We saw this place and the outside decor looked pretty cool. When we walked in no one was at the hostess counter. Waited for about 5 minutes before someone came. Not a big deal. Waited a few for the server to get drink order. Place was not too busy. Took a while for the drinks to come. We didn't order anything fancy just water. Waited a few for the server to come back and take our order. Food arrived about normal waiting time. The carne asada burrito was tasteless. No flavor at all. The steak was dry, over cooked and mostly fat. My daughter ordered the azteca burrito. She said it was over salted and not very good due to the saltiness. Previously my favorite north Phoenix lunch spot. Love their table-side guacamole, chopped salad, chips & salsa, coffee and flan. The service is typically as top notch as the food. My last visit was a 4/3/24 lunch date with a friend. The food and service were great as usual, however it was almost impossibly to carry a conversation because of the fluctuating noise levels of the sound system. We requested that they just leave the music off but our server informed us the manager was attempting to "fix it." The on and off high volume continued for most of our lunch which was extremely annoying and we left feeling like we need to find a different north Phoenix go-to lunch spot. read more

The BQ my wife and I had gone to was in Queen Creek. It used to be a "must" to take visiting family and friends to and even a date night for the two of us. The menu items have regressed in taste and quality, especially the $20 chicken burrito (Chipotle has you beat by a wide margin for half the cost). At 2pm on a Friday the 3 of us recently waited 30 minutes for 2 drafts and a margarita. Chips, salsa and service was slow. This has been a continuing theme at this restaurant for us. We all ordered the aforementioned burrito and the taste again wasn't the same. The tortilla was different and the rice and beans were lukewarm. The food was pretty good, but overall the service was very slow. We went to lunch on Monday at 1pm and the host let us know it would be about a 15 minute wait, which was fine. We decided to sit at the bar and order a drink while we waited. We put our order in at the bar for 2 margaritas and waited for about 20 minutes for our drinks to be ready. Our table was ready for us before our drinks were. At our table, our waitress seemed pretty busy, but we had to ask for silverware and napkins 3 times before we were actually brought them. Overall the ambience was really fun and the food was good, which is why I would give it 3 stars and I'm hoping it was just a busier day for the staff in terms of service. read more

Well my family and I love coming here good food but this last time we came in on Sunday 11/29/20 around 1:30pm and sat on the porch cause it was just so awesome outside . That's about all the awesome we had the service was horrible , the food was horrible , as soon as we ordered water it's like all the service went out the door. After we ordered and received our food we did not see the waiter till we where done . And we did not finish the food it was undercooked , and cold .. don't know what happened.. Great food, good service from a stretched staff of servers. They need to replace the blender. It sounds like a plane taking off.

I would have gone 4 stars just for the service, elote dip and churros but I can't. Our servers, a young man, sorry I don't remember his name was great, attentive, efficient and knowledgeable. We started with 2 different house Margaritas. We loved one but the one with pineapple was horrible. Our waiter replaced it with the citrus one that was much better. The guacamole for $15.00 was one avocado. That seems a bit excessive for one avocado. The elote corn dip was really yummy. My hubby got the enchilada suiza. He said they were quite blah. One of my sons got the carne asada burrito. He said it was ok, meat was tough but he liked the flavor. I shared the Asada plate with my other son. We liked the stuffed green Chile and the small chorizo quesadilla. The meat again was tough and not that flavorful. For dessert we had the churros and the chocolate cake. Cake was just ok. The churros were amazing. They were stuffed with a cinnamon jelly? so hot and good. If I do return I will come for the elote dip and churros. read more

Barrio Queen at Desert Ridge has large dining room inside and mist cooled patio seatings. The atmosphere was very nice and comfy. Our hostess guided us to a table in the middle of the room but we asked her if we could get a booth which sat empty ten foot away. She glanced over and gave a frown and proceeded toward the booth. Not a good way to start our meal. However, our waiter (I think his name was Aaron) was super cool. He made our table side guacamole and very nice about accommodating our dislikes and likes in the ingredients he had at hand. He was super swamped serving several tables at once, but did a great job in taking care of us. Their chips and salsa was delicious and the table side guacamole was outstanding. It had pomegranate topping which made it unique. Their premium tacos were also outstanding. It had really yummy flavors without being salty. Definitely worth another visit. read more

In my never ending search for local color when I travel, Barrio Queen kept coming up as a must-visit place here in the Phoenix area. Since this location was the closest to my hotel, I told Waze where to take me and off we went. The place was hoppin' for a Wednesday evening, but I spotted some empty two-toppers on the patio on the way in. I was quickly seated there and my server came by for the drink order. I selected a jalapeno margarita, skinny style; it was delivered fairly quickly along with chips and salsa. The margarita was as close to perfect as I've had in a long time; the skinny style really suits me, as it's much lighter on the sweet, leaving this one tart and a little spicy, and none of that neon green stuff. An excellent start to the meal. Chips were very, very good, and a bit unusual in that they were fairly thick, yet still delightfully crunchy and definitely quite golden brown. I should have asked for just a half basket :( Moving on to the more substantial food, I chose the coctel de elote and the cochinita pibil. The elote was a generous portion, and was very, very good. It hit all the right notes in terms of ingredients, though I might have grilled the corn a bit longer and maybe had more lime. This are really nitpicks, though - it was delicious. The pibil was a VERY generous portion, and I had asked for mashed potatoes in lieu of Mexican rice. The black beans were good, not mushy at all, and seasoned well. The mashed potatoes had a nice garlic note, could have used a tad more salt, but in the end, I just ate them as-is. The pork, of course, was the real star of the show. Tender, perfectly shredded, well seasoned, it was an absolute delight to the palate. A little container of pico was provided, as were crunchy pickled onions on top. It was all very delicious. I realized after I left that I didn't receive the hand pressed corn tortillas, but I had had enough carbs for the evening with those chips, so I'll come back another time for those. Even with what was delivered, I took a substantial to-go box with me for lunch the next day. Atmosphere is really good here as well; the patio features misters that were mostly unobtrusive and definitely effective, and the lighting and furnishings were very nice. It would definitely be a good place for just a single diner like myself, or a group. Whether you're a resident or just passing through, you need to check this place out. It's outstanding. read more

Met some family friends here for lunch while vacationing in Phoenix. It is conveniently located in the Desert Ridge Shopping Center. We were staying at the Marriott Canyon Ridge timeshare about 5 minutes away. If you are staying at the Marriott Desert Ridge or the JW Marriott Hotel, you need to check this place out! Full disclosure... I've eaten here several times. It was one of the first places opened after the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted. And, since they were open, my wife and I decided to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary with a nice night out. Several tables were not in use due to social distancing but the wait wasn't long at all. However, with so any empty tables the atmosphere at dinner seemed more like an early lunch crowd. Not the fault of BQ at all but just an observation. Our server was pleasant and helpful. Here's a recap of what we ordered. Chips & Salsa: This is complementary but the salsa seriously lacked flavor. The chips were hard and we had to ask for salt to make them passable. Grade: D Queso Fundido: This is a very stringy cheese dish served in a small cast iron pan. It's not creamy as you may expect. It's topped with portobello peppers, mushrooms and chorizo. Sounds good right? But it wasn't. It just didn't really have any taste. They serve it with a few street taco sized corn tortillas but they didn't help. It's also pretty pricey at $12. Grade: D Pollo En Mole Poblano: My wife was stocked about this dish. She looked it up on the online menu a few hours before we got there. Plain and simple; It was awful. This fell right into the bland category with everything else so far. She took 2 bites and that was it. We gave it back and the waitress graciously took it off our bill. Grade: D- Arizona Burrito: Finally something with flavor. I've really enjoyed this in the past but today the pork seemed a bit tough and the tortilla was super soggy. It was the lone bright spot in the meal. Grade: C We may have hit this place too soon after the quarantine lifted. Our waiter was very kind and answered all of our questions thoroughly. He knew I was Latino and spoke to me in Spanish which I really appreciated bc it made me feel like I was en mi barrio! Not sure about the other locations of Barrio Queen but their Desert Ridge one definitely exceeded my expectations. Ambience: we went on a busy weekend evening but got seated quickly for our party of three - and at the nice patio to boot! They've decorated it with string lights and lots of plants so you really don't feel like you're dining at a strip mall. They have a very prolific menu that I was impressed by and would be good for satisfying large parties. It's worth noting that we had someone in our party that cannot eat ANY spice and usually has trouble finding things she can eat at Mexican restaurants, but not here! As our waiter readily assured us, there were a lot of items that weren't spicy at all. She was able to enjoy the chips and salsa as well as the salmon special of the day that she wanted. That's not to say that they sacrificed flavor and didn't have spicy options! really enjoy spicy salsas and sauces, and when I requested a hot sauce, our waiter brought us an in-house habanero sauce when I had expected just a bottle of Cholula. I love a good mole sauce, so I ordered their Trio Mole Enchiladas. A generous portion and nice sampling of different types of mole including green, red, and black. My favorite out of the three was the black mole, a little smoky and chocolatey. The ratio of cheese to chicken for the filling of the enchilada was good as well. Highly recommend! read more

Being a Barrio Cafe lover, I was excited to see this sister restaurant opening closer to home. I figured we would wait a few months for the newness and hype to wear off before trying it. I will say, it was still packed with a wait.. and we showed up close to 5pm on a Wednesday which is still pretty early! I felt a little bad for the hostesses, they had a never ending line of people asking where they were in line, wanting to get added to the list, or needing to be seated. Props to them. Once inside I immediately liked the decor and overall vibe of the place. Definitely a little more modern and hip than the cafe which is more old school (but still awesome). Very open and a combination of indoor and outdoor seating. Our waiter greeted us after a minute with chips and salsa, and took our drink order. The chips are pretty thick, but I liked the salsa. I thought it had a little kick to it but still played it safe staying in a more mild zone. Our waiter was very nice and when it came time to order, he handled a few substitutions with ease and no judgement. The menu has a good assortment, but definitely what seems to take up the most space are the tacos. I took this as a sign and ordered the Mar Y Tierra tacos, which were three tacos on blue corn tortillas with shrimp and carne asada, topped with some pickled onions, avocado crema and queso fresco. They were so so so so so so so SO GOOD. I expected a great meal since I've had good experiences at barrio cafe, and this did not disappoint. I also ordered a side of refried black beans which were good. My companion ordered the Suizas Enchiladas with no sauce or chorizo on top, and swapped out her side of beans for a side of rice. The enchiladas consisted of pulled chicken and cheese, and she said they were excellent. When her order arrived, she still had a side of beans, but once we alerted our waiter he was quick to bring out the rice and so nice about it. The only downside was it taking awhile to get our check after we had finished. It was definitely super crazy by that time (close to 7pm) and everyone working was clearly running around to keep up with their tables/duties. I totally understand the chaos of a crowded restaurant and don't hold that against any server, but it still felt like it had a bit of that new restaurant vibe to it, still some small kinks to figure out. Either way, it was a very enjoyable meal and we will certainly be back. After a few visits, this could easily be bumped up to five stars - the food is already there. read more

First time at Barrio Queen. Lots of choices at Desert Ridge. Took a seat on the patio next to the portable evaporative coolers. Server found me after a few minutes and off to a good start. Chips and salsa were served. Chips were fresh...salsa was a bit bland for my taste but had great texture. Ordered three Cochinita Pibil Tacos. This was a house specialty. The pork is marinaded in sour orange and achiote paste and topped with pickled red onions and a homemade pico de gallo. Other guest had the same as an entree with rice and beans. Server forgot to mention hot plate to other in party but nothing serious. The food was tasty...the pork was shreded and a bit greasy. The tacos were much better than ok but really not the robust flavors I was expecting particularly with the pickled onions. Have lived on sonoran style mexican food for many years. I recognize the style here appears to be from a different region. The flavors are also different. There were many other choices on the menu and looking forward to trying the cheese enchilladas. read more

Busy Saturday night with great weather so we decided to sit out on the patio! It's national margarita day so naturally I decided on the delicious casa margarita! Not too sweet and not too strong. Some salt half way round the rim of the glass & a fresh lime. The chips and salsa were so delish! We took some home with us. My boyfriend got the carne asada torta and fries and I got the adobo torta with fries! Both were delicious. The fries have a TON of seasoning (still great but just FYI!) Pairing this with the adobo torta was a lot for the tastebuds. SO much flavor!! I couldn't eat the whole thing so I took the rest home but it was a great meal. The carne asada was a little more simple, not as much seasoning or spices but still juicy and delicious! The patio was so nice and created a fun and energetic ambience. I have really enjoyed their taco selection, so many good choices to choose from. The Al Pastor has all the right spices and flavors. The tortilla holds up well to the moisture. Their chips and salsa are unique and delicious with plenty of crunch and the right amount of spice. Drag made guacamole, hard to beat, love the pomegranate seed addition. The carne asada enchiladas were hard to stop eating. We tried the new crispy chicken sandwich, it has a good combination of flavors but fell a little flat, it was good, not great. The fries had a good spice to them and were a nice touch. Dessert should have been good but they overcooked the Donita's so they had a burnt flavor, the took care of us on that though. I had a really great lunch on Monday with Mom at Barrio Queen. We were lucky enough to have Carly as our server. She was bright, outgoing and on top of our every need. Water promptly refilled as well as soft drinks. Chips and salsa first:. Chips seemed very oily to me, but salsa was delicious. Fresh and blended until only small chunks of veggies remained. Tacos: I ordered two Pescado Asado tacos which is grilled fish. They were fresh and tasty with just the right amount of chipotle sauce and cabbage. I like the thickness of the corn tortillas. They are sturdy enough so that evwn though they are small, they can hold up to the fillings when eating them with your fingers. Mom order a deep fried fish taco and a brisket Taco. The fried fish look great, but she ate it with a knife and fork. The brisket Taco consisted of one large chunk of meat which looked to be very stringy. Upon cutting it up it was extremely tender and flavorful, but it was surprising to see the taco with only one large chunk of meat like that if you intending to pick it up and bite through it. Again, eaten with a knife and fork, but pronounced excellent. Salad: We ordered a house chopped salad split, no black beans. It was the most beautiful dish, with each topping laid out in a line like stripes on a flag. Toppings were very generous.I have never actually gotten too much queso freaco anywhere before! :) The chipotle ranch dressing didn't really seem like a fit for me so I asked our server for side of vinaigrette. She brought a vinaigrette, but it was mostly oil. so I ended up using the provided chipotle ranch and also some of the tomatillo sauce that accompanied the tacos. This was a very enjoyable salad, due in great part to the pomegranate seeds, which were one of the many generous toppings. I think perhaps I will order this again and add chicken or beef or even shrimp! The split salad was still served on two separate 8in plates, so I cannot imagine how large a platter on which the regular $11 salad is served! Bravo! One last word about our server Carly... she is also a second grade teacher and working within our district right here in Phoenix, Arizona.
