Off the bat, the ambience of this place is superb. When we dine in we love to visit places that are thoughtfully thought out. Why spend a lot of money eating at an establishment that doesn't enhance the experience? The food also was flavorful and the passion fruit margaritas was superb. I love margaritas but hate it when it's made with a pre-made mix. (It should be a crime.) Barteco uses high quality tequila and freshly squeezed juice that way a margarita should be made. For the food, I got 3 tacos (ahi-tuna, prime beef, sesame ribeye), my wife got the ahi-tuna rice entree, and for our two daughters they shared the quesadillas from the kids menu. Our favorite was definitely the ahi-tuna. One warning is that the portions are quite small, but they do tell you on the menu! However, the prices are reasonable for such quality and tasty food! The kids entree was also sub $10 which is rare to find AND it actually was a decent sized portion and had left overs. On top of that the hostess and server were friendly and knowledgeable. Really loved this restaurant and vibe! We came around 5pm and it was too busy so we got seated immediately. The interior was decorated fresh coastal vibes, I'd imagine Newport Beach restaurant vibes. Our waiter was very nice and friendly. He explained their ordering process which is to make on this sheet what you want and to put this card up if you need the waiter for anything else. I loved that they had an organized process. They have a QR code on the table you can order from and pay. But if you order using the paper sheet they provide you, you can't pay from the QR code. We started off with margaritas (regular and spicy) which were amazing! For an appetizer we got the pork tamale. Really good flavor maybe too much masa though. It was a thick layer. The green verde sauce on top was delicious. The tacos are small and are about 3-5 bites so you want to order more than 3 in my opinion which was perfect because I wanted to try a few different ones. First time being at this location, since it was formally known as black sheep. Went on a little date outing for some lunch and I had to say the ambience and obviously location is great. Now keep in mind. This is Saturday and we were still able to get a parking space due to how saturated this area can be. Our waitress and service was amazing! We started off with cocktail drinks, which staff gave amazing recommendations. Depending on your taste in my opinion, you can't go wrong. Appetizers came out quick and hot! At this point, the conversation, the food and the drinks were all amazing! Bar taco has a great variety of different flavors for tacos, but the sides and even for me the salsa and chips were amazing! Everything is easy to share and it's just a nice relaxing atmosphere. Make sure to check out the roof rooftop! Keep in mind rooftop has separate menu items! Unfortunately, we did have a little bump in the road when our main entree/food was 45 to 15 minutes late coming to the table and really cold. When we brought our issue to our waitress, she handled it very professionally and relayed to their manager Ryan. And this people is what can make and break a restaurant especially a recently newer restaurant. The manager, Ryan was very kind to come and address the issue and take accountability for it being late to our table after multiple request. Even took it further as to cover our whole tab, though I insisted I at least pay for the things that did come out on time. He show amazing professionalism and was very personable. I had a good overall meal here but a pretty big mistake that makes me cautious to recommend Bartaco. My friend and I came in later on a Saturday night and saw the restaurant busy but not packed. I really like the interior design (warm and natural), and the seating was comfortable. We started off with the taco teaser and really liked everything it came with. The guac tasted fresh, the plantains were nicely caramelized, the cucumber salad was fresh and had a bit of a kick, and the esquites really stuck out for the great flavor and creaminess. The pineapple pisco punch I got was yummy, too. For entrees, we both got a cauliflower taco and a Brussels sprouts taco. I added a mushroom taco, a side of the seasonal fruit (pineapple with tajin in this case), and some pinto beans that I ended up taking home for lunch the next day. The pineapple tasted fresh. It was absolutely loaded with Tajin, which I didn't mind, but if you like a lighter touch, I'd suggest asking for it on the side. We both thought the cauliflower tacos were the best. The flavors were nicely balanced, and the pomegranate seeds were a great addition. I thought the mushroom taco was just meh -- it just tasted like average mushroom and nothing else. The Brussels sprouts tacos are where it gets complicated. We both thought the sprouts themselves could have been crispier and that the sauce was tasty but applied too heavily. The big issue came when my friend found a whole shrimp in the last bite of her taco. This was unpleasant for her as a vegetarian, but we were both anxious at the thought of how this could have caused an anaphylactic reaction in someone with a shrimp allergy or violated someone's religious practices. I get that kitchen mistakes happen, but seeing them happen with an ingredient that can be extremely important for some folks to avoid was disconcerting. Our waitress was great about it when we pointed it out; we watched her walk the plate over directly to a manager. The manager came over, made sure there weren't any health concerns with my friend, and apologized. So we were surprised when the bills came out and hers still had the taco on it. Honestly, I am not the type of person who expects freebies for a typical mistake, but many places I've been would have comped more than the taco for an error that violated a customer's dietary restrictions. So them not even making sure it was off the bill was a real surprise. So this is a bit of a tricky one. I enjoyed the food and ambiance, but again, I'm just spooked by the ingredient error. Our boss took us to lunch. We picked Bartaco for our lunch date rondavue! We headed straight in and waited for our counterparts. I had a coconut mojito and my coworker had a martini. When our crew arrived we sat outside to enjoy the nice weather. We asked to see if the roof top was available to sit. It was not. What a bummer! Everything was tantalizing from the rice bowl to the appetizer platter to the oyster tacos. You heard right, oyster taco. There was a lot of munching and crunching around the patio. The only down fall was the pork belly taco. They were overdone. We told the waitress but she did really care. We did not make a big stink about it either. Bartaco replaced it with huge baskets for lighting and gorgeous enormous colorful photographs on the walls. Kate gave the best service. There were good and bad parts for the food. They changed their tortillas which is an improvement, but the guacamole and all of their veggies have no flavor at all. For example, the spinach in the Korean ribeye bowl tasted like it was just blanched in water and put in the bowl. It would have tasted better mixed with some sesame oil, salt, pepper, and a dash of sugar. The best items were the green salsa with chips (it's different because it's giant circles that you have to break yourself), and the beef tacos were really delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by bar taco. We went on a Thursday afternoon for happy hour which runs till 6 PM. Happy hour consist of a couple drinks, although surprisingly the margarita is not on their list. There's about six food items. You can also choose from all small bites. The tuna over fried rice was my favorite app, following by the corn. Food comes out as it's ready so people at your table get things at different times. Bartaco is a fun, fresh spot that's great for a night out with friends or a casual date. I've been to the new Jax location a couple times, and the vibe is always solid. It's definitely trendy -- and not just in looks. Each table has a card you flip when you're ready for your server, and they give you a quick rundown when you sit down. It's a more laid-back service style, which I personally like, but it might not be everyone's thing. Food-wise, I recommend it more for the apps, drinks, and sides than the tacos. Jax has a ton of amazing taco spots, and these are more Baja/modern style -- not traditional or authentic Mexican (and to be fair, Bartaco doesn't claim to be). On my most recent visit, I skipped tacos and made a meal out of sides and apps, which hit the spot. Drinks are a strong point. The grapefruit ginger agua fresca was so refreshing, and made with fresh juice -- non-alcoholic, but would be great with a splash of vodka. The green margarita has been a go-to, and even the bourbon cocktail was great (surprising for me since I'm usually not a bourbon drinker). It had a light cinnamon/fall flavor without being sweet. Menu favorites: Ahi tuna app Esquites (corn off the cob) Chips + dips Churros -- not greasy, slightly doughy, and perfectly cooked. I'd skip the Hershey's-style chocolate sauce and ask for two sides of that creamy white dip instead. So good. Parking will be difficult but I'm sure you remember this from when this spot was Black Sheep. My advice - go early if you are trying to make a weekend trip of this. The bar/inside fills up very fast and can be kinda loud. The rooftop on a Friday night was actually quite peaceful. But I recommend the Taco Teaser which includes esquites, chips, guac, plantains and cucumber so you get to try a little bit of everything. But the portion size is small...you'll leave hungry. Before moving to JAX, we lived in Westchester County NY, near the original Bar Taco in Port Chester. And while we loves the place for its quality food, tasty cocktails, and fun atmosphere, we approached the new branch in Jacksonville with much trepidation. The food is better than ever, the cocktails are crafted from fresh ingredients, and the vibe and service remain outstanding. We were greeted by manager LeVar, a super friendly guy who moved from Bar Taco in Atlanta to be a part of the team in JAX. He made us fell at home and shared some recommendations regarding the various cocktails. He was so genuine and happy to hear that we were enjoying our meal, taking great pride in both the food and service. For cocktails, we tried several, and they were all outstanding: the citrus in every drink at Bar Taco uses freshly squeezed juice and you can taste the difference. The food was outstanding, even better than at the original. The tacos are very small (2-3 bites each), which is fun so you can mix and match. We got the fried oyster, ribeye, duck (incredible), fish, and chile-lime shrimp (spicy). All were 10 out of 10. I've been to several locations and have found its food is consistent, it curates a great vibe, and it's super quick and convenient with its QR code ordering system. We had the Retro Pork Pastor Taco, roasted duck taco, Summer duo tacos, pork belly tacos, the duck taco, lobster esquites and the Ahi Tuna crispy rice bowl, along with a watermelon Mint Margarita, and a tequila old fashion. None of the dishes disappointed. Everything was great, tasteful, and the portions were not too big. Our waiter Emily was very knowledgeable and sweet and made great recommendations as well. The restaurant is very spacious, great for day drinking, lunch, dinner or just to eat. I will definitely be going back. read more
