Once you get over the local element surrounding the area and visit this location it's great. We went through the drive through and we're quickly greeted in Spanish this gave a nice authentic feel. I asked if we could have a moment, which she was agreeable to. We finally determine what we would try. La Patrona, órale and tóxica. Once we got these home we realized these were some massive sandwiches. I was a little disappointed that it was a traditional torta like I have had in Mexico. It's was a great sandwich. Wow! Very clean and inviting environment when you enter the establishment. Very modern looking decor and the use of today's technology for menu's. The food was freshly made with a good variety of sandwich options. Okay so about the food. The torta bread was light, soft baked and was grilled buttery and crisp on the underside, yum! The flavors are bold and spicy depending on what get, I suggest the Burqueno if you can handle it! this place is definitely worth a try, I will be back but it's something I personally need to be in the mood for. Hard to find as it is hidden in a very new strip mall just east of the car wash at San Mateo and Central, but it's worth a look. It also appears to be the only storefront open in the mall, so I hope they get some help soon. Went for lunch. The place is small, maybe 6 tables, but very clean. The lady behind the counter was nice and tried to help with selection and choices. I ordered La Toxica, a steak and ham combo. I had the chipotle sauce on the side, and I'm glad I did. She said it was hot and she didn't lie! A little went a long way for me! The bread was very good and the meats were tasty. The cheese was good but it sort of overpowered the other flavors. Still, good sandwich. I also enjoyed the watermelon Agua Fresca. It was a little pricey, but it was very good and very fresh. I'll be back to try the other offerings. read more

Bottom Line: Very flavorful sandwiches & agua frescas. Super clean premises. Friendly & helpful counter lady. Strong accent can be hard to understand. A bit high on price for agua frescas. Online menu is brief & easy to understand. Top Line: Being a new business, Don Tortas interior was immaculate & shiny. Counter lady was friendly, outgoing, and helpful toward us making our choices for monthly outing. But her accent was pronounced enough that I struggled to understand what she said. My choice was La Patrona $12 torta with $5 horchata agua fresca. My dining partner went with the La Toxica torta, a side of fries, and pineapple agua fresca. Partner praised the pineapple drink for its flavor. I noted that the horchata possessed a notably heavier body than most I've had, which tend to be quite thin & watery even when they have good flavor. Don Tortas' horchata also was a bit more complex in flavor than most. Not just rice water, sugar, & cinnamon, which is pretty much the most basic & stripped down version. DT's horchata had nutmeg & some other flavor players joining the party, making it a distinctive drink. Sandwiches were large. Generosity on the portion front! The butter grilled toasted rolls were well loaded with meat, vegetation, cheese, dressing. The specific ingredients made for a rich & varied taste. Different textures kept the palate from being bored. Special note of the bread being sufficiently durable to not soggy up or crumble under the load they bore. The jalapeno peppers & chipotle arrived on the side. Chipotle was strong with the smoky flavor and, while it had a nice sting to it, was not as searingly hot as I anticipated. So I put it *all* on my torta & it wasn't too spicy. The pickled jalapeno was a bit hotter. But the hottest of all was the carrot slices that were pickled in with the jalapenos. So I easily recommend Don Tortas on the south side of Central Ave a block east of San Mateo as a good spot to hit up for a breakfast, lunch, or dinner sandwich & really fine agua frescas. read more

One word, wow! Thank you Yelp, another great find. I saw their page on Yelp and I knew I needed a torta right away. I rolled in and couldn't make up my mind. The lady working the counter was so nice and helped me make a decision. I ordered the La Toxica, grilled steak and a smoked pork chop. I also ordered fries and a large horchata. Man the food was good. My only gripe is that I got takeout so the bread was a little soggy by the time I got home. If your feeling like a hot sandwich, definitely check this place out. This place was a surprise. The food is very high quality. The Agua Frescas are the best I've had in Albuquerque ever. Seriously you can come here just to buy drinks. I had the burqueña. My only critique is the chorizo was a little on the salty side. But it did not ruin anything. This place is a top notch choice any day of the week. read more

You know me I love my Toxicas, and it looked good but decided to change it up and got me a Chale! The whole menu looked good af, wanted one of everything but gotta stay fit for my toxicas. Should have chicharrón as well as carnitas on the menu. A restaurant with an authentic Mexican name should have authentic Mexican food. Torta did not have enough meat for price. I ordered the Hawaiana - Deli Ham, Smoked Pork Chop, Grilled Pineapple & Melted Cheese/Chuleta Ahumada, Jamón, Piña y Queso Derretido. Not only did it taste delicious, it was huge! Bad experience all together. To start off, the customer service was terrible. I practice my Spanish and both of the workers were laughing at me, aside from your job, I get it. However, I also wanted a simple torta, and the workers were very rude when I asked to take some items off of the order. For the price of the torta, the asada should be better quality as well. The place that is open is on 98th St on the Westside. The one on Central/International District is closed. Everything I've tried here has been delicious. Get la toxica, add chips, thank me later. Aguas are a little sweet and pricey for my taste but my kids love them. When received the order was completely wrong they made a completely different torta from what I ordered. I saw a tik tok of this place and it was given good reviews. I forgot the creators tik tok name or else I would have provided that. After getting water I told my dad if he wanted to get a torta he said yes so we went. The customer service was awesome and they spoke Spanish which pretty cool. The portion was large as well as the drink. The torta was really good you can tell they use the best quality in products. My only issue was the price. Disappointing is an understatement. I ate here when they first opened. I ordered one of their more specialty Tortas, I believe it was "La Perrona." The total ended up being over $17.00 for just the sandwich and fries, no drink. For this price I could have gone down the street and had an enchilada plate, chips and salsa, a soda, a slice of cheese cake, and table side service. The order took a bout 20 minutes which I guess is understandable since they had just opened and I assume they were still getting things figured out. The sandwich I received was super oily to the point that it soaked through the bread. The bread was also soggy and had an undercooked texture. I was supposed to have gotten Milanesa meat, which usually is a breaded filet, as well as smoked pork chop, ham and beef franks. What I received was a pie of chopped up meat that was apparently all cooked in the same sauce together with no real distinction between what was what. My $15 sandwich also had ONE slice of avocado, and a few shreds of lettuce. The order of fries I received, which were an extra charge, was hardly a kids portion and they were dry and stale with no seasoning or salt. The order also came with a a small ramekin of bland salsa that was only a quarter of the way full and the same amount of ketchup in another. I don't even want to know what a grilled Jalapeño would have cost me, which is something normally included with a meal like this from any other place. In a city that one can easily find a quality Torta for less than half the price, even from a food truck, this place needs to do some home work and figure out their competition. I mean within three square blocks this place you can find way better examples. And with the extraordinary charges this place is wanting people to pay, the quality is definitely not there. I Expected the meal to live up to the name of "Don Tortas," but sadly it was more like "Don Shortas." read more
