I went into Mel's shop at Basic Btch Haircuts and, to be fair, she tried but she just can't do it. Prices were a little "treat yourself" level, but hey--my hair grows fast, I'm low-maintenance, and I wasn't looking for a masterpiece. Just a decent trim. What I got, however, was less "fresh fade" and more "lawn mower lost control." I'm usually the guy who shrugs and says, "Eh, it'll grow back." But this wasn't a "give it a week" situation. This was a full-blown hack job. The fade looked like it gave up halfway through and clocked out early. I've seen smoother transitions on a staircase. Unfortunately, this haircut didn't go good. At all. Basic Btch Haircuts didn't just miss the mark--they cut around it. The vibe of this place is super different and not for everybody. I made an appointment at Basic Bitch Haircuts on Jan 6th for Jan 8th, at Jimmy's garage in midtown. 1.5 hours before my appointment Mel messaged me to request we reschedule for personal reasons, I was happy to help her out and we rescheduled for the same time the next day. Apparently I was supposed to show up to her home/mobile salon in Natomas instead of Jimmys garage, though no address was given for the alternative location. When I texted her I was on the way she did not respond, and so I waited at the barbershop for around 20 minutes before giving up and texting her I was headed out. No attempt was made to schedule me another haircut at a time/place that was​ accessible to me, and I was deeply disappointed in the entire experience. Overall this was a disheartening adventure on my hair journey as I have changed my gender expression recently and put a lot of trust in Mel just setting this appointment. It all felt very unprofessional and lacked care I would hope for from someone who works with the LGBTQ community. read more

Mel is gifted. I have never really liked how anyone cut my hair, until Mel. When I went to her for the first time a couple years ago, I was expecting more of the same cuts that I wasn't quite happy with. I told her some of the issues I've had with my cuts in the past not being shaped right, or growing out weird, and it was like she already knew what I was going to say. She had the knowledge and confidence to tell me "no" to what I THOUGHT I wanted from my haircut, and I'm glad I trusted her, because she knew better. She told me all about my hair type and head shape and how that informs how my hair should be cut. She has this crazy knack to know exactly how to cut your hair within moments of looking at you, and she was completely right about mine, because I've never liked my haircuts more and haven't gotten my hair cut by anyone else since (except in "emergencies"). If I'm too lazy to get my haircut regularly (and I often am), my hair still looks good when it grows out, because she cuts it according to my head shape and hair type.
