We've loved Barrio Queen for years-- right up until we visited their Desert Ridge location tonight. Take a great restaurant and put it in a shopping mall; and what do you get? Yep, Mall Food! We had lunch last Saturday and both had the trio mole enchiladas. The service was good as well as how the food looked on the plate but that's where it ends. The food was bland and not hot closer to room temperature. It was also supposed to have a side of calabacitas, which I was looking forward to having but they served rice instead, also bland. I've gone there before for tacos which were good but this was not worth the $18.00. read more

After all of the hype, we finally made our way to Barrio Queen for a night out for 2 families...overall the food and experience was unimpressive. The menu was unique with lots of offerings, but the food that we ordered was just OK. I ordered the Chilis En Nogada and found that a very similar dish (stuffed poblano pepper) offered at Z Tejas was much better in comparison (Z Tejas has always been hard to beat!) While the restaurant was busy on a Sunday evening at 5 PM, the service was incredibly SLOW! We ordered the table side made guacamole to have with our chips and salsa and the server finally made into our table to make it after the entrees had arrived??? We ordered desert (kids churros, churros and ice cream and tres leches cake) and found them all to be once again just OK...that it once they finally arrived, our check had been sitting at our table a good 5-10 minutes before our desserts were delivered. The patio was comfortable and nice and one of the few high points of the restaurant. The next time that we crave some unique Mexican fare, we will probably head elsewhere...but I might give a patio Happy Hour a try? read more

UPDATE: Still giving this place amazing reviews!! My sister and I have become repeat visitors (at least once a week) we go in for Happy Hour and sit at the bar. Brandy is amazing, she is so friendly and always makes sure we have full drinks and amazing food. She is part of the reason we go in, plus the food is AMAZING. Nachos are A+++ and the Pork Tinga on the Happy Hour menu is also fantastic. Definitely worth visiting. read more

This place did not disappoint. We came on a Sat afternoon and did not have to wait. We were able to sit under the tree on the patio. Our server Carlos was excellent. He was friendly, offered recommendations and made the experience very pleasant. I will ask for him again when I come back. The manager Amy was also cool and friendly and remembered our names and said bye when we left. Their menu is huge and the food was good. Chips and salsa were very tasty. We had the shrimp ceviche, was delicious and we had the street taco trio. Yummm... All were good, but I think the chicken with the caramelized onions was my favorite. . This week, on a Thursday, my husband, three kids and myself went in search of a tasty lunch at Barrio Queen (Desert Ridge location.) This place was bustling with activity but, we were quickly escorted to a booth in the back, near the restrooms. Hubby & I have been here before but, without kids, so I remember thinking to myself if this is where the 'families' are brought to sit. Lol... With 107* temps, our family was not only hungry but, parched...so, happily our server, Maya, quickly brought each of us our ordered drinks and ice waters. I kid you not, she probably made more than a half dozen trips back and forth keeping our (10) glasses full. Never have we had someone so attentive to our needs! She made the experience!! Oh, and yes, our appetizer, entrees, drinks and dessert were delicious. We are so glad a restaurant of this caliber has made its way to North Phoenix, as our choices in this area are normally limited to chains or fast food. I'm a visitor from Floria looking for some good local food and my bartender from the JWMarriott Spa recommended Barrio Queen. The atmosphere was funky, the food fabulous and the bartender Austin made the best skinny margarita ever! The chips and salsa were fresh, the shrimp ceviche was to die for and I could have eaten 5 more! I don't remember the name of the meal I had but it was recommended by Austin. Came for Restaurant Week with a girlfriend, she's been a few times and said we should give it a go. The value for what we received was a good value considering the entree sizes are huge the starter and desert is tiny though. We ordered the Steak Rancheros which I was super excited about and was pretty disappointed by and I only say that because I tasted it after we also ordered The Az burrito !!! Holy moly talk about fantastic I will be going back just for that everything else was pretty underwhelming esp the churros those where flat out gross. The service was meh ? Simple request like no sour cream on the burrito and no onions or pecans on items where not taken Care of like the server forgot to put it on it the cook just didn't care ? We ordered and literally the appetizers came out the same time as our entrees ? Then we had to wait forever for the guy to come and take out dessert order. So all in all I would recommend going for The Az burrito and the cocktails looked amazing too. Beautiful decor, clean & has a nice large patio. read more

My wife and I have been coming The different BARRIO locations for a while now but hands down Hannah and Kara are the reason we now exclusively go to the Tatum location. They are masters off their craft and experts of the menu. Its A great place to go have great food and fun drinks. My husband and I have lived in the valley for over 20 years and have tried pretty much every Mexican restaurant in the area. Today was our first try at Barrio Queen and we were both blown away starting with our professional and friendly service by our server Edina all the way through to the end. We ordered the recommended tableside guacamole and were not disappointed in the least. The pomegranate topper was the piece de resistance! We split the coctel de elote (grilled corn )appy and each ordered a different taco. Both were delicious ! I guess for us the overwhelming impression was how incredibly fresh everything tasted. We are from Texas, so we're used to Tex-Mex and weren't sure if we would like this type of fare. The answer is yes! We lucked out and came on a Tuesday so got $1 off tacos which made me feel less guilty for selecting 3 different ones to try. My favorite was the fried shrimp. My mom ordered a different 3 and surprisingly her favorite was the vegetarian (she is a big meat eater). My wife ordered the Queen enchiladas and after a slight issue with the temperature, which was quickly resolved, she was very pleased. We were all VERY happy with the chips and salsa, and ate so much of it we almost couldn't eat our meals. The best way look salsa we have had in a long while...not spicy at all, just a great depth of flavor. The best surprise of all was our server, Diamond. She was friendly, excellent at her job, offered great suggestions, and just seemed invested in our experience. I can't remember that happening at any restaurant in the last 10 years...maybe more. She provided excellent customer service...including resolving minor problems like getting my drink order corrected (tasted like diet) to getting a new plate made when food was delivered cold (and comped it). Aside from the food being delicious and the restaurant being clean and following all precautions for COVID, I really just need to give a huge shout out to Angel, our server. Stopped by for lunch and thought the food was excellent! I work in the area and have wanted to stop in for a while. I got 3 tacos one was the barrio pollo, a fish taco, and a chile taco and all were excellent. Got the churros for dessert and was very impressed on how good they were. Absolutely loved it! Wife had the chopped salad and said every bite was full of a multitude of flavors. I had a taco trio and a burrito made with the most delicious rib meat! The only thing we both turned our noses up at, were the chips and salsa. Chips were flavorless and the salsa lacked excitement. We ordered the spicy salsa as well, tying to kick up the flavor, but no such luck. That was disappointing, but the main dishes were fantastic! Server was excellent. Went there yesterday for the first time. It is a gorgeous place hands down. We had a table of five and found everything delicious. EVERYTHING! Our waiter was great and very accommodating as we made a couple of request that were not exactly on the menu. We got a variety of tacos, tacquitos, enchiladas. The guacamole was gone in two minutes.
