We were given a window of 11 a.m through 12:30 p.m. I rescheduled a couple of meetings at work and worked from home in the morning, thinking I would go to work after lunch. I am extremely HAPPY with the work that has been done for me over the past several years by Bartlett.  I only trust Sean Davis and his crew to touch my trees.  I have seen too many neighbors of mine have their trees hacked badly and then have to live with them for years until they grow out (or die).  What was also so special to me this year is that the guys came out three times to do the work because of the emergency situation with my gigantic Chinese Elm and a huge branch that was ripped out of the crown of my oak tree during the remarkable wind storm a month ago. They first came out during the bad storm that came a few days later to deal with the oak branch and to cut enough weight out of the Elm tree so it would not blow over onto my neighbor's home.  It was not an easy job! (This was after they had done another emergency job first thing in the morning. I know they were tired by the end of the day!)  The crew came out the next time to take the whole Elm tree down, which was a big job because of its massive size.  They came last week a third time and finished the routine pruning, and my yard looks healthy and great. I've been a Bartlett customer for the past four years and found their services to be exceptional. They were prompt, courteous, and offered fair rates. We've had them trim our large trees annually and once had them remove a tree. As the other review notes, they do a great job of trimming trees without butchering them. Their process is to visit your property then send you a written quote for the services. If you accept the quote, they schedule an appointment to complete the work. Unfortunately, my love for Bartlett turned sour this year. Our former rep is no longer there and apparently they've went through staffing changes. In December 2007, we had one of their new representatives visit our property to provide a quote. The quote we received was for $450, -- this is more than a 200% increase from prior years! We called them three times in the weeks that followed to inquire about the significant increase. Each time we received the admin who stated a rep would call us back. No one ever returned our calls. So, after a couple months we stopped calling and assumed we'd have to find a new tree service. At the end of April I receive a call from Bartlett asking if we planned to move ahead with our quote. I tell the person our story and she apologizes stating that she'll have someone call us right away. She noted that they had some staffing changes and that this could have caused the communication issues. Several more days go by and no response. At this point, I'm tired of how horrible our trees are looking (it's now been nearly 1 1/2 years since they were last trimmed) and I am now determined to get an answer. I search online and locate the email addresses for the two Bartlett reps. I sent them them a list of how much we paid for each of the prior years and ask for justification of the current quote. (it pays to keep your old invoices!) I received an email to acknowledge it and then they responded the following day stating it was a mistake due to a new rep. The rep provided an adjusted amount which was still a 20-30% increase. I agreed to the price and asked for them to call me to schedule an appointment. A week went by and no further contact, so I pinged the rep once again as I planned to be traveling in June and needed to know when the appointment would occur. He promised an appointment in May and said he'd have someone contact me to schedule it. Another week goes by. I decided to wait until the end of this week before calling. So, this morning I'm in the kitchen at 8am happily making my morning coffee. I hear a noise out front and go see what it is. In front of my house is a big Bartlett truck and woodchipper. WTF? A guy comes to my door and says he's here to trim my trees. He was nice and it's not his fault, so I didn't complain. Normally, I would have prepped the backyard to remove any random dog poo but since I wasn't given notice I figured he'd just have to dodge it. From beginning to end, it's taken 6 months to get my trees trimmed. I am so disappointed in the staffing changes which had led to the demise of a once great business. Once my invoice is paid for this trimming, we will no longer use their services. read more

We had a mysterious tree that was huge, covered with flower pods and literally rained flowers and sap all over our driveway and cars nonstop every summer. I'm "pro-tree" so I didn't want to cut it down, but something had to be done. I had several quotes from other companies that were not only more expensive, but didn't seem to have any idea of what kind of tree, etc. Scott came out and thoroughly examined the tree, diagnosed the problem, researched the species (it was from Australia) and emailed later with a quote. They ended up coming out twice to get the service just right and charged a very fair price. I am thrilled with the quality of the job as well as the service, and I will have them back for the other trees in the fall. read more

I worked with Bartlett Tree Service and their arborist Kevin V. for almost a year to have three large trees removed from my property. It was a long process with a lot of buracey working with the city for permits. I found Kevin to be very helpful even though we had not given Bartlett the contract yet. we were only in obtaining permit stage and Kevin had to give an opinion for the permit to the city. After almost a year and finally getting the permit I negotiated price for the job and even though it was a little higher than other quotes because of the diligence and professionalism I gave the job to Bartlett and never regretted it once. The crew was courteous, clean and very professional. This job took almost one week as I had three trees, one over 100 feet high and the crew cleaned up at the end of every day. I would use Bartlett again without hesitation. the only negative I can say is the woman who answered the phone was a little rude every time I called. Fortunately I didn't have to call the office more than a few times. Kevin V. truly made a very difficult process much easier and positive as getting tree permits from San Jose city is very difficult. read more

It was very easy communicating with them. They had someone come over to give me a quote pretty quickly (some companies made me wait 2 weeks or longer in order to just receive a quote), he sent back the estimate quickly, the quote was competitive, and when I was ready to schedule, they were able to accommodate me within a very reasonable time. On the day of the work, they came on time, everyone was nice and courteous, they finished the job quickly and cleaned up well all the mess. The reason I'm deducting 1 star is that I felt they cut a little less than what I had discussed with the guy who came over for the estimate. In our opinion, Bartlett Tree Experts did an exceptional job. We have several very large pines in our back yard. We called Bartlett Tree Experts, so we could check on the health of the trees. Sean came out and gave us a detailed outline of the health of not only our pines but other trees as well. He was knowledgeable and professional. He created a plan of work that included work that should be done as soon as possible and other work to be done in the future. I was customer for more than 5 years, unfortunately , i can just barely gave them a 1 star and as of today, i am no longer a customer. I started to use them during their old manager Kevin's time who left about 4-5 years ago, he was pretty responsive and he actually saved my tree's life and because of this , i have held great deal of gratitude for the this company, that is the reason, i have stayed with them for more than 5 years given the bad service. The treatment they do for the tree is no problem, but they have terrible customer service on scheduling and follow up. Each year, for the tree in my back yard, i always schedule and prepays for fertilization, especially, i need the treatment to be done before the weather gets too cold, to help my tree thru the frosting time. However, Once I paid, if i do not call them repeatedly to follow up and asking the treatment schedule, they completely forget about me, and each year, i have to call at least 3-4 times, so they will come to do the treatment . The kind of treatment i need for my tree is season sensitive, it needs to be done by certain month, and i have used every possible way to follow up with them, such as sign their paper with date, and sending emails asking for when they are coming, also repeatedly calling them. For all the years i have been with them, they have not called me or emailed me even 1 time to schedule treatment time with me by themselves . I always have to chase them down, and i need to beg for them to do the treatment for my tree. This is beyond frustrating as it is usually week after week i need to remember it and waiting them to get back. Same thing happen this year, I had asked and paid for treatment for my tree in last Nov. after they finished Jan one, and there suppose to be 2nd one after 6 months, they told me they actually see the pending work order for it, except no one follow up or call me to schedule it. since June, I have been repeatedly called them and until this day, it was still not done and no one call me back or follow up on it at all. So basically, if i forget about it , they will too! They do not care at all. After N times phone call, and asking and complaining for the same thing , i think i am finally done with them. They have used up all my patience and gratitude i had for them at last. i think my years of business and tolerances are more than enough to pay for what Kevin has done for my tree. They obviously have too much business to care about few hundreds of dollars treatment job for an old customer. I am moving my business to else where. read more

I have now needed tree removal twice in the last year - and Sean at Bartlett has been great. I appreciate the detailed quote AND the assurance that the workers are fully insured. On both occasions the Bartlett team was on time, very efficient, and did a great job on cleaning up the debris after cutting down the trees. Bartlett's are our tree experts for life! Our family has been so pleased with the service and level of professionalism with Bartlett's. They are so knowledgeable and always prompt, even with the multiple services we have had over the years. Most recently we had a couple of large camphor trees that desperately needed pruning, and oak tree infected with beetles and multiple citrus trees which were infected with leaf miners. While pruning one of the camphors, they noticed roots that were inhibiting the growth of the trees and would eventually choke off the primary life system. They corrected it and the camphor trees look really great with all the pruning. Not to mention we are so glad to be rid of the pests before they destroy all the citrus trees. Last fall who can forget the very kind service of Barlett's participation in making a making a wish come true! Barlett's provided services free of charge to donate towards a little boys Make a Wish tree house. They significantly pruned and treated an avocado tree, which others recommended removing. Terrible Customer Service. Did not show up for the appointment which was a 8 to 10 am window. I took 2 hours of my vacation time to wait for Sean to come out for evaluation of my tree. The receptionist told me I was the first appointment of the day so they should be there closer to 8ish. I waited and waited and when it got to be 9:45, I called and said I had to leave for work soon and where was he? The receptionist said she would call him right away and find out where he was and call me right back. I never heard back from her. I called 6 times and no one would pick up the phone. I then called her when I got to work and asked what happened to him and she said he got stuck somewhere helping grind a tree stump! So, he could have at least called me and told me he was tied up and I could have rescheduled. I will never use them or recommend them again! . read more

I am very happy with Bartlett Tree Service. Scott came out and gave me an estimate. He was very nice and polite. He was very patient with my multiple questions over email. He took care of getting permission to put the trucks into the property of the business behind my house. When the crew arrived, it was headed up by Jim who is absolutely wonderful and very professional. I was home while they were trimming the tree. It is a huge tree so it took all day. Jim touched base with me several times during the day to give me status reports and explain what they were doing. The whole crew was very nice. I do not recommend Bartlett Tree Experts! They came to fertilize my fruit trees (6 of them) and Shawn Davis sold me the idea of "deep fertilization" for my birch trees. Within 8 months all my birch trees died and my fruit trees flowered proliferally however, the fruit was so abundant that it appreared the trees were stressed and fruit was extremely small to point of non-edible. This was first time this ever happened to my trees. I spoke with Shawn about my observations and requested help in now removing dead birch trees. After months of negotiation he won't take responsibility for death of birch trees and price he quoted me to remove them is unrealistic! I've chosen Bellizzi Tree service who gave me a reasonable quote even though they didn't cause death. read more

I have been beyond impressed with the professionalism and quality of service I have received from Bartlett. I run a non profit that maintains six native gardens in a SAN Jose park and we desperately needed mulch to keep the weeds down. Even though their was no money in it for them other than a place to dump their green waste, they were courteous, friendly and brought me a gorgeous load of finely chopped wood chips. I've now used them for five mulch deliveries in our park and the quality of the mulch has been nearly as nice as the kind you'd buy from a landscape supply yard that would've cost thousands of dollars in this quantity. The Bartlett team from the receptionist to the field team have been outstanding and we will be sure to continue using them. read more

I had a tree with an obvious fungal infection, and called Bartlett on the recommendation of a landscaper. No trouble scheduling the appointment, and Frank came out within a few days (on time) and examined the tree...gave me some bad news (tree was probably doomed, and should probably be removed soon before it falls and causes property damage), but didn't even charge me for the visit. While I can't say I've had a *lot* of experience with Bartlett so far, my initial impression is definitely "friendly and professional", and I'll probably be calling them again. read more

Called Bartlett Tree Experts to remove a fallen oak tree due to the recent windy storms. One of there arborist (Kevin), came out to look over the job. I also asked him to quote some other trees for trimming. A week went by, and I still have not seen any quotes from them, so I decided to give Kevin a call. He told me he will have a quote out to me that day. He finally gave me a quote that evening. WOW!!! I almost fell down when I saw how expensive they charged. It was $1,600 to chop and haul away. The tree already fell down. All they need to do was chop it up and haul it away. I decided to not use Bartlett and called in someone else. The other person charged me only $100 to chop and haul it away. The other person told me that they sold the oak wood. They got three (3) cords and sold it at $350 per cord. 5 stars for Bartlett Tree Experts and, specifically, for Sean Davis! While washing dishes today, I looked out my back window and saw that a very large, fruit-heavy branch on my apple tree had cracked at the trunk and was *this close* to snapping off and landing on my fence and adjacent orange tree. I started panicking because I didn't want the branch (or the fence) to fall on my small dogs or the kids next door. The branch needed to be removed ASAP, but I wanted to hire someone who knew what they're doing, so they wouldn't kill the tree. I wasn't sure who to call, so I contacted my local nursery (Almaden Valley Nursery) for a referral, and they recommended Bartlett. Within an hour of the time that I left a voice message, Sean showed up with a smile. He assessed the tree, and we spoke for a few minutes. Then he took out his tools, safely removed the branch, cut it down to smaller pieces, and stacked it neatly in the street for pick-up. Couldn't have been easier. And the best part? Sean didn't charge me! He said he likes to do "one kind thing each day." He could've easily taken advantage of my situation, but he didn't. For that, he deserves 5 stars + major karma points. I was initially impressed when Sean came out to give me a quote, but after a few weeks we still haven't been able to schedule a date to do the work. I feel a little disappointed because I now need to spend more time looking for someone to do the work, but at the same time I don't think it's a good idea to work with a company that can't schedule an appointment after several emails going back and forth. We use Bartlett for our regular tree service. Additionally, we had them take down some dead trees recently, one of them about 75 ft tall. We have found Frank, our arborist, to be expert in the care of our trees. All the workers are very knowledgeable, skilled at their jobs, and friendly. They protected and were careful with the surrounding plants and structures. There are certainly less expensive options than Bartlett, but we find Bartlett's expertise to be well worth it. read more

Bartlett is the premier tree care company, end of story. Their arborists are very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Each of my interactions with the company has been a breeze. We truly care about the health and well being of our trees and are willing to invest in keeping them healthy and beautiful. Unfortunately there are too many poor "tree care" companies out there that give the profession a bad name; in fact Bartlett is in a class of its own. I will continue to recommend Bartlett and their team of Arborist and crew to my friends and families. Safety is their goal and their results are by far superior to other companies in the area. I am very surprised to see some of the reviews online regarding Bartlett. My guess is that these people has bad experiences because they don't really care about their trees and are not willing to spend money to keep their trees healthy. Yes Bartlett is going to charge more than a company that is selling your firewood, because Bartlett is not in the firewood business, they are in the tree care business. read more
