My daughter loves making lists of things for us to do when I'm visiting her in Mass. and one of those things was getting breakfast here in Newton. There's almost something cozy about a place like this. Knotty P. has all the diner signs: worn counter, people yapping, the waitress taking orders non-stop, booths aren't huge, aisles are tiny (good luck getting to your seat) and the special scrape sound of the large metal spatula touching the steel flattop. If you don't mind sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with the regulars, then the counter is your spot. The only 2 seats available were at the counter and we snagged them. The breakfast potatoes are exactly what you want them to be: crispy-edges and golden- these have a little heat kick- not too much- but just enough to keep you going for another bite. As non-meat eaters, we appreciated how the cook keeps the sausages in their own territory (something is something I guess) from the omelettes, pancakes, etc. Then there's the energy- fast and a little loud in the best way. I would give a zero review if I could. This place is gross, unsanitary. They even are deceptive charging you too. Prices are reasonable, but over charge you and over based on menu. I'll never visit again... place needs a full re-do. The two brothers are gross dressed running grill in dirty clothes. I am never visiting. Don't order ice coffee... rip off and menu says free coffee but appears extra and no credit for the hot coffee? I questioned the bill why charged 4.50 or more for a 10 oz with ice Ice coffee... she said charged a flavored price??? No flavor... then she lower to 3.95... still a rip off ... con job add ons... never seeing me again .. Toast says including in price.. then 50 cents add on for English muffin? No mention on menu ... A nice family owned business that serves home style inexpensive yummy food with a very local atmosphere and New England sports centered theme. The home fries and pancakes are very good. There can be a small line around 12pm on weekends but service is very quick. read more

Knotty Pine was a staple each time I had an early ultrasound at the hospital. The interior was reminiscent of an old fashioned diner though a bit tight with only a handful of tables. The food was consistently tasty and the service was great. We loved the breakfast burrito and chocolate chip pancakes. It is a cash only business though so be prepared. read more

Eh. First, the mom owner is so nice. Service was good overall. The food, however, was bland. The eggs didn't look or taste like real eggs. The booth seats are so uncomfortable. You are in an awkward position for the entire time and can feel the movements of the person behind you. The place didn't seem particularly clean. The cook is on his phone, then goes and toasts and butters bread with the same hands. No handwashing or gloves. Also, these are the same dirty hands that are used to wipe down the countertops. Solid standard diner-style breakfast with incredible home fries! They have both indoor (tables and counter) and outdoor seating. It is cash only with an ATM on the premises. The menu is small but comprehensive. You're not getting fruit or salad on the side here, and you're not getting a latte. What you are getting are the best home fries ever. Service is quick and no-nonsense, which I love. I had the #6 breakfast which is scrambled eggs with onion, pepper, and ham, with home fries and an english muffin. The scramble was good, nothing to write home about, but the home fries...I am usually a hash browns person, and the home fries here are more like a smashed and crispy home fries that tastes like it's grilled in bacon fat. In other words, they're almost like a delicious hash brown! It's relaxed, friendly, very affordable, a welcome departure from all the pretentious brunch places I've been dragged to over the last few years. Get the home fries. read more

Very underwhelming establishment. Service is fine. But the food is grade c. The guy that cooks the food there looks cocky but doesn't back it up like cooking good food. I went in for a cheeseburger and it was so lame. The french fries were good but the burger was just not great quality beef and very thin patty the hamburger bun was not stale but it wasn't fresh. It was very mediocre. I ordered eggs over easy, ham and got something like hash browns. A lot of the food was pretty flavorless. The ham was deli ham (what restaurant does that for their breakfasts). I came here with two friends right after the lunch hour and thankfully didn't have to wait at all to get seated. The service was quick and so was the time it took for us to get our food. I got an eggs florentine and although the hollandaise was pretty good, the spinach was still cold when it was served to me. I tried to pull off the remaining spinach but I ordered the florentine because I really wanted more vegetables so it basically defeated the purpose for ordering what I did. I tried one of my friend's pancakes and those were tasty! I also didn't expect the home fries to be cooked in what tasted like bacon grease... I don't like bacon. I heard such good things about this place so I'm sad to be a little let down, but overall pretty standard breakfast spot. read more

Fading unfortunately. Knotty Pine used to be my default breakfast and lunch place like you read about, for over 15 years. Over the past couple of years, the food quality has dropped. The hamburgers used to be decent, hand-formed and reasonably generous patties cooked to order, on a buttered, toasted bun, as stated on the menu. The coffee was poured into at least a warm cup and refill top-offs as the servers made the rounds. Pleasant place with servers to match. This time and the last, the patties were the boxed kind, uniformly round and flat. A half inch smaller than the bun. Each time, the bun was cold, as if it were taken out of the refrigerator an hour before maybe, but cold in the middle, and assembled as-is, not toasted as advertised. The coffee was poured into a cold cup. Not even room temperature. The last time this happened, I sent it back, a bit of indifference at best, (I do not want to project that the staff was annoyed, though it was tapering off from busy). Came back toasted but the burger was cold by then. (General rule of thumb: Send food back to the cook only at your risk. Sent it back twice is at your peril.) This last time, today, same presentation, though when I ordered, I read off the menu verbatim, with, "I like how you toast the buns, here" to that effect. I Just ate it, paid, and left. I know it may sound petty, but when you go out for lunch or breakfast, it ought to be at least with the care you would do for yourself at home and if it is on the menu, at least do that much. LETS GET KNOTTY I love a good local gem. This place is a classic breakfast diner with all the basic breakfast egg combinations. I can simply walk in and grab a spot at the counter. I've actually eaten here twice now and I've enjoyed both visits. This place has a lot of regulars and everyone seems to know each other here. I'm fine with that because no one treated me like I didn't belong. Sometimes the places that are full of regulars don't take kindly to strangers like me. I also loved listening to all of the stories being told. The breakfast menu is simple. They have eggs anyway with bacon, ham, sausage and/or potatoes. Basically you just need to pick the combination you want. I appreciate a good fried egg but I'm an omelette guy when traveling. I decided to order the Knotty Pine Omelette which had Swiss cheese, bacon and tomatoes. I also ordered my hash browns well done and the cook made them perfectly. I really loved that my English muffin came pre-buttered. There's nothing like hot melted butter mixing into the nooks and crannies of an English muffin. It's the little things like this that make me happy. The coffee is good too and my cup never sat empty. That's another benefit of sitting at the counter and eating. I'm so happy I found this place. The prices are great and you'll get a delicious classic breakfast. I can understand why this place is full of regulars. If I actually lived here in town then I'd be dining here weekly. While on travel in the area I stopped by this Quintessential New England diner. The first thing that somewhat surprised me was the size. . Basically just enough room for a counter (with seats) and a row of booths along the other wall. Every meal (almost) was served with potato hash and coffee/tea. I got the western omelette while I was there. . Don't expect a pretty omelette, but it was good. Bread was buttered pretty well by default so if that isn't what you want - tell them. I really liked the experience of this place and thought it was a lot better than trying the restaurant at the hotel or a random dunkin doughnuts (which were everywhere). read more

I like an early breakfast and found Knotty Pine Cafe perfect. Great food and service. There was free parking out front, and the interior was welcoming. I love the classic look of the knotty pine paneling, Formica counter banded in stainless steel, and stools with stainless steel banding to match the counter. Sports photos and pennants decorate the walls and add a fun, homey touch. I had delicious French toast with crispy bacon served to me at my seat at the counter by the owner. She said she is 79 years and owes her longevity to coming to work every day. She made my day! read more

Visiting Boston and wanted to eat local. If you plan to come here on the weekend be prepared to wait. This is a homy small quaint place. There's is about 7-8 tables and about 12 seats on the counter. The young girls the are waiting tables are busting their behinds. We went on a Saturday am about 10 am waited about 20-25 min once seated. We got coffee, which was slightly strong but good and ordered. The menu is eggs, pancakes, combos and lunch items too. I really wanted corned beef but it wasn't the right day and tomato juice but the didn't offer that. The food came out pretty quickly for it being busy. We ordered the Auburndale burger, Knotty Pine club, BLT wrap and after reading everyone's reviews, we got a side of hash browns - best decision of the day! We live about 20 minutes away so we were a bit worried that the bun of the burger would be soggy, but it wasn't. Score! We ordered two sandwiches with chips, otherwise they'd come with fries. There is something about going somewhere that is frequented by the locals, doesn't have a ton of seating space, and you are treated like family. We were on our way out to Western Mass for some hiking, and we decided to give Knotty Pine a shot for breakfast. We were glad we did! A sign outside the restaurant proclaimed the special to be a corned beef hash and cheddar omelet, served with toast, and that sounded delicious to me. It did not disappoint. The omelet was a nice size, and it was absolutely stuffed with corned beef and cheese. Each bite was very hearty, and the flavor was delicious. There were other omelets ordered from the regular menu, and they also received praise from those eating them. Knotty Pine was a great way to start the day, and I hope to get the opportunity soon to return! read more
