I really enjoyed my experience at Basil. I went with my food club, so we tried a lot of different things between the three of us. Hummus and spanakopita. I ordered the gyro platter, which was very good. It had lots of rice and several pieces of pita. The pita bread was delicious, and if I come back, I will just opt for the gyro sandwich. The platter had a few onion and tomatoes, but I think I would like it all wrapped up in a large pita rather than piecing it all together. The flavors were very good. My friends each got a type of kabob, and I think they both enjoyed their orders. Then because we are who we are, we ordered four of their desserts because we couldn't decide which ones to try. They had a good selection of desserts, and they all looked very tasty! Each one we tried was very good. Got the gyro party family platter and was really happy with the food! Service was great too as they called me about my order as we were late to pick up. The gyro meat was tender and flavorful. The order came with a lot of pita bread and a generous side of veggies. I would've liked more hummus, but it was still enough. Honestly though the baklava was amazing!! It didn't taste just sweet, but you could taste the flavors in the syrup distinctly. Such a perfect ending to a great meal! I thought the price ~$40 without tax and tip was a good price also. And the portion size was perfect. I loved the flavor of their dolmas (grape leaves). They brought a great balance of acid to my gyro plate and were served warm with a little cheese sprinkled on top-delicious! My gyro plate had lots of thinly sliced crispy pieces of meat and that warm pita bread plus fresh veggies. Though sometimes I prefer larger chucks of meat, I thought the gyro meat flavor was on point. I was so happy I had leftovers for lunch the next day. The service was excellent. Basil has great freshly made food, nice folks, quick ticket times, and a convenient location if you're looking for something better than the generic burger joints and bland quick service restaurants around the capital area or this part of 23rd. While I love the area I have started calling the Mediterranean corridor (on May) that includes Mediterranean Imports as a lovely little restaurant and deli, Zorba's as a nicer sit down place, and Couscous as a Moroccan cafe and bakery, Basil fills a different niche. Among them all, it's the best for pick up, their prices are absolutely reasonable, and they have little surprises like homemade harissa paste if you like things spicy. On that point, if you order something spicy, they don't just give you a side of hot sauce, they actually warm sauté the meat in the hot sauce before it goes in your wrap or dish. That's fantastic. I won't pick a favorite Mediterranean restaurant in the city, because they are all good at things. But one of my favorite things about this place is that it never disappoints. If you're thinking of getting some garbage burger or sandwich or otherwise just feeling lazy about cooking, this will always come out higher quality, and likely be the same cost or less. Came in to eat with my family was so disappointed with service and food. One of my family members found a hair in his food and proceeded to go up to the counter to tell them all they responded with was a thank you. They did not apologize or offer to remake food or get a refund until he had to go back up there. They said he had already ate too much of the plate but most of the meat was still on the plate when he took it up there. They did finally remake the food after asking for a refund since they didn't even offer anything. Once the food was remade one of the servers brought it to him in a to go box despite us eating there and rolled her eyes at us. I seriously love this place. Great food and great service! I had the Kubideh Kabob, which is seasoned ground beef with saffron rice and charbroiled veggies. It was delicious . I also had their hummus and a pistachio roulade cake. All sooo perfect! The portions they give you are big! Several were very good, but I judged Basil's to be the best. This was not, however, my first experience with Basil's. I used to grab lunch from there quite often, until the allure of new places drew me away. Everything here is so good. I'm a bit miffed they no longer have the Chicken Souvlaki with Saffron Rice entree, as it was my go-to choice. They do still have Chicken Souvlaki as a sandwich with veggies, but not that wonderful rice. They also make some of the best falafel too because they season their chickpeas so well. I hadn't been this disappointed in a restaurant in a long time. I really really love Mediterranean food, I eat it all the time. My husband is Armenian & we eat tons of middle eastern food & Mediterranean food at home bc that is all his side of the family makes. Having just spent a week in New Orleans & Florida eating tons of creole, Cajun & French cuisine we were super excited to get a gyro & some Shish Kabob for lunch! We drive over to this place at prime lunchtime, straight up noon. The parking lot is full & the place is busy. You walk up & order, they bring you your food. Hubby got us teas & I picked a comfy booth. When I sat down the table was so sticky, my little LV bag stuck to the table! Hubby tried to clean it but the napkin just stuck to the table. Yuck. The tea hubby brought me was a saffron tea. It was pretty good. I added lemon to it & I thought it was really nice. Love the saffron tea with the lemon. The lemonade was way too sweet for us. The calamari came first & it was cooked perfectly, however the fry oil was bad. When the fry oil is bad, it makes everything bad. The calamari would have been great if the fry oil was not bad. Bummers :(( The sampler with the hummus, falafel, asparagus, yogurt sauce & turnover was a hot mess. The asparagus with Parma cheese was so overcooked it was complete mush. The Parma cheese on top was pre shredded old & dry. The falafel was the worst I have ever had in my life. Super dense, like eating a brick & the veggies inside were RAW. See photos. The hummus & yogurt sauce was bland & didn't look or taste fresh made. The turnover was also fried in the bad oil, so it was bad. It would have been ok had it been fried in clean oil. Bummers. I think it was beef, I couldn't tell bc it was so bland & tasted like nothing. The chicken was also under-seasoned & overcooked. The veggie Kabob was seared nicely on the outside but was raw inside & way way under seasoned. I don't think it had any seasoning at all. Yuck. The 2 colors of rice thrown all over the dish is just messy & bad. We eat with our eyes first. So, when a plate looks like it just got a handful of two colors of rice tossed on top, like you would when you toss leftovers in the rubbish, it doesn't look appetizing. Yuck. On the way out I noticed a sign that said this place was a Oklahoma Gazette winner for best restaurant of 2017. Must have been a different chef or something last year bc what we had is NOT good Mediterranean food. Not even close. Hubby & I also couldn't help but notice the couple sitting at the table next to us shaking salt on their food like there was no tomorrow. Yikes. Zamzam is still the best in OKC & the new place ZaZa Mediterranean Cuisine has some of the best veggie kabobs & Mediterranean food I have ever had. Plus, they both serve the Turkish/Armenian coffee. We went here last Saturday and lunch time and it was incredible! Service was fast and super friendly. We saw a lot of people get to-go orders as well as dining in like us. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated as well. We ordered hot saffron tea and it was brought to our table in a beautiful teapot with some delicious infused honey. We also ordered the dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) they were tangy, creamy, and so good! I will be getting them every time! For our entrees we had a regular gyro and a spicy gyro. The spicy gyro meat was marinated in their house made harissa and it was ACTUALLY SPICY! We also got fries as a side, they were crispy and a perfect compliment to the gyro. The food is wonderful! I get the chicken kabob which is always cooked to perfection. The vegetables are delicious ! The tzatziki is my absolute favorite. They have great service ! However, I'm vegan and they didn't have any type of sauce for me. I ordered the dolma (stuffed grape leaves) and I couldn't eat them because they sprinkled cheese on it. I took them back and the people didn't talk, and I got them a second time with no cheese. They made it right by giving me freshly cooked asparagus. This was quite good. I've been around the 23rd street area for several years now, and was pleasantly surprised at what I experienced when I walked in to Basil for the 1st time. Felt like I had been transported to the Mediterranean for an hour. There were ornate glass lamps on the ceiling of varying colors that were beautiful and instrumental music playing. Ordered the calamari as an appetizer, and it was decent. It wasn't a letdown but wasn't the best I've had either. They had a gyro burger that looked intriguing, best of both worlds right? Gave it a try, but alas - it was a marriage that was not meant to be. The gyro meat itself was very flavorful and I enjoyed eating it by itself. The burger patty tasted like a frozen microwaved patty....which is to be expected since this is a Mediterranean place. And the gyro meat would also have tasted much better with a pita than with a sesame seed bun. Lesson learned - just get a gyro next time. It was worth a shot though. Wife got the chicken bandarri which she really enjoyed, it was a large portion with plenty to take home. They have a deal where you get free hummus if you buy 2 entrees. I asked about this when ordering and was told by the owner that we did not qualify because the burger was not one of the entrees. He said he would still be able to give us a small portion anyway. This portion never came...which is fine, I realize that I wasn't entitled to it in the 1st place but I wish he'd never mentioned it to begin with. DON'T GET MY HOPES UP FOR NO REASON MAN!!
