All the tacos we ordered, which included chicken, mushroom, and carnitas, were delicious and with generous fall-out-when-you-pick-it-up levels of filling. CHips and guac and salsa were more basic, nothing to write home about, but did not in any way regret them. It fell down on the drinks, just a little. The HH margarita specials were all a little off. A little too sour, a little too bland, just never quite perfect (yes, I did try multiple, I'm a reviewer doing reviews, it was research, you don't get to judge). Came here as we were heading to see the phantom of the opera at the Orpheum. I remember going to Barrio in St. Paul a long time ago so I was excited to try it again. The service was amazing and our waiter was very friendly and helpful. The other staff help a lot as well and bring food out as it comes so you are always being seen to. Ambiance is a little cramped on the main floor, but they have a beautiful bar and the typical fun downtown leisure hangout. The food was ok. The burrito was nothing to wrote home about. I liked that it was grilled and all, but honestly prefer chipotle by a wide margin. About a 2. The yucas and meatballs were amazing and I was really glad we took the suggestion and ordered them. 4 to 5 The black beans were ehh and nothing really special and a little dry I would not recommend. I love black beans and was a bit disappointed. 1 to 2. The tacos were a hit and if I go again I would definitely lean towards the tacos, chips, and apps. 4 The beet salad was ok but expected a little more for the price. Service was the issue. But food was great. First, our waiter didn't even seem to want to be there. He didn't know what Jarritos flavor they had. We put in an appetizer and then some tacos and a plate of shrimp. One of the tacos came out first. We asked for the appetizer. We tried to send back the taco but after it left another waitress showed up with it and said that's how they do things - food comes out when it's ready. I get it. Tapas is tapas. But then don't offer appetizers as a course. Just call them another small plate and we'll take our chances. We never saw the waiter again until we had to ask for the check. No checking for drinks (I wanted one). This is a nice place with good service but the food is just ok. I tried the quesadillas and I can say edible but would not order again. Just kinda bland to be honest. Most of our party had the tacos which were very small so be sure to order several. We also had a large party and they put one bowl of chips which were gone in about 3 seconds and they didn't seem to recognize the size of our group. This has always been my go to spot for my birthday during the Jackalope Art Festival! The food has always been really fresh and hits the spot for me. Usually the service is pretty good but this time around I felt like the servers we had were either very new or just didn't care much. The server that went to sit us at a table stopped cleaning it in the middle of sitting us to sit another table. It took forever for us to get our drinks as well. I was surprised there wasn't a bartender scheduled on a Sunday and it was the servers making the drinks. Our food was all pretty good but it was disappointing that the ceviche has changed and isn't as citrus forward as it's been in the past. Came here before going to see a show at the Minnesota orchestra nearby! We reserved ahead of time for a group of 5 and were able to get seated quickly which was nice. I'm vegan and got the quinoa bowl which was good! I felt the tacos were very small for the price from seeing them for other people. They do however have fun margarita flavors such as pomegranate which was great! Stopped by Barrio after checking into our Airbnb in Minneapolis and it was a great start to the trip. Went around 12-1pm on a Friday bustling but easy to get a seat at the bar. Tacos were really good, margaritas were solid, and the bartender was awesome. For downtown Minneapolis, this is definitely one of the better Mexican spots. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures, but I vividly remember that when my friends and I went there for a celebration, and I ordered the roasted beet salad, I had concluded that it was sadly the worst beet salad I have ever had. I ended up not finishing it which almost never happens to me. There was so much arugula to the point that the beets pieces were almost completely missing. And out of the few pieces that I found, only about two or three pieces tasted like fresh beets pieces. When I had my first bite, I thought I was biting into a piece of radish. It contained a weird flavor and was extremely hard to chew. Other pieces either had the same weird flavor or no flavor at all. Because there weren't enough beets pieces, the goat cheese as a result was very overwhelming. The orange slices were sloppily given and didn't contribute much to the dish. Both the serrano chile and the honey peanuts provided a good contrasting flavor and texture for the dish, but weren't enough to save it. I scrambles for those two ingredients and enjoyed eating those, but had to leave the rest of the arugula behind. I wish I had taken a picture, because even when the salad was presented to me, I could see no beets. read more

The space is really nice and feels cozy. They have several different set ups for seating for small and large parties. They have a pretty big happy hour menu. The food was good. The fish taco was a bit fishy tasting. The margarita was disappointing, the mix tasted chemically. The service was good, not overly attentive, but got all of our needs meet. This is a good place to catch a meal before an event downtown. I'd suggest making a reservation for a larger party, we saw several 5+ parties turned away. read more

They serve tapas style, which is fine, but there was nothing that sounded particularly appetizing for dinner. I decided on 3 tacos - mahi mahi, steak, and pork belly, and they were probably about 3 bites each with store bought tortillas. The meat was average, but scant, in all of them but the tortillas fell apart and for $6 each I would expect better. Drinks were around $15 each. Stopped by Barrio for lunch. Glad we made reservations as they were quite busy. Appreciated the outdoor seating, especially on a nice day. Despite having a good lunch special (guac, chips, and 2 tacos [couldn't choose as it was special] for $14), I opted to order a la cart. Shared the house-made guacamole, which came with freshly made chips and ancho-tomatillo salsa, and fried Yucatan, which came with a chimichurri and lemon aioli sauce. Both were plentiful for sharing. Guac was good, but definitely could have used more salt & pepper. The ssalsa had a nice kick to it, which I enjoyed. Yucatan fries also good - crispy and not oily. Couldn't eat too many though as they were on the heavier side. For my main meal, I got two tacos - mahi mahi and carnitas. I enjoyed both, but the carnitas a little more as it had more flavor to it. I'm from California so I'm spoiled with great Mexican food but this place was not bad. I went with a party of 8 and the place was busy so service was very slow. BUT the server was nice. Each dish is like tapas style so it's easy to share with others. I loved the guacamole! It was paired very well with the crunchy tortilla chips. The chicken enchiladas were ok, there was a certain kick missing but they were good. I came in on a Friday with my family and we were seated right away with a reservation. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating with a beautiful bar right in the center. I tried one of their spicy margs which was delicious as well as the mahi mahi taco and ahi tuna taco. I loved both of the tacos I had and especially loved the crispy shell on the ahi tuna taco! The side of yuca fries were also really crisp and delicious! Chile de ancho steak burrito was alright, I was expecting well marinated steak however I couldn't really taste the chili de ancho sauce. The sauce was also served with tortilla chips and was not spicy at all. Tasted like a mild spice ketchup. The real star of the show was the enter the dragon drink. This had habanero pepper inside with passion fruit. The pair was a spicy fruity delight with tequila. Truly delicious. Ambiance of this place is very eye-catching. It definitely has a unique touch to its design from the doors, to the tequila wall and all of the wall pieces. Sauces were not spicy at all, which was a turn off. Burritos were kind of basic, nothing out of the ordinary. The drinks were really good though. I love their tequila selection, which can be found in the brown menu booklet. I got the diamente pepino drink and it was really refreshing and made my whole night. A very well blended cucumber concoction that fits any mood , any occasion. A must have. Enter the dragon - sweet and salty with a spicy kick at the end that stays in the back of your throat but it's so good. The citrus base is a rockstar addition that ties everything well. Chicken plate - habanero sauce is the bomb.com Rice is underwhelming. If I was blind folded I would not know it was cilantro rice. Beans were undercooked and hard, but the cabbage slaw was really good. Yucca fries - fried to perfection. A heavenly combo with the aeoli sauce Chile de árbol steak burrito - wish there was more spice with the meat as described on menu and the red salsa that comes with it taste like ketchup. We placed our order -- just a small bite to eat since we had an event later that evening. We shared a chicken burrito and ordered chips and salsa. When the burrito arrived, it looked great, but once we cut into it, it wasn't fully warm in the center. Some friends and I made a reservation at barrio for a birthday dinner over the weekend. Since it's downtown, we expected it to be busier but it was surprisingly quiet, probably because it was a Sunday night (not that we minded!). Service was incredible, and I cannot speak highly enough about our server! She was so friendly and helpful with giving lots of recommendations on what to order. For food, we started with a few apps: queso fundito, chips and guac, and the salsas. The salsa selection was good, but nothing spectacular, as was the guac. However, we did love the chips! They were made in house and so crispy. The queso was a hit or miss with our table, some loved the flavor and others didn't love the texture (it was definitely thicker, more like a grilled piece of cheese instead of a sauce). The fried yuca we shared was or favorite small plate! I got a steak burrito and it was delicious and a very large portion! I ate half and took the other half as leftovers. A few girl friends and I went to Barrio on a Sunday night to celebrate one of their birthdays! The restaurant itself has a very cool & edgy feel, which I could see being more busy on a Friday or Saturday night - but this Sunday the place only had 2-3 other small groups/individuals there. Our server was fabulous, I wish I got her name! She was super upbeat, helpful and gave great recommendations- she even split our check/apps 7 ways. I appreciated that she explained to us beforehand that everything comes out as it's ready - so anything we're not sharing we will have to eat at different times. Personally, I don't really love the concept since we all felt weird eating at different times in a big group - we all ended up kind of nibbling until the everyone got their food. I'm currently on an N/A drink kick and appreciate when restaurants offer them! I tried the Strawberry Mint Spritz, and it was delicious. For being just muddled strawberries, soda water, lemon and mint, this was very flavorful and sweet. I would definitely order again (and attempt to recreate at home). We ordered one of each of the apps to share with the table - Chips & Salsa, Guac and Queso. The salsa and guac wasn't anything too special, but it was yummy! The chips are homemade too which is a plus - but beware they charge you if you get another bowl of chips. I personally didn't like the Queso - it was more like just melted cheese than a creamy mixed queso - it got gloopy and had oil separation really quickly. Once it hit the plate it really started to solidify - I had issues with that consistency but the rest of the group liked it. For my main dish I got the Sugarcane Skewered Shrimp - this was delicious! I loved the charred flavor on the shrimp, plus the marinade was very flavorful. However, I did think the $16 price was a little steep for a small plate that didn't come with rice or any sort of side. Overall, I don't think Barrio is anything too special for the price, but it's definitely a fun try! read more

Horrible service, food just ok. My husband and I (just the two of us) each ordered different things, not small plates of the same thing. My food came out way before my husband's. We asked the waitress and she was like, "well, this is tapas and we can't control when things come out." Very rude. I would get it a bit more if we were a larger group and/or if we had ordered multiple tapas courses to share.
