One of my favorite restaurants for a long time. However, less than a month ago, my lunch was entirely ruined by an altercation in the restaurant. The owner's sister essentially verbally abused one of the workers who has always taken great care of me in the restaurant for being late for work that day and not completing the deviled egg prep. I have not decided if I will return, but if this were my business, this lack of professionalism from the sister berating my employees would be completely unacceptable. Let me tell y'all about BASILS. This was definitely one of my top 5 Jackson Places to eat! It's located right next to Roosters. The quality of the pizza there was just what I needed the day I came. It's a little bit pricy but not too expensive and it's definitely worth every dollar. You end up getting a lot for what you paid for. I had the MJG pizza and let me tell you eating it was worth every dollar. The cheese and sauce blend was nice and there was definitely enough pizza for me to have some for dinner later on too. The Caesar salad was nice and full too (as you can see). They also give you a piece of bread with this AMAZING sauce to accompany it (which I used it with my pizza too and it was heavenly). Another highlight that I must mention were the COOKIES. They were an impulsive buy but easily one of the best impulsive buys I ever made haha. The cookies were moist and I think made from scratch. The guy who was working the counter/phone today (4/16/18) had the best customer service and was super polite. My pizza was so delicious. My friend got the Pimiento BLT (Pimiento cheese, bacon, Roma tomato and basil leaves) with a side salad. I brought the #12 grilled chicken home to the Jr Foodie. I love Basil's pasta salad (seriously. I could eat the pasta salad as a meal). Burger buns and focaccia for the paninis are house made! On top of that, owner/chef Nathan Glenn is not only one of the nicest guys in Jackaon but also one of our community's greatest supporters. His heart is bigger than his Rooster's burgers. If you're looking for a great, quick lunch in Fondren, Basil's is an excellent option. I've been a fan for years. I was bummed when they closed their Belhaven location, but will still often trek to Fondren (haha, "trek"... it's a 5 minute ride away) for a great lunch here. The menu is mostly paninis, salads, soups and pizza and you really can't go wrong. The pizzas are really yummy and a great option for splitting between friends or coworkers in a group. The paninis are super flavorful. I love the homemade bread they make them on-- it's SO good. My favorite go-to meal is the chef's salad with grilled chicken. It's a pretty standard menu item, but Basil's uses super fresh and delicious ingredients which makes a hella difference. Their comeback dressing is really great, I highly recommend it. Located in the Fondren Corner building, Basil's is central to everything in Fondren. You can grab your lunch, eat it on the porch, and people watch as folks do their shopping and businessing in Downtown Fondren. Basil's does not offer coffee, but they're conveniently right between La Brioche and Sneaky Beans so you've got really excellent options for where to grab a cup before you head to Basil's for lunch. Hard to find, but the Panini is excellent. Drive to this address and you will see Roosters in a blue building. Park on top of the 2-story parking garage behind Roosters. Go up the steps into the building. Basil's is the last shop inside on the right, before the exit to the sidewalk. Alternatively, you could come in from the front side walk. Love this place. Everything I've had here is good. I usually get the chicken pasta salad ($8) which comes with a bed of lettuce, some veggies, a sliced fresh chicken breast and a scoop of their pasta salad and a slice of grilled bread. It's so fresh and delicious esp with the balsamic. I usually have them add a deviled egg on as well. The paninis (avg $6) are equally good - we favor the turkey with romas, olive salad and fresh mozz. The ham and gouda is great, too. I imagine they all are but I can't break away from my favorites. Their fresh bread is the key. They also do a whole panini that serves 4-6 hungry people for $24.95 - that's a great deal and a great option for casual parties or tailgating.
