We always stop at Bartels Giant Burger whenever we travel on Interstate 5 beacuse we have never been disappointed. The burgers are old-fashioned...delicious and large. The service couldn't be any better. Always friendly and helpful. The prices are also "old-fashioned" meaning you get more than you paid for. On our last visit, we got to meet the owner, Eric. This was an unexpected bonus! Eric was a hoot! He gave us a history of the restaurants and his family businesses. They are strong supporters of the community. Obviously, one of these days Bartels won't be there but until that day, we will continue to stop there for one of the last of a dying breed...home made burgers and outstanding, friendly service. I read the good reviews so we stopped to get lunch. We ordered two burgers and a fry. There were three groups sitting in the store eating and a truck driver outside waiting for his order. The blonde woman at the register was rubbing her face and touching her hair while taking our order. After we paid, she went to the fridge and took out two patties and threw them on the grill, she then went over and put fries from a bag into the fryer. She then went over and stacked the truck drivers burger up and wrapped it up and then played on her cell phone. This entire time without washing her hands once or putting on gloves. We asked her to put new buns on ours while wearing gloves and she said she doesn't wear gloves. The brown haired woman working the fryer said she was cleaning the grill. We asked to just cancel the order. As we work in food service ourselves, we know this is a health violation. The blonde hair woman began canceling the order, they both said they would eat the two burgers being made and the blonde haired woman went and sat on top of the counter and started looking at her phone. The entire time she has still not washed her hands. We left without food and when we checked our credit card app, we discovered we were charged twice for this order and credited only once. We are now disputing the charge with the credit card company. Neither employee apologized for the situation. Stay far away from this place unless you want to get sick. Pretty sad as we were looking for a mom and pop burger shop to support instead of a chain. If I could give it negative stars, I would! read more

Ordered online because the restaurant has signs saying order online. I get an email that says by food will be ready in 15 minutes. This is at 12:08 pm. I go to the restaurant and wait in line. At 12:27 I get to the front and was told rudely that there weren't any orders under my name. I told them I put it in online and the worker "oh, online, it'll be a while", and grabbed the printed ticket that was sitting in the printer with my order on it. Finally got my order at 12:45, and they gave me one burger even though I ordered and paid for two. Apparently reading is not a strong suit. Don't give time estimates that you can't keep, don't say you do online orders when you never check your printer, and pay better attention. read more

We drove up to Black Butte Lake area to pick up a motor and saw this place when we got off the freeway. We are always looking forward to a good burger and there were quite a few people eating outside so we asked the people we were getting the motor from and they said Bartels had good burgers so we stopped in on the way back. We saw from the sign in the window you could order online so we did that and waited in the car for about 10-15 minutes. When I went in to get the burgers they were calling my name. Staff was friendly and things were kept pretty neat and clean. I liked that they even had dog bowls filled with water outside for people who had dogs and didn't want to leave them chained up in the car. Are you wondering about the burgers??? LOL they were alright. There was nothing memorable about them but you could tell they use good quality meat (Harris Ranch) and the ingredients (buns, lettuce, onion, tomato) were fresh. I had bacon on my burger which was pretty fatty and I wish there had been some kind of special sauce as the only thing I could taste was mustard. We would probably eat there again if we were in the area and didn't want your typical fast food joints but if there were other options available I might reconsider. read more

The food is good but the prices are way too high! There is very limited space to sit inside so unless it's a nice day, it's a bit miserable. Service is typically good but ordering online is sort of a nightmare especially if they're closed as the system does not tell you they're closed and it will allow you to make an order anyway. Not sure if they fixed this issue or not but we haven't been back in over a year. read more

I usually try to patronize smaller mom and pop places like this instead of going to the traditional fast food restaurants because you usually get a better meal at the smaller locally owned places in my experience but this place in a BIG exception. Save yourself the time and money. Do NOT go here, just go down the road to Mickey D's or BK, etc. You will save a ton of money and get the same quality food or even better perhaps. My burger was sloppy and greasy, I got about 6 onion rings with my order (from fryer grease that smelled like it needed to be changed a week ago) and a kids cup of lemonade that tasted off to me and I had to pay $27 for all this including tip (*because otherwise they may mess with your food if you don't leave 20-25% tip for standing behind the counter and handing you a tray) I just really feel like I got scammed bigtime by this place and since I can't get my money back, and I can't get more food; all I can do is write this review and hope that I can scam them out of some money in return. I was fortunate enough to know the Bartel family and the time, effort and love they have put in their businesses My husband and I stopped by the Corning store the other day. The patio was nicely decorated and well stocked with niceties. It was a bit dry and Smokey out but if you wish to eat there, outside it is ! The menu is basic and apparently fluid since it was written on paper and taped to the plastic divider between the cash register and person ordering. My husband is a basic eater. Hamburgers and sandwiches are his favorites. It takes a lot to disappoint him with food. I ordered a cheeseburger with Mayo, mustard and onions, Tater tots. He ordered a Giant Burger with everything and fries. It was lunch time and they were busy. Our order took about 13 minutes to the table. It was definitely hot. Very hot! The tots and fries were golden, hot and delicious. The burgers got mixed up so my 1/4 lb was put where the 1/3 lb went. Meaning everything was wrong. We dealt with it and thanks to my husband, nothing went to waste. While the food was fresh and hot, it didn't live up to the price. For the two of us, 2 burgers, 2 fries or tots and 2 drinks were just under $25.00. I like burgers but I would rather spend $25.00 on a food I love, in a restaurant I love, with a person I love. It's nice to see the Bartel name, but doubtful we will be back. read more

When you imagine a classic roadside burger stand, this is the place you envision. It's a building that looks like it's been there forever with a big patio and a bunch of outdoor seating. The menu is simple and straightforward: burgers, fries, shakes. We both went with the Giant Burger and fries. The burger was honestly one of the tastiest I've had in a long time. A perfect medley of juicy beef, sauce and crisp, fresh toppings. The fries were also crisp and tasty. I give them props for pushing their special sauce, but I still prefer ketchup. We ate on the road and the only downside was that I wished we could return for a shake. If we ever pass through this area again, I'll be sure to stop in! read more

They have surprisingly have several vegetarian and vegan options- veggie burger, grilled cheese, and beyond burgers. The onion rings were cooked to perfection- some of the best I've had. The veggie burger was very good with fresh tomato and lettuce. My sister got the chicken sandwich and was happy. We stopped here on our way back from the Oregon coast coming home to Sacramento. We ordered a giant burger and onion rings. The giant burger was not giant as we were expecting. It was a regular size hamburger. Decent hand made burger. The onion rings were yummy and you do get plenty of those. We also ordered shakes. They were a basic shake. Was a little disappointed in service. Didn't get a warm welcome or one smile. Staff were not friendly. It took about 20-25 mins to get our food. So if you're looking for a place to grab a quick bite on highway 5 I would not stop here. They weren't busy at 11:30am. Hate to imagine the lunch rush. I absolutely love Bartel's but I must say this was the worst burger, fries and milkshake/malt I've EVER had!!! The meat was so over cooked and dry, the tater tots fell apart, the fries were good and the malt oh the malt... there was so much it was on the bottom (see picture) into to mention for 1 giant burger and 2 regular burgers meals was a whopping $60!!! The service was excellent, super friendly employees that went above and beyond. It's so nice to see places like this still open and the love they have for their customers shows in every way. The burgers are quality Harris Ranch beef made to order to your temp preference with fresh veggies. The fries were crisp, fresh & tasty.
