Barrio Queen offers tasty Mexican plates as well as tequila and mezcal based drinks. The tacos are good, with a local twist to the style you'd find in Mexico City, and enchiladas are fantastic, too. Some items are just about perfect - the beef taco reminds me of high-end barbacoa and is absolutely delicious - whereas some others like chicken taco is perhaps a bit less "authentic". The apetizers and desserts, such as coctel de elote, guacamole, flan, and churros, are prepared elegantly, and complement the experience. Barrio Queen is also one of only few places that serves chiles en nogada during their autumn season which distinguishes this place from the ordinary (although often great in their own genre) tex-mex venues. read more

Totally craving Mexican when my sis came to visit and this spot was literally a 5 minute drive and I've never ever dined in so we went for lunch. We ordered different types of tacos along with their guacamole and a couple of margaritas. Their drinks were really really good and pretty big size. The tacos had a lot of meat on it but it felt a bit lukewarm not sure if they waited til all the different tacos were ready. You can't go wrong with guacamole and theirs was very lime-y which I loved. We got the flan to top off the sweet craving and it was just plenty. Our server was super attentive and nice and we also got seated fairly quickly for a Saturday afternoon at desert ridge. The reason I didn't give this a 5 stars is cause my sister and I got mauled by mosquitos while we ate, we also saw flies around our food / table area. The worst part for me and maybe it's the combination of meat and sweet but I felt so nauseous an hour after eating and visited the restroom frequently as did my sister. Got it to go, but ambience looked nice, appreciate the live bolero band & the molcajete/guac station. I got the award winning cochinita pibil and that was one of the most trash food dishes I've ever had from a high standard place. 95% of the pork was fat. Came to Barrio Queen with my mom for dinner and it was good! Cute outdoor patio area and I liked all of the decorations. There's also a bar area with tv's in addition to standard seating. The service was really slow for how empty it was, we had to call our server over when we were ready to order/pay and we didn't get water refills, but the food was pretty good! We shared the chopped salad and poblano enchiladas. Both were tasty and good portion size. It could be a fun spot to grab a margarita flight with some friends. My fiancé and I decided to grab lunch at Barrio Queen due to the glowing reviews I saw on Yelp. We ordered the assorted tacos, the Arizona burrito, and the Barrio guacamole that is made table-side. I absolutely loved the guac - the addition of pomegranate seeds was a new concept for us and added a level of flavor that I didn't know was missing! The tacos were overall bland and while the Arizona burrito was decent, it wasn't anything to write home about. Their outdoor seating area is lovely and parking in the plaza was easy on a Sunday. Since I was only wowed by the guac, I wouldn't recommend making a trip for this spot. We had just checked out from the nearby JW Marriott, so this was a good spot to grab a quick bite. I'm sorry but I found it quite bland. It wasn't authentic Mexican food at all. I was pretty disappointed with my meal and was surprised after the wait was so long. It's clearly a popular spot but after seating, it was also clear why this restaurant isn't frequented by the local Mexican population. There are dozens of Mexican inspired cantinas here in The Valley. But only a few worth calling Mi Casa, Barrio Queen is one of those places. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. Half the seating is outside, in a COVID friendly space. They have a zillion heaters, so you won't get cold. The holiday lights on the tree in the center are year round and a nice touch. We would recommend starting off with drinks and a table side Guacamole. Barrio Queen's version includes pomegranates that created a nice taste. Another appetizer to try would be the Queso Fundito, which has a nice layering of flavors. They changed their tortilla chips! Their previous chips were so thick and delicious! Their food is good and I especially like their taco selection. Their margaritas are excellent. With so many choices of Mexican restaurants the chips were the deciding factor for me. Their chips are a lot thinner now and don't stand out from other restaurants. Barrio Queen had been sitting in one of my collections folders for quite awhile, before getting the chance to visit. I chose this location, because 1) I thought it was the original location, and 2) I thought it had a gift shop. I was wrong on both counts. Sort of. This location is not the original location, but that means nothing, especially after my visit. This restaurant IS very popular, and we had a short wait, with two other groups ahead of us and 2 behind us. We were able to check out the menu while we waited, and while not huge, it still took me some time to figure out what I wanted, even after we were seated for a few minutes. We were seated as far back in the restaurant as one could possibly get, and right outside the bathrooms. This wasn't as terrible as it sounds because it actually gave us privacy compared to many of the other tables. We had a good view of the bar, and all around us was various beautiful Dia de los Muertos decor. The bathroom even has fun DDLM murals! I ordered the Trio Enchiladas de Mole: 1 chicken, 1 pork, and 1 beef enchilada, each covered with a different mole: green for chicken, red for pork, and brown for beef. It was served with a side of sauteed vegetables, and black refried beans topped with cheese. I already knew I was going to get a margarita, but I wasn't sure what kind, until I saw the Death's Door on the menu. The name intrigued me because, in Wisconsin, we also have a Death's Door, but it is a whole different thing (look up the history of Door County). The Death's Door Margarita is Habanero, Jalapeno, and Chile de Arbol infused tequila, Ancho Reyes, Azunia Agave Nectar, and fresh lime juice. Being a sucker for spicy drinks, I of course had to have it. Remember how I said this place has a gift shop, sort of? Well, when you first walk in the door, there is a small area of merch to the left, including clothing and mugs. I had my eye on a skull mug, $18, but was going to think it over during dinner, and maybe grab one on the way out. Lo and behold, the Death's Door is $16 solo, or $28 with a skull mug! For a savings of $6, it was a no-brainer...I got the mug. Now, as we were settling up the bill, I asked our server about the mugs, assuming we would get new, unused ones (mine had a small area of peeling paint, and no, I was in no danger of consuming it). She said we could take the ones we had, or she could bring us new ones. We opted for new ones. Unbeknownst to us, she went to the merch shelf, and unexpectedly brought all of them to our table for us to choose! We thought she would either just bring us new ones, or tell us to pick ones off the shelf as we left. Overall, we had a good time, and everyone left stuffed and happy. I grew up in California and I know what a good Mexican is and this definitely was not it. The place was overcrowded due to it being located at an outdoor mall. Took us about 20 minutes to get a seat and then about 30 minutes for them to even come and serve us. Only thing I can say that I really liked was the salsa and the refried beans that they serve when you get there. But the tortilla chips they tasted a little more store-bought than homemade. I don't think I would give them a second try if I was in town and I needed to choose Mexican food. Which is kind of disappointing because it's located in Arizona. And I know Arizona has some great Mexican food. Just having to choose this place because it was close to the hotel at the mayo clinic. read more

I have been to the DR on numerous occasions. Wasn't always a big fan but my wife said let's try it again it's been a couple of years. We arrive at 4:45 ish and it wasn't crazy busy but most of the clientele was outside. Our waiter was doing well until it started to get busy. It appeared that he had all of the tables outside with the exception of a few. He was doing his best but we could tell he was overwhelmed and there wasn't a ton of support. He was doing all of the side work as well. Making the fresh guacamole, filling waters, cleaning tables, the whole nine yards. Meanwhile people were going to the bar to get their drinks while the manager stood at the bar talking and joking with the bartenders. We didn't order apps just a couple of simple dishes and we were there for almost 2 hours. Had a talk with the manager afterwards and she just asked "Who was our waiter?" That wasn't the point. Was going to eat lunch here, but decided against ordering anything else after we tasted the guac. The food was great, the drinks delicious. The service was not great, slow and forgetful. My parents had been here for a lunch earlier in the week and suggested we come back for a lunch as a group. Overall we had a decent visit, mostly thanks to the tasty food. Definitely DESPITE rather poor service. I was deciding on which cocktail I might want when I saw that they offer a margarita FLIGHT. It had two that I definitely was interested in trying and I am always keen to try more. So I was down. The Toloache (blueberry flavor) was my favorite. All the cocktails that were ordered, shared, and enjoyed amongst the table were delicious. As for our food, I got a selection of three tacos. The pescado (pretty dang tasty), chorizo (my fave almost everywhere that has a chorizo option, and that stands here), and the barrio pollo (my least favorite...a bit blah and bland in comparison to the other three). Non-premium tacos are three for $14 which feels pricy, but they were filling and tasty so under 15 bucks for a meal isn't bad. We also shared an order of the queso fundido for the table. It was good, but we very quickly ran out of tortilla chips which more than half our queso remaining. Getting a server's attention to ask for more chips was an ordeal. Not to mention getting waters refilled and another round of drinks...our whole visit could have been like 20 minutes shorter with more attentive service. We sat outdoors, in December 2022, which was lovely. They have heaters too, should that be requested. My mom wanted to ask that one be turned on near us, but again...getting someone's attention to do so was difficult. The food was good enough that if there was a future return trip to Phoenix, I would certainly not mind going back. But the one visit we had left something to be desired for our experience. read more
