I scheduled what I thought was going to be a tune-up and got what was a very expensive oil change. When I asked Jennifer about only getting an oil and filter, she said you only requested a tune-up. I said if I wanted an oil change and filter I would have asked for it. My total charges for this "tuneup" came to $317.00. This is OUTRAGEOUS! I do not recommend Barnhoorn Automotive. It's my pleasure to review Barnhoorn Automotive. They are old school mechanics with old school values. I'm old enough to have had many car experiences in my life and know bs when I smell it. In the auto repair business, the corporate dealer mechanics don't want to fix anything anymore as much as they'd rather replace your part completely - or get you into a new car. As many know, who wants to spend that kind of money? Not me. But I will spend when it makes sense. So when my car engine began slugging on the hill of the 73, my immediate thought was, "Get me to Barnhoorn". Sadly, my engine had other plans in mind. After mistakenly kicking my clutch into 2nd while going uphill, the skip did my engine in. I fortunately had bumper to bumper extended warranty so I had an appraisal at a dealer. Close to $10k to replace and repair. But the warranty would cover only the value of my car - much less. I spoke with Jennifer and Marcel and they were able to find a used engine that worked with my budget. After a moderate amount of out-of-pocket, we were in business. Marcel brought the car back to life and it's been running better than ever since then. I expect to end up financially ahead of the game as the car needed major service anyhow. Marcel was fair and a good guy to talk with. Getting to know how much they care about fixing the problem is a rarity now-a-days. I'd highly recommend them for fair and quality service. If you are tired of taking your car to the dealer for an oil change and end up paying $400 for all the stuff they think you need done...then try Barnhoorn. These folk's are truly top notch. The vehicles they work on are pretty cool. Lots of restorations and stuff, classic euro cars (from what I see). I almost feel unworthy to drop my Scion Xb or old 82 Mercedes off for oil changes or brake pad changes. But when I do, i never get overcharged or have work recommended that does not need to be done. My wife went a couple weeks ago and the only recommendation was new brake pads and down the road (pardon the pun) new front tires. They let us know how long we could go on the current pads and tires and the cost installed of the new ones. After shopping around, these guys are the best. After repeatedly getting fleeced at the Land Rover dealership, not to mention they are pretty rude and have poor communication, I tried Barnhoorn. I was living in Laguna at the time and they advertised working on Rovers. I was so impressed with their service and prices, I have been loyal since. I love how it's always the same guys, they keep an eye on work that needs to be done and give me honest estimates of how long I can push it until I need to have something fixed. They even recommended I trade in my Land Rover when the steering column came loose rather than fixing it, even though they would have made money if I had done the repair. They knew with my mileage, I would keep having expensive repairs and they gave me honest advice. I have a Volvo now and I no longer live in Laguna, but still bring it here for service. Awful owner. Bought used car and previous owner I bought car from got a 02 sensor put in from this socalled "automotive mechanic shop". I called after check engine light came on and told them about the 02 sensor showing up as the same code they supposedly "fixed". The lady on the phone didn't like that I questioned their work when I told them about the sensor. I just wanted them to check to make sure it was the correct sensor and to see if everything is OK. Showed up first thing in the morning and the owner didn't want to do business because "I didn't like his 02 sensor". Just asked to see if they can double check everything. Owner said I can leave the car there all day and they will get to it when they get to it. The garage only had 1 car being worked on at the time. I was on a time crunch and said I couldn't do that. He gave me a refund for their 02 sensor. Took the car to my mechanic and have them check it out. Ended up being a crack manifold near the sensor, on top of the wrong sensor they put in. Seems like they don't do a thorough job on their "diagnostic" considering my mechanic found the issue right away on top of the wrong sensor they put in. Owner said have fun paying $600 for a OEM sensor. I paid $95 for the CORRECT sensor. Manifold was an easy fix luckily. I'm glad I didn't let them work on my car. Don't let them take advantage of you. And yes I'm a real person. I don't do yelp reviews but needed to for this joke of a shop. read more

Marcel is maybe the best mechanic in town and that's hard to do when this small town is known for its great mechanics. He can fix anything. And he's old school . can't fix it ,don't pay. If it doesn't need it he won't do it. Just what you need read more

I had a really great experience with this company. Passing through Laguna Beach on a vacation I needed to take my car in to get it looked at because I have been having some transmission problems. They took it out for a test drive and got back to me with a diagnosis. After telling me how much it would cost to fix they didn't pressure me to get it fixed. On the contrary, they recommended that I had enough time to finish my vacation and then get it fixed back home. Additionally, when I brought it in I told them that based on my last car checkup at my home dealership they would likely have to replace the brakes. Not only did they tell me that the brakes were still good and didn't need replacing, they measured the amount of brakes left to be more than my home dealership did six months ago! They could have easily said "yup, your brakes need replacing" and took my money, but they didn't. These guys are HONEST and TRUSTWORTHY. I would highly recommend them! read more

Simply the best place to service you car - family owned and operated. I took my car there to get a horrible noise in engine bay looked at ... was worried it was something really bad. The owner Marcel STOPPED what he was doing and said he would take it for a quick ride right there on the spot ! ... 5 minutes later he came back, moved the car he was working on out of the way and put my car up on the lift ... about 20 minutes he pulled it out and explained in detail what it was, apparently a common minor suspension issue with my Mercedes model ... I asked him how much i owed and thanked him and he said nothing .. NOTHING. When was the last time THAT has happened right ?? I take all my cars there now and am so happy to have found these honest guys. I will go NO WHERE ELSE. read more
