I picked this place to celebrate my mom's birthday due to proximity to home and craving for tacos. It's a small restaurant and easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. The staff was really friendly, especially the younger waitress. She had blond hair and was so nice! Made us feel welcome as soon as we stepped in. We were seated by the booth-like corner but it wasn't the cleanest and had some wet stain on one of the cushions. Moved to the larger wood table and that was much better. Quintessential bar and rustic yet grungy vibes, the service was fast and efficient. The food was SO good. They really know how to do tacos here and you can't go wrong with classic al pastor, chicken and fish. The sandwich was good too. As with everything these days, it's not cheap tacos. The prices can add up but the experience and food was great. To top it off, the waitress knew we were celebrating my mom's birthday and put in a special, complimentary order of churros for her. Menu is limited and we had to wait a substantial time for our orders. Actually it took the server a long time to even take our orders. It was weird seeing the place was not super busy. I gave this place 5 stars for two reasons, Food & Service! I was in New York for a few days and decided to meet up with family here on Saturday afternoon. This place is located right in the center of other great restaurants and bars. I approached the seating hostess to see if there was any room for a family of 5, unfortunately the tables were reserved. However, she was nice enough to take my number in case there were any cancellations. 10 minutes later I received a text that a table was available for me. SWEET! My family and I all came over and were seated outside in one of their large tables. If you love people watching, this is a great spot. The waitress quickly came over with waters for everyone, I appreciated that. She then immediately took our drink orders while we looked at the menu. Our drinks came out quickly and we were able to immediately order. I love when service is efficient! We ordered their Margaritas, Cucumber Margaritas & Bloody Maria. The drinks did not disappoint! Our food order started coming out literally within 20 minutes. The waitress came around often. We ordered round after round and the drinks continued to be mixed just right! Pro tip: ordered the eggs scrambled and mixed in and damn every bit was packed with flavor, spice and deliciousness. It was the perfect amount of saucy and the steak was delicious - although pricey I was pretty full for most of the day. Drinks: Had the strawberry margarita, came with house made Tajín on the rim and chunky pieces of strawberry in the drink, good flavor. Service: We had some miscommunications on the order but they were able to remedy. Ambiance: Cute, cozy, cool with outdoor seating available. We enjoyed this restaurant on a Tuesday night. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor tables were a bit cramped. Our group of six sat at a high top with barstool seating and definitely would've preferred more space. The table was shared with another party and bar seating was directly behind us so it was a tight squeeze, but we made it work. They don't have table hooks for personal items, but they do have hooks on the walls where you can hang coats and purses. We shared guacamole and chips for the table. They top their guacamole with peanuts. The nuts were bright red, but didn't add much flavor for the dip. The avocado was chunky and fresh. For my main, I had the cauliflower tacos. The cauliflower was roasted, but I would've preferred a bit more of a charred texture. Still, it paired well with the onions and other toppings. Overall, it was tasty. My friends also enjoyed the chicken and fish tacos. You can specify a two or three count for all of the taco orders. To drink, I had the habanero grapefruit margarita. The habanero infused tequila is quite spicy so they invite you to sample it before ordering. I ended up asking for half spicy, half plain but I wish I went all in because the drink was pretty mild. It was garnished with fresh grapefruit which I enjoyed. For large parties, they automatically add gratuity. read more

I wish I could give 2.5 stars but there were a few things that were good about this spot - the host was kind enough to accommodate our party of 8 very quickly on a nice Saturday afternoon. The cocktails were also delicious and there was great variety, I got the hibiscus margarita but definitely think the others were better. The chips they had were AMAZING and the guacamole paired so well with it. The entrees however and service that followed was not great. We ordered enchiladas, chilaquiles and the Benedict. This took almost an hour to come out and when it was served to us, the server gave us enchiladas stating they were chilaquiles and that we had ordered in fact the enchiladas. It continued to get messed up and after a few minutes the server who took our order came to apologize. I found myself at Barrio Chino for my work holiday dinner. As the resident Yelp Elite in my department, I was asked to find a place for us to celebrate the season - my only limitations being that it wasn't Italian (since we had that last year), and it wasn't a place I had been to before. Taking those factors into consideration and the fact that we were a party of 10, I did some exploring and found BC. The menu, good reviews, and the fact that they could accommodate our party size sold it for me - so off we went. Located in the Lower East Side, Barrio Chino primarily serves up Mexican fare. Like many restaurants in the area, it's not large - the bar in the back serves as a focal point with a few tables scattered throughout the space. We were seated at a long high top table in the middle of the dining room which I figure allows them to easily take reservations for large groups. The aesthetics are super casual - exposed brick, worn accents, and casual music playing in the background. The menu has a good selection of apps, tacos, soups, salads, entrees, and drinks. We decided to start with drinks - I had one of their tequila-based craft cocktails which was quite good, strong but tasty. For round 2 I had a watermelon margarita which was tasty as well. For food, we started with some apps to share - chips with salsa and guac, tuna tartare, cauliflower tacos, and two types of quesadillas - cheese and chorizo. Everything was tasty - the real standout for me was the chips as they were kinda thick and really crispy mmmm. For my main I decided on the enchiladas mole which were stuffed with shredded chicken, queso fresco, crema Mexicana, onions, and lettuce. I thought it was really good - I could tell the ingredients were fresh and it had great flavor. The dish was a little sauce heavy, but I didn't mind too much since it had great flavor. Black beans were served on the side but they were atypical in the fact that they were pureed - an interesting take, not sure how I felt about that but I ate them so there's that. Service was great - everyone was super friendly, the food came out at a good pace (and each course all at once which I appreciated), and overall I really felt we were taken care of. It actually hurts me to see so many great reviews for Barrio Chino. Perhaps things have changed over the years, but I found this place to be incredibly mid and their prices to be unbearable. I came on a Tuesday night and it was moderately busy, but we didn't need a reservation. We were seated at a high top table which I never really like when you have to share it with multiple parties. The waitress here was incredibly nice, I wish I remembered her name! I got a spicy watermelon margarita which tasted fine. It wasn't groundbreaking but was up to the standard I'd expect. I also left fairly tipsy off one drink so they are generous in that sense! Unfortunately, my margarita and 2 tacos were the same price. $8 per taco !!!! These are not full tacos, they are not big, they are incredibly normal in size. I have been ruminating over this for two weeks since I visited. How can a taco be $8 USD? On top of that, how does it taste so incredibly below average? There are a plethora of incredible taco spots in NYC. I simply could not in good faith recommend this to a friend or family member visiting. Maybe I'm just not in the right tax bracket to enjoy it, but I'd rather go to a cheaper place with better quality even if the lighting isn't as vibey, every single time. read more

The ceviche is a hard pass. No flavor and they charged us an extra 1.50 for two extra large chips. Not the price but the principal. Stumbled upon this place late, near 11p. The server Nancy came in right away. Super chill, attentive, personable, asked me what I liked, and each of her suggestions blew me away. I love the drinks, and I especially love their smoky shrimp, avocado-lime puree, and tostada. I learned that it was a cinco de mayo special that become a menu staple, and I'd eat that every time. My partner and I were in the area for a comedy show and stumbled onto Barrio Chino late Wednesday night. We walked in and were met with a friendly face and we were able to sit right away. For drinks I ordered the Hibiscus margarita and it tasted great and they didn't skimp on the tequila. Now for the star of the night. I had the Tuna Tostada and it was delicious--it was tossed in a slightly spicy marinade with a delicious creamy citrus sauce on the base and topped with cabbage, cilantro and sesame seeds. It was fresh and had so much flavor. The carnitas tacos were also yummy. In terms of ambiance, it was lights dimmed, candle light with a super cute aesthetic. Definitely a date night spot. I also appreciated that they played actual Spanish music and not top forty. Overall great experience would def come back. read more

I came here with my sisters and a couple of my sisters' friends for her birthday & we were seated outside. Service was a bit slow but the waitstaff was very friendly and we got our drinks in - I ordered their strawberry margarita and it was very pretty and delicious :) I also ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and their sopa de pollo which is their chicken soup. The fish tacos come in either 2 or 3 and are pretty good but it was quite messy because of the sauce. They have a decent amount of fish inside the taco & they add mango slices on top which make it very refreshing! The only part of my meal I didn't like was my soup. It looked very vibrant and tasty & smelled amazing however it was incredibly salty! I wouldn't get it again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I wasn't able to finish the broth but since I paid for it, I ate the leftover chicken and veggies inside the soup. I would recommend this place since my sister ordered their steak & eggs which was very delicious & the steak was very tender :) it's a good portion size for 1 person! Situated on a vibrant street which so much life, other food, bakeries, etc. While there was only one lady doing bar and service, she was exceptional and made sure our table was looked after. The food was remarkable, well portioned, great flavors. I personally hate going to Mexican style restaurants that dump a huge dish on you smothered in sauce and cheese without good flavor. Barrio Chino is an artisanal Mexican restaurant that opened in Manhattan, New York in July 2003. It is currently managed by Fidel Vazquez. It is located in a hub for several bars and restaurants centered around the intersection of Broome Street and Orchard Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side. It is also located not far form 'Chinatown', which is what 'Barrio Chino' means in Spanish. They serve several Mexican classic dishes such as enchiladas, tacos, sandwiches, salads and appetizers. They also serve Mexican-style brunch on the weekends and are very well known for their list of creative craft cocktails which include margaritas and mojitos. My wife and I visited Barrio Chino for the first time recently. We were in NYC to celebrate my sister-in-law's 30th birthday. The neighborhood is full of great restaurants and bars. Barrio Chino is tiny, but their food looked amazing; we grabbed some tables on the sidewalk. We started off with some craft cocktails. My sister-in-law had an elderflower margarita, my wife ordered a watermelon margarita, and I ordered a habanero grapefruit margarita. Our server said, "I hope that you like spicy drinks. The habanero grapefruit margarita is VERY hot." We all enjoyed our drinks, and my margarita was not too spicy for me. For appetizers, we ordered guacamole and salsa with tortilla chips for the table; excellent guacamole! For entrees, my wife and sister-in-law both ordered the Enchiladas de Mole and I ordered the Bistek de la Casa. The enchiladas were very flavorful and my steak was cooked to my liking.
