Please be advised that a doctor who is a transfer from a different location (Central Park, closed down) was previously involved with a horrible situation involving my deceased German Shepherd named Logan. The doctor (Adrienne Gwin) carelessly misdiagnosed a deadly serious infection (Necrosis) that led to Logan's eventual death. Had Dr. Gwin sent us to the Emergency Center, and not prescribed a personal home treatment, I sincerely believe Logan would have survived. A necrotic injury is deadly serious (Google it) and any smart doctor knows this should never be treated at home, but requires immediate emergency care. In my strong opinion, I would avoid dealing with this doctor if at all possible. Dr. Gwin's judgement is not to be trusted. She believed that oral antibiotics from Walgreen's and a kitchen sink water sprayer were effective treatments for a necrotic leg injury. Beware. read more

Nicole is an exceptional vet tech that has helped me so much over the years, especially with his dental. I was so nervous having it done at such an advanced age but it all went so smoothly. I can't begin to express how great our experience here was today, even in the midst of a global pandemic! We adopted our dog, Max in March and were back and forth to our previous vet about once a week until today for issues with his skin. Every time we left our previous vet, I was left without answers and money (though I'd pay about a billion dollars to make sure my guy is happy and healthy.) This weekend, Max seemed extra uncomfortable and I noticed a bald patch on his back, so I decided to try a different veteranary practice. After some extensive googling, I found Westlake Animal Hospital and gave them a call. I was warmly greeted, and within seconds of chatting with the receptionist, I knew we were in good hands. We were able to get an appointment the very next day, and the new patient paperwork was easy to fill out online and asked a lot of detailed questions about my dog, which I appreciated. Since we weren't allowed into the building due to COVID-19, a vet tech came to our car to get Max. She was super friendly and down to earth and asked a bunch more detailed questions before taking him inside. About 20 minutes later, I received a call from the Vet, who diagnosed Max with a skin infection and got him on the right meds. She spent time explaining everything in detail and answering all of my questions. We left feeling very well taken care of, and will be loyal patients for life!! I love everything about this business. The receptionists are very kind as well as vet techs. They have regular appts. visits but they also have a Dr there that is for walk in emergency ect. so no matter what your animal is taken care of not turned away. My male cat was almost completely blocked it was from him having a urinary track infection. They immediately took care of him and started treatment as this is very dangerous for male cats. Dr Voelzel is a fantastic veterinarian. Debbie in the feline dept. is so good at answering questions and making suggestions. If it is something she feels would be better answered or needs to be discussed with the Dr she will say that. Dr Voelzel is excellent at returning calls. I swear I don't think the man sleeps! They have a separate entry for cats which makes going to the vet much less stressful for them AND ME ! as well as having their own room at the facility. Because everyone and everything is so calming my cats have no problem getting in their crates and coming to the office. They actually fall asleep coming and going. SO I GOT THAT GOING FOR ME WHICH IS NICE. They have a radiologist there, an internist, Dr's that specialize in different areas so I feel that when something is wrong there is group consult as far as treatments ect. I love that. They will tell you ballpark pricing of treatments and sometimes it's less then they quote. Their pricing is pretty good. Honestly I know I am gushing but to have 2 cats that like going there and as techs and dr say they love my 2 because they are so chill... and beautiful. but what owner doesn't think that already right? read more

My two doggies Ellie and Cooper have been patients here for years. The staff here at westlake animal hospital took my babies on during Covid and had no issue accommodating any need I had during that difficult time in terms of scheduling and making me feel comfortable just dropping them off to the vet techs in the parking lot. Since then I've had emergencies and also regular appointments in which they always answer the phone and make my needs feel seen. All the vets here are so good and the techs are all so nice and knowledgeable I would feel safe bringing any of my pets here for any need they have. I've had Westlake Animal Hospital take care of my dog for years, and I won't be coming back. I suffer from sticker shock every time I go there. Twenty eight dollars for a nail trim? Please. I also boarded my dog in their kennel as well. This was the last straw. Firstly there was a phone number you had to call instead of entering because of Covid - which I personally found ridiculous. I could literally hear people talking inside, and they never picked up the phone when I called the number. My dog smelled, and he always smells when I pick him up from the WAH kennel. The last straw was the amount of water he drank when he got home. He was clearly extremely thirsty. I will not be going back to Westlake Animal Hospital. The only reason for the three stars instead of one, is that they've been a dependable yet extremely expense vet through the years. read more

Our bulldog, Ellie, had been a client of WLAH for 8 years. This past Friday, I took her to see them because she was having trouble walking and seemed disoriented. After an x-ray, the vet told me he thought it was a pinched nerve in her neck that was affecting her legs. He put her on two pain medications and told us to crate her for 3 weeks. The next morning she was lying in a puddle of urine in intense pain, couldn't stand, much less walk and straining to defecate (which she couldn't). We had to bodily pull her out of the crate. She wouldn't eat or drink and when we finally got her to take one of her pain pills and drink a little water, she promptly threw up. Because WLAH is closed on Saturdays during the pandemic, we had to take her to an emergency vet who put her down that morning. When I called WLAH the following Monday, I told the receptionist that Ellie had been to see them on Friday and that we had to have her put down on Saturday. Her response was, "Oh, I'm sorry. I'll let the vet know." She didn't even bother to ask what happened or why we took this drastic move with one of their long-time clients who had just been to see them. It has been 3 days and no one has called to follow-up or find out any details. I guess when the $$$ train leaves the station, they figure they have more important things to worry about. If we ever get another dog, we will get another vet, as well. read more

Recently the practice manager, Jessica, has been an absolute angel helping me locate much-needed medication for my very ill dog. Went to Westlake Animal Hospital after our dog had a cough for a week or so. The vet saw her and didn't know what it was and our dog didn't cough much at the vet office so they asked us to send videos later. We sent videos multiple times. The vet called back once to tell us they didn't receive it. After we resent the videos, we never got a call back. A few weeks later, today, we were finally able to get another appointment at a different vet office and found out had to put down our dog. They didn't even know if she would live until tomorrow. Our family has been going to Westlake Animal Hospital for about a year and they always provide us with the best service any concerned pet parent could ask for. When you enter, the ladies at the front desk greet you with a warm welcome and give your pet some love. They ask you to get the weight of your pet on the scale and have treats available for dogs. The office is cozy and does not feel like an animal hospital. They have multiple couches to sit on as your wait for your room but we rarely have to wait as one is usually available upon our arrival. The vet tech come inside and you fill a sheet with questions about your pet and then the veterinarian comes in. They are all very nice and explain procedures and concerns to you well. They give you a phone call the next day to check in on your pet and if you do not answer, they leave a voicemail. We especially love Dr.Wenzel, she is always very happy to see our pets and remembers them from their previous visit. She has been so kind to recommend contacts of hers that specialize in ophthalmology for our blind dog that has diabetes. I always know we are in great hands coming here. The prices may be a bit higher than other places with just as equally great reviews but Westlake Animal Hospital is so close to Redbud Isle in case of an emergency and they have recently extended their weekday hours to 7pm and 8pm. This is NOT the standard at many other animal hospitals I've been to including VCA Arbor Animal Hospital and Manchaca Village Veterinary Care and Banfield. A previous review stated what I completely agree with: "These people are nice enough to your face, but certainly don't provide the level of care and attention that their prices would suggest." Don't be fooled by smiling faces and high prices.....you get much better care and service for far cheaper at other vets. Subpar Service : 1. Placed on hold for so long that the secretaries thought I was a new caller. Nope....I've just been on hold for so long that you've forgotten I was here. 2. Transferred to a doctor's voice mail to leave a message for a callback. I called later that evening to find out that that doctor was busy all day in surgeries. God forbid my dog's need was actual emergent and needed a callback say....within 10 hours. 3. Came in for a respiratory issue with my dog. First thing the doctor even mentions is..... spay and neuter. Right.... How about you take care of the issue first and then try to sell me on your "extras." Practice Manager was very snarky with me. Gave plenty of attitude. Will be transferring back to my old doctor once this issue is resolved. I moved from California with my 5 year old lab mix. When I first got him it took me about 3 years to find a vet that liked in Cali. I figured it would be difficult here too. I had been looking places to board him and for pet sitters as soon as I got here. My new and amazing pet sitter told me Westlake is the place to go. I was slightly skeptical because there are a few others places on Yelp with good reviews, but now I'm positive I made the right choice in Westlake. I took Pancho in for an initial consultation and the office was aesthetically pleasing -- nothing crazy but it just didn't have a hospital feel. That and Pancho's little nub was wagging a ton. The receptionist are all extremely friendly to both pets and people. Pancho's first part of his consult was with Signe who apparently is a renowned vet tech in the area and huge advocate in the community. She was far more knowledgable than the people I had in Cali. Pancho really liked her. The vet came in while her name escapes me at the moment - she was very genuine, unrushed, and fully attentive. Plus she loved Pancho. He got plenty of treats for them both as we all discussed his history and how the environmental changes here may affect him. It was a fantastic visit - and that is something I'm not sure I've ever said about a vet. I took him back for a teeth cleaning since he'd never had one before. He had to be put under anesthesia. I got frequent calls about his condition and requests for some additional minor procedures that would increase his health. Started to feel like he was a car in the shop when the mechanics continue to find things wrong. But, when I went to pick him up I met with Chris. She went over A to Z everything that happened, everything about how it affects him, and what I need to for him. It was very detailed. While I'm sure all the veterinarians are great at Westlake, my husband and I remain partial to Dr. Barbara Wensel. She has exceptional bedside manner and she always takes her time. When we first met her we were first time cat owners and she didn't brush off our anxieties. She took her time and answered all of our questions and concerns. Dr. Wensel stays current with the latest research in her field therefore any advice/suggestions she has are backed by current evidence based research, which is reassuring. We have two British Shorthairs, one of which has a heart condition, so it is extremely important to us to have a vet who is not just warm and caring but who is also knowledgable. Dr. Wensel is extremely kind and she really cares about her patients. For example, during one visit I mentioned I was receiving an award in my field and a week or two later I got a very sweet note in the mail from her and the rest of the staff congratulating me. It's small gestures of kindness like that coupled with her competence that keep us loyal to WLAH. We don't yet have children so our two cats are our babies. We want them in the best hands possible and thus we are grateful for Dr. Wensel's care. read more

Amazing. Compassionate. Professional. Kind My Daisy bit me by accident, her first bite in a lifetime with me, because I scared her and she reacted poorly. I had to go to the ER because it infected and that's where I learned that in Austin, TX if your pet bites you the pet must be professionally quarantined immediately for ten days. I was terrified for my Daisy and because I wasn't local I had no designated veterinary provider. But I'd heard great things about Westlake from neighbors so I called them and they took her in immediately even though she wasn't officially a client. She was with them for 10 days and they gave her great care then returned her to me. All along they stayed in communication with me and kept me up on her care. I paid $85 to have my dog groomed. I contested the charge with my credit card company and the Operations Manager for WLAH kindly refunded the $85, but the damage to my dog was done. The boarding staff was in their usual grumpy anti-customer mood, so no surprise there. The new groomer totally trashed my dog's appearance. Worse, the groomer caused abrasions on my dog's inner hip area. My husband and I just moved here from California and we were in need of a finding a new vet. This place had amazing reviews and just a few miles from our home so we decided to give this place a try! It's always hard trying to find the right place for your precious animals, especially for our two cats! Our oldest cat recently had dental work done before we moved to Austin and about a month ago I found one of her canine teeth on the floor. That's when I began my search for a new vet! I was worried about her and called Westlake Animal Hospital after reading their reviews. Luckily, they were able to get us in later that day. They even called our old vet to get the previous records for our cats. The lady at the counter was super nice and we chatted for awhile about our pets (I always love to brag about mine). The next day, I got a phone call, from the vet himself, checking in to make sure everything was okay. I thought that was really special! When i first moved to Austin, I started coming here based on recommendations of a few fellow dog lovers, but I quickly found another vet. This place is expensive and will squeeze every nickel and dime out of you. Since my dog is an adult and does not get regularly boarded, I do not always keep her parvo vaccinations up to date. They refused to approve her heartworm prescription based on that, which I have NEVER had a vet do before. The one thing that really earns them one star, though - the last time I took my dog there, during the exam, they found she had poo on her fur under her tail. She's a sheltie, she's got long fur, it happens. The vet asked me if I'd like her to grab the clippers and take care of it, I said sure, and she got a 2-second trim. I look on my bill - $8 charge for "hygiene grooming"!!!!! I was so pissed. I didn't notice it until a few days later or I'd have complained - it's not that I mind paying it but I feel like the vet was deliberately misleading about the charge, and seriously, $8 for 2 seconds of effort? I would have wanted something more thorough if I was going to pay for it. read more

Love them and would never go anywhere else! This is the third kitty I've gone to them for and they have been kind, professional, patient, diligent, thorough and wise. Really appreciated the care Dr. Brent Rains and Nicole showed towards our dog when we came with a damaged dewclaw. Dr Rains reviewed the notes from our regular vet before we arrived and was familiar with our dog's history. Our dog was anxious because of a bad nail clipping experience elsewhere, so they made an extra effort to help her relax with lots of treats, love and patience. I came across Westlake Animal Hospital when my dog needed cancer surgery that my previous vet could not do. I called several places for quotes and to discuss surgery options and decided to go here. I ended up doing a teeth cleaning at the same time because we would already be doing anesthesia. They also called me during the teeth cleaning to get permission to pull a tooth. The surgeon (Dr. Voelzel) called me that evening to check on my dog. This place is top notch. read more

With a toddler, it's really difficult to take my dogs to the vet nowadays- and for a mere $40, Westlake will come to my house to pick up all four of my dogs at once! What a deal! When we moved to Austin. They took good care of our first dog. After she passed (not their fault), we didn't think twice about taking our new dog here. 3 years later, the care was just ok the second time around. Our pup had a few issues and they could never figure out what the cause (intestinal and joint). Then one day my dog's face swelled up after a walk and she was panicking. I called them at 11am on a weekday to see if they could see her. I was told this wasn't an emergency clinic and they were too busy to squeeze her in. Best they had was 3 days from then. Disappointed, I called another vet down the road, they told me it was likely just a be sting and to give her Benadryl. If it didn't clear up in 30 min after Benadryl bring her in and they would squeeze me in between appointments. That's all my pup needed but unfortunately these guys were too busy to help. read more
