Pretty good food. Agonizingly sloooow service. Five tables were seated after us and got their checks and were gone before we even got our entree. We didn't even get anything fancy. Just spicy garlic tofu. It was a slow Wednesday night. Expect to be there much longer than normal, i.e. 10 minutes for a server to acknowledge your existence, 40 minutes for an entree and 20 to get the check. The time before, we were there an hour and a half but decided to give them another try because we'd been coming for years. Our mistake. Our server took so long to bring the check. He tried to get us to get dessert after we already declined and asked for the check. When we said no thank you, he just tossed it down and walked away. Jackass. We were late to an event thanks to that guy. There's no reason it should take an hour and ten minutes to have a salad and entree. read more

There was a small, dark, curly hair in my food. The waitress saw me discover the hair and was quick to replace my food. She offered me a free drink. I still had to pay for the food and first drink. I don't mind paying for food I have eaten, but the appalling circumstances left me extremely unhappy. At the very least, my plate of food should've been compensated out of principle. read more

I love it here. They have the best spring rolls ever by far in Canton Ohio. They have sushi that is very fresh and the presentation on that plate is beautiful. I love this place. Avocado curry is one of my favorite foods, and I used to drive 45 minutes up to Fairlawn to get it, but Basil's is amazing, and right down the street! The food was just okay. We started off with the basil special roll. It was good, but nothing over the top. Definitely better than the average sushi roll. My husband had kung pao shrimp and it was tasty, but not spicy at all. We have had better at PF Chang's, which is disappointing. I had the walnut shrimp, which was not what I expected. I was thinking it would be the traditional walnut shrimp in the creamy sauce, but this was like a sweet version of kung pao. The sauce was good, and the walnuts were toasted and delicious. The thing that really put me off was the fact that the peas and carrots in it were frozen! Like, out of a bag and into a pan, not what I expected from this type of restaurant. The one saving grace for the food was that the shrimp were cooked perfectly. It was hard to get to the food because we had a few flies bothering us, which is not usually a good sign when it comes to cleanliness. Overall, I would give the food a 3 out of 5. The service was what really ruined our experience here. Our server seemed to disappear and never return. We ordered second drinks when we were almost finished with dinner. Didn't receive them until well after we were finished. Then it took 15 mins after our drinks were gone before we got boxes and the server didn't even bring the check. We still left 20%, but someone should let the poor girl know that serving is not her forte. We will not return. When you pay for a babysitter, the restaurant must be worth the while. read more

I was in Canton on business last week staying at the McKinley Grand Hotel downtown. OMG, I love this place! I was simply blown away by the atmosphere, the service, and most importantly, the food! I loved the variety; sushi, Chinese, Thai, and Fusion that the menu offers. This is my new "go to" spot when I'm in town and it's within walking distance of both work and my hotel. Food was phenomenal. When we visited they were able to accommodate our large party with limited space. My favorite dish it the thia spaghetti but you can't go wrong with any of the sushi. The young man & his sister that run this restaurant are there most nights & visit the tables. They have amazing bubbling martinis. You really have to try this place. Worst night ever. We called and made reservations for 14 people last week for tonight at 8. I called the restaurant again today to make sure they had our reservations. The girl on the phone was SUPER rude but she told me she was going to sit us in the bar. That was fine! We arrived and we were told by two different RUDE people that they had our reservation down for Saturday night, not Friday. I explained to her that I had just called her 3 hours ago to check and she had them. She then looked at me and and asked me what she wanted her to do about it. I have never been treated so rude by a hostess and manager. We will NEVER be back. Thank god Canton has a lot more options to eat, that are actually better than this establishment. I suggest the owner of this establishment make some serious changes to his staff. As we were leaving the people behind me in line said they had never been treated so rude in a restaurant either. That party left as well and they had 10 people with them. So all in all they lost 24 customers in a 4 minute time period. read more

i went to basil with a couple who recommended the place to me. my friend came to me highly recommending the jam-bowl (jjampong). i was hankering for some good asian food so i gladly went with him. i can't speak to the whole menu because in my experience, places that serve the gamut of asian cuisine - pho, pad thai, bulgogi, sushi, jjampong, etc. don't do all of them well, so i'll share my experience with the jam-bowl and the bon bon chicken. the bon bon chicken i thought was going to be like bon chon chicken i've had in virginia. it was similar, but more like orange chicken than bon chon. the breading was more like bon chon, but the chicken was more like orange chicken. it was good, but not what i was expecting (this will be the theme for the meal). let me emphasize, it was good. the taste was great, the breading was great, it's just not going to be like bon chon chicken if that's what you're expecting from the name and description. the jam-bowl was also great. the flavor was great, the broth was very meaty/seafoody and spicy, it was packed with seafood. BUT... it was not what i was expecting. it's not going to be the jjampong you might expect from a chinese restaurant. all the elements are there, but it's not authentic. again, that's not bad. it's just different. some differences: the broth could have been spicier, they packed the soup with beef and huge scallops (good and bad), the noodles didn't seem to fit perfectly with the soup. i'm used to my jjampong being fire red with almost a film of spicy redness on the top of it to skim off. i wasn't a big fan of the beef in the soup. i think traditionally there is some strips of beef or pork but this was more like little chunks of ground beef. i think the scallops were a great touch and i could see why the price was higher than i was used to seeing. the noodles were not typical jjampong noodles to me. i'm used to seeing smooth handmade noodles in my jjampong. these may have been handmade, but there were a lot of kinks in the noodles that made me think they might not be handmade, but they were also a little rougher than normal. they kind of reminded me of lo mein noodles than jjampong noodles if that helps. this place is a little pricier for asian food you're used to seeing for cheaper, but it is an asian bistro so you can expect it to be a little more expensive, especially with the huge scallops in the jjampong. i don't mean either of those comments in any negative way, it's just most bistros are going to charge a little more for menu items. it's just the way things are. so overall, we had a great meal. it just wasn't what i was expecting. when you come, lose your expectations and enjoy your meal. i would recommend staying with something that bistros are more known for like pad thai or their more asian fusion dishes. it's definitely worth a visit. there aren't a lot of restaurants like this around here. read more

Very nice downtown canton Asian cuisine! Fun place to bring a few friends or go on a double date. Most of the classic dishes are very good but try the Vietnamese Pho'. It is HUGE and very reasonably priced. I usually get it with a side of kimchi. Go for the atmosphere too - nice place to just sit bar side and have a drink or two. I went there on a Thursday evening for dinner to celebrate my birthday with a buddy and my girlfriend. Had heard the Ly's had opened up a new place in downtown Canton recently, so I was excited to check it out finally. The ambiance was stately, bright, clean, and elegant. We were greeted with a warm reception. It was early, so we got to chat with several of the Ly family. The menu was excellent. With all of the authentic Chinese, Thai, and even a couple of Korean dishes. I was impressed. We started with a sashimi sampler. Every piece as fresh as could be and displayed beautifully. Being Korean, I had to try the Jjamppong. If you like spicy noodle soup, you gotta try it. It was loaded with tons of the freshest seafood, great noodles, with just the right temperature of spiciness. After sampling the other dishes my companions ordered, I realized everything tasted just as good as I had remembered from the old Ricky Ly's. Two thumbs up for the best Chinese around! Go here if you want a more upscale and posh Asian restaurant to sit in. The food itself was mediocre, similar to Chinese take out but with a heftier price, the sushi was also mediocre, I prefer sushi from another place in Canton. We're basically paying for the ambiance and not the food. Their fried rice was the best I've had around Canton though, it was fluffy and had the right amount of flavor, I did not like my Korean steak, it had a chewy/rubbery texture, like soft gummy bears and it was also too salty. Our Thai tea literally tasted like candy, there was so much sugar in it that you don't even taste the tea, I'm from the south and sweet tea there isn't as sweet as their Thai tea. Service was slow, it took over an hour for our appetizers to come out and longer for the main course, however, this was fine, my family had extra time to talk to each other through the blazing noise but if I was going just for food, it would be way too long of a wait. I found a baby spider swimming in my water glass, I was also given the wrong order but that's fine, people make mistakes and it was really busy Saturday night. Would I come back? I was certain that our meal for 10 would break the bank, but was pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived. Mango and chilies go well together, so I asked for mine to be medium hot (NOT MILD,) a 2.5 or 3 out of 5 on the hotness scale. It was served maybe a 1. It was very good, but tasted too sweet with no heat for balance. Tom Yum Gai was hot ... about 3 or 4 on the heat scale. It was very tasty, but had too much lemon and fish sauce. I've been wanting to try Basil for awhile, as I always like to support local Canton businesses and restaurants. I went tonight with my family and we were all very pleasantly surprised. The decor was quite nice, to start with. The restaurant also had a nice cocktail, beer and wine list, which offered many options that we were very pleased with. We tried a variety of menu offerings, including veggie pot stickers, calamari, tom yum soup, a few sushi rolls and five entrees (including pad kee mao, spicy peanut curry, phuket curry, spicy Korean soup and Bangkok fish). Im not easily impressed however bistro nailed every aspect of what the great dinning experience should be. As soon as we walked in the doors, we noticed that everything was clean. Not a crumb or piece of paper, speck of dirt was to be noticed. The staff was bustling about also in imacculate condition. From the bar tender to the servers to the hostess, not a stain, piece of lint, piece of hair was out of place. The only other time ive visited a picture perfect restraunt was mon'ami gabi in Las Vegas. What is this gem doing in canton ohio? Somehow we were seated immediately. Please see the picture of our dinning area I took after we shut the place down so as not to ruin other diners experience. We started out with water, beer, and two appetizers. I can't recommend which one to get because they both were equally perfect in what youd be expecting. The crab ragoon comes with four perfectly cooked pieces paired with a sweet and sour sauce that doesnt overpower the ragoon. The Thai rolls were also perfectly cooked sharing just the right amout of chicken and shrimp. it was also pair with a sweet chili sauce that blended well to bring out the flavor in each bite. My wife enjoyed the Dragon & Phoenix. I feel lucky enough to have stolen a taste. The chef obviously knows how to pair sauces to bring out the foods natural flavor. The cantonese white wine sauce will leave you with a full yet light flavor. If you perfer something more bold and robust, I recommend the Korean sizzling steak. It reminds me of pepper steak but with a different more lighter sauce. We were full with the right sized portions from our meals but couldn't pass on the triple chocolate truffle cake. Again see our picture. Every no matter how full you may be, pass on this and you'll be missing out on something really special. Price is just right. Service paired with great food made this the ultimate dining experience. The Ly family hit a home run with this place however I will have trouble understanding why a restraunt on this level is located in canton. Maybe I need to consider my underestimation of its location.
