Anytime I'm in Germantown close to West street I always stop in here for lunch. Accessible parking lot in front of the building and a welcoming staff. The food is always fresh, hot and delicious. Comfort food at its best and the atmosphere to match. The fried catfish was so good. It came out hot and lightly breaded with the inside of the fish a nice dense moist texture easy to cut with a fork. The greens and beets were very good also. The homemade sweet bread was excellent and delicious. Unfortunately I never have room enough for dessert but may have to take a slice of pecan pie home for later. The service was excellent and this is definitely a well visited local establishment as the folks poured in and waited for open seats. Price of my lunch excluding the tip was $17.49. read more

One of my favorite diners ever. Classic diner setup: a long, bright hall with booths and often lots of people. The service is extremely quick and servers are friendly. The prices are awesome! I've shopped around at West Street: pancakes, patty melts, it's all good. But I always come back to fried catfish and fried okra. It's always fresh, hot, and crispy. Man sometimes a diner is what you need. We originally went to Big Bad Breakfast but I'm sorry man that joint ain't worth a 60 minute wait. Maybe the one in Oxford but not the Memphis location. Anyway back to West St Diner. One of us wanted lunch and three wanted breakfast. It was almost noon (pay no mind to the time shown on the clock that I shared). Lunch guy got a cheeseburger and French fries. Good looking burger with 2 slices of cheese and generous amounts of lettuce 'maters and onions. Crinkle cut fries. One got strawberry pancakes, the strawberries were frozen (thawed of course) as opposed to fresh. Still tasty though. One had biscuit and gravy an egg and some toast (biscuits were home made) and I had eggs Benedict and hash browns - the hash browns are fresh taters diced and cooked on the skillet top. We took the suggestion of a local to eat here - and you may need to be a local to overlook some things here. First, the front door and entryway were less than inviting. We almost turned around and left - and maybe should have, as the inside was just like the front door and entry way. This place is just dirty. Not what I would expect from this "high-end" area - as we were told by the local we took the suggestion from. The menu is not all that self-explanatory and the waitress snubbed her nose when I asked questions. When she answered, she did in a manner that made certain I knew she thought I was dumb. As for the burger and sirloin steak we ordered - they both tasted great! But the restaurant could use a cleaning, including the flooring, the condiment bottles on the tables and especially the restrooms. We would avoid this place on our next visit in town. read more

I have been dining at West St Diner a few years. I make it there at least once a week to dine in. The main dish that I get often is the catfish. It's tasty and fried to perfection. Just recently I dined in and ordered my usual catfish with fries. This time it was DIFFERENT. When I received my plate I noticed IT WAS NOT CATFISH. ITS SWAI FISH. I was HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. I called the waiter over to ask her is this swai fish. She said "Yes it's swai fish. We've always sold swai fish" This is when I told her I have never received swai fish as an entree when I come here. She was very rude with her response. I completely lost my appetite after being served Swai Fish & the waitress telling me they always serve swai fish. I WILL NOT be dining there anytime soon. It was a traumatic experience given that I was 11 years old and ordered an egg salad sandwich, don't ask why, and I couldn't eat it because it tasted like a perm smells!! Does that even make sense? Anyway, my dad forced me to eat it, you know, if you ordered it you eat it kinda thing. It was so gross. Never went back until today when my husband suggested it. I was hesitant but I'd heard that they had a pretty good breakfast so I was a good sport. Service was good. I went for the "Friday" special catfish. I had a very unimpressive visit all around. I am on the fence on even two stars. My waitress was just kind of blah. She displayed almost zero personality and did her job without any indication of at least having the slightest personal contentment in her life. Wrong job sweetie, your personality is more suited for convenience stores and not as person who depends on tips to make a living. The catfish was mushy and had a very strange texture to it. I am not sure if it was Swai but it was at the very least the worst catfish I have ever had. The price was fair on the menu but what I was served sucked and was not worth the money paid for it. It came with one fillet and was very thin. I was almost afraid it was bad because of the texture. The macaroni and cheese was fair at best, not much to say about them. The mashed potatoes were maybe the best thing I had, but still inferior to almost all other places around. KFC has better mashed potatoes... The bread served was the worst I have ever had. I am not even sure what the square one was supposed to be. Both were room temperature and not good at all. I don't think we will be trying it again. read more

Thoroughly impressed with this hole-in-the-wall diner! I was visiting from out of town and looking for a place to eat breakfast one day, when I saw a Groupon (http://www.groupon.com/r/uu159756) for this place! The ambiance was very "mom's kitchen table" to me. The tables had vinyl tablecloths of an orangy color and the booth seats were made of leather complete with the comforting tears and holes that lets you know many have come before you to eat the deliciousness of West Street Diner. They even have a booth area up front with a true 50s feel: leather covered swivel stools, black and white checkered tile, and a full-on view of the sweaty kitchen workers greasing up the griddle for your eggs. I ordered the blueberry pancakes, sausage, and grits. I was expecting blueberries inside of my pancakes, but got 3 humongous plain pancakes covered with the biggest mound of blueberries I have ever seen (see picture)!! I think my eyes nearly shot out of my head when I saw the dish placed in front of me. The grits never came which I was later told by staff it was a "tragedy"- but to me I was very lucky I didn't have any more food to eat! All the food was average, or possibly better than average. It's a diner- I don't think the food is supposed to be gourmet! All items were very reasonably priced, and the staff feels like family. All the customers that came in seemed like regulars, as the staff greeted them by name and would spend time chit-chatting with them. Whether you are feeling eggs sunny side up or are just trying to cure a hangover, I would definitely recommend West Street Diner over any Denny's or other chain breakfast joint. I was really impressed with this place. I admit, I'm a huge fan of Perkins omelettes and it feels like nothing will ever be quite as good as theirs, but this was just as tasty for me. The first time I came I got the Western Omelette with hash browns and biscuits. It was flatter than I've had at other places, but no less tasty. The cheesegrits were ok for a few bites but I just wasn't fond of them. (I'd told them I'd never tried them and they kindly gave me a free sample). I'm not really that fond of cheese nor grits, so I wasn't surprised when I discovered the combination did not do it for me. I also tried their home-made sourdough biscuits and enjoyed what I did eat (I got full on the rest of it and didn't finish them). In general, the food tastes a little more "real" in that they didn't seem like they came from a factory and the ingredients were fresh, not bough pre-packaged from the store. I came back with some friends and was actually a little disappointed. I loved the omelette I got before but there isn't a lot of variety here, so there's not a lot of room to experiment. There are a few other options for omelettes but they're pretty plain. You can add what you want from a choice of ham, peppers, onions, cheese, and mushrooms. But adding all that I want basically turns it into a Western Omelette. I got the Reuben the second time and it was good but I think I'll stick with coming here when I'm craving omelettes. I had not been here in a very long time so dropping in today after a doctors appointment wasn't planned but the bagel shop down the way is being remodeled so here we are. They have all the regular breakfast offerings with cheese grits or breakfast potato choices or all the breads or biscuit. The good news is that I can get a side salad before breakfast, bad news it's only lettuce and tomato. I think I am spoiled with my Perkins morning salads with croutons, onions, etc. Breakfast is cheese & bacon omelet with breakfast potatoes & biscuit for me and my honey is having the cheese omelet with potatoes and rye toast. The verdict is in and the cheese in the omelets is rich and creamy and the potatoes are good and the biscuit is excellent. Tons of condiments and sauces on the table and the ice water and coffee kept flowing. I am writing this while sitting at the table, not my norm, because I want to give this real diner feel place a shout out for a good, reasonable breakfast and nice service. We have been here twice. We tried them because, they have 2 coupons in the city coupon book. This is how we are able to try a variety of things Memphis has to offer. We've only been for breakfast. So, the 1st time we went, our table was sticky. Our table had a plastic table cloth, n my arms/elbows were stuck.. The servicer's were friendly tho. It took awhile for our food. And our waitress explained, the owner was on vacation and some of the staff decided to vacation so to say.. Ok, we werent in a hurry. Just Friday morning breakfast. So about a month or 2 passed and we returned. This time my omelet was sent back because the inside was filled with runny eggs.. Our waitress was sweet, no complaints there but after waiting forever for our food, on both occasions, I wasnt impressed. N my food wasnt good all the way through. My husband's pancakes were really dark brown. Didnt try them, they weren't fluffy. Thin/ semi burnt pancakes.. no thank you, plz. But let me say those freaking grits are amazing n the biscuits follow.. so, would i/we return, not sure maybe 3rd times the charm. This is a favorite!!! West Street Diner is always delicious for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We have enjoyed almost everything on the menu. The hamburger and fries are big enough to split. Although, when I don't, I eat it all because it's so good. Our regular is the fried catfish; it is the best in the south. Their catfish never has that winter fishy taste. The fish is always light, and the batter is crisp! You can't go wrong with any of the sides; all the vegetables are southern cooked to perfection. You will enjoy West Street Diner!! read more
