This hidden gem tucked away in Medfield is a favorite of my in laws, so I had high expectations for my first visit, and it 100% lived up to the hype!! Think homemade pastas, stellar service, and a large menu of traditional Italian favorites all wrapped up in a cozy neighborhood atmosphere. We stopped by for the first seating of the evening on a Saturday with a large group. There was something for everything on the craft cocktail and wine menus. Our table sampled quite a few different martinis, and it was a nice surprise that even some of the fruitier options were well balanced and not tooooo sweet. (The pear and cucumber martinis were some of our favorites). They had a ton of specials for the night in addition to the regular menu, which made picking just a few appetizers and one entree each a challenge for most of us. Even the complimentary bread basket here deserves a shoutout: the housemade cornbread and focaccia were both 10/10. A few of the favorites from our table's selections were the escargot and calamari appetizers, both the eggplant and chicken parms, and the lobster and shrimp ravioli. Lobster ravioli is one of my favorite dishes of all time, and it's all over the greater Boston area. I have to say Basil's rivals any I've had before---the lobster cream sauce is to die for, I haven't stopped thinking about it since!! This place is a throw back in a very bizarre location that has no business being as good as it is. There were 5 of us and we all got different things and it was all delicious. Food is as good as you can expect from a top notch place like this. However the reception I got when I went I eat at 5pm (when they open) was icy at best. The receptionist didn't even greet us and just said, I hope that stroller is collapsible. Which it obviously is (ate at Michelin star restaurants with my kids). Then as we were being seated my son was being a little loud since he was hungry and the table next to us immediately said loudly they wanted to cancel their orders. I am a bit mixed on this place and could not believe I have lived in the area and never known about the place or even seen it. This spot is tucked away in downtown Medfield and you would never even know its there since its off the main street, tucked in a neighborhood behind the village shops. First off, this place is set up inside a house which is both good and bad, parking for this place (I would hate to be the neighbors) is tough and if you cant find a spot in the large lot across from the place, you are stuck almost parking on some neighbors lawn or blocking their driveway which we did. This place is not short on business, Saturday night their was a line out the door and unless you have a reservation, you are not getting into the place. The set up inside is tight, very odd, small booth areas in what looks like it used to be a living room, small tight cramped hostess station, bar in the back you have to seek out since its near kitchen and then an upstairs which has long banquet tables which was again, odd, but it worked. The menu here is a very large book, loaded with old school Italian dishes and speciality cocktails and an extensive wine list. The staff here is very good, friendly and fast and they keep up with the busy tables. The place is pretty loud inside and since its tight quarters its even louder. The food in this place is absolutely great, cooked to perfection, very tasty dishes, the veal parm was excellent and so was the calamari and the drinks are good as well. I was shocked, since I have not had anything close to North End Italian in the suburbs at all except maybe Sweet Basil in Needham. This place is great, aside from the odd set up inside and the parking, the prices were what you would expect and the portions are mid to large so you get plenty of food. What a treat and I was happily surprised to find a good restaurant outside Boston proper. Definitely will visit here again and may try take out as well. read more

This is a cozy find tucked away in a residential area of Medfield. We have eaten there twice. The food is excellent and the menu is varied and interesting. Most recently, I had the duck, which was cooked perfectly, and my husband had the swordfish, which was also very good. However, the service left much to be desired. First, it was slow, but that seems to be more common than not these days in most restaurants. Second, our waiter would often forget us. We asked for water refills three times and when he finally did it, he only filled one glass (we were a party of four). We had to ask twice for a dessert menu. read more

I wanted to give 1 star because the hostess was the rudest person I have ever come across in a food service industry. But I could not because the food and the service was impeccable. Our waitress Jordan could not have been better; she was funny, helpful and just super attentive. The food was phenomenal; every one at our table ordered something different and all 6 of us could not have been happier. Appetizers were great, dessert was great; definitely recommend this restaurant. Just bear in mind the hostess is rude and tries to chase you out. She even called me two hours before my reservation and was trying to get me to cancel due to overbooking, when I didn't she said " I hope everyone in your party can go up stairs because that's the only way you can come". RUDE. Then she came to our table while we were eating dessert and coffee and told us to hurry up. Tommy was very accommodating and easy to work with on the planning, and Beth provided amazing service the day of. What a delicious surprise! We were headed to another restaurant in Medfield that was closed tonight. Found Basil on Yelp and gave it a try. It is in a residential neighborhood. It looks like the location used to be a house. It is warm and cozy inside. Dark colors and a fireplace full of candles. Lots of booths. Best meal I have had in a LONG time at a restaurant. We eat out at least once a week, live in the next town over, and I do not know how I didn't know about this place! It is tucked away in a residential area. The decor and ambiance are lovely. It reminded me of old school North End. Parking is ample - there is a large lot across the street, although other reviewers have mentioned the lot gets full. The staff and service were beyond good! If I could give more stars I would. They were attentive, very nice and always made sure we had everything we needed. I ordered the chicken marsala, and hands down, it was the best I have EVER had. Generous portion, and priced reasonably. My mom ordered one of the specials and she could not say enough good things about it. You MUST make a reservation though. Could not believe how busy this place was - early on a Wednesday evening too. If you live in the area, and even if you do not, this place is worth the trip. We will be back again.
