I stopped by Taberna for happy hour, hoping to snag some good taco deals, but ended up being the complete opposite. Their taco menu listed them at $5, but the happy hour price was $5.50, which had me confused. When I asked the server what the actual happy hour deal was, she didn't really give a clear explanation of the deals for tacos, but was able to give a better explanation for their drinks and apps. I ended up skipping the "deal" altogether and ordered the guacamole + queso combo off the regular menu (which somehow was a better value than happy hour as well). The dips were fine, but the chips were stale and crumbly, the kind that break just from looking at them. For my entrée, I tried the birria tacos, but they were greasy and had way more cheese than meat. Definitely not what I am used to. All in all, this was my first and last visit. I have had 2 very different experiences here. The first time I chose to get the tacos which were delicious, I love their creative fusion tacos and the variety you can get. The second time I was just there for appetizers and just got the chicken wings. The wings were pretty dry, and the honey-chipotle sauce was not very good in my opinion. The food is generally street tacos, and they do a good job at pulling a variety of tastes together. The staff is attentive, and service is quick. They have a nice patio, albeit hovering over a busy street corner near Lake Bde Maka Ska - guess that makes the "street taco" part more authentic. I had a fish and a pork taco. A fellow Yelp Elite told me about Taberna & how they have a good $2.99 taco deal on Tuesday's. I got chicken tacos and Mexican fries. I believe they promote being on the authentic side but it was more Tex-mex/Americanized flavor wise, wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping. Lunchtime treat and since I had eaten a light breakfast, this ended up being a big lunch. I went for the three taco combo and looking back, two would have been enough. Fish, pork belly and carne asada. Huge portions and well topped. And delicious. Served with both rice and Taberna elote (Mexican street corn), this was a large meal. Thoroughly enjoyed it, sitting at the bar and having a great conversation with the bartender who kept my soda refilled. Five stars for a great lunch. Parking can be a challenge. Denisse was a wonderful server, very friendly, funny, and bubbly. Making our experience a little bit better because it was not the best. This location is tex-mex style, and the prices are not bad. There is a free parking lot located to the right of the restaurant. The music was very loud, and all the food came out of the kitchen at once. However, we purchased the tacos for two combo but did not get our tres leche cake and our server didn't mention anything to us. Maybe it's not offered anymore? If so the menu should be updated. The pastor tacos didn't come with pineapple so that was disappointing for me, my husband prefers no pineapple so he didn't mind. Rice and beans were a bit bland but the Mexican fries were good. Casual spot for tasty Mexican bites. Went with a group and ordered the meal for 4 which was a great deal. 12 tacos (your choice), 4 elotes, and large bowls of rice and beans for $55. If you just order 12 tacos alone, that's almost $60 so this was a great value. The carnitas, shrimp and al pastor tacos were the favorites. As a typically non-meat eater I would love to see some black bean tacos and less watery side of beans with less smokey meat flavor. The cauliflower taco is a little chewy and difficult to eat so I usually go for cheese curds or french fries to share with friends. Pairs perfectly with the Taberna Margarita, a deliciously premixed, always perfect, margarita. Happy hour and margarita Mondays are the way to go for sure. I've been here twice and I'll definitely return. It's friendly and spacious and the food has mostly been good. Both times I've gotten the 3-taco combo, and I think that's a good deal. You get three street tacos with doubled-up soft corn tortillas, plus mexican rice and an elote. I don't see elotes too often, so it's very cool that it's included in that combo. The service has been very fast and professional, although both times I've come, I've had to wait a few minutes for anyone to appear at the host station. This is in the same spot as the classic burger joint Porky's, which my mom has fond memories of from her childhood. And to honor that, they have Porky's Onion Rings on the menu, using the same recipe that my mom loved decades ago. My mom was delighted when she sunk her teeth into hers; she is certain that they are the same old onion rings! Unfortunately, the first time we came, they had run out of them. That was the main draw for us, so we were very disappointed. Also, this last time, the rice that came with my combo was not fresh. It seemed like it had been under a heat lamp for a while. But my tacos were good and my mom also liked her quesadilla. NOTE: Be assured there IS parking! It might not be obvious, but if you turn in to the right of the building, many of those spaces are posted as exclusive to Taberna customers. I have come here before and got takeout and was underwhelmed. Very meh. However, we brought the family here this week and had a great experience. It was Taco Tuesday and tacos are cheaper. I got 2 pastor tacos and my wife got pastor and carnitas. We also got nachos. Maybe it is the walk home that ruins things, but sitting in the restaurant this week, the food was so much better. Juicy and tender meat, great tortillas, and the nachos were also very good. I have honestly never ordered something not on the Happy Hour menu. Ambiance is a general sports bar vibe and is varying degrees of busy - the service can also be either strapped and you see them twice, or very attentive with a few visits.
