparkling Vouvray which is one of my favorites. We all had the mussels for a starter along with an order of their excellent frites. The best part of mussels is the broth and this broth was very good with a hint of licorice from the Pernod. They provided us with spoons so we could get every drop. I had the roasted quail. I am from Texas and have hunted and eaten a lot of quail. They can be very good but like many game birds they can be tricky to prepare as the meat of even farm raised birds can be very dry unless the chef knows what she or he is doing. I took a chance and found the quail was excellent. One other person had the quail and the other two had the mushroom risotto and the sable fish. Everyone was happy with their choices. The deserts were outstanding. My wife who cannot resist chocolate had the budino (a sort of chocolate pudding), another member of our group had the raspberry meringue, and two of us had the pistachio cake which was superb. Our server, Benjamin, did an outstanding job. They add a 21% service fee and they make it very clear that a substantial part of this goes to the staff which is more than fair. An extra gratuity is optional but given the quality of the meal and service it is certainly appreciated. I highly recommend St Genevieve and plan on returning more frequently. read more

Absolutely exquisite food! Just had a date night this weekend, to take advantage of the summer menu. Savoured every morsel ... one of the very best meals I have had in some time. We ordered the beet salad and tomato panisse to start. The presentation was exceptional: beets styled as a beet tartare, with a tangy herb dressing; panisse was a creamy cloud with the season's first tomatoes and something creamy. Entree was the trout, expertly prepared and the most light, pillowy truffle dumplings. I planned ahead, skipped lunch, and so we tucked into dessert: a savory chocolate crème brûlée with rosemary that was orgasmic, and a deconstructed strawberries 'n' cream lightly flavored with lavender that convinced me to trade half my dessert. Oh, and don't forget the drinks: scrumptious, unusual cocktails, and the Gavoty rosé (beautiful nose, nice crisp tang). I travel frequently to France and honestly, if I had this meal there, I would be raving about it. I've eaten at St. Genevieve before but this is far and away the best meal I've had there. read more

So torn on this one: Good first: the atmosphere is neat. Dark wood, stuffed floor, Paris style tables. The staff is pretty nice and super accommodating. The food is delicious. We had gnocchi and truffle fries and you can tell the cooks know what they are doing. The gnocchi was so well presented and melted on my tongue. Bad: the portions are so super small and expensive The Gnocchi has 10 mini pieces and cost $22. My wife eats like a Burt and even she was a big taken back. The fries were good, but actually pretty basic and I had to look for flavor in them. Again the portion was very small (presented in a cone) and was gone before the waiter even left the table. We arrived and the ambiance is casual with a high quality service. It was reminiscent of an old speakeasy. The server explained the three course meal and ensured I could order Ala carte. The oyster appetizer arrived with heavenly mignonette ( which smelled like the red onion vinegar we sell at Oil & Vinegar). I ordered pork belly appetizer, which was tender with a apple chutney and radish on top.The other ordered the beet salad, which had an abundance of sweet flavor. The chèvre gave it just the right balance. The cauliflower soup was okay. I'm sorry there wasn't pictures of the salads we ate them then remembered no pictures. The salmon was perfectly cooked which isn't always a given. I'm not a kale fan but the squash was nice. The duck was a first so with nothing to compare it tasted delicious. Our friend gifted us a $50 dollar gift card, so we came here last week to try out their dinner. I have to say, the brunch menu looks better (and probably more affordable) than their dinner menu. I had the duck, it was ok. Portions were small, menu very limited. It is one thing if the menu is limited and food is good, but food was only "meh", not exceptional. So, that was my unfinished review about 1.5 years ago. Yesterday, we came back for lunch. Not because we wanted to give this place a try again but because George and the dragon had a 20 mins wait and we were in a rush. They seated us quickly, but it was then sort of downhill from there. First they seated the 3 of us right in front of the back exit (in the middle of winter mind you). And a truck was unloading their supplies. The door was about 10 feet away from us, and it opened a closed no less than 30 times during our 45 min meal, with cold air coming in every time the delivery person comes through it. Menu was VERY limited. In the end, the 3 of us ordered the wagyu burger. It literally took them 30-40 mins to bring it out. I mean, how long does it take for you to make 3 burgers? Ok, maybe it isn't that long of a wait, but considering the fact that there's only 6 tables that were occupied, that's a long time. Not to mention, there's only ONE waiter to the whole restaurant. Burger was decent, wouldn't say it is the best I've ever had. I got the french onion soup as well, which was great. And we got the fries to share- it was decent (except pricey). Best fry is still at su street cafe. If you are looking for a slice of Paris, look no further. I dropped in this joint order n the early evening on a Friday and got in without a reservation. The couple that owns it are polite, friendly and just what you would expect! I went here for my birthday dinner. Every bite was more delicious than the bite before. I forgot what we ate but I know it was amazing. We will definitely return. House cocktails are delicious and ambiance is lovely. Service was super friendly too and great at anticipating our needs. read more

The food at St. Genevieve is wonderful, the kitchen producing tasteful French classics. Service is friendly, well meaning, and aware. However, the pacing/communication between the kitchen and front is horrific. The time between dishes is agonizingly long, and patience and hunger wain. The layout of the room doesn't help because angles eliminate sight lines for the servers to notice what their diners need. It is a shame, because Saint Genevieve or St. Genevieve has great food. Our lunch took close to two hours for a small afternoon snack. This wasn't a seven course degustation menu. Onion soup, duck confit salad, and an omelet with pomme frites, shouldn't take two hours to serve to a four top. In addition, I have noticed a casual, laid back serving attitude, in many excellent restaurants in Minneapolis, adding an incongruity to the fantastic cooking. These great kitchens deserve more attentive service. A gestalt, all encompassing effort is required to create a fine restaurant experience. It isn't just about cooking, beer and cocktails. Sometimes, restauranteurs in Minneapolis forget this. read more

My husband took us here for our recent 1 yr wedding anniversary (#dinnerversary). We were already traveling in MN that week, and it was a nice surprise. Let me start off by saying that the food was so amazingly delicious, we came back the next day! The first night we arrived for our dinner reservation, the hostess immediately greeted and congratulated us and we sat at a small table off to the side. Our server also congratulated us and took very good care of us during the night. The food runners explained everything they served on the table, ingredients and all. It was a nice touch. The food was delicious but I'll leave the pictures do the talking, but everything was SO good. I will say that will the small plates we got, I was too full to order the scallops I was eyeing (which I ended up ordering the following day). AH. MA. ZING. This is honestly some of the best food I've had in a long time. I was also very impressed with the amount of seafood plates they also offered. My family and I stopped by today at 2 pm on a Sunday. The restaurant was pretty empty with over 20 seats available. We asked for a table for 6, and were told this was not possible. We asked why, and the receptionist advised us that he had reservations. My wife asked when we could be seated and he said in an hour. We walked out confused and when I googled the restaurant hours, they were closing at 3. Can't imagine they had 20 reservations for 2:30. I don't know what to think - maybe he wanted to go home early, maybe the Google hours were wrong, maybe they had 20 reservations for the last 30 minutes of opening hours, or maybe they didn't want to seat 6 brown people. Needless to say, I won't be attempting to find out. read more

This place has been on my brunch list for so long that I am disappointed by my experience. From the moment my friend and I walked in, the hostess/waitress did not care to be polite or friendly. She sat us and walked away. She eventually (10 minutes later) came back. We placed an order for mimosa's and rather than saying, "you've got it!" her response was, "Just know that they are not bottomless and we will charge $14 for each of them." Clearly we had seen the price on the menu and ordered them. Then we placed our food order, ordering multiple dishes on the menu, and she seemed so annoyed (we ordered 3 dishes). At this point, we were just looking forward to our food. The food was mid. She stood there staring at us the entire time wanting to hurry us up (the place was practically empty). When I tried taking food pictures, she rolled her eyes. It got to the point that we simply wanted to get out of there. The service was just so uncomfortable. read more

2 of 4 of us ordered gnocchi and quality wise I gave it a 30 on 10 scale. However the quantity was not even large enough to be an appetizer. We ordered appetizers and still left hungry after dinner and dessert. The guys ordered duck which was also an appetizer portion and fish which was great but no sides for $45. The wine and drinks were very over priced. I was still hungry after dinner and spending close to $300 a couple. If you eat like a bird , then come here as the quality is great - amazing. Otherwise plan to stop at McDonald's on your way home . read more

Saint Genevieve is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. They immediately ask if you want beignets. And they let you have your French Toast toppings on the side if you want. read more
