    Veggie calzone

(3.5 stars) A classic casual red sauce joint, there is something comforting in the familiarity Baris offers. The old-school interior and the panoply of familiar favorites (pizza, calzone, spaghetti and meatballs, tortellini, manicotti, and more) will take you back to childhood if you grew up with places like this one. Entrees run in the teens here, which is starting to seem more and more like a value these days. The food, however, is pretty solidly average. I went with spaghetti and white clam sauce, and while I've had (and made) better versions of this dish, I appreciated the addition of black pepper. Lara opted for a veggie calzone, which tasted fine yet was decidedly lacking in ricotta. Surprisingly, the rolls (hot, fresh, and generously sized) were above par. Is Baris good Italian? Not if you've had much Italian. Is Baris satisfying in its own way? You betcha.

To start, the service is quick and very friendly. The ambiance is old school Italian and pretty nice for a dinner date. The food though is meh. The pasta tasted like buffet quality pasta and the sauces lacked flavor. We left wishing we had gone to Olive Garden instead, which doesn't speak to a love for Olive Garden...prices are great though so if you aren't into authentic Italian and want a cheap dinner, this could be your place

If you are very hungry and don't have much money to spend on food, this might be the place for you. I'm inclined to agree with a previous reviewer who gave this place a 5-star review and said: "This is the Waco style of Italian food." Because it wasn't close to what I'd call 'authentic Italian food'. I ordered the lunch special of the day: Ziti pasta with tomato sauce, garlic rolls and a green salad all for only $6.99. My wife had an entree salad topped with chicken. Both salads were mostly iceberg lettuce that tasted like it had sat too long. Since my wife wouldn't each more than a couple of bites of her meal, I had some and agreed that the chicken was dry, over-cooked and bland. The other two in my party had the authentic 'spaghetti and meatballs,' which they politely told me was "okay." Three of the four of us love bread with Italian food, yet the majority of the rolls placed on our table were untouched. For me it was because the rolls were too salty. We left a lot of food on the table. I wondered about the many awards Baris was given for their food and concluded that they must have been given before this place went downhill, or that....................well, I'm not going to go there. We had the best experience here! Everyone was so sweet and welcoming. The food was 10/10, and this will definitely be a place I visit often. It has such a homey environment and the best customer service. Highly recommend coming here!

Coming down to Waco for a day trip, we wanted a local restaurant for lunch- and we found it! You can tell Baris has been a neighborhood institution for decades. Great food, phenomenal prices, and a wonderful staff. Natalia was such a friendly and helpful waitress.

Our waitress was Arielle. She was kind & informative. Family owned restaurant. Food was delicious. Pink sauce was great! Portions large. We barely waited for our dishes. Very busy place. The parking is terrible but full of cars! Bc the food is really that good!

I'd go back to Waco just to go to Baris. The food was better than some of the food I had in Italy.

Walking in reminded me of that a good pizza shop growing up. Food was all good but the value for money made it better.

My granddaughter's favorite place and always her birthday choice! She'll be 15 in a few days. I'm betting she will choose it again.

Love the food and rolls, they are very attentive, they would of gotten 5 stars except the place is run down and could use a sprucing up.

They tasted just like a tortilla chip though soooo... I think 2$ is more appropriate (menu also had GF at 4$ and then we were charged 5$ at the end in which I thought I'd be getting gluten free bread too but alas, the app was really really good - a friends complaint is that it could use more lemon flavor, I can see that too) I was also charged 4$ for my gluten free pasta, but the dish was so so so good. The creamy sauce was absolutely incredible. I had the shrimp scampi along with a blueberry syrup mocktail and I was completely satisfied. Also had a taste of the blueberry martini which was also very good. My friend had the lasagna which she rated at 3 stars and said it was overcooked but the sauce was good. My sister had the lobster ravioli and it was undercooked, too al dente for her liking and was dissatisfied as it was the most expensive thing on the menu. My sister would go back, my friend would not, and i definitely would. Service was very nice. I just looked at my receipt and there is a charge for "rustic bread" so I'm not sure what that is... did they charge us for both the GF crackers AND the bread that should have been included in the appetizer? That's also not cool.

Sauce was flavorless. Crust was meh. Even the cheese seemed as if it were food service grade from a huge bag. It was just underwhelming like PeterPiperPizza from when we had to take kids to a bday party. Daughter's dish had shrimp, red sauce, and pasta. Pasta was overcooked. Sauce lacked flavor. And even at that, it was garlicky to the point of bitterness, and we LOVE garlic. She brought most of it home where it sat for a couple of days in the fridge and then got tossed out. It wasn't gross food, by any means, and the relaxing atmosphere was what we were hoping for (not overly loud), but at the end of the day, we have no desire to go back. We really love supporting the local mom and pop shops, and I hate to leave negative feedback, but this just wasn't it for us.
