We had our ??th class reunion at Hurst Ranch last night, and Bashful Butler provided a great spread! Because they're the preferred caterer for the Ranch, they know their way around so we were confident there would be no problems. The food was excellent! Served buffet style, there was great variety and everything was fresh, seasoned to perfection, and the hot foods were hot and the cold foods were cold. (I'm a little persnickety about such things.) My husband and I first booked this place in 2010 (we like to plan early to get the best deal) and worked with Nancy. Since we decided to have our wedding ceremony and reception at Hurst Ranch, we automatically had to turn to Bashful Butler for all of our catering needs (as they are the sole caterer for Hurst Ranch). Nancy was very friendly and played that caring mother role quite well and made us feel welcomed when we first met her. For our food tasting, it was like the back door food tasting, where we had to go to one of their catered events and pick up our food. Now this is not your typical fancy food tasting where you go to the caterer and they bring out a few dishes for you to sample, but actually better. Why you ask? Well when you pick up your sample plate from an actual event the caterer works, then you would know how the food would actually taste like during your own event. Often times people find that the food at their event does not taste nearly as good as when they had it the first time at their food tasting (thus this tasting style being better). Anyways, we did not like the food we tried and requested to try something else, so Ryan (the person we ended up working with since Nancy was on the path of retirement) set us up with another food tasting. We ended up picking chicken Marsala, tri tip, garlic mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, garden salad and ambrosia salad for our lunch buffet. And on the day of our wedding (we both did not eat much because of our nerves) the food tasted delicious. We also loved the design the cake decorator did for us (I sent Ryan a nice design that I saw on line and wasn't sure if the decorator could recreate it, but he said that he could, so it was a wonderful surprise that our cake looked almost like the photo I sent him). Bashful Butler was pretty flexible, in which I had to add 4 more guests to the guest count 10 days before the wedding (after I had already met with Ryan to finalize everything) and he had no problem adding them. On the day of the wedding, we had a few hiccups, but luckily our banquet manager, Chris, was there to fix those problems quickly. She was so sweet and incredibly accommodating. Especially when my husband and I had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony prior to the wedding ceremony and Chris was able to bring out 30+ cups for us to serve the tea to our families. Chris also made sure that we had hot water and tea bags ready to go when we arrived to the venue 2 hours before our scheduled wedding ceremony time (if I could, I would give Chris 5 stars alone). The pricing Bashful Butler charged was very affordable and Ryan and Nancy worked with our budget. But I do have just a few complaints while working with them. One thing was that we were told that our food would be boxed up (guests are not allowed to have their food boxed up due to health code violation, according to the caterer) and that we could pick it up after the wedding was over. However, the 2nd banquet manager (Chris left an hour before our event was over, which we were told ahead of time and was assigned 2 banquet managers) said he did not see a to go box for us :( (and we were pretty hungry after the wedding too... make sure you eat a good meal before you attend your own wedding and after too). Another thing was that the restroom in the little yellow house (the bride can use the yellow house to get dressed) was not working (fortunately, I had a friend who was able to fix it and save the day for me). Another thing was that in the men's restroom (in reception hall), one of the stalls did not have toilet paper. Lastly, after we had thought we wrote our last check for the wedding, we were contacted by Ryan more than once to pay a 2nd and 3rd final check due to miscalculation. But overall, I still had no big problems working with Bashful Butler and wouldn't mind working with them again. read more

Teresa made herself available to me via phone,text and email day or night whenever I had a question she was always available to provide answers for me in a timely manner. Absolutely horrible experience. Kept my deposit even after I explained my medical necessity to cancel complete with a Dr. note. It was literally a week after I gave it to them that I was forced to postpone my date. Church I was working with used them. They did no work for me, the date was only reserved for a week a year in advance. Heartless and I will always be upset for the money I lost to them years ago. Had a 50th High School Reunion last night at the Covina Womens Club. I film wedding full time ...have had lots of experience seeing it done right....last night I didn't. 270 people with one bartender....wait was at least 30 mins....the line interfered with people arriving....was a total mess. Drinks were very expensive. The A/C was pitiful...was extremely hot. The buffet food was average at best. That staff were rude & unsmiling...they were as miserable as us I guess. Bashful Butler Catering is the company we had to contract with due to choosing our wedding to be at the Hurst Ranch. The day of, the staff were great and attending to the buffet table, bar, security guards, staff setting up and cleaning at the end. The coordinators maybe due to COVID or high volume were a bit disorganized. At times it was hard to get in touch and responses were not as immediate as imagined. Again, the reply from the "vendor" clearly indicates, their lack of detail. The very second line, stated that I am not the direct client. It was my brother's wedding. Nancy does not remember that I had been to her facility a number of times in place of my brother and the bride for food sampling, cake sampling. Btw, i tried their food, and was not at all impressed. In fact, a few relatives commented on how wonderful the venue, dj, church, flowers, photo booth were, but stated they were very displeased by the food! Good thing they got drunk to wash down the taste of the meal. Oh and if you like your beef chewy, they are perfect at that! Also, alot of venues state it is up to the "user" to clean up. The user does not necessarily mean the bride and groom pick crap off the floor. Again, I never once mentioned the kitchen use. I was talking abt the ballroom floor. (again the lack of attention on their part). The "user" finds alternate ppl to do clean up, ie, the caterer. Worst customer service imaginable. Keep in mind my event was schedule prior to COVID-19, but I didn't even receive an email regarding what would come of my event because of the restrictions. Used this company for venue and catering for my wedding. Food was good and price was decent. Food was served about an hour late. Prepaid for alcohol and no record was kept. They tried to tell me 400 beers and my open bar tab was sold through an hour into reception. After confronting the people running the bar and demanded they show the empties which could not be produced we suddenly had bar open for 3 more hours... Security they provided was rude to guests and unprofessional. Paid for extra time at the venue and they tried to shut us down 45 min early. Manager argued with disrespect to my wife and I. Wrote a letter to Nancy and I never received a reply. The negative rating has more to do with the horrible experience and lack of response. Attended a wedding at hurst with bashful butlers handling the event in terms of setting up dining area and ceremony area. Everything seemed fine until the dining part. We had buffet style bbq. Things that went wrong: 1) they ran out of plates for the guests and was sluggish about bringing more out 2) ran out of mugs (tea, coffee, hot coco) and was sluggish to bring more out 3) tried to clean up earlier than the agreed time (7:40pm) they started cleaning at 7pm even though the mc said to go ahead and get seconds. Despite the mc saying this, they continued to put things away. 4) the female security guard was annoying as hell. Doing bag checks at a wedding, patrolling the dining area and restrooms throughout the event, we were not allowed to bring any outside beverages as well. Normally you don't see a security guard patrolling whilst people are dining and announcements being made. Rude. 5) regarding the food, despite being buffet style, they ran out of beef and not everyone got some. Very disorganized. Some people got 2-3 slices. I got 3 slices even though i didn't even ask for 3. I shared the beef i got with people at my table who didn't get any. It felt like the server wanted to end it quick. He was fast with The knife and handing out slices of beef, but did not proportion it properly. Although it did rain, i am unsure whether they were able to smoke more before it started raining. But there was enough for everyone to get some beef if they handed out 1 slice each first. Good part was that it was cooked well. 6) mac and cheese and mash potatoes lacked salt I would not recommend this if you want to have a large rowdy wedding. I can see they would work better with a smaller crowd though, we had a particularly large group. Only reason this got 2 stars is the price and food was decent if Only they didn't run out. My wife and I planned and managed our entire wedding, and I am very meticulous (some may call it OCD) about every moment of our day. I had a spreadsheet that each minute from that morning until the final guest had left were accounted for. Ryan and his staff stuck to 'the schedule', always staying on task and when we were going over the allotted time, they gently moved us on to the next event tastefully and without issue. We not only had our reception at the Azusa Woman's Club, but we were married there as well. They set up the hall to accommodate a wedding and a reception all in one, and they have a beautiful courtyard that is just outside the hall if you want to have any part of your wedding or reception outside. The wedding was perfect, the transition to the reception was seamless, and the food was delicious! We were able to taste test the food variations they offer, all were very good, and we did not have one complaint, only compliments! We had our wedding last Friday 12/22/17 in Azusa Woman's Club. I have to say we were very disappointed. I also must say that I wrote an email and they haven't bothered to reply. When I got to the venue at 4pm(which was two hours prior to my event and by the way it's an inconvenience to only give two hours prior) not everything was set up. I had my ceremony there and there was no chairs set up and the gazebo was not where we asked. Cathy, our coordinator for that day which was so great with us and tried to work with all the inconveniences we had, tried to move things around but the gazebo fell apart. When we spoke to Donna she assured us that everything was going to be set up by 4pm. It wasn't. Another thing was our cake. We specifically asked for whipped cream and we didn't get that. Our cake tasted so much different from when we did the cake tasting. Also my cake topper was broken. When I gave it to Donna it was not like that, Cathy put it together for us again. The seat covers we were told by Donna were included, we never got them. Our seats didn't have any seat covers. The bar tender we had was very rude. I don't recall his name. We were told by Donna that we could just put money down for the bar that day. He kept saying it was a no host bar and would not let us open a tab until Cathy made a phone call. Very rude man and made us look horrible in front of our guest. We feel there is a lack of communication between Donna, the employees and the clients (us). I paid everything in full more than a month prior to our event. I don't think it's fair for me to do that and not get everything we were told. The only good thing i have to say is that the food was actually good and Cathy was great! She was such a great help and very pleasant. Besides all the inconveniences she somehow made things work. I have nothing but good things to say about Bashful Butler Catering. We booked our wedding with Ryan and chose The Hurst Ranch for our venue. We found this company from a friend who recommended them. Our wedding was in June of this year. To start out Ryan made everything very easy when it came to planning and putting all the details together. The catering options are affordable and they have a lot of different options. We chose the BBQ package with tri-tip and chicken, corn on the cobb, mashed potatoes, salad. We also had biscuits and rolls. I have had so many of our friends and family members tell us after the wedding how it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. That was the biggest concern of ours and the food was amazing. The cake was beautiful exactly what I asked for and it was very good as well. Now about the staff they were great. Bashful Butler was the catering service designated to Hurst Ranch, where I was married on 05/26/2012. I was a bit hesitant at first because you pretty much hire them blind. There is no tasting until after you hire them. The tasting was not a sit down tasting either. They let you know what day they are preparing the same meal as you have selected or are considering and then you need to show up to their kitchen or hall. After we had our tasting we felt a great sense of relief because the food was good. The person I worked with to book our wedding was Nancy. I booked about 9 months before the wedding and we put together an outline of what we wanted. Two weeks before the wedding we met up again to discuss all the details. We finalized the menu and discussed the timeline to make sure they were ready for the toast and the cake cutting. The catering staff was very helpful on day of our wedding as we needed some last minutes tables set up outside for our ceremony. I was also able to drop off our burlap table squares a few days before so they could be set up on the tables. Nancy also threw in some colored linens she had for our cake table and any other place we might need them. The bartender & security staff were great as well. They checked in with us to make sure everything was going well during the dinner. The only problem we encountered was our missing chair covers. I asked the staff when the chair covers were going to be set up. This was about 2 hours before our reception started. I had paid for the chair covers 2 weeks prior. Note: the chair covers are not ordered through Bashful Butler but through a vendor they work with. It turns out that whomever was in charge of ordering the chair covers forgot to order them & she was now on vacation. At that point I didn't care much because there was nothing that could be done. I was just glad that the chairs being used were white and didn't really look out of place with the decor. It was also very comforting to be refunded the $ on the spot. I gave them my budget and they totally built an amazing reception around it. I swear they threw in all kinds of perks and helped me find a great dj as well. i could write a book about my experience but ill keep it short..... 1) customer services sucks...ryan hates his job. 2) MY CAKE WAS AWFUL!!!! I actually freaked out at how ugly it was. i gave them a picture of my cake and a different one. i told them which one do you think your bakery can make. Ryan kept saying as long as its not fondant your fine. my cake wasn't fondant, it was textured but with great care and skill it looked almost like it was folded over it self over and over again. they literally took a fork to it and scraped it. it also looked like was bumped around in the box. it was so ugly i didn't want to cut it or take pictures with it. I hated it. 3) i was told that someone would introduce herself/himself to me on the day of so that we could coordinate what was going to happened at what time. it wasn't until everything was said and done. the cake was cut and food was taken away, did i get a waitress come up to me and say we opened a bunch of champagne bottles for your toasts when are you going to do them. We had already toasted in the beginning before we had dinner. On my last meeting with Ryan i told him first thing first toasts we wanted to get them out of the way. I told her that and she then said, "well okay they are going to go bad should we just serve them?" i said yes but i don't think anyone had champagne. 4) party finished earlier then expected which was great. it was suppose to end at 8:30 but at that time we (my husband and i and a few guest) where putting a few things in our car when they turned off all the lights. It was rude and made everyone feel like we were being kicked out. 5) bartender .....so we gave Ryan money to have a limited open bar and we were ADAMANT only for beer and soda and only during dinner. we told Ryan about 3 times. last i checked Ryan was in charge of tell them what to do and what to expect. started giving out drinks way too early my Husband had to go tell him to stop. by the time dinner started there was no more money left. He never came up to us to see if we wanted to add more money to the bar. I had a great experience with this catering business! My wedding was on 12/7 at Hurst Ranch, and the person in charge, Ryan, went out of his way to give me the wedding experience that I really wanted. It was expected to rain so everything was set up in the hall, but I asked for an outdoor ceremony and was given exactly that! They were so flexible in providing the best service. The bar tap was set and we were given a warning about it being full, and were shown a great deal of respect by the caterers by them not going over our limit. Every employee was truly invested in making the wedding as stress free as possible, including a couple free servings of wine for my husband and I, as well as our parents! Donna was a great assist with prepping until the big day, being available through text and email, and Flexible about payments. What I appreciated the most was her honesty! read more
