This place is great for chill ass sushi at a great price. Easy, quick options and combos. The fish is nice and fresh, and it's just the right size portion wise for me.

Soft Shell Crab Burger - 4 stars

** 3.5 - 4 stars ** Review is for the clam chowder and soft-shelled crab burger only. Basa Seafood Express is a no frills spot that took over Dell's Cafe on Castro Valley Blvd. Offering poke, sashimi, rolls, some fried items and clam chowder. Order at the counter and a buzzer given to alert you when ready. I happened to order online and the estimate was about 30 mins but got there in 15 mins and waited. Be sure check in at the counter as your order may be ready sooner than estimated. :: SOFT-SHELLED CRAB BURGER - coated in panko and fried. Light (not greasy) crunchy crab with simple mayo, slices of red onion, tomato and spring mix on a sesame bun! 4/5 stars - I made a garlic/lemon aioli to add to my sandwich and yum! :: CLAM CHOWDER - thicker than ones I've had, tad sweet and can taste the cream. Clams present with chunks of potatoes. This was decent 3.25/5 Service pleasant and no nonsense. I'd return for the soft-shelled crab burger and clam chowder and make small mods at home. 4 tables for dine-in but most orders were for take out. Private lot parking.

First time here. There is a private parking lot Customer service is friendly, restaurant is clean and there are a few tables inside to sit down and enjoy your meal I ordered fried oysters with fries and a shrimp burger. Food is made as ordered Fried oysters are really good. Crispy on the outside with a good flavor Shrimp burger consist of fried small shrimp on the inside with mayo sauce and lettuce Prices are reasonable They do have an extensive menu and also offer catering No beer or wine served I would totally come back and try the Salmon burger consist

Spicy Salmon Poke 105. California Roll Fish Ceviche

Found this place via other Yelp reviews as I was looking for a new poke spot to try out. I'm giving this place a 3 star because the dishes I ordered were okay. I liked that it was grab and go style and they have seating if you decide you want to eat in. I got the fish ceviche and the spicy salmon poke as well as California roll. My kiddo liked her California roll, I didn't get to try any. The spicy salmon poke was good and decent price for amount you get. I did add some soy sauce and wasabi with the spicy salmon poke and that made it so much better. I didn't enjoy the fish ceviche though I wasn't sure what type of fish it was but it had a very fishy taste to it. I wish it was more citrus flavor to it. The customer service was awesome though! I would go back to try their burgers and other dishes for sure.

I can't get enough of this place! I've been to many sushi restaurants and this place delivers a high level of quality for a "grocery" style sushi. The fish to rice ratio is perfect. Parking is plenty, lots of seafood to choose from, and the catering looks delish Service is neat and there's good enough seating to enjoy a lunch here.

Clam Chowder + 2. Salmon Teriyaki and Shrimp Special Combo
    Darin T.

Pretty solid seafood spot with sushi rolls, fried seafood, poke and a little bit for everyone. I got the fried shrimp and teriyaki salmon special which was pretty good. The salmon was a little overcooked and dry but overall was tasty and I'd get it again. The clam chowder needed more clams but the flavor was there. Overall, pretty good value and a welcome addition to the East Bay.

Spicy Salmon Poke ($8), California Roll ($4.50)

I've been to the original location in SF, so it's cool to see Basa in CV! Same concept, no frills, grab and go. While convenient, it's not a place I'd go out of my way for. The highlight here is their poke, which in my opinion is only "cheap" because the trays are very shallow. Think of it being the equivalent of maybe 1.5-2 scoops of poke at a normal shop. I do wish the fish was a bit fresher in taste as I had some chunks that didn't go down well. I would recommend getting the poke only as part of a combo or with an accompanying roll to actually be a meal. RECS: + California roll ($4.50) was surprisingly really good! Rice was cooked well and imitation crab was perfect. Easily my favorite over the poke + Spicy salmon ($8) had good flavor, better than I remembered. The sriracha definitely comes through as does other savory, umami flavors

    Shoyu Salmon Poke
    Christine L.

Their fish is super fresh and if I were to come back, it would solely be for their poke! I ordered shoyu salmon with a side of rice. The poke was great, but the rice wasn't sushi rice. I think it was jasmine rice and it was on the drier side. I think this would be a good place to grab your proteins, but just get it to go and make your own rice and toppings at home. And also as a side note, the pieces of fish were cut in a measly way (as in they weren't really cubes and kind of scrappy, so presentation and mouthfeel wise it wasn't great).

I'm a big fan of their SF location and had a chance to come by in October for a friend's weekend wedding nearby. Conveniently located on a main road, Castro Valley Blvd, we easily found parking at their lot. Upon entering, the shop is bright, vibrant and clean. Their order counter is right at the entrance to order first, and they have a few tables inside. Good for small groups. Their Poke Special Combo comes with your choice of shoyu/spicy tuna or salmon, rice, seaweed salad and water. I ordered the spicy salmon and thought it was great! Fresh, well seasoned and really hit the spot. Highly recommend a visit.

Soft shelled crab & spicy salmon poke

I was in the neighborhood so I thought I'll drop by to order lunch. I ordered a soft shelled crab burger and the spicy salmon poke. When I opened the lid of the burger container, I thought I was getting this huge sandwich but it turns out, only the bun was huge. The crab barely had any meat and the were a few slivers of onions and a thin piece of lettuce. I tasted more bread than anything else. The only thing I enjoyed from eating the burger was the sauce. It was tangy which cut off the greasiness from the fried soft shelled crab. As for the spicy salmon poke, I thought the portions were pretty skimpy but the salmon was fresh.

There's a parking lot, which makes visiting easy, and the staff were friendly. Came here during their soft opening in May for the BOGO salmon poke promotion. The line was out the door, so it took a while to order, but it was definitely worth the wait. We got one of each: spicy salmon and shoyu salmon poke. I thought I would like the shoyu more, but the spicy salmon ended up being better! We wanted to buy a block of tuna, but unfortunately it wasn't available for purchase at the time. We also ordered from the hot food menu and got the fish and chips. It was okay, but the portion size was solid for the price. Overall, a great experience during their soft opening, and we'd gladly come back!

Fish & chips $12.99 Spicy salmon poke $8 Shoyu tina poke $11 Great service! Plenty of parking and seating inside. Fresh fish! Plenty of options to poke, burgers, plates, clam chowder and many more options. I love the batter on the fish and their tartar sauce was so good! Not that nasty onion vinergery smell and taste. However the fish is super thin and small portions. It is on the pricey side but its a great value.

Spicy salmon poke combo + dynamite roll

Our current favorite "fast food" more like fast pick up but the food is FRESH & delicious. If you like traditional poke, I want to say this place definitely matches that vibe. If you want A LOT toppings this might not be for you so don't go complaining that they don't offer a lot of toppings, they just don't do that here okay. Respect that. Their prices are fair, especially in this area & in this economy for this type of cuisine. This is our 7+ time (I lost count tbh) coming here at this point so figured I'd give a review!! My spicy salmon poke combo comes with the spicy salmon poke, a serving of seaweed salad, & good portion of rice. We also ordered a dynamite roll, the tempura was delicious, the tuna was soooo filling, and went perfect with the poke, my husband and I shared the roll so it was big enough to share for two people! We personally love coming here because it helps us meet our protein goals and the food is delicious, the staff is always polite and helpful, very nice people. The cozy shop displays their ready to go poke which is nice to look at when you walk in. The spicy salmon poke is something I crave often so we probably been coming here almost every other week or so because we LOVE it. I don't feel bloated after eating here, only energized, full & satisfied but not sluggish or anything like that. So even tho the portions are great, we don't feel like we over ate WHICH has definitely helped us eat better overall. The portions are generous and healthy, we don't feel guilty about coming here and getting our munch on cuz it's honestly one of our favorite meals & places to order from right now! I'm actually on my way here to pick up another order cuz we're in the mood for it again! Appreciate this local poke spot in the Bay Area, and hope to continue coming.

The catfish and fries were the only things worth eating -- crispy and actually good. Everything else? Low tier. The calamari was unevenly fried, the prawns were forgettable, and the oysters were the worst part. Instead of whole deep‑fried oysters, they gave us several oysters that had been chopped into halves and even quarters, turning into little oyster nuggets -- and those nuggets were fried way too hard, so you don't even get the real oyster experience. I've never seen anyone cut oysters like that. Overall, the food gets a C from me. I'm curious about their crab boil, but not curious enough to waste my money and risk another letdown. If you want good deep‑fried seafood, skip this place and find somewhere that actually knows what they're doing. Cashier was pleasant ambiance was nice.

Looking through old photos recently brought back memories, and I realized I never got around to sharing our experience. We had a wonderful time--the food was delicious, the service was great, and overall it was a very enjoyable dining experience. While I never made it back, my husband has visited a few times with friends and always had good things to say. The main reason we haven't returned as a family is because both of our boys (now adults) are allergic to seafood, and I usually prefer having them with us when we dine out. But after seeing these photos again, I think it's finally time for another visit and see if it's just as good as I remember!

When I arrived, I politely asked for a table in an area that was clearly available. The restaurant was basically empty at the time, but Mirella gave me what appeared to be one of the worst tables in the restaurant. When I asked about getting a different table, her attitude toward me was rude and unwelcoming. I understand that restaurants have seating policies and that sometimes certain tables may be reserved, but I believe customers should still be treated with courtesy and respect. In this situation, I felt that I was treated unnecessarily poorly, especially considering that there were plenty of other tables available. I am not writing this complaint to cause trouble for anyone. I simply believe management should be aware of how customers are being treated. I hope you can look into this situation and make sure that guests are welcomed and treated respectfully regardless of which table they request. Thank you for taking the time to hear my concern. I love the New Orleans food scene and therefore had a pretty high bar for Cajun food outside of Louisiana. I came in a little hesitant because I've been disappointed too many times by the options we have in the bay for Cajun food. But after I opened the box and took my first bite of that blackened shrimp Po Boy I could've sworn I thought I was sitting in the French Quarter again. The nice young lady that took my order recommended the blackened shrimp as an underrated choice on the po boys so I had to try it out. I came stuffed with a Red wine coleslaw, tomatoes, pickle slices and a drizzle of their special sauce (that I can only describe as spicy cajun mayo). 12/10 and I'm not exaggerating I also had a side (and when I say side take it with a grain of salt cause this feeds like 3 people for being a side) of the fresh Crab fries. Not overdone with the ingredients yet what a powerful hit of flavor, the Cajun seasoning usually comes out a bit salty on fries but these guys figured out how to balance it with the fresh shredded crab on top, garnished off with some green onion and more special sauce, this thing made me look around the room to see if anyone else was reacting like this over the food. (And they were! People were sitting there talking about "last time I tried ___ and ___ and it was fire") In the end I saw a guy that looked very proud to be there and was helping around the place while running back to his computer, that was Brett, the owner. I had to go and shake the man's hand and pick his mind a bit. He's a born and raised in New Orleans guy and you could tell by his kindness and southern hospitality. (Dude gave me a delicious carrot cake to go) Unfortunately in the end I had to walk back out into the reminder that I was in Castro valley and not New Orleans but for minute I was able to remember everything that had previously experienced from my trips there and that's what a great meal should do for you. His city should be proud of what he created here. I will absolutely be back to work my way through the full menu and add more pics to this review.
