This place was adorable. It's inside an older house, but it's renovated and cozy with a nice size patio. The drinks were amazing and strong and it didn't take much to feel a buzz. I got the enchilada and they were just good. I got verde sauce with chicken for my enchiladas and I wish it was more saucy or had cheese. It was a little dry on the inside. The rice and beans were good, but I wish the refried beans were mashed. It makes all the difference. Overall, our server was super nice and asked how we were doing multiple times, and the restaurant was good. Definitely not the best Mexican in town but it's a reliable place. If you love maximalist holiday decorations and festivity, Nico's is for you! It's an adorable Victorian house converted into a Mexican restaurant, and every inch of the place was covered in Halloween-themed decor. They even had a Halloween-themed drink menu and mugs. They tend to be busy on Saturday nights. We got in without a reservation but I think we got lucky; I recommend reserving a table and getting there slightly early because parking is limited. Due to small interior, it did get quite loud. It didn't help that the table next to us was practically screaming. Between the noise and the intense decor, it got pretty overwhelming. The food was tasty. It's not the best Mexican food I have had, but it was a step above your average Mexican fare in terms of freshness and flavor. read more

I haven't been to Nico's in a handful of years and unfortunately it is not what I remembered. The queso had little to no flavor and the taco meat felt like it was preprepared and sitting under the warmer for an extended period of time. The pastor did have a good flavor to it and I will say the chips were great, along with the salsa verde. Service was slow and prices are a little steep for what you get. It also did get fairly loud at times due to the space. The restaurant was decorated for halloween which gave it a spooky atmosphere that was fun. It went from a 2 to a 4 after we ate! The restaurant is in a literal house! I can't decide if it was cool or just a little odd haha. It's a bit stuffy and acoustics are horrible (very loud). The water they provided was very warm, too. However! The margaritas were perfect. We had a salsa flight and they were all delicious - best chips I've had in a while too, almost flakey! Nico's was the PERFECT festive spot to grab a bite to eat before we went to The Grinch at Children's Theater. It was magical and fun for our whole family, got us in the Christmas spirit even in November. It's fun from the moment you pull up, decorated on the outside with lots of Christmas lights. We were lucky enough to park right on the street out front. We were seated in an upstairs area. There was a large group that was standing around having happy hour that was very loud, they did leave halfway through our meal thank goodness. We ordered festive margaritas which came in Christmas mugs. We got elote and chips and queso, both good. We split an order of chorizo nachos which was my favorite food item we ordered, so good. Only downside the chips did get very soggy by the end. I had the birria tacos which weren't my favorite. My husband got street tacos, the carnitas being the best. Have visted the location in St. Paul often, but after driving by a few weeks ago and seeing all the holiday decor, decided to bop in with some friends to enjoy a post-holiday meal. The holiday decor was super fun. Each room had a different color theme going on. Service was friendly. The music playing was so loud we couldn't hear our server, so we asked for it to be turned down. They obliged quickly, which was nice. Food is good. I like that they have several options for fillings of all your favorite Mexican fare. I got tinga enchiladas this past go-round and was not disappointed. Only let down is I always ask for no beans and they always seem to make it on my plate. Only downfall here is that they are put together in a bowl, so a little more difficult to just separate them. They also had some fun holiday cocktails when we visited. Went here on a weekday night. It was pretty packed. I've been before in the warmer months & have sat inside & outside but never upstairs. We were told on the main level that they were only seating people who had reservations but we could try upstairs. Upstairs is mostly a bar area. Also packed but they had a patio that they closed in & had a "heater". We ended up only finding a table on the upstairs patio. It was a bit cold. The heater was set to 70, would come on every 20 minutes or so & blow cold air for about 5 minutes making it a bit colder. Service was pretty slow but we knew they were busy. We often felt like they forgot about us on the patio. We ordered a round of drinks & food. I ordered nachos w/ chicken. They were okay. Definitely too much chips not enough toppings. I'd probably stick to tacos. They forgot a part of my moms order and when they came back way later too check she was already almost done with her food & reminded them. They did comp it for her. The drinks were from a holiday specialty menu & came in cute cups. They were okay tasting. We all ordered different drinks but they all kind of tasted the same. Prices are a bit spendy. Nico's always has such fun decor! We went during Halloween season this time around, but they also decorate for Christmas! They have decorations all around the restaurant, both inside and out! They also have a holiday drink menu (with both cocktails and mocktails), and drinks come in festive cups! They have a good variety of options and all the drinks we tried were delicious! The house made chips were perfect! They were thin, crispy, and light and used just the right amount of salt. The corn salsa was decent, although probably could've used a little more onion and tomatoes. The uruapan guacamole was listed on the menu as a guacamole but listed online as a pico de gallo. I would say it's essentially a pico with avocado chunks than a guacamole, but I would still order it again since the flavor was really good. I did the veggie tacos and mixed mushroom tacos as a taco plate (which adds rice and beans). The tacos have a generous amount of filling. The veggie taco is slightly sweet while the mushroom taco has more of an umami flavor. Both are delicious, but I prefer the mushroom one! We live in SW Minneapolis and come to Nico's fairly regularly but tonight, from beginning to end, was a disappointing and frustrating experience. The host, who also did double duty as a bartender, and all the servers were surly and inattentive. We waited needlessly long to place our orders and at meal's end, took us forever to get a check. And the worst part about it was the server, after ignoring us all evening, blamed the lousy service on the fact that Mayor Frey, sitting at the bar unobtrusively, was in the restaurant. In the Twin Cities, we're fortunate to have quite a few excellent places that serve food just like youd get at Nico's. I'd consider trying them. read more

Three friends and I were looking to enjoy a dinner together on a week night. I've been here a few times before and have always had a positive experience and enjoyed their food. We got there at 6, were sat at a table right away and greeted not long after for our drink orders. The waitress was friendly and had several recommendations, not to mention she was quick with her service as well. To start we ordered the salsa flight, the cool part is there's roughly eight salsas you can pick from. We picked the Augacate, Zona Rosa and Verde Serrano. The Verde Serrano is your typical light, non spicy green salsa and gets the job done. The Zona Rosa was a departure from the norm as its main ingredient is roasted pumpkin seeds! This was smoky and rich, and was my 2nd favorite of the three. My favorite and the spiciest (no, that's not a coincidence) was the Aguacate. This salsa is mixed with avocado and whipped into a puree, very viscous and blasts your mouth with flavor. The Flautas Verdes was slightly underwhelming. I didn't know what to expect when I got this dish. My best way of describing it is a crispy fried enchilada, filled with spicy shredded chipotle chicken (protein is up to the customer, this is what I chose). It was served in a pool of salsa verde, topped with cotija cheese, pico de gallo and shredded lettuce. It wasn't bad, it had a lot of citrusy notes and was good enough. I just expected better from Nico's as I have been there before and loved what I ordered. The ambience was incredible here as well, we were sat next to a fireplace and there was all sorts of Latin American pottery and art lining the walls. Overall I had a great experience, got great service but was slightly let down by my entree. I will be back undoubtedly to try more! read more

What a fun festive spot with delicious food! As seen on instagram, we came here for the seasonal decor and festive cocktails and Nico's didn't disappoint! The entire inside and outside was decked out for Christmas, as well as the music, and cocktails! We started with a Mistletoe Mama margarita, which was a strawberry basil margarita, served in a cutie gingerbread lady mug. 10/10 for taste, 15/10 for cuteness! The birria tacos were top notch! I've never had lamb birria before, but if you're looking to branch out of the box, these are a must try! I added a side of rice which was also delicious, fluffy and not dry! I was upset to hear that they had run out of queso at 5:30pm on a Monday night and that I ordered a holiday mocktail but those don't come in the fun holiday glasses like the margaritas do. However, chips and pico was good and I got a steak quesadilla to go which was delicious. I didn't know you could make reservations but we only waited about 20 minutes for a party of 4. Inside there are a ton of decorations for the holiday and fun themed drinks that come in cool mugs/glasses. Food wise we ordered a little bit of everything. As a low carb girly I didn't see a ton of options, I ended up going with the carne asada and it was really good. The tortillas on the other hand tasted and smelled fishy. We didn't eat a single one. The other miss of the night was the chips and salsa, the chips were so incredibly salty- as a group of four we didn't even make it through half, and despite the waiter telling us the queso wasn't spicy it had a kick to it. They brought our drinks back to us within 5 minutes too! I had the 'Home alone on Hennepin' and my friend ordered the 'Dirty snowball'. First of all I loved how creative the holiday drink menu was!! I had a coupon for here so we went to try it out on a Friday evening and there was no wait without a reservation. The vibes inside are immaculate and it's decorated to the max for Christmas! The mocktail even came in a gingerbread mug. Our server was really nice and helped out with suggestions. The pastor taco was really good and the carnitas was ok. Nico's taco has great food, an awesome patio (both up and down stairs), and great service. It's a little pricey, but can be worth it. FOOD: I love their mixed greens salad and I like to add some protein to it. I've order the chicken tinga, Al pastor, and steak. My favorites are the chicken and the steak. The proteins are quite crumbled (most likely because their are also used in the tacos) and that's not my favorite but they are very flavorful. And the salad itself is quite good with multiple vegetables enhancing the flavor. Their margaritas are also always a nice addition to the meal. AMBIANCE: we love their patio-- upstairs or downstairs. Inside is nice too but can't go wrong being outside during the warm seasons. PARKING: there is typically street parking nearby or neighborhood parking a short walk away. SERVICE: always friendly. I've always been a fan of Nico's, and my last visit there once again was awesome. I usually get Nico's tacos (as they are a taco bar lol) but this time I branched out and went for their burrito. UMMM yeah I'm upset I didn't try it earlier. It was soooo good. Full of ingredients, very fresh, and the perfect amount of spicy. Chef's kiss. I, of course, also ordered one of their traditional margs. I can't say no to a margarita, but especially not Nico's. They're some of the best margs in the cities (in my opinion). The staff were AWESOME when I visited. The place was absolutely packed (it was that one 80 degree afternoon in April and everyone was escaping their homes lol), but they still managed to serve us quickly and remain attentive. It was also my friend's birthday, and when I asked the waiter if they did anything for birthdays (I'm sorry I had to), the bartender heard and poured her a free tequila shot! He even let her pick the type of tequila!!! She was jazzed about that, to say the least. It made our evening very fun. I love the lengua tacos and nachos here. The carnitas is another good meat option. The other tacos are tasty but to me, I will stick with tongue. Nothing hits quite the same. The salsas are all amazing. The serrano is the spiciest they have I think so that is my go to. I was pleasantly surprised by the salsa rosa which is made with pepitas (pumpkin seeds). I enjoy sitting out on the upper or lower patios when the weather is nice. The only con I'll say is the bartender who I've seen there the last couple times is not very approachable. Kinda bad vibes tbh. Our waiters have been decent and the most recent guy was one of the best servers I've had in a while. Overall service is hit or miss I'd say still. While I've rated this a 4 star, I wish to point out it's actually 3.5 stars. There were a few good hits but some bad misses too here. We are in town for 2 nights and wanted to check this place out so got here. FANTASTIC vibe (even though, last night it wasn't super crowded which is great but it was probably because it was a cold night). We ordered a bunch of different things. Let's get the good out of the way first. The Enchilada Rojo was FANTASTIC. It had a great robust flavor (could be more robust though) and a great portion overall. What could be done way better is one of two things: This came where the tortilla was laid flat on the plate and then the insides of an enchilada were on top. Due to the heat, the tortilla got stuck to the plate which is not user friendly to eat at all. I think with the amount of sauce (lack of), this could have been served up rolled. OR, they could have put in a lot more sauce to prevent the tortilla from sticking so badly to the plate. Since the rice is made in chicken broth, my wife couldn't eat that but the beans were vegetarian. I got some rice and stole some beans from my wife. This was SO DAMN GOOD. It was simple, fresh and full of flavor. Honestly, this was the best part of the entire meal. We started with the Pico De Gallo Uruapan. While on the menu, it does not mention lime/lemon as part of this, I did miss the slight sourness of the fruit. What I did find disappointing about this was the chips to pico de gallo proportion. The pico de gallo portion was in a tiny bowl and the chips we got was enough for at least 2.5 times the portion of the pico de gallo we got. My wife said that Americans eat more chips so it made sense. So while I may be wrong, $13 for that was at least 40% more pricy than it should have been in my opinion. I got the shrimp and scallop taco and a pastor taco. Sadly, both were very underwhelming. Nothing special about them at all other than the fact that the shrimp and scallop were beautifully cooked (I mean to get it as correct as they did here requires exceptional skills). However flavor wise, they fell way flat. The shrimp and scallop seemed like they were not seasoned at all. The rest of the ingredients too just lacked flavor. While the Pastor was a bit better, it still did not have the 'umph' you find in a good pastor. Service was not bad, not the best. We had to wait a bit while they were not terribly busy which was ok. Staff however was very friendly. Overall for me, this was a one and done deal. I wish them luck. I think they need to rework the flavor portion of their meals read more

My wife and I were out on our weekly new restaurant trek and we took a walk around the big lake near Nico's. I have heard a lot of good stuff about this place, so we parked nearby and took a walk. It took awhile to get a sever, but I ordered a Pryes Miraculum. It came from an upstairs bar. I ordered a barbacoa tostada, a lengua taco and a steak taco. They were all delicious and we chose from a huge ton of salsas. They were all delicious. I wanted an Indeed honey lager, but they were out. The whole place was just a little weird. I don't give out five stars too often, but Nico's has been consistently top notch with their flavors!! Nico's offers a variety of salsas and some amazing sauces. One of my favorites to choose from for the enchiladas is the Mole', which pairs wonderfully with their very unique carnitas. By all means don't skip their queso, it very tasty and goes well with a flight of salsa's. My favorite cocktail is the Oaxacan Winter, its a very smoky tequila cocktail.
