They had me go through all sorts of tests, which cost a lot of money. When I mentioned it to my friends, they said it sounded like I'd been scammed. They ground down the spaces between my perfectly healthy teeth, and now I can't even eat noodles. When I went back because of the discomfort, they responded with, "Why would you eat noodles?" I've unfortunately been a little slow on writing the review, but finally, after coming to this yelp page again so many times to recommend Dr Choi to my coworkers and friends, I decided to finally write a review. Not a ton of time on my hands, so here goes- my veneer story. I've been wanting veneers for many years. I had small teeth, some gaps, and a lot of gum, but never took the leap. My coworker got veneers and they looked amazing! They were so amazing, I decided I should also take the leap and get mine. I went to my friend's dentist and can you say sticker shock It would have costed the same as a brand new Honda. Since my mind was made up that i wanted them (just didnt want to pay that much), I opted to look around. I talked to a few offices and landed here. I was honest, and let them know i was serious about doing this, but didnt want to spend the same amount i put down on my house! The office staff was professional and it was easy to get an appt. I got my regular cleaning, then had a consult. Dr. Choi is an amazing dentist! He let me know what it would take, what they could offer, and was honest. He explained the process, showed me pics, etc. From there, i talked to the office manager and went over cost. I was able to get an agreeable price. I paid a down payment, and then the balance the day of the procedure. They were prompt with appts, send text reminders, and were very helpful. Only thing that sucked, was i had to travel for work as an emergency, missed an appt, and got charged 200$. I wasnt happy about that, but nonetheless every other experience was great. The dentist cared about how i felt. He made sure i wasnt in pain and was well taken care of. He listened to what i liked, and provided his professional opinion. In the end, i got my gums trimmed and top veneers. I am so beyond pleased with the results. I always smiled alot, but now get so many compliments on my teeth. During the Covid-19 pandemic, this office went to great lengths to make sure it could still help patients while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Only one patient was allowed into the office at any one time. As for the exam itself, I went in for a routine checkup and was done in about 20 minutes. Stay away from this place, aka: Smile By Design, Dr Hyeonju Choi. Dr Choi has at least 3 (Three) Dental Malpractice lawsuits against him in 2012, 2014 and 2017. The last case is apparently still pending in Orange County Superior Court and is set for trial for July 22, 2019. The first two Malpractice lawsuits against Hyeonju Choi apparently settled. Dr Choi is probably the most incompetent and unethical Dentist I have ever seen. His staff are extremely rude and unethical as well. If you are still going to go to this place make sure you have a good dental Malpractice lawyer. He placed an implant for me in July 2018. He used a cheap and off-brand implant called Megagen. He botched it. I've been in pain ever since. In addition, He tried 4 times to place various crowns for it, all failed due to excessive pain and other complications. Judging from his extremely poor work, one would wonder if so called Dr Hyeonju Choi has any type of Dental training at all. He never returned my emergency after-hours calls. He never told me about his pending Dental Malpractice case and other Dental Malpractice cases against him. MALPRACTICE!!!!! I started a toothache on the night of August 25th, 2020 I thought of calling Smile by Design to have it at least seen. However, I realized that it was already too late and their office was already closed. So I decided to call in the next morning. Wednesday, August 26th, first thing in the morning I called but unfortunately their office is closed on Wednesdays according to the recorded message. I then went online to at least make an emergency appointment with them. So they called me back on Thursday, morning saying that the earliest time that they could see me is "tomorrow", Friday, August 28th. They then advised me to take some Advil at least to alleviate the pain. So I went to their office on Friday, Aug. 28th, and Dr. Choi's assistant directed me right away to the dentist's seat. Dr. Choi, told me that since I am not ready financially to get an implant (which he's been trying to sell me for more than a year now), he would just do a "partial root canal". Having that severe pain, I could think further anymore and all I wanted was to get my pain out. So then he injected some local anesthesia to make me numb and continue on to the partial root canal procedure. A couple of hours later, I just got home and still feeling numb on my cheek but I already feel more pain. I called him (Dr. Choi) right away to complain. I knew it was going to be really bad because I feel pain inside my mouth already and I am supposed to be still numb. Dr. Choi REFUSED to believe me because the numbing should last up to about 4 or 5 hours. He just gave me a prescription for a stronger pain reliever and instructed me to call him on Monday if I still have pains. It didn't take that long as on that night, I was already in severe pain - tried calling him SEVERAL TIMES BUT HE NEVER PICKED UP!!!!! No sleep for me due to severe pain. Saturday morning, it is visible already that there is some swelling in my face and luckily, he finally spoke to him when I called in the morning - around 8 AM. I LITERALLY BEGGED HIM to give me some antibiotics for the infection. So he called the local Walgreens and told them that I am going to pick up some Penicillin as soon as they open at 10 AM. Despite the antibiotics, my face continued to be swollen through Sunday and I ballooned to almost half of my face. By Monday, my wife and I decided to go to Hoag Urgent Care, hoping to get some stronger antibiotics. But when the doctor saw me and heard my story, she immediately told me to RUN to the emergency because it is badly swollen - This time it grew even further that I could feel it on the other side of my face. She also added that if that continued, it could close my airway and therefore would not be able to breathe. That's the reason she wanted me to head to the emergency. I had to stay in Hoag Hospital for 6 days! Had to go to 2 surgeries, 1 is to extract the bad tooth and 2nd is to drain the pus. The doctor said that my DENTIST SHOULD HAVE NOT performed that "partial root canal" because I was in pain. He should have given me the antibiotics first until the infection is gone. The problem was when he drilled into my tooth, the infection went in! One more thing - The doctor said that I did not even need to have the implant. Remember, he decided to "SAVE" the tooth because I am not ready financially for the implant. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DOCTOR!!!!! He just going to sell you an implant even if you don't really need it. I am considering suing this dentist for malpractice! read more

I've been coming to this office since 2011 for all my dental needs. I've gotten my wisdom teeth removed, cavities filled, veneers put in, and of course regular cleanings. Dr. Choi and his staff are great and cover all the bases. He is a skilled specialist with years and years of experience. I don't ever feel like I'm being pushed for anything I don't need; i'm not being up-sold and my health is the priority. The front office is super helpful and friendly. Both Angie and Donna will take care of you and answer all your questions. Angie's been there forever so she knows everything. The hygienist, Anya, will adapt the cleaning sessions to the peculiarities of my mouth, like being extra delicate to my receding gum areas. I'v installed 8 implants by Dr. Choi about 2 years ago. My smile, designed by Dr. Choi did not last for long. In abouut 2 years one of my crowns got wobbly. Here I figured out, that Dr. Choi doesn not provide guaranty for his job, unless you pay yearly fees.On top of your expences! I paid it and got my crown tightened. In 6 month after that, TWO of my crowns (one just tightened 6 month ago) got wobbly. It happens when I am out of State and have paid for my 2 week cruise, just 1 day before sheep departure. Being instructed by Mr. Choi, that in case of looseness of crown tooth should be treated promptly or... I have had to cancel by trip in favore of dental emergency. On top of cost of repaire, I lost $2000 for me me and another $2000 for my girlfriend itenerary. I do not feel like to call Mr. Choi as Doctor anymore. I still have 6 of 8 implants, which promiss me a lot of troubles if all 6 will not be redisigned by real Doctor. Smile by Mr, Choi desighn got changed on grimace of fear. It's undestandable, that low quality work is in a way a Poison Pills, which brings "service fees" and double a book price of Mr. Choi work, I'v forgive first fault of Mr. Choi ("Forgive your enemies and will be forgiven") but then it occured in my mind that doing that I'm hurting plenty of patients, who might trust Mr. Choi, and considered sharing my experience. read more
