Barrow's is a small, iconic, South Tampa sandwich shop. I have had lunch there 3 or 4 times a year for many years. It recently changed hands. The new owners freshened up the place (even a new trash can) but didn't mess with the quality of the food. Nice people. Great sandwiches. My favorite is their egg salad with a side of potato salad. The man on the phone was so polite, friendly and efficient! Noon on a weekday and still 10-15 min only for pickup. The soup that day was cream of asparagus and it was SO GOOD. Perfectly wrapped to be transported safely home and piping hot. I went with the egg salad on a whim and it was perfection. My friend had the turkey Rueben and loved it too! Both came with a wrapped pickle for the sandwich and crackers for the soup. All very fresh, homemade and tasty. I was pretty disappointed in both the soup and sandwich I ordered. The bread on the sandwich tasted like it was a month old; dry, crumbly, flavorless and stale. The bread was such poor quality it did not keep my sandwich together and it was falling apart with every bite. A new favorite place to get a sandwich. My husband says he knows why this place isn't as popular as other delis in the area - the clientele is older. Even though there isn't a lot of seating it was still really easy to get a seat. Same with the parking lot. Even though it isn't that big, there were still enough spaces. This is great for my neuroticism. I hate trying to find parking, waiting in lines, and waiting for a table. We went at 12:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, which should be prime food time, and didn't have any issues. The people manning the counter are super nice. When I ordered the chicken salad sandwich (because so many of you recommended it) he made sure I was aware it has curry and wanted to make sure I liked pumpernickel. Heck yes I want the sandwich the way it is intended to be. It literally took a couple minutes for them to make the sandwich and get it to my table. The sandwich is big! I got just the sandwich and was full until dinner. It has a good heaping of chicken and the sweetness of the plump, golden raisins really completes this sandwich. The pumpernickel is super hearty and is great to hold up the heaviness of the chicken salad. This is my favorite chicken salad sandwich to date. I left here full and happy. I've been here only a couple of times. The last time, I actually went to Wright's, the new and improved giant, hugely renovated Wright's and the line was ridiculous. The owners of Barrow's are SANDWICH GODS. I could eat here every day for lunch! All of the items on the menu are made with fresh bread and Boars Head meat and cheeses so you can't go wrong with anything you order. My favorite sandwich on the menu is the Monte Barrow. The sandwich consists of turkey, salami, ham, swiss cheese, dill pickles, spicy brown mustard, and mayo on toasted pumpernickle. On a rare occassion that I don't order the Monte Barrow I may order the California Chicken Salad sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich is HUGE and I usually just order a half sandwich because it is packed with curry chicken salad. If I am watching my diet I order the Chef Salad. If you are looking for an authentic Cuban sandwich I'd advise against ordering Barrow's. Their Cuban is tasty, but it has a German twist on it since the owners are German. Found this cozy little sandwich shop off Henderson. The food is good. My favorite was the seafood salad. It was seasoned very well. They have homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing that I put on the salad and it was good also. Turkey sandwich was ok. My meal came to over $12 which was a bit pricey for me considering I order a half a sandwich and spinach salad with 2 scoops of seafood Overall atmosphere was cozy and quiet. This is a small little shop and walking in it's a little dark. The man behind the counter was very nice and welcoming. I ordered the curry chicken salad since everyone on here was recommending it and it was alright, it needed salt and didn't expect the curry flavor to be so strong. It was pretty good but not as amazing as everyone was making it seem to be. I'm giving it 4* because it was super fresh tasting and just generally well made and such a HUGEEE SANDWICH!! I barely finished my half of the sandwich (needed salt though). Must say I will be back to try different sandwiches because you can tell all the ingredients are fresh and made daily. This past Friday started out much like other days. My Yelp friend Michelle M. and I were trading messages which went something like this: Me: Have you got any plans for lunch? I need to get away from the paperwork for a while. Michelle: Great idea, where do you want to go? Me: Any place south of Kennedy would be a new review for me. Michelle: OK, let me look through your Bookmarks and I'll give you some suggestions. Me: OK, I'll bring my passport and see you at 12 Noon. And that would be how we ended up at Barrow's Gourmet Deli on Henderson Road for lunch on Friday. Barrow's is a classic German deli which has been serving food for about 20 years in this location just off of Dale Mabry and Henderson. Barrow's is in the same general part of town as Wright's and Mott & Hester, so you know they must be a darned good place to stay in business with that type of competition near by. All three gourmet delis are within a few blocks of each other, and each has their own unique spin on classic gourmet deli sandwiches. The sandwiches at Barrows are all made with Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses, and freshly-made bread. The menu has soups, green salads, deli salads, deli sandwiches, sides, and homemade cookies, brownies, and treats. The sandwiches are all huge, so you have the option of ordering a half sandwich combo or the full thing. In my case I went for the Roast Beef Rancher which was thin slices of lean roast beef, piled high on toasted rye bread with Havarti cheese, lettuce, red onion, and a bit of Ranch dressing. Add a bag of baked chips and a soda, and I was a happy camper. Delicious sandwich -- very filling, and no room for dessert!
