I'm really grateful I found Megan! She's obviously very skilled at what she does and also knowledgeable in how to take care of textured hair well. I recently started my curly girl (wavy hair) journey and was in dire need of both a haircut and some guidance on what the heck I was doing. Megan listened to what I wanted (wash and wear + taking some bulk away) and gave me helpful advice when I wasn't sure. She did a dry cut and rehydrated to style, and didn't rush or cut corners. She also took the time to make sure I understood how to care for my hair going forward, and redemonstrated to me some of the things she did to my hair so that my hair "self-care" didn't just stop at the salon. I walked away understanding more about where my hair was at and what its needs were. I love that her priority is getting hair to its best health/to a good equilibrium. I also really appreciate her professionalism. I have some haircut anxiety (just sensory sensitive in general) and she was very respectful and never forced conversation. When we did talk she's a great conversationalist! Very chill, on top of that. I would say, it took a little bit of reaching out to connect with someone here as they don't have "front desk"/scheduling type staff. Don't let that discourage you from a good cut, though. My first experience at the Banyan Tree today was pretty great! I was a tad nervous about getting a wolf cut (or shag cut with a fringe) for the first time, AND with a new stylist. But Megan did a really great job at putting me at ease with her wealth of knowledge in cutting "naturally-textured" hair, her commitment to being thorough, and just her overall chill vibe and demeanor. Just so you know what to expect, she took the full 1.5-hour time slot to do a "dry cut". There was no washing or drying, and did minimal styling for that "natural" look. She asked me a lot of questions on how I usually style my hair -- even down to what products I use -- to get a feel for how to cut the layers, see if my routine needed any modifications, etc. Since I air-dry it with some product, she styled it similarly. I like that she took the time to pay meticulous attention to getting each layer right, and her focus was on making sure I can get the desired result when I style it at home. She also took the time to educate me on how to style my new fringe. It IS a tad pricey ($130 w/ tip), but I found that's the standard rate with other curly/wavy hair specialists I've inquired with in the Sacramento area. Also, I'd rather have someone take the time to make the layers even, so you have a better quality hair style in the long term, rather than being "glammed up" for a day. This also ensures that they DON'T end up cutting it too short, which is what often happens, and it's given me trust issues over the years lol. I will be back! read more

My daughter has curly/wavy long hair, so we booked with Salisa, as she claimed on the website to love working with curly hair. We asked for some face framing layers in the front, and to keep the length in the back, but to give it a trim since this was her first real pandemic cut. Salisa spent an hour and a half working on her hair. She appeared to be thinning the back while working it with a fine tooth comb (literally). We did not ask for thinning. In fact, we didn't ask for much in the back at all. I was unsure when I saw that, but figured that maybe after 20 years in the business, she had some old school technique that the stylists I've been to with my curly hair don't use anymore?? Typically, with my curly hair, the standard is they dry cut it while curly/natural, or they wet and then cut. In this case, it was dry, then brushed out with the comb undoing the curls, and she cut into the back in a scraping fashion with scissors. When it was done, she did not style it, and instead asked for my daughter to air dry it. After it was finally dry, I wanted to cry. The front, looked almost the same. Mind you, I let my kid cut her own bangs during quarantine, so that's not a compliment. The back is a disaster. The thinned out sections dried into scraggly strands. There is a bulky middle section with curls underneath that puff it up around her shoulders. It's still fairly flat with no layers on top. Her hair looks virtually the same from the front, but much worse in the back. She said that Salisa had told her that she would have layers in the front that she could see if she pulled her hair up in a ponytail or bun, and we kept trying to find them, but nothing. We were so enchanted with the pretty atmosphere of the salon, and we were hopeful that Salisa had heard us and knew what she was doing. We showed her pictures and discussed what we wanted before she started. Honestly, a long style haircut with some layers in front does not seem too hard. We had a very reasonable bar. If she had any concerns about delivering on that request with my daughter's curls, I expected her, as a professional, to say so. Instead, she left my daughter looking worse than when she walked in,. Such a disappointment. PS - the salon owner did offer a refund, so I'm adding a star for that gesture, although I did not accept it since I'm not interested in taking their money. I do wish I didn't have to invest the time to try to find someone new with enough skill to fix this. All I wanted was for my kid to feel cute after a rough year and a half of pandemic life. :( read more

Maytee did an awesome job on my hair! She stayed within my budget while executing a look that was both beautiful and natural looking. I love the placement of the highlights and how it blends well with the rest of my hair. I also had natural redness at the ends of my dark hair caused by sun exposure and dryness, but she flawlessly blended the new colors and my nasty ends don't look gross anymore! I was also worried about the look not being noticeable considering my natural hair is already dark, but the change was beautifully there and I'm excited to go out with my new look! I think i have been with Kristina for about a year now. and of course i am still here and staying with her ;) Kristina has got me through blonde, and then me stubbornly wanting to go back to dark, and then bleaching it myself because i could not wait, and then getting my color corrected and going to blonde again.. she kind of got me through all of this, and my hair has looked amazing everytime i walk out of the banyan tree. I sort of like to ask her for opinions and she always help me make great hair decisions. I actually switched my part from one of my visits to make my hair look fuller. love love love. Even though i can only speak for Kristina, the other stylists are great as well and all very nice. Also, their salon is just so cute and so relaxing when you are there. Not sure if my experience with my stylist was a reflection of the salon as a whole or not but I had not the greatest experience there. I went in over a year ago for a balayage look. I knew it would take time and multiple sessions to get the look I wanted and that was something I was willingly to do. When I was initially texting with my stylist the desired look, she told me balayage wasn't even a thing. I got confused and sent her inspo pics and she just said no to them. I went in anyway... she gave my three massive strips of highlight; one in the back, one behind my left ear and one straight down the front of my face. She charged my $200 for it. I, stupidly, made another appointment becuase I thought it was a part of the process. When I went back, she just rebleached and retoned the previously bleached sections and once again charged me $200. Not once did she cut my hair or add any new sections of highlight. I didn't want to review and rate in hopes that this was a stand-alone incident and not a reflection of the business at a whole but I truly hated that hair and the amount I spent on it. I spent $400 on something I could have easily butchered at home. My hair was super damaged and breaking off after going there and I finally decided to just cut it all off. read more

The salon takes extra precautions to make sure everyone is safe during this time while still consistently providing fantastic results. I have been coming to this salon since 2017, and it truly was life changing from the moment I first got my haircut and balayage(d) here. I started out with Kristina and was blown away. She revived my curl pattern and her coloring technique is beyond! Although she hasn't been available this year, I highly recommend booking her for hair services in the future. She knows her stuff and her level of talent and care inspires me. Kristina recommended I get my haircut and highlights and lowlights from Chelsea and a couple other coworkers during the time she is out of the office. I went with Chelsea and I'm so happy I did. I now have two beyond talented hair artists to turn to whenever my mane of curls needs to be zhuzed up. Chelsea is a godsend! In my time of need after my hair had grown out beyond my waist, I booked an appointment with her wanting an artist that can cut curl patters for my big chop. She exceeded my expectations and took the time to understand the color story and haircut I wanted. She literally took me outside so I could take off my mask to make sure my face shape was complimented by the cut and color. I gave her creative freedom and took her recommendations, and tbh probably got the best damn haircut for my face shape that I've ever had. Not only did it highlight my cheekbones and eyes, it's been growing out beautifully. Not only that, my highlights, lowlights, and money pieces were done in a way that allowed everything to grow out and fade beautifully. It doesn't look like I need a touch up yet, it all looks intentional and it's been about two months since my appointment. Could not love this place more than I do! Absolute gem of a spot. Came in for the first time to get a long put-off haircut today after doing some Yelp research for a salon... beyond glad I went with The Banyan Tree. First of all, street parking is a breeze and who doesn't love that? Secondly, it's such a great space just to walk into. Lots of plants, a sweet sitting area, and plenty of handmade pieces decorating the place; nothing uppity or cold about it. Also, they offer water in a glass not a plastic bottle and I appreciate that minimization of waste! Really makes your experience welcoming and cool from the get-go. My cut was with Megan and simply put: she's f'n awesome. Really took the time to talk to me about what I wanted (a lob kinda), how my hair behaves in general, and what I tend to do with it. She was super supportive of me doing a big chop (around 12 inches) but made sure to remind me to keep in mind that my hair will behave differently than some of the trendy lob images online. It was a breeze to chat with her during the cut as well; I appreciate organic convo! Literally talked about everything from food to star signs to cultural themes and then back to food again. Alongside the fab experience, I ended up with a haircut I absolutely love. I have NEVER had short hair in my adult life, I was honestly a little nervous but I'm super stoked about my short hair now. Samantha did my balayage and I'm so happy. I'm a pretty simple girl with the laziness of a jobless dude living on his moms couch when it comes to doing my hair. The world would be lucky if I comb my hair for the day. Not an an exaggeration Samantha gave me a low maintenance color and cut. The whole appointment was almost 3 hours because I have black hair. The time flew by because she was so pleasant. She has great conversations and gave me the most relaxing head shampoo. At one point I dosed off while she was styling my hair. Ambience: this place is tucked away on s street and it's too stinking cute. The decor is just my style. Intimate, boho, greenery and friendly. I love that everyone was there focused on their clients. I saw her for five years, from shorter hair to long. I need my hair to be wash-and-wear, and I just asked her to do what she thought was best and I came away with an adorable, light, wearable haircut that really showed off my hair's beauty every time. Unfortunately, I really wanted to love this place and my hairstylist, but yet again I was failed. I did my research and read all the great reviews on this and picked a stylist I thought would listen to what I wanted. I asked for a basic cut of long layers and face framing. My face framing was uneven as one side of my bangs was longer and thicker than the other. Same with the bottom right side of my hair, which had a strand way longer than the left side. I also specifically asked for a smooth blowout and left with a puffy mess as if I had just half dried my hair. I could tell my stylist was rushing the blowout because her next customer was waiting, but I just felt you shouldn't rush when your current client is paying you $100 total for a whole cut/blowdry/tip. I truly felt my $100 was down the drain and wanted to reach back to my stylist to fix the unevenness but wasn't sure if she would. I give it a 1 rating because of my personal experience with my stylist, not the studio as a whole! I'm sure other stylists there may be great. read more

Kristina is fantastic. So I have bad Asian hair and grew it out for a couple of months to see if I could style it or do something else other than to shave it short. Kristina's cutting technique and ability to give ideas was great. Ultimately we changed how I part my hair she blended it in a way that it doesn't have to be as short but has a clean and edgier look. First time at the Banyan Tree! My stylist Holly was amazing!!!! I chopped my long hair into a bob and was slightly nervous to be honest but could not be more thrilled with result. Service at the Banyan Tree was awesome from the start. When you open the door you step into an inviting space with warm wood tones and lush green living plants. There is gorgeous macrame hanging around the mirrors and monstera leaves decorating the wall of the wash station. Holly really took the time to talk about the type of cut and style I wanted.
