How can you possibly give Barry's less than 5 stars? THE best generous sandwiches and tater salad!!

This place takes advantage of people who don't know better. Paid $30 for a Reuben that isn't even sub-sized. They pile all the meat in the middle and leave the ends empty, so you're mostly eating bread. It comes with a tiny cup of potato salad. Food was just OK, nothing special. For $30, this feels like straight-up price gouging. I could have bought lunch for two days somewhere else for the same money. Save your wallet and go elsewhere. read more

2025! High prices, difficulty in hiring, shortages, and short tempers. This place has seen it all. For all these years, Waban has been lucky to have Barry's. I have had slow service, but the food has always been good, if traditional. Some people need healthier options. This is not the best place for that. But it is is the best deli in Newton. First of all, we were the only customers in the place (off hours?). We ordered a Pastrami and a Corned Beef with cheese. Two sandwiches came to $44.00. While the meat was indeed tasty (CB nice and lean), the rest left much to be desired: (1) The young woman making the sandwiches didn't seem to understand what we were saying. I understand that it's difficult to find employees these days but her training could've been better (e.g. like showing a tad of interest in the customer with a smile, exchange, confirmation of what was ordered). (2) The Corned Beef had no dressing. Had asked for cole slaw on the side. She didn't seem to understand our request but it was delicious in such a tiny cup. (3) The Corned Beef did indeed have cheese but oh my goodness. It was like 1/2 of just one thin slice so really didn't do much to complement the meat. It was as if there was NO cheese as (honestly) I had to open up the sandwich to hunt for it. (4) No pickles (in a deli???). (5) The Pastrami was acceptable. Potato salad was delicious- but in such a tiny cup. Parking was easy but the highly anticipated deli sandwiches were delivered with such lack of care, we won't be returning. You know how you reeeaaallyyy know a deli is delicious. Line out the door and wall to wall humans... I have found my people. Rachel, pickle and slaw on the side. Quart of matzo soup for the next day. Almost every time. Some days I don't have time for a post lunch nap and skip the sandwich. It happened to be 'freezing' today 55 in September. Freezing. I needed Barry's. It warms you up from the inside out. And it's so filling. I'm going to try and walk off the pending food coma. Matzo soup is great! With Covid we needed a lot of soup in this household. Always came to Barry's. I never had noodles and my matzo. But they put noodles in theirs!!! It's legit. Look at those big chunks of chicken, carrots, and celery... Other than soups and sandwiches. Barry's has got you covered for all things related to Jewish foods. Sunday is Jewish New Year and Barry's was prepped. So many delicious sweet things to welcome in the new year. Plus all the traditional stuff. Their challah looked amazing. Their muffins are muffin top inducing and worth the treat once a year. This was one of the biggest disappointments I've had in a restaurant I've been going to for 25 years. This was a staple in my childhood and my family's life events. I believe it has been sold to a new owner and they charge astronomical amount of money for sandwiches that should be 10 bucks with maybe four pieces of pastrami on it. They charge $22! The food is good. But, it is typically crowded and the staff isn't exactly friendly. They are much nicer than in years past- but it's really a coin toss on if they'll be nice, or if they'll act like you're an inconvenience lol. There is plenty of street parking available. I have been going to Barry's for over 25 years and for that reason I truly tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. That said, it may be time for Barry's to call it a day. 3 of my last 4 visits have been totally unacceptable 1) On this visit I was charged $42 for a bill that totaled $21. When I brought it to the persons attention, they tried to tell me that I was wrong. 2) On this visit I was charged $128 for a bill that totaled $16 3) This visit was fine 4) On my most recent visit, I mistakenly didn't check my order before taking it to my 90 year old mother for lunch. I had ordered a #1 sandwich with a few changes. When I opened the sandwich it was completely wrong. I called Barry's to tell them about the issue, asked what time they closed and said that I would bring the sandwich back ( fully intact and uneaten ) so that they could make me a correct sandwich. The woman who answered the phone rudely told me that there was no need for me to come in until Monday ( Memorial Day ) as the only person that could authorize a free sandwich was the owner. I said that I wasn't asking for a free sandwich. All I wanted was to return the incorrect sandwich and for them to replace it with what I had ordered & paid for. Service is purposeless the help works in slow motion I waited 30 mins for 4 sandwiches The response " it's a lot of sandwiches " Your a deli you make sandwiches no excuse. A New York Deli makes this place look sad it never used to be this way at Barry's They need to pick it up and even after a 30 minute wait they still got the order wrong oh yeah did I tell you I went in 3 more times and the service took forever amazing that people tolerate this expensive slow experience things are beyond disorganized behind the counter Guys figure it out! I know that your process flow is awful. The restaurant space is small so therefore attention must be paid to how your customers and employees move around the space. Scales should be available so sandwiches don't have to be weighed on the same scale for take out orders. The way orders are written down and actually put in twice at point of sale is too slow. You would benefit from the TOAST system. The coolers take up too much space. Employees need to be segmented and responsible for certain tasks. You have loyal customers you should respect their experience and be accountable for errors. Asking "am I in the food business"denies the experience of your customer which is subpar. You sound be in the business of getting people in and out of the deli with a positive experience. Not dread that they want deli. You are in the restaurant business and I suggest you listen to your customers with regards to their experience not your excuses. A restaurant consultant could help your enterprise a great deal. Times have changed since Barry ran the place and you need to change before it is too late. Go Barry's! I am a big fan and hoping for your success. This is the worst deli I've ever been to. I've never been treated so badly in my life at any food place. I placed an order online, went to pick it up and they completely messed up the order. I asked for the sandwich to be grilled and the lady straight up said that I had ordered pass the time where they could grill it, even though I has ordered at the correct time. I kindly asked if they could heat it up any other way, and she said I should throw it in the microwave if I wanted to... are you kidding me lady? I left and went to my car, then this lady comes after me and insists that I lower my window and when I do, she starts yelling at me that the sandwich was in fact grilled. I tried to explain that it wasn't, and she just said that is was, refusing to look at it. Why on earth would you go after a client to keep insulting them?! I ordered a half sandwich with a side (it comes with a side. What I got was a whole sandwich. The entire sandwich had less than a 1/2 cup of chicken salad on it, all lettuce and a thick cut of tomato. I was shocked. The side of potato salad was really good, but, tiny. Located in Waban Square an easy walk from the T station, Barry's a nice little deli with a sitting area available for those who wish to eat in. They have cellphone block inside though, so if you want to contact someone with a question about their order, you'll have to head outside to do so. Sandwiches have a Barry size option of double the meat for a $4 charge (depending on the meat... double the tongue is $6, and it is $5 extra for another kind of meat... was it brisket?), and they each come with your choice of cole slaw or potato salad and a wrapped pickle sliced in half. The potato chip option is no longer, due to some sort of recent change in health policies... yeah, I don't get it either... The sandwiches were freshly constructed to order, sliced in half, and wrapped to go. We also ordered sweet potato fries and onion rings for $3.79 each, which came hot as a decent portion in styrofoam containers with ketchup packets tossed in. The fries were crispy but could be naturally sweeter, while the onion rings were pretty good versions. While my reigning favorite purchased potato salad continues to be Sam LaGrassa's in Downtown Boston, this was still a good creamy version, while the cole slaw was a drier vinegary sort - good, but I prefer KFC's creamy shredded sort. Portioned out in those little plastic cups, they looked rather small at first, but were actually perhaps a quarter cup apiece... The tongue was basic (just lots of thinly sliced tongue between the bread) but really tender and good. The Pilgrim was pretty good too, although I personally would had preferred a thicker layer of cranberry sauce. My wife and I ate there for breakfast last Friday, 6/16/23. Our waiter was pleasant but very inexperienced and spoke poor English. The other man there who brought us our coffee - we had to ask for it - was unfriendly. We had a very long wait for food that was worse than mediocre. The coffee was watery. Some of the few items on the tiny fruit cup were mushy and discolored. The "hash browns" appeared to be a frozen patty. The corned beef hash had a sour taste. And the check was incorrect. read more

I never post reviews and I feel compelled to provide my dissatisfaction as a review for this deli. We are not from the area, and went to try for a quick lunch with some other families that we were with. Both service and food were below average (very fatty deli meat, not grilled) as well as an extremely long wait. We received bits and pieces of our orders in no rhyme or reason fashion. We had a baby, as well as 4 young children waiting well over 30 mins for items such as grilled cheese. Understanding that kitchens have waits and may be understaffed- the service feels more upsetting than food being under par. Still being charged full prices with all of the issues with the waiting for the orders was distasteful. Also, the tone and attitude of more than one employee when we kindly asked for status updates on the order was appalling. My family will not be heading back anytime soon, and we are upset enough to feel that this warrants a review to forewarn others. Perhaps they take better care of take out orders.... read more

This is my home away from home. A reason to sneak away to Boston. One of my absolutely favorites from a world-traveling foodie. Why?? Because they serve everything with a hug and a smile and when you sit in the small dining room, it's filled with regulars whom you can assume are your friends because you share this love of Barry's. So, #1, it's heart-warming, soul-feeding, loving and #2, it's so authentic and homemade. Get the Rachel Sandwich on marbled rye, the sour pickle, (I also love the Rueben), the spinach/feta Knish, my favorite chicken matzo ball soup (will fix any ailment), the potato salad and always take a bag of onion bagels with a variety of cream cheese, Tate's chocolate chip cookies, beef brisket (with the uniquely sweet au jus) to go. Got there about 4:30 PM being told they close in 10 minutes over and over again. It says you're open till 6 PM. They were still there at well after five I wind up being charged $66 for two sandwiches and a couple drinks very disappointed and miserable experience would not recommend anyone eat here ownership needs to figure out what exactly is going on when they're not there because it's obvious this couple did not care. Ordered online and apparently if you select the ingredients you want but they're already in the item description, it'll remove those items which makes absolutely ZERO sense. I selected Russian dressing and Swiss cheese and it came without either. Called asked asked what happened and got no solid answer, no apology and was hung up on. I have ordered take out for holidays for many years. This year for the new year Barry's was highly recommended as I was looking for a change. To start ordering through them was easy and very helpful on how much food...we had the brisket, turkey, stuffing, kugel, knishes, kreplach, potato latkes....just to name some of the food. Everything was delicious and every person was talking about how delicious the food was!!!! I have since had their tuna which is great, cut meats, and other items. I know Barry's has been around a long time but the food is great! Service is excellent and a pleasure to work with.
