I don't recommend this office . They force you to either accept treatments not covered by your insurance or go somewhere else (and of course i went somewhere else). I have attached my treatment plan that i was given by this dental office. I needed two crowns for two of my teeth plus a filling. I have a really good insurance that covers most of my dental expense (e.g. 80% of crown expenses). On the treatment plan, for each crown they included a treatment which is basically removing gum using laser which was obviously not covered by my insurance (typical strategy by dental private practices to charge patients extra as through insurance they are capped on how much they can charge for standard treatments). When I requested to remove that as this did not seem necessary (I have done multiple crowns in other places without ever needing such special procedure) , I got a somewhat condescending answer from the receptionist that Dr. through his education at USC has been taught this treatment is necessary and is not willing to remove this! This was the first time I had to deal with a situation where a dentist was forcing me to go through a seemingly optional treatment. I did get second opinions (from USC graduate dentists as well) on this and as I suspected this treatment is not necessary! Unfortunately, going to this office was a huge waste of time so for the next patients considering this office, you might want to double check about the treatments that might be forced on you later on and might want to save yourself some time and go somewhere else. read more

I used to come here for routine cleaning from 1 particular dental technician. She did an exceptional job like no other dental technicians so far I have experienced. I had my teeth cleaned by a different dental technician, it was a 0/5. There was a lot tapping and counting on my teeth not at all cleaning. Since my gold medal dental technician is no longer there, I stopped coming here. Dr. Shafaee was very honest and helpful. She noticed an issue on the root of my molar and recommended a known endodontist, a specialist for a specific issue. Much respect for the doctor for the fact that she put her patient needs to a better hand rather than her financial again by doing the work herself. Yes I have experienced other dentist performed a horrible root canal job. Almost most of them want to do the job rather than refer to an endodontist. Yes, a dentist is capable of performing a root canal, but not as meticulous as an endodontist. read more

It took me over a year to finally write this review. My husband and I were patients of this office of many many years. Almost 2 years ago they said I needed to have a small cavity done between my 2 molars. After the filling I was in a lot of pain, and I called them many times to ask for help. The dentist spoke to me over the phone and said it shouldn't hurt, but it did for months after and I was told over the phone that I needed to get root canals. I did go in one time and he filed the opposing molars down a little and that made the opposing molars hurt. Fast forward months after I finally had to have root canals for both molars. The office manager just kept telling me I just needed to have root canals as if it's a small thing. They were trying to make me go away because there was an issue. They did not even ask me to come back in except the one time to file down my teeth. At no point did they take any responsibility or offer more assistance. I later went to other dentists and were told the cavity filling wasn't even necessary as they didn't see anything on the x-rays before the procedure. Because of this ordeal i have had severe TMJ pain and bite issues due to not being able to use the side they did work on for a long time, and have spent over $20k to try to salvage some sort of resemblance of a life. This office has literally ruined my quality of life and drained my finances. Yes, teeth can have that big of an impact, please choose your dentist carefully. read more

How many people can say they like going to Dentist? Me!!! Jamie in the front office is amazing. She is friendly, efficient and always greets you with your name and a smile so big you can see it despite her mask! She always follows through with an emailed receipt, referral or treatment plan. If you need a crown they can do it the same day, no need for a temporary and a 2 week wait. The best hygienist ever works here, Ashely! I tell her every time I prefer her cleaning my teeth every 4 months over getting my nails or any other pampering thing I can think of. Because she's a hygienist she spends a lot of time cleaning your teeth and I love it! There are two doctors working here, husband and wife. I've been to the male doctor who was excellent! I've worked as a dental assistant and as a front office assistant at a dental office before so I can tell a good doctor when I see one. He explains everything with patience; and takes all my questions very seriously. During your composite/ filling procedure they offer you headsets; take it, they're really relaxing! They used pretty decent material too from what I could tell. This is odd to mention but he also makes sure your completely numb throughout any drilling, a lot of old school doctors prefer less epinephrine despite discomfort and having a few bad experiences with an old dr I'm glad this dr. shares a more modern view. Lastly, you always get a call after most of your procedures to check-up on how you're doing. And all the staff members are very nice esp. front desk. Con: -They couldn't schedule in my Mom given 2 months in advance on any Tu anytime. I was forced to make an appt. for her elsewhere and she mostly just comes here now to see the hygienist on occasion. -Also, I was canceled on the day of my appt. in Dec. I was so upset! Its funny cuz you sign a document that if your late/cancel they will charge you $75 but apparently its okay for them to cancel on you and I didn't hear an apology or reasoning. If they had said something like, so sorry the hygienist is sick, I would completely understand. Opposed to some vm at 8am saying "we have to reschedule but as of the moment we don't have any more availability. But you will be placed on the waiting list." More strange is when I complained about them canceling on me they called me back saying my appt. had magically opened up again..tho by then it was too late... Its just a fact that all dental offices give preference to new pts and bigger procedure appts. toward the end of the year and I think the two things above exemplify that. -Always call me around 8am My scheduling cons have occurred over a long span of time and are prob. more unique to me. Last Friday evening at 5:30 pm I chipped one of my rear molars. Of course Barranca Canyon Dentistry office was closed. I called the office and listened to a voice mail. At the end of the message was contact information for after hour emergencies. I called and left a message for the Doctor S, not expecting a call back since this was a 3 day weekend (Memorial Day). Two hours later my phone range and it was Doctor S. I explained to him what had happened. He seemed genuinely concerned. He asked me if I could meet him Saturday am to address my dental issue. I went to the office Saturday am. Just me and Doctor S. He took x-rays, prepped me and pulled the tooth chip that was hanging from my upper gum. DONE! 30 minutes in and out. Going to the dentist is always the worst, but my experience at Barranca Canyon is one of the best I've had! The receptionist was always extremely nice and helpful. The cleaning was fairly standard, Samira Shafaee was the dentist that did my evaluation and she was nice. The receptionists here are always super sweet and friendly. I got a regular teeth cleaning and was left so disappointed. It felt like the hygienist just quickly polished my teeth and that was it. Historically, I have always had pretty good hygienists here, but my most recent experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I spoke to my mom, and she experienced the same when she came for her routine cleaning. Maybe they changed their protocol for cleaning since COVID? I don't know, but it's not as thorough as it used to be. I give 1 star for how kind the staff is, but unfortunately the service being provided is below par. read more

Best Dentist I've ever been too hands down! I've been a patient at BCD for over 6 years. The level of quality and customer satisfaction that I experience when visiting is 2nd to none. The lobby and general facilities are always so clean and welcoming. This place is not your dads old dentist from years ago. This place has a modern, and beautiful décor, that smells great as soon as you hit the lobby. I love the fact that I can listen to music through the wireless headphones that they provide. I haven't had to hear the sounds of the cleaning equipment for years! They even make a note of what stations I like so that its ready for me on my next visit. I also love how accommodating they are to my eccentric needs. They are totally flexible, and do everything that they can to help me with my crazy schedule! I've had to cancel last minute tons of times and its never a problem. They do all that they can to help out. The staff is amazing. Jamie, and the girls up front keep the engine running perfectly. While the hygienists in the back get the job done beautifully. I love both Dr. Shahriyarpours (husband/wife team) Theyreally show that they care about their patients. They remember our conversations, and don't make me feel like I'm just some patient in for a routine cleaning. I don't even live in Irvine, but I will drive from wherever I am to use their services. BEST DENTISTS and staff in town!! I've been going to Drs. Shafaee and Shahriyarpour since 2007 and referred family and friends. Even when they moved locations to a different part of town, I've followed them! That's how wonderful they are. They are compassionate, attentive, dedicated, personable and so knowledgeable. Because of how transparent they are and how they educate you on any procedure that is NECESSARY, they make you feel comfortable in trusting their judgment. 9/27/12 original post: I am astounded by the great reviews on Yelp compared to my experiences at the Barranca Dentistry. My experience was everything... but great. Today, Priscilla picked up the phone when I called to confirm that Dr. Schafaee accepts Aetna dental insurance. They said yes, so I asked if I could schedule an appointment with Dr. Schafaee. Priscilla says that the doctor is not available until November for the next appointment, but she said to hold on a second. She came back on the phone and said they have an appointment today at 2pm if I would like to take it. November (which is a long time away) or a last minute appointment (which I need to make schedule adjustments to accommodate) - I said, "Sure, it's kinda last minute, but if that's the doctor's only availability, I'll take it.". When I showed up, completed my paperwork, and sat down on the dental chair, they told me "Denise will be doing your dental cleaning today." WHAT?!? Who's Denise?? I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Schafaee, not Denise. It must be a mistake. They said Dr. Schafaee is not here today. WHAT?!? I drove an hour round-trip to get my teeth cleaned only to be "bait-and-switch". I would consider this very unethical and unscrupulous business practice. Be careful. I am still looking for a reputable and great dentist in the area. If you have any rec's, please let me know. -------UPDATE on 10/14/12 in response to Owner's comments: ---------- I am very shocked by the lack of scruples & ethics of this dental office. Rather than accepting responsibility for a mistake which they had made, Dr. SHAHRAM SHAHRIYARPOUR decided to attack me in return for an incident which he did not witness and fabricates an entirely different re-count of the incident with his staff! I was not informed that Dr. Shafaee was on maternity until November. I am a first time customer and do not know any history about the office or its medical staff. Priscilla said that Dr. Shafaee does not have any other appointment until November, unless I am willing to take an appointment the very same day at 2pm. [Priscilla did not disclose Dr. Shafaee was not in the office (or on maternity leave) nor that my appointment would be with a dental hygienist.] Also, I did not state that I had a x-ray 6 months ago (because I didn't). The reason why I can't get an x-ray is because I informed Priscilla that I am pregnant and cannot have x-rays taken. I asked Priscilla to confirm that Dr. Shafaee has experience working with pregnant patients and to confirm that Dr. Shafaee accepts my medical insurance. Being that I am pregnant myself, I am diligent about asking the right questions and making sure my requests are clear - to make sure I am getting the proper medical attention. My experience at the dental office was already a poor experience. Now based on the Yelp response back from Dr. Shahram Shahriyarpour, I am outright astonished by all of the wonderful & glowing dental reviews for this office. I now question the validity of the YELP reviews based on the lack of ethics of this dental office. I am sorry Dr. Shahram - giving someone a second chance to prove your dental office's reputation (which you claim to have earned) is NOT to fabricate lies about what had occurred. I would suggest your dental office to really think about how you treat your customers - whether new ones or old ones. read more

I felt the most uncomfortable I have ever felt at a Dentist's office! Think car or time share sales. I have never had issues with my teeth (at almost 35 years old, 4 cavities/fillings in my life and nothing else). I was given this massive write up at the end of my appointment which outlined over $2,000 of work that "needed" to be done (my insurance would have covered it all). I was a bit skeptical, given the aggressive sales nature so I got not one, but two second opinions to be safe. Both dentists said I have no issues. Absolutely shameful. I only tried this place because of the yelp reviews but anyone can get their friends/family to write a great review. Beware. read more

This place is excels in every way possible. Dr. Shahriyarpour is one of the nicest people I've met, and he's done an excellent job every time I've gone in for a cleaning or fillings. The staff there is outstanding too: Jamie, Priscilla, and Ana have never been anything less than an A+ when it comes to making sure everything related to the appointment goes well. It's not only the service while you're there - they're also awesome about scheduling appointments and following up after fillings. In fact, I remember a time when I was trying to figure out something related to my insurance plan, and Dr. Shahriyarpour spent a good 10-15 minutes on the phone with me to help explain it all. I have always dreaded coming to the dentist but ever since I found Dr. Shahriyarpour and his wonderful staff, I always look forward to my appointment. The office is very well kept, the staff is always welcoming, hygienists always do a fantastic job and Dr. Shahriyarpour is always pleasant and never "up sells" you with procedures. I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I've observed how they work around their equipment/tools and everything is handled with care for sanitary reasons. I have been coming here for a few years now and I wanted to wait until I can write a valid review. If you've always been afraid of the dentist, this office will definitely change that! Barranca Dentistry has relocated and re-named itself to Barranca Canyon Dentistry. They are now located at the Canyon Medical Plaza building off Laguna Canyon Road. Just went to a cleaning at the new location and its a very beautiful and modern office! all new equipment and technology but with the same great staff and dentist!
