I've been here twice for happy hour and have only increased my rating from 2 to 3 stars. I really wanted to like this place but I'm honestly struggling with the food & to be honest, some of the service as well. Hostess: lovely and seated us timely Waiter/server: while on the patio for in-person visit one. We ordered the "special of two tacos and a margarita for $12," the queso fundido with chorizó on the side, and a Margarita. The waiter brought us a shot of tequila and margarita. When we asked why the menu said "margarita" and we had a shot of tequila, he pointed to the tequila bottle on the menu and said "see, tequila." ‍ummmmm. Ok. Sure. We ordered another margarita and went on with it. My friend enjoyed her vegetarian tacos. The thing about the queso fundido that truly baffles me is actually being there at the restaurant and receiving a hot cast iron pan with cheese that melted but congealed still. The queso fundido also lacked any depth of flavor and definitely killed any desire I would have of ordering it again. Super disappointed. Happy hour visit two Hostess: lovely and sat us timely. In my opinion, TOO MANY PEOPLE in the restaurant and on the patio. While I understand Ducey lifted his restrictions, I do not agree and find it to be incredibly short sighted. That said, everyone wants to go out like the virus is gone or on it's way out. I will say there were even more people there by the time we left and it honestly did not make me want to come back again. For the food or for too many people and possibly contracting the virus. Waiter/server: pleasant enough and ok-ish on time. Not going to say too much about timing because I don't know the staffing situation and like I said, TOO MANY PEOPLE! In any event, he confirmed the "two tacos and margarita special" was in fact "margarita was not a shot of tequila," we ordered that again for both of us. My friend with the vegetarian tacos and me with the carne asada tacos. She enjoys the vegetarian tacos & says they are good. The carne asada tacos lacked seasoning on the actual carne asada. It NEEDED everything in the tortilla to give it depth and flavor. Let's not be hasty, it wasn't a lot of depth. Again, I really wanted to like this place. I know many do. I just can't get behind it. I met a few friends for lunch here on a Friday and Cassie was our server. She was very sweet and friendly and kept on top of our needs without being pushy. I love the chips here - always fresh and hot. One friend is vegetarian and she was impressed with the options she had to choose from. The queso fundido was great. Be sure to enjoy the very last bites of baked on cheese. I have been to several BQ locations in the Valley and I appreciate that everything is consistent, down to the lime sherbet candies as you leave. Upon entering we were seated immediately and greeted by a nice hostess. Our table was a bit small and close to another couple but it was fine as it looked a bit busy. Our server was amazing! She was very attentive to what needed to be filled and taken away. On her "A" game! The food though was just a little under the greatness of the service. I wouldn't consider the birria tacos - "quesobirria". The consommé was very disappointing. It tasted like the juice thats in the crockpot after a roast. No cinnamon or sweet tasting flavors. The beans were okay. I ordered fajitas and forgot to take a picture of them. I got the $32 trio fajitas and it only came with 3 shrimp. The portions of the 3 kinds of meat were small for that price. Overall the service is great but the food isn't. I would recommend some different places especially for the quesobirria. A personal favorite of ours, but it's been a while since we visited. Did not disappoint. We sat outside because this is the time of year when you really should enjoy the patio seating. Birds are singing. Light wind blowing... picture perfect. Kassandra just added to our already pleasant visit. She came by after waiting a a bit for someone to ask for our drink order. She took it upon herself to assist us. We are so thankful. She is funny, attentive and made us feel right at home. Now as for the food... my go to fav are the pastor tacos, SO GOOD!! But today I tried the nachos. So glad I did. Great flavor. Love the melted cheese. And it went well with the salsa. Along side I had the Agua Fresca Pina. The tacos are pricy for what you get. I ordered a shrimp, cactus and grilled fish tacos. I didn't eat the corn tortilla so I was able to dissect what was in the taco. I'd say there was one shrimp diced up in the shrimp taco. The grilled fish had one force is fish...yes ONE small mouthful... probably 1/2" by 1/2"! The cactus also was lacking in substance. All 3 tacos had plenty of filler, but the main part of the taco was a joke. 3 tacos for $12... it's a bit of a rip off... Have tried this place several times to give it a chance. The bar service has always been less than pleasant. I've noticed that men are paid attention to and given good service at the bar, but women are not. Food is very average. This restaurant gets foot traffic due to its location, but not repeat customers because of good service. read more

Staying at the Marriott so wanted someplace close by. This is in the heart of shops and restaurants. We sat at the bar and enjoyed chips and salsa before ordering barrilla tacos and chicken quesadillas. My husband loves these kind of pork tacos for the dipping sauce that comes with them. Delicious! The quesadillas were rolled not flat so unexpected but still delicious! We also enjoyed sangria and beer. It was a Sunday evening so a little slow and we left an hour before live Latin music started. We went in on a Monday evening and sat at the bar. The place was pretty busy and loud. We were given menus, decided what we would order, and we waited. The bartenders were very attentive to the young females but not not us as we are older. Talk about some age discrimination! Finally the bartender took our order for our drinks but not for our food even though we told him we were also ready to order food. He finally took our food order and we both ordered cheese enchiladas. Our drinks were served and tasted very weak. Our food was delivered and was awful. Completely inedible because they used far too much salt. My dining partner scraped the sauce off and tried to eat his enchiladas. Two bites was all I could take. I refused to scrape the sauce off in an effort to make the food edible because I wanted the sauce on the dish. Had I not. I'd have ordered it on the side. We didn't eat the food but the bartender didn't notice or ask. We told him as he was going to remove our full plates of food. He offered to put in another order but I turned it down. I'd had enough bad service, weak drinks and awful food. My dining partner ordered tacos. 20 minutes later still no tacos. We got up to leave as they delivered them. After all that wait, the tacos weren't that great and had hardly any filling. He was so hungry he scarfed them down. We did not enjoy the service, the drinks or the food. They did remove the charge but the damage was done. Such a disappointment. We won't be back. read more

There are views of the parking lot or the street from the patio, but there's a tree and string lights and it still creates a nice atmosphere. The decor inside is also really nice. House margaritas and guac (made tableside) were excellent, we ordered a variety of tacos and they were all ok. I'd still give them higher ratings, but the service was not great. I ordered a second margarita before I got my meal, but got it as I was almost finished eating. We asked for the check and waited another 25 minutes after we'd waited awhile and I checked the time. The food may be ok but the drinks are watered down and not worth what they charge for them. For a margarita they fill a small glass with so much ice with hardly anything in its two sips and it is empty pretty pathetic. Hardly any taste for the alcohol and if you add a shot they charge you the same price as for a drink. You end up with $30/drink. We spent $200 and left with an empty feeling! read more

Food was delicious, service was good but the hostess sat us in the bar area on uncomfortable wooden barstools instead of a table and we had already moved once so didn't move again. My legs were so uncomfortable that I couldn't enjoy my meal. My waitress was accommodating and said we could move to a table but that we would have another server. The Desert Ridge location is a little disappointing but for the most part the food is flavorful. Customer service is totally hit or miss especially at the bar. The flavor and quality of the food is good but sometimes hot plates are served cold like they've been sitting on an assembly line. For the record, we've been to this location five or six times. Came here with my son on Saturday evening. It was pretty busy but we were seated on the patio immediately. I ordered the Enchiladas Trio Plate and my son had the Azteca Burrito. Our food came out in about 2 minutes which would be fantastic if we were at a fast food place..... or if the food wasn't cold. Flavor was good though and we had tickets to a concert so we didn't say anything. Chips and salsa are complimentary and their salsa is delicious! Slightly chunky, smoky roasted chilies and very fresh. Margaritas are delicious albeit very expensive, small and served with a ton of ice. Expect a large bill. Restrooms were a disaster. Both automatic towel dispensers were broken so rolls were sitting on the counter and wet. Toilet paper roll holders in the stalls were also broken and TP was sitting on toilet. Trash everywhere. Makes you wonder what the kitchen looks like. read more

I love Barrio queen! It's always a solid choice for a cute dinner date or when a friend is in town. The restaurant itself is very nice and the patio is beautiful if the weather cooperates. I am obsessed with their chips and salsa. Cannot get enough of them. Sometimes I just want a marg and some chips/salsa lol. We've tried a handful of things here and they are always delicious. They have a good amount of vegetarian friendly options. Some favorites are the loaded fries with corn, the corn chowder, the veggie bowl, enchiladas (be sure to try the cactus if you never have!) and the quesadillas. Their quesadillas are these little fluffy bites unlike any other I've had! The drinks are perfection. There's classics like the house margarita (which you definitely can't go wrong with) or other unique offerings if you're feeling like trying something new. The only thing I've tried here that wasn't great was the tres leches cake. I'm not sure why but it was very dissapointing. Overall I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't yet. I recommend arriving early as they can get pretty busy and there's usually a 30 min or so wait on a Friday/Saturday night. read more

This was my first experience at barrio queen and I'd been wanting to try this place for a while!! We sat down and within 5 minutes, we were brought complimentary chips and water. Since we were waiting for a friend, we enjoyed the chips and salsa before ordering when she arrived. My fiancé and I opted to share the margarita flight which comes with 3 of the margarita options. My favorite was the pepino margarita because it was a classic cucumber margarita with a little bit of a kick with the jalapeño-infused tequila. For my entreé, I ordered the trio enchiladas de mole that comes with beans and zucchini on the side. The three enchiladas are all filled with different cheese or meats and are topped with different mole sauces. All three were different but delicious!!! The mole sauces all had different deep flavors. My fiancé ordered the carne asada burrito which was ginormous and filled with lots of meat. I was able to try a couple bites and the steak was perfectly tender and flavorful. While the price point is a little higher (naturally since we're in Scottsdale), the service and food didn't disappoint! read more

I wish I could put 0 stars but it doesn't let me on this app. Monday night was terrible. I usually go to a different Barrio Queen location, and now I know why no one recommends this one. The hosts upfront, particularly the one with the short light hair, were clueless, rude, and when asked for directions to bathroom, I got shrugged away and rolled eyes. If I wanted attitude, I would've stayed home with my teenage daughters. lol. This wasn't much better. I would expect some decency from the first people you see when you walk in. I didn't get any acknowledgment when we left either. The service was good, food was delicious as always. Love their guacamole, definitely best thing on the menu. I was so excited about Barrio opening up at Desert Ridge and I realize it has been open for some time now. I am finally getting around to reviewing it. This is our go to for tacos up in the Desert Ridge area. We have tried other items on the menu, such as enchiladas, but it is the mix and match taco menu that has our hearts. My favorites are: Al Pastor, Cochinita Pibil, Huevo con Chorizo, Pescado, and Gringas. You can't go wrong with any of them really! Start off with a Toloache: Tequila, Triple Sec, Blueberry puree - not only is it delicious, but gorgeous to look at! 5 Stars without hesitation. Barrio Queen is some of the best Mexican food I have EVER have. Starting with the salsa - it is fresh and flavorful. Everything else we had was incredible as well. The corn, tacos & queso were unbeatable. The service here was top notch and the vibes are great for families, date nights or a fun party night out. We used to come here often but this is the last time we will be at this location. It's declined so bad! Our waitress took forever - yes we know staffing shortages are an issue but she kept forgetting our stuff and knew she was forgetting. The Queen enchiladas were the worst I've had. This used to be my favorite. The tortillas were so hard. The tamarindo drink was watered down so I had to order a coke. The place is dirty! The walls are dirty and there's flies everywhere! They told us it would be 5 min to get a table because they were cleaning them but that was a lie because our table and seat was dirty. Just sad to see this place go to the ground. Sadly we won't be back. I have it two stars because the queso fundido was good and the chips and salsa are always on point. read more
