The ambiance was nice however the food was not at all what a "taco" would be. The meat was not cooked how it should of have been. The flour tortilla wasn't thrown in the oven or the grill or even the microwave to have been warmed up. My husband ordered soft corn shells and they broke apart because the tortilla wasn't warmed. They were using grocery store packaged tortillas, which is fine but at least warm them up to not have them taste raw. We've given up ordering take out or DoorDash from this place. Every time we have, the order has been wrong or something has been missing. If you call, they'll tell you that they can't do anything since it was ordered through DoorDash...but if it's something that wasn't included but was missed by the restaurant, we've been told by DoorDash that they can't do anything about it since it was the restaurant's mistake. We used to absolutely love this place then they first opened, but now I notice that the tacos are made up mostly of the least expensive ingredients - for example if you order a shrimp taco with rice, you'll get maybe 3 shrimp and a TON of rice. And the taco bowls are tiny and overpriced. There are other options in the area that give you far more for the money. I came here for the first time on a Friday for lunch. It was busy, but the food still came out pretty fast. What stood out to me was that you can build your own tacos. This ended up being a great experience! DRINKS I highly recommend their margaritas. We tried Marigold and Barrio Paloma. Marigold was sweet but you can still taste the tequila. Definitely no watered down margaritas here. FOOD As for tacos, we got a few preselected taco combos (La Tierra, Camarone Agrietado) and made a few of our own. Their taco combos were disappointing to say the least. La Tierra was so spicy that it overpowered the taste of the meat. I liked the pan seared portobellos and caramelized onions though. Camarone Agrietado was awful. The shrimp tasted a bit off and the cilantro rice didn't have much flavor. With that being said, the tacos that we made ourselves were a lot better. I definitely recommend getting one of the specialty tortillas for an extra dollar. The Bombshell tortilla is genius! I love that they wrap soft tortillas sound the hard shell so you can get the crunch without the shell falling apart completely. The braised short ribs was our favorite choice for protein, followed by Coca-Cola marinated steak. They have a great selection of toppings and sauces so you're bound to put together a combo that's perfect for you! read more

We make it to Portsmouth once or twice a year and despite this place apparently being around for 5 years, I had no idea it existed. It is a bit off the downtown beaten path, but can still be walked to. It was very busy on a Saturday but we were able to get a few bar seats. Our bartender was wonderful, and honestly, probably the difference in us wanting go back for a 2nd try sometime (Not sure of her name, but dark hair, petit, probably later 20s). Despite being extremely busy, we rarely had to wait for anything and she absolutely knew her way around the bar and the menu. They had 3 menus going - a brunch, their regular taco menu, and also a 'build your own' taco kind of thing, all ordered by checking off items on a sheet. The bad: We all ordered various specialty tacos from the regular menu, and all 6 tacos, across all three people were cold. Not quite out of the refrigerator, but at least room temp if not colder. We still ate them as we were starving and they're all kind of tacobell tacos, with a hard and soft shell all in one, so they were strangely addicting, even though cold. At first we thought: are they supposed to be cold?? Is this a thing?? My completely uneducated best guess is that there being 3 menus, including encouraging people to create their own tacos, is too much for the kitchen to handle when busy. Would much prefer less offerings and warm tacos. We'll give it another shot sometime and go for the nachos; those have to be warm, right?? read more

A basket of tortilla chips with salsa roja was a wise move, taking the edge off hunger while we studied the menu slash order form. My taco, El Jefe Loco, was a handful (and I've got big hands). With a guac side, the profusion of textures and flavors was inspiring, and plenty for lunch at a truly reasonable price. My companions were also pleased, though one had to ask again for a requested side. For that, for too loud music (it was noon, not clubbing hour), and for uncomfortable chairs I remove one star. Barrio was about the only Portsmouth restaurant open when I needed dinner a few weeks ago (I got there at 8 pm). Still scratching my head over naming a restaurant chain barrio - is no one aware of the negative connotation of the word? I ordered a Paloma and it was...fine. Served in a glass mason jar with no rim as I expected. The grapefruit juice wasn't freshly squeezed but it was a perfectly fine cocktail. What I was not expecting was a $15 bowl (and I live in LA so I'm used to overpaying for small portions of food) in a shallow cardboard bowl and a plastic SPORK as my utensil. Maybe, maybe this is a Covid vestige but honestly, if I am paying $50 for 2 drinks, chips and salsa, and a bowl, I think guests deserve metal cutlery. Another great cheap restaurant on the first night back in frozen Portsmouth, NH. Taco Tuesday specials were only during happy hour but since we came about 8:30pm at night, full price it was. Surprisingly, full price was not bad due to the side of the food. I got two huge tacos and coke for less than $20 with tax and tip included. Since it was my first time here, our waitress, Linda (She's awesome) went over the menu and how to order the tacos. She gave her suggestions and I went with most of them and it turned out great. Each taco was huge, the size of a big mac or bigger, full of vegetables, meat, cheese, and a whole bunch of goodness. I had to eat the taco, first normally then spoon up all the stuff that was left in the foil wrapper after. The meal came with chips and salsa any my table ordered a couple of queso sauce which was delicious. The service was great, Linda was fast and helpful and kept coming back to refill our drinks even though the bar was getting a bit busy. The only drawback was paying as we didn't split the bill sooner so had to separate everyone's order at the end. Even though the food is often cooked somewhat different from how I ordered, I always love it. Super tasty. Generally I like the staff here even if there are some unfriendly people. However... i came in today to pick up some food, super excited to get some tacos- but when I walk in even though there's always 5 girls at the host stand at all times- no one greets me or asks if they can help. One of them finally glares my way and I ask if I can please order out. She says nothing and gives me one of the check box menus. I seriously felt so unwelcome and when I was done checking the boxes off she ignored me and another girl had to take my order. I'm not one to write a review, especially a bad one, but this was absolutely ridiculous. If you schedule 5 girls to be at the host stand at all times at least hire friendly or kind ones I don't know if they're supposed to be waiting on people and I gave a 20% tip anyway but I'm feeling a bit fed up. It seems like none of them are actually there to work or that they need to work because they give the mommy and daddy's money vibe with the unfriendliness. I don't mean to be unkind but need to stress that if you're paying people to help other people PLEASE make sure they're doing that job. I feel much less likely to go into Barrio every time because of all the bad vibes I get from staff. My friends and I decided to dine in at barrio this past Sunday after hanging out downtown all day. We were expecting a wait being that it's a weekend in June, but it was rather slow and we were seated within 10 minutes and greeted by our server (Kathryn) not too long after to take our drink order. We tried to be courteous and asked about splitting checks before we placed any orders (since there were 9 of us) and right off the bat she sighed and told us she could... but it would be complicated. When she returned with our drinks, she handed out the wrong beer to two of us. We politely asked if she could get another since the wrong one had been sipped out of and she blatantly scoffed while grabbing the beer to swap it. Once we had all filled out our orders, we had to ask a host to bring our sheets back to the kitchen since our server was nowhere to be found and over AN HOUR later, we received our food from different employees. My friends and I are all Christians, so before eating each meal we all bow our heads and pray... mid prayer this server (Kathryn) loudly interrupted us asking how everything looked. I really don't mean to be a Karen. I've been a server for 4 years, so i'd say i'm pretty patient and understanding when dining in, but this service was just absolutely horrendous. The server being overall just very snarky while half her job was literally done by other employees and at the end of the night we were all charged an automatic 20% gratuity for the size of our group. Overall I enjoy Barrio. However my most recent visit my taco order was wrong and while it was remedied quickly, the overall taco was not delicious. Taco order was the seafood of the day, so Cajun scallops. What I got was chicken which was hard to discern in the first place because it had no flavor. Also, the entire taco had maybe 3 tiny chunks of this protein. When it was corrected and the scallop taco came out there was no seasoning on it, Cajun seasoning is usually reddish, these scallops? White as can be, and again, maybe 3 tiny bay scallops. I've gotten their actual fish tacos before and it was delicious. I don't know if it's cause the busy season is over and their standard of food is just dropping. But the corn salsa was unappealing. If they make it in-house, the corn was old, chewy and unpleasant. My other taco was amazing. It seems so hit or miss lately. It was super loud, long wait to get a table, even longer to get food. I get it, covid. This place has a great vibe! I feel like I am in SoCal even though it is January and I am in Portsmouth, NH. This little gem is right next to the new AC Marriot hotel I am staying at so it is super convenient! Barrio is part of the foodie haven that is Portsmouth. So far every restaurant I've eaten at here has been fantastic! I ordered to tacos to go as I have some work to do in the room. Service was friendly and quick even though the place was quickly filling up. I would recommend sitting at the bar. Again the service was very good! The margarita was the Casa Margarita made with El Jimador Respasado Blue Agave tequila and was very refreshing and tasty! But how are the tacos? What makes them good are the multiple ways you can order them! The kicker was with 2 tacos, chips and salsa, and a margarita it came to $14 at happy hour prices!!! Service is decent, but often inconsistent: some days having you flag down a server or bartender, other days adequately on-point. My fav? One day trying desperately to ignore the off duty server dropping an endless series of F-bombs at the bar while mid-day customers tried to enjoy their meals at the bar. Simply? Unnecessary. Coming here for drinks? Keep expectations within reason. Rotating specials are creative, but equally hit or miss regardless of delivery in hipster mason jars. For in-town margaritas, there is no competition to the fresh, homemade selections at Vida Cantina across town. Why come here? One thing: tacos. While most will be inspired to BYO taco from the laundry list of ingredients and options, give the recommended tacos a chance: specifically La Tierra coca-cola marinated steak taco. Equally large and in charge La Tierra is simply astounding: an oral orgasm of taco crunch and munch oozing of endless distinct flavors and textures and all vying for your olfactory attention at the same time. This is you gorging on Taco Bell at 2AM, but without all that death meat and GI Drano sauce. In short: quite possibly the best taco you may ever experience with your clothes still on. tl;dr: - loud inside - don't take reservations, long wait - strong/great margarita - good portion sizes - great flavor for tacos - queso disappointing It was a great location with great food. Inside is loud and really busy; outside patio area is quieter and easier to hear the music. Everyone working there is really friendly too though they were super busy - you may have to keep asking them to refill your water because they won't notice themselves. Be prepared to wait because there can be quite the queue and they don't take reservations (we waited 1 hour for dinner after getting there 8pm on a Friday). The portions are solid especially when used to sizes/cost in Boston. They allow you to build your own tacos with a lot of variability that can allow a new experience even with many visits. They also have premade tacos which can also be a good option especially when figuring out flavor combos. Overall the flavors are great for the ingredients and the predesigned tacos. Only complaint was that the queso dip was a little disappointing. We had gotten the tres amigos with two quesos (elote and stoner). Looks like someone melted cheese then accidentally spilled corn and rice into the cheese respectively. It was not enough to actually taste the corn for elote or the lime cilantro rice for stoner. The tacos/bowls are customized to your liking which was a plus and they were stuffed. They have a variety of meats, salsas and topping to choose from along with sides that could include rice, black beans, and other things. Such a fun spot !! The decor is on point, there is so much outdoor seating, and the service was fab. Unfortunately we didn't eat and only popped in for after dinner drinks... but that didn't stop us from devouring the free chips and salsa that came with the drinks! Barrios is busy. On Tues there was a line at 6 PM. I thought about going then. But staying on the coastal junction of NH & ME, it seemed eating the local specialties would be more appropriate. I couldn't, however, drum up a hankering for lobster. I'm already a New Englander who's been eating it all summer in RI & Mass. Not like the northern states could deliver anything new. So Wednesday it was Barrios. All of 30 feet from my hotel. I went when they opened to beat the crowd. For a chain it certainly has the feel of a local joint. Dia de los Muertos themes painted all over the walls, art-deco seating and staff decked out in their own clothes rather than uniforms. Good vibe. There are plenty of dips, salsas, bowls and tacos. You can put together taco ideas from an big list of filling & toppings. I just went for 3 of "El Jefe's Selecciones". $4.50 each. Thinking Boston prices, less than 5 seemed low. Picturing Qdoba I figured 3 tacos would be adequate for a guy counting calories. They came out in 5 minutes. Two things struck me: 1) The tacos were wrapped in foil. Smart! Keep stuff in the shells rather than your lap. 2) They were not small. Picking up the first one I realized there'd be some walking ahead to burn these off. Here's the breakdown : EL SULLY- (double-shell (flour soft+corn hard+queso), chorizo, chihuahua cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, Barrio secret sauce) Really good. But salty, which was expected. Chorizo is it's own problem. Salty to begin, any cooking boosts that saltiness up. It makes a better accent than main filling. Didn't stop me from finishing it however... BOMBA DE TOCINO (double shell- flour & hard corn + queso + crumbled bacon, thick cut bacon, chihuahua cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro-lime aioli, pickled jalapeños ) My favorite. Smokey aroma and the thick bacon had a little crunch. Everything played well together. I ate half to save some for later. EL JEFE LOCO ( stoner shell (flour & hard corn shells +chorizo+queso, spice rubbed chicken, fresco, smoked cheddar, pico de gallo, corn salsa, chipotle honey bbq, salsa roja.) Holy f.... ! Weighed twice as much as the Sully. One would've been enough. The sauciest of the three but also balanced in flavor. Smoke, spice & sweet notes all in harmony. Ate less than half and boxed it to go with the other one. Thursday I tried for Geno's, for some local flavor. Had Maine crab & a really sexy slice of pie on its web page. Closes at 4, won't seat after 330 & no crab. Back to Barrio. Ordered conservatively. Just two thing off the special card: a lobster taco and guacamole with grilled watermelon, chèvre crumbles and a balsamic reduction. The guac kicked it. I'm not balsamic vinegar's biggest fan. But here it worked really well and I really liked it. Riffed nicely with the goat cheese and lifted the naturally flat taste of mashed avocado. The Lobster Taco was less exciting. The lobster was lost among mango, slaw, avocados & the dressing. Friday: Morrison's Lobster in Kittery? Cash only? Meh. How about Barrios? Take Out. The Bomba & Loco again and I gave the Camarone Agrietado a whirl. Flour shell, jalapeño lime shrimp, cilantro rice, napa slaw, crack sauce Not bad. The shrimp were a little soft (marinaded too long?) and the crack sauce was just a little heavy, giving the taco a mayonnaise character. No big deal I had two other awesome tacos in a box. And a few hours to eat them.... The final note on Barrios is the staff. Great all around. Baillee on Wednesday was really nice and very attentive. Sydney was the same on Thursday. As was the bartender dude on Friday who tried to push free chips & salsa on me to soften the brutal, nearly almost 10 minutes I had to wait.... Food runners and hostesses were all buzzing around with smiles on their faces. Again, great vibe - start to finish. I leave Portsmouth in the morning. How I never got back here to update this review is beyond me. While the takeout experience left a bit to be desired, the dine-in experience is a whole other animal. When the tacos are hot and fresh delivered to your table they are beyond compare, and the bar staff (I end up eating alone late at nights after working late, don't judge me!) are exceedingly friendly and up for a chat when service allows. Since COVID there has been a notable drop in consistency with the product coming out of the kitchen, they've been affected by the same labor crisis hitting everywhere else, but in my experience if it comes out wrong or otherwise unsatisfactory they're happy to fix things which is all I think anyone can ask in these trying times. read more

I have been a fan of Barrio since it opened its doors. I've done lunch, dinner, happy hours & even hosted a private event there. Over the course of time it's unfortunately become completely inconsistent and now a place I don't desire to get to. I love the choose your own adventure of a menu, but the last three or four times, the choices I made came out as something else, cold or the smallest amount in a taco. Unfortunately this has poured into the bar as well :/ The skinny skeleton is an all time favorite, but again is so inconsistent... tequila, triple, lime, soda. Last night I got what tasted like bottled lime juice, which feels like it goes against, Skinny. Last night during happy hour we somehow spent 90 dollars on 4 cocktails (32), 6 tacos- 1 didn't show and 2 weren't right. I love the environment, I have loved the food & drink and I still love the chips and salsa but I just cant justify the price for the product anymore, sadly. Today my girlfriend and I wanted something similar to Torchy's. Let me just start off by saying that this is NOT Mexican food. It's NOT Tex-mex either. As a Mexican I wouldn't recommend this to anyone wanting Mexican food. They're tacos look amazing, but actually eating them is a different story. The meat is under seasoned and the tortillas were cold... who doesn't warm up their tortillas?? The salsa is more sweet than it is spicy. Overall the service and atmosphere is really good, but the food leaves much to be desired. If you're looking for Mexican or tex-mex you're better off at Qdoba or Chipotle, but if you want an American take on Mexican food you would probably enjoy this place. I got the beef rice bowl and the beef wasn't seasoned, whole bowl could use salt. The food is expensive and it isn't worth it. The customer service is nice but the food isn't good at all. read more
