i recently told a friend that my number one priority for the next place i live in memphis will be "be within walking distance of barksdale's." he told me that this was a worthy and critical priority in house hunting. and that should really tell you most everything you need to know. but i'll tell you just a teeny bit more. barksdale's is the trifecta of restaurant breakfast perfection: 1.) insanely cheap, 2.) delicious, hearty portions, and 3.) incredibly fast, seriously down-home service. if you're a die-hard memphis fan, as i am, you will just have to stomach your revulsion of the color orange while you enjoy your meal because those barksdale folks love them some tennessee vols. that stuff is, as we say in memphis, ERRRWHERE. i always get the breakfast special - it's less than $5 for two eggs, choice of meat, hashbrowns or grits and biscuits or toast. i recommend the biscuits -- we actually usually order extras, they're that good. i waffle back and forth (pun TOTALLY intended) between grits and hashbrowns. even at barksdale's i'm sometimes nervous to order grits, because they're tough to do just exactly right and timing is everything. in a restaurant that can be tricky, no matter where you are. but i can tell you that i've never been disappointed here. the grits skills are commendable. but mostly? i get the hashbrowns, and i cover those things in cheese and onions because i am hungover and my body craves grease and starch. and ketchup. even when they're packed the service is top-notch. it's not the fanciest looking place you've ever been, and there's duct tape on several of the booths. but my mama always told me that meant something was "well-loved." and i'd say barksdale's has definitely been well-loved in memphis for many years -- with good reason. read more

They make a decent breakfast but I like The Pancake Shop better. Good meat and veg lunch place. I like the stuffed bell peppers when they have them. Nothing is going to blow you away but service is friendly and it's getting harder to find old school places like this. Worth stopping in. read more

I really love going to places, especially Mom & Pop run, when I'm visiting a new place to get a sense of the neighborhood and its locals. This place is one of them. People are right in the sense that it looks as if it hasn't changed since the heydays of the late '60s early '70s with their wood paneling on the walls, but there are customers still packing their restaurant so they must be doing something right. I had Sweet Tea, biscuits and gravy, grits, and a veggie omelet all for under $8.00 and a sweet waitress who took care of me. I also had a wonderful conversation with a Memphis native about football (Memphis being SCC fans rather than Tennessee Titans fans) and about the Mason/Dixon line and cultural differences with me being a "Yankee". I'd take this place over any touristy restaurant for the food and good conversation. I'd love to come back again. read more

The Barksdale is the absolute BEST place to eat with kids. We live in the neighborhood and take our 2 year old here almost every weekend. The food is good and inexpensive. The atmosphere is really laid back, and all the waitstaff are friendly, helpful, and welcoming. They frequently bring a toy or coloring book to the table for our little guy to play with, and once they even brought us extra biscuits when he was getting fussy because the food was taking a little longer than normal. It's not just a place for kids, but it is probably the most toddler friendly place I've ever eaten. Thanks for making the neighborhood feel like a community! read more

It has been a few years since I visited Barksdale, but it will be a mainstay from now on. It is different to not see Bob there, but the waitstaff and cooks are keeping up the great tradition of friendliness and a welcoming smile for everyone that walks in the door. Admittedly, we already ate breakfast, ran some errands, and got hungry again, but not hungry enough to order a huge meal. Yes, it's hard to mess up biscuits, country ham, and oatmeal, but we have been places where it has been done. Not at Barksdale- everything was served hot, tasted great, refills brought without having to be asked, and our server was great. Did I mention how cheap Barksdale is? I never saw this place until I passed it 4,972 times. It's basically a locally run diner with a menu similar to Waffle House. Nothing fancy but totally hits the spot. As long as you go in with old school not frills expectations you'll love it. Biscuits are great! read more

I'm not a grits and gravy type, so I ordered a burger. It was pretty good, I asked for it cooked a specific way and it was. It's nothing out of this world, but I'd stop in again to have one -- definitely a good little place to stop in and have lunch while you're meandering around Midtown. This WAS my fave place for breakfast and a good old fashioned plate lunch. Two of us went back for the first time in a few years for breakfast this past Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, and were treated to cold bacon, cold sausage, cold grits, cold hash browns, and semi-warm biscuits. The only thing remotely heated were the eggs which I'm assuming is the only thing they actually cooked after, rather than before, ordering. If you're going to use a heat lamp, learn how. The only saving grace was our delightful waitress who tended to us in a timely manner and left a sweet note on the ticket. Otherwise, very, VERY disappointed. read more

After being gone for several years I was pleasantly pleased to find that Barksdale was still in business. Went there for Lunch today and the food was as delicious as it was back in the late 90's. What a bargain with 1 meat and 3 veggies , plus cornbread and rolls. ALL homemade. I will definitely be going back there. Love the atmosphere and the friendly staff. No waiting for your food here. Service was very good and staff very friendly. I liked the atmosphere. I had French toast, eggs, bacon and coffee. French toast was below average with the bottom burnt. The eggs and bacon were ok but not great. Coffee was typical low end diner coffee. Not close to Starbucks level. This is the 2nd diner I've been too since moving to Memphis. The other one was West St diner in Germantown. It was worst than this one by far. read more

Loved this place. The patina of age and hot memphis air give this og diner a great feel. Gloria our server seemed to know all the regulars calling them by name. I ate some of the best biscuits and milk gravy I had in a while. Hash browns ok, eggs fluffy and fresh. You can taste it when they are good. All in all with two breakfasts and coke and coffee a cool 12 bucks. What a bargin for a not only a amazing meal but a slice of a Americana served up in a place that seems to be a dying breed. Great local hole in the wall country cooking restaurant in the heart of Memphis one and only midtown! The prices you can't beat! They have some of the best breakfast in town! Excellent customer service, great atmosphere. My kids really loved the pancakes. I would definitely visit over and over again.

We walked out. Waitress was very friendly initially. The atmosphere was that "worn out and seen better days" that my spouse and I usually go for. The menu was cheap. ++ Prompt seating, on a Saturday. ++ 30 minutes after ordering eggs over easy with a side of ham I observed a 2 top and a 4 top who had arrived 15 minutes after we did being served a fairly involved order of pancakes and omelets. We had yet to see any sign of our order. I asked the waitress if there was a problem with our order. She proceeded to argue saying " Some orders take longer then others." I pointed out the tables that arrived after us already served and reminded her we had fried eggs. She continued to argue claiming that fried eggs take a while. I don't argue before breakfast and clearly I wasn't going to be having mine any time soon. We paid 5 dollars for 2 terrible cups of coffee and a small juice. We did tip, and left. When it comes to classic breakfast/lunch diners, it doesn't get any more real than Bob's. The atmosphere is relaaaaxed, the staff are amazingly nice, and the menu is super simple and literally the same as it prob was 30 yrs ago (in fact, I think they should consider upping the prices a bit). gahhhhhh I just ate more carbs in one sitting than I did on thanksgiving. No seriously. They're not joking around with the southern deliciousness here. Ordered chicken fried steak and Will ordered the meatloaf. Both got sides of turnip greens, mashed potatoes and gravy, and mac 'n cheese. Rolls and cornbread are phenomenal. Only thing we didn't inhale immediately was the mac 'n cheese because I think the kitchen forgot to bake it! Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Since it was our first time in, Bob brought us a complimentary pancake and homemade syrup. IHOP, you're dead to me now. When we return, we'll both be getting pancakes! Service was great, and the atmosphere reminded us of our favorite place in Knoxville - Long's. Bob clearly has an incredible work ethic (you'll find him wearing orange sneakers and either chatting up customers or working the register). We look forward to visiting him again. read more
