    The dining room

This place was open at 5:30 am. We were so happy. As we walked in we were treated but sweet older woman, she offered us coffee even before we reached our table. This lady has such a lovely energy we didn't want to leave haha. The food was delicious and good coffee. They have espresso as well. The kitchen looks clean and overall friendly sweet kind environment. Thank you for such a lovely experience so early in the morning

I've been trying to get out of my comfort zone lately, and go to more places I've never visited before. Barbie's is one of those. It's the odd purple building on Lake Otis Pkwy (a road I rarely drive on). They have classic diner fare. Close to what you might find at places like Granny B's. The ambiance is also classic divey-diner, nothing fancy, just how I like 'em. Coffee is typical diner coffee, it's A-OK. I got the "Dice & Scramble". The portions were massive and the quality was high, I was impressed! The service though, was very lacking. My meal didn't come with toast. The server asked me if I ordered toast, I said she didn't ask me, and asked for rye toast. My coffee and my water were empty for about 20 minutes, and then she brought me the tab. Let me tell you, eating salted potatoes with no fluids is ROUGH. I asked if the toast was read and she said "I was wondering who's rye toast has been sitting up there so long!" No apology, no nothing. I still had to request that my drinks were refilled. Ugh.

I was right, as I walked in they sold the very last thing of what I wanted. But gosh am I glad- it forced me to try something new. I didnt take a picture because it was so cold out and my hands were frozen, but it was a beautiful, elongated bakery treat. It had lovely purple Ube cream and touch of oreo crumbs on top, the base was essential much like a flat cruller, but if higher quality. It was sensational! I bought my husband something that looked lower carb that had coffee cream that also enjoyed. I got my husband custom cold jasmine sugar free tea, and I got a frosty honeydew melon drink. It was a little spendy, but its nice to have a treat one on a while.

It's like a croissant baked in a waffle form, but a bit denser than a regular croissant. What really made it special was the Ube cream -- a light, buttery frosting that wasn't too sweet. Easily a 10/10 for me. I also ordered the Ube Cruffin, which had that same croissant-like texture in a muffin shape. The inside had a light cream filling, and the top was covered with the same Ube cream. It was good, but not quite as amazing as the Croffle -- 7/10. The Ham Banh Mi was tasty and filling (6/10), and the Boba Milk Tea was decent too (6/10). Oh and I got to taste their smoked salmon chowder that my friend ordered. Very good flavor, body, and richness (8/10). Everything I had was good but nothing that was as memorable as the Ube Croffle, but it wasn't cheap -- I spent a total $32 for a sandwich, drink and 2 pastries. Then again, prices in Alaska tend to be higher in general. Overall, even though I've only been once, I'd definitely come back for that Ube Croffle -- it was the real highlight!

The space upstairs is functional with multiple different areas including a private area and a space suitable for little kids and relaxing. The drinks were neat imports with just such a subtle sweetness and flavor to them. I had a yuzu drink and it was quite nice and refreshing. The food was chefs kiss. I'm not a fan of fish but I decided to be daring and get the smoked salmon and it was pretty good. I did a create your own bowl and next time I'll be sure to get two spicy mayo and spicy sauce because they tasted wonderful. All mixed up this was phenomenal. I'm excited to come back and try more treats and food combinations here.

Flavors were clean and balanced, and everything felt thoughtfully prepared. I also tried the 16oz Red Bean Matcha--it was smooth, lightly sweet, and paired perfectly with the bowl. The space gives me Hawaii poke spot vibes--spacious, clean, and organized. The two-floor layout has plenty of seating, plus private rooms for meetings or small gatherings, which is a nice bonus. Service was fast and friendly, making the grab-and-go experience seamless and enjoyable. Overall, a solid Midtown spot that's definitely worth checking out.
