We had a great dining experience sitting out on the patio with live entertainment. We were greeted by our server Ricardo and the first thing I noticed was how thorough he was. He was on top of everything, making sure our drinks and chips were refilled without us needing to ask which was quite refreshing! He came back often enough to check on us, making sure our food was tasting good and if we needed anything. The food at Barrio Queen is always great and a go-to whenever we are in town but today I am going to give full props to Ricardo! We tried going for dinner Monday, the wait was an hour we left and came back on Tuesday for an early dinner both times the hostess were really rude to me when I approached them to get a table. Specially the light skin one with curly hair I heard her talking to the other girl smack about me I guessed she remembered me from the day before. And to be honest the reason we went back it was about all the good reviews about this place but I was so disappointed at the service, the food. My wife and I came here for lunch today while shopping at Desert Ridge. Super convenient location at Desert Ridge and tons of ample parking. Very clean parking lot and super clean entryway. We were greeted immediately upon entering and seated immediately, as well, despite it being lunchtime. Our waiter came to our table immediately to take our drink order. Drinks were served immediately and he gave us a minute to look at the menu. Fresh chips and salsa was brought to us. Chips were warm and incredibly fresh! Ordered their (3) taco meal with a side of their chorizo refried beans and was not at all disappointed. Tacos were awesome and the refried beans were among the best I think I've had. Our drinks never went empty and soft drink refills were brought out consistently. The only downside to our visit was the pricing. It was about $50 (including tip) for my wife and I for lunch. We both had the (3) taco plate with a side of refried beans + (2) soft drinks. That doesn't seem like comparable prices to other locations around the Valley. Maybe you're paying for that all-encompassing Desert Ridge experience, but I was rather shocked when I got the bill. Tack on the 20% for the tip and you're at $50 no matter what. I mean, the food is good, but if I wanted to spend $50 on lunch - I can think of a few other places I would have rather gone. We enjoyed our visit and the food IS good, but let's face it. My fiancé and I love coming to Barrio queen for Date night. Even though it's in the middle of a mall, the outdoor space does not feel like such and love going at night with the patio lights. The chips and salsa are free and the salsa is my favorite from any restaurant, I don't like my salsa spicy. I always get the peoples margarita and it is delicious and consistent every time we go. My fiancé loves their burritos and I love their tacos or quesadillas. The green sauce that comes with is also my favorite! Every time we go, the bartender or waiter is always very kind and accommodating, I also feel like they don't judge me when I say yes to another basket of chips . Based on service and overall experience, I give 5 stars. The food was a hit/miss. The patio was nice. There are heaters if needed for the cool weather. We ordered everything at once and the server kindly offered to course it which we declined. If I were to dine in the future, I would have accepted having it coursed! The queso fundido needed to be enjoyed fresh and since we sat outdoors it got cold/clumpy as we ate our other dishes. That isn't the fault of the kitchen or server...but good to take note of for. Quesabirria tacos were delicious. Al pastor were pretty good too. Cocktel de elote was reminiscent of street corn but off the cob and creamier. Charro beans lacked flavor unfortunately. Overall, most of the food could have used salt. Cocktails were delicious. I tried the Whos your Daddy with jalapeño infused tequila as well as a Ginger Margarita (forgot the actual name). The ginger was not as strong as expected in this drink - pineapple overpowered it in my opinion. For desert, we had the seasonal Oaxacan Chocolate Mousse. Decadent, rich, and slightly bitter... a chocolate lovers dream. Definitely need to try this as long as it's being offered! Improvements - Servers might recommend coursing based on what the table is ordering + could explain why to the table. Servers also might ask for feedback when a dish is hardly touched by the table + they choose not to take it to go. In our case, this was the side of charro beans. Lastly, the restroom needed attention. Trash overflowing, empty paper towel dispensers, low toilet paper. read more

Well, today was a special visit @ Barrio Queen. We are very big fans of Barrio Queen, especially the nice outdoor patio with misters in the summer and heat lamps in the winter is a big decision point for us. Needless to say we have been here numerous times, but unfortunately today we had an incident that made us pause. It is not uncommon that certain parts of an order, especially if outside the norm get messed up, but the recovery and honesty towards customers is key in those instances. So here goes nothing: Lunch/Day date. We ordered fish and shrimp tacos, due to dietary restrictions the aioli on the side. Only two people, so a total Order of 6 tacos. Unfortunately the specifications was missed on one of the plates. And lots of aioli was on the 3 tacos :-( We quickly told our server Christian about it. Apologies were made and the plate was returned to the kitchen. When it was redelivered to the table, the amounts of Cabbage and salsa were extremely large. When taking a closer look, we saw that 50% of the aioli was still on the tacos, just covered by additional garnish. To put it lightly, we felt betrayed. Yes, the plate was taken back again, it was taken off the bill and redelivered a third time. (This time with a total of two shrimp inside the tortilla) :-( But it was more so the ambience of our Day date being destroyed (we ate about 15 minutes apart), being lied to and our dietary restrictions not taken seriously, that threw us of and will influence our lunch date decisions in the future. We would have hoped that Barrio Queen would have tried harder to convince us that this was a one time occurrence and try to recreate the opportunity of a positive lunch/day date experience in the future for us. read more

Barrio Queen combines a relaxing environment, delicious food and great service into your dining expeirence. The menu at Barrio Queen has something to satisfy everyone's appetite. I really enjoyed the tableside guacamole that is made to your requested level of spiciness. The pomegranate seeds are the special ingredient that make this guacamole uniquely diffrent. On this visit we shared the three different tacos: carnitas, barrio pollo, and carne asada and the Arizona Burrito made with the pork cooked in green chiles with verde sauce. All our entrees were delicious. The flavor is really something special. We needed somewhere family friendly to go on Valentine's Day because we had our 9 year old with us. She loves the "Skeleton Restaurant," as she calls Barrio Queen. Of course, they were packed, but we managed to get a reservation and we were seated in Fatima's section. She was racing around like a chicken with her head cut off, but she never let our glasses get empty, she was prompt with our order, and constantly checked back on us. My husband had the short rib enchiladas, daughter had quesadillas, and I had the nachos (some of the best I've ever had). Large portions. fair prices, and excellent food. Highly recommend! read more

Barrio Queen is a good little spot to grab a variety of tacos for a local chain. Their menu has a ton (roughly two dozen) different taco options, and each one we tried was very tasty. We tried a chicken, fish, beef, and pork option (see pics and descriptions). Each one was packed with meat and toppings. We also tried the table side guacamole, which was really good. Our server asked what we wanted in it and how much, and he even added pomegranate seeds which was a tasty touch. My only slight complaint was that it was $14.50. Now, I know it was freshly made, but I also have a pretty good idea of how much those ingredients cost. Bad service twice. Once sitting at bar, where 2 bartenders couldn't seem to find time between talking and sticking to wait n the customers sitting at the bar. Oops! This was meant for the Stetson Ave Scottsdale location! We just happened upon this restaurant and so glad we did! Their margaritas are fantastic and so many different types to choose from! I think mine was called people's choice and had a splash of pineapple juice- perfect! My husband had a different one and really liked his. We had the fonduta and it was delicious! The corn tortillas with it were exceptional- moist and flavorful! The only downside was that it was very filling. We tried one of their tacos (steak, soy....) and it was really good- plus they have lots of different tacos to choose from! If we remember correctly Jose was our waiter and he took great care of us! This used to be one of my favorite take out restaurants when it opened it DR. However, the food has consistently gone downhill. One of my favorite dishes used to the pork green chile. The past few times I've gotten it, the meat is either all fat or so rubbery that the texture makes it inedible. It used to be the best, tender, fall apart pork chile verde. I don't know why I keep going back thinking it was just an off day, but it's clearly the standard now. Also, back in the day they would give you salsa and chips with every take out order. Went here with a group of ladies for a late lunch. The place is located in the Desert Ridge Shopping Center across from Barnes and Noble bookstore. Love the decor and paintings in this place. We were greeted and seated immediately because of the off hour. We had the Barrio Guacamole, 3 orders of quesadilla con pollo and a Barrio Style Protein Bowl. Fresh chips and salsa were on the table to munch on while we waited for our meals. As we waited, staff prepared the gauc in front of us with onions, guacamole and pomegranate seeds. The guacamole was very good. Shortly thereafter the meals arrived. The quesadillas will a bit of guacamole were great and we ate every last bite. There was no room for dessert. Pleasant staff. Slow, below average service. Reservation at 6:30 and took over 10 minutes for a server to greet us. They finally brought water and chips and we ordered margaritas. The server took our food order but never returned to check on us or refill our drinks until we got the check. I wish I could say this lack of service was rare but having been here multiple times since they opened the service has gone downhill. Food is always great, consistent, and timely. Margarita's are weak. We had the El Pepino and questioned if there was any tequila. I would recommend this for takeout for the food and avoid the terrible service and drinks. read more

I called ahead and made a reservation I then called ahead to confirm that there was actually a table. They confirmed it was ready to go. I explained that my wife needed to head to work and they confirmed it was ready. However when we arrived literally 2 min later we ended up waiting for 15 min then when I asked for a supervisor or manager the young lady at the front asked me why. AND Then I acted like a jerk. The story is a little more complex than that but the point of it was I felt entitled to an assumption that I was right and she was wrong? And it was that young lady, I wish I knew her name, it was she who, with grace and a smile though I'm sure secretly but rightly imdignabt. And the manager Taryn? And the rest of the staff who did a great job making sure this Jerk and his dancing family had a really nice time. It was ok. A little over priced for Mexican food. The chips were super greasy and the table side guacamole was confusing. We got a bowl of cubed avocados, wasn't mashed or truly blended with the other ingredients so we had to mash them ourselves. Maybe our server was new....still disappointing looking at other pics is the guacamole on Yelp and then comparing it to the one we got for lunch. Service was 2 stars, came and filled one persons glass of water and walking away from the other two glasses needing refills. Barrio Queen never disappoints me. It was packed on a Monday night and we were very happy to sit at the bar while waiting in the table. We had a few margaritas to start and about 30 minutes later got our table. The chips are amazing. The salsa is very good. We had the table side guacamole and love the pomegranate seeds in it. We both ordered tacos. The waiter suggested slow cooked meats and he was right. I did try a grilled fish taco, but wouldn't recommend that one. The Cowboy beans weren't good. The churro desert is cold just FYI and could be shared by an entire table. I took it to go. Highly recommend for dinner. It was a very fun time. The staff is awesome btw. Last Friday, my friend and I met here at the Desert Ridge location for happy hour. They have a beautiful patio with lots of trees and lights so we opted to sit outside. We sat at the bar which was half inside half outside, but since we were outside we could view the fun decor inside. There were lots of tvs so it's easy to catch Friday night college football or NBA games or whatever sport you enjoy watching. My friend really enjoyed her sangria while I sipped on a margarita. Both are on the happy hour menu, but I ordered my second once to be spicy! While we were sitting, we were also offered to sample some beer, which was pretty refreshing. All these drinks were complimented with the wonderful chips and salsa we were eating! I still wanted more food though with substance, so I ordered the pork tinga stuffed poblano pepper. It was really good! I definitely would recommend ordering it! The elote was tasty too but there was barely a smear of the mayo mix so the bartender brought some extra. We both had a great time and will certainly return for another happy hour or even a full dinner. Come check this place out if you haven't yet! This location is great! read more

My son and I stopped by tonight at 10PM for dinner. When we walked in a gentleman was standing to the right of us. No hello, no eye contact, so I cordially greeted him. His response, " My host will be right with you. The dining room was nearly empty and only one table on the patio. There were at least 3 employees sitting idle and/or chatting. As it turns out, the gentleman at the front was Brian the "manager". I neglected to notice the word "manager" embroidered on his polo shirt. So we waited for his hostess since he clearly lacked any initiative to seat a guest. This would never have happened at the Gilbert location, NEVER. The hostess was a real professional. When we requested a patio table on this gorgeous, cloudy night, we were informed that such would not be possible because of the supposed impending rainstorm. No immediate evidence of an approaching rainstorm whatsoever. I offered the hostess a generous cash gratuity and she said it was up to her manager. So I offered him the same gratuity. The hostess was gracious enough to negotiate acceptance of our request with the "manager". He obliged and we were sat. I provided the promised token of appreciation to the hostess and we had our menus in hand. Three minutes went buy, then three more and ultimately another three. No greeting from a server, busser, food runner, server assistant, nothing. We were not happy, so we exited. After we made it to our vehicle which took another three minutes, I returned to ask for the manager's name. The hostess was surprised that we hadn't been attended to and genuinely apologized. As I exited once more, I overheard a male server mention to the hostess that "There must have been people sat at a table on the patio, but they were now gone." Over 10 minutes to acknowledge a table, all the while on a slow night. I am not sure where the breakdown of communication occured, but I don't care. I shouldn't have to. The original plan was to have a beautiful patio dinner at Barrio Queen, and end the night at Dave and Buster's for billiards and games. I must concede, I am well over "run of the mill" bar food. However, following Brian's disappointing performance tonight, we were unusually open to concessions. Fast forward 10 minutes. We sat ourselves at Dave and Buster's. Busy, busy, busy. So busy there were only 2 open tables. Nonetheless I mentioned to my son that I expected to have our drink order taken within 3 minutes. Wrong, we had it taken in just over one. Amazing food on the table 6 minutes after the drinks arrived. Hannah took amazing care of us. She not only made us feel appreciated, she made us feel like family. Brian, when you are ready to sharpen your leadership skills and hospitality management qualities, please see Hannah at Desert Ridge Dave and Buster's. Ladies and gentlemen, for a real Barrio Queen experience, visit the Gilbert location and ask for a server by the name of David. Wonderful young man and by far management material. Fabulous dining experience guaranteed. Don't waste your time at the Desert Ridge Barrio Queen, at least while Brian is at the helm. We visited on a busy Friday at 5:30 and waited 20 mins for a table. It was chilly, but they have heaters that reach pretty much all tables. Lots of outdoor seating. Our service, including the table side guac was great! Prob the best guac I've had at a restaurant. we declined the pomegranate seeds. I got the jalapeño margarita, which was perfectly spiced, keeping me warm. Chips were homemade and delicious texture. I could have used some sea salt on them. Salsa was not memorable. I got the chile relleno vegetarianism, which was a nice healthy balance to the chips and guac. My husband got the carne asada and said it was delicious! read more
