Found this place via other Yelp reviews as I was looking for a new poke spot to try out. I'm giving this place a 3 star because the dishes I ordered were okay. I liked that it was grab and go style and they have seating if you decide you want to eat in. I got the fish ceviche and the spicy salmon poke as well as California roll. My kiddo liked her California roll, I didn't get to try any. The spicy salmon poke was good and decent price for amount you get. I did add some soy sauce and wasabi with the spicy salmon poke and that made it so much better. I do wish the fish was a bit fresher in taste as I had some chunks that didn't go down well. When I opened the lid of the burger container, I thought I was getting this huge sandwich but it turns out, only the bun was huge. They have a small parking lot and it was pretty busy when we came at noon. They have ready made food such as poke, seaweed salad, octopus salad, and also made to order hot items like calamari, fried fish, etc. We ordered the spicy salmon poke combo with rice and seaweed salad, a spicy salmon poke, shoyu tuna poke, seaweed salad, and a fried calamari. The food takes longer to come out if you are ordering something hot. If you are just ordering poke, seaweed salad etc your order will be ready pretty much right away. Total was $58. The poke was really fresh and tasty. I also enjoyed the calamari it was fresh and crispy. The poke itself is a pretty small portion, maybe 1/3 of a lb per container. Checked out the new seafood spot in Castro valley today. The workers were friendly and greeted me as soon as I walked in the door to assist me. I had ordered ahead online and was a few minutes early. Basa has a parking lot right outside that has a few spots but I can see it posing a problem during peak hours. There was a few tables inside but I would assume most people take their meals to go because the place itself is relatively small. I ordered the spicy salmon poke, side of rice and a dynamite roll to go. My total about $23 which I thought was pretty reasonable. My personal preference for poke is a lot of toppings so I would say this didn't exactly hit the spot for me but it did taste fresh and tasted good. The dynamite roll was good and crispy, id probably get it again. The rice was fluffy and warm. This place is more of a grab and go place, or order over the phone for pickup. Limited seating, vibe is utilitarian. Got the spicy salmon, and while the flavor is really good and spicy- I really disliked how the fish is cut. The pieces are cut sooo small it feels like minced salmon, you don't really get the texture of the fish. Even though the flavors are there, the way the fish is cut reads to me as cutting corners. The portion is also kind of small. They had several things on their menu but it made me not confident to try anything else that I couldn't visibly see because I wasn't sure of how it would be cut/ prepared. Finally a fresh poke spot close to me! Came here for dinner around 5pm and it was empty. The interior is very clean and the service quick. As I was there waiting for my food lots of other people came in and it got packed for dinner service. Wanted to try a variety of things so I ordered the rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, shoyu tuna poke and the chicken teriyaki bowl. Everything was delicious! The sushi rolls and the poke were very fresh. The rainbow roll only came with two types of fish on top, but overall the roll was great. The chicken teriyaki bowl was a bit of a disappointment. Basa, commonly known as a species of fish, is a great name for this little shop out here in Castro Valley as it serves delicious sashimi/poke grade fish as well as cooked/fried fish for their prepared meals. Sharing a parking lot with a building that looks to be under renovations, Basa commands the whole lot (for now) and sits comfortably in view of the busy street and intersection. Despite the small shop, they do have a steady flow of customers from locals as well as visitors from afar familiar with the shop with the same name located across the bay in San Francisco. As you enter the storefront, you'll be greeted by the staff and display cases of their canned and bottled beverages and ready-made seaweed salad, sauces, and poke cuts and sashimi grade salmon and tuna. You'll also see up ahead the full menu for items that require a bit more preparation in the kitchen like sandwiches, fried goodies, and soup (clam chowder). After placing your order, if you have any prepared food, take a seat and wait with your little electric beeper/buzzer that they'll hand you (when your order is ready, you'll hear the beep and feel the buzz). Otherwise, if you're only grabbing their raw fish, you may already be on your way to enjoying your food. Either way, the wait shouldn't be more than 10 minutes or so (longer for those fish and chips). They have quite a few tables for indoor dining and it's quite casual/comfortable. There's no table service so be sure to clean up after yourself. They also have a gender neutral bathroom for use while you're there. We ordered a large cup of their chowder which was not as salty as others we have had; it tasted healthier, chunkier with the large pieces of potato, and more complex due to the plentiful bits of clam. The poke boxes were pretty good portioned for one (maybe even two if you have other food to supplement); we made our own rice to pair with the fish. Each box comes with their house marinated soy sauce and it's super tasty! Their fish and chips were also freshly fried and are more Cajun style (think crispy, tender catfish) as opposed to more New England style. The fries (chips) that go with the fish were seasoned well and super crispy. The staff were friendly and efficient. If you speak Cantonese, you may be able to converse with the store owners and practice the language! Overall, Basa Seafood Express is your quick stop for fresh poke or sashimi grade tuna and salmon while you're in the area. It serves all sorts of seafood: sushi, burgers, fried seafood, poke, etc. I heard that their main location is at SF, but they recently opened their other location in Castro Valley. Normally when you go out to eat poke, you choose your base, protein, sauces, and other toppings. This one is different because poke is served in a tray with a side of rice and seaweed. I heard that they're out of spicy salmon poke, but there's some in the display glass. However, I think we're told that they need to chill them first before serving them. Prices are fairly cheap. We called in our order and when picked up, we were told we cannot call in anymore- I thought that's the best way to avoid the crowd but I guessed they cannot handle the added services.... Tried Basa for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised! The price for everything is not bad at all, at 12:15pm on a Monday there was still parking, and the gentleman working the front counter was super helpful in answering all our questions. We got the poke special (one salmon one tuna) which came with poke, seaweed salad, rice, and water bottles. If you decide to eat inside there's a few tables but not great for groups, I'd definitely say taking it to go is the move. Which we did! Now when we got home to eat it and first opened it up, I will say the salmon did smell a TINY bit fishy. But it tasted perfectly fine, plain and with the spicy shoyu sauce that came with. Overall I think with the price and location we will definitely be back again in the future! It's so nice to have options nearby for fresh poke, sashimi, and other seafood options. read more

I can see this place getting ridiculous busy with long wait times. Fortunately, on my visit, around 2:30 in the afternoon, it wasn't too crowded. A couple of people sitting at tables. Another couple who walked in just before me but stepped back to negotiate the menu. I wanted to sample a variety of dishes, so I ordered four items to go. Cole Slaw - 4 - Not super sweet like some places. Theirs had a spice that I liked but couldn't figure out. Spicy Salmon Poke - 4 - The Salmon tasted fresh, but the spicy was SPICY! The pieces of fish are com in a small dice. Very palatable but sweat inducing for sure. The Tobiko on top added a nice crunchy texture. Unfortunately, the other two Poke dishes on offer are both Shoyu based, and I've developed a taste for the Wasabi Ahi Poke sold a major big box store. The portion was appetizer sized. Deep Fried Seafood Combo - 4 - Three smaller pieces of fish; six pieces of shrimp; three oysters and some crinkle cut chips. This also came with two lemon wedges and two small cups of tartare sauce. Everything on this combo is okay. I prefer Haddock or Cod. Nice thick pieces of fish that you recognize as being fish fillets. I didn't ask what kind of fish was being served but it was very flat and somewhat overwhelmed by the batter. The shrimp were good because you could eat the whole thing, the tail had been removed. The oysters were great. I usually don't eat the fries and when I remember, I ask to sub them with anything else. This time, I forgot. Clam Chowder - ? - Sorry, we're all out. (sigh!) I guess this will have to wait for another time. Overall, not the best. Certainly not the worse. Wait time seemed longer that I had expected. Kudos to them for having restaurant pagers that vibrate and make noise, so everyone doesn't have to stand at the counter waiting. As they figure out their systems, hopefully they'll more dishes to the menu and perhaps different sizes to the poke. The staff was nice. I'd be game to give them another go. read more
