We go to the Bass Pro Shop all the time but we have never experienced service like the other day. We go in to get a fishing license and pay with $30, the bill was $24something, well the cashier only gave us the change minus the $5 bill owed back. She asks if she could help us with anything else and my boyfriend said I didn't get my $5 back yet. She says she thought he gave her $25 and called her manager over their walkie talkie. The manager tells her to take his name and phone number and they'll call back if the drawer is over $5. I asked, why can't the manager come count the drawer now. She says they only count the drawers in the morning. Um, OK... but you just shorted us, so this would be a good exception. All she could say was she's sorry. Anyway, I know people make mistakes but its unfair to the customer to have to wait to hear from the manager the next day on behalf of the cashier's mistake. I know it's only $5 but have you seen the price of gas lately?! That will get me a gallon... Well... they ended up calling the next day and offered his $5 back to him in the form of a gift card... I wish I was able to rate this place twice. Going to speak on my experience on the range, and gun counter. The range: is pretty awesome. I'd give it a 4, would be even higher If they had more lanes. Offered rentals. And if the check in/out process wasn't such a pain in the arse! The range is clean, great lighting. Easy system to use for sending/returning targets. The Gun counter: They have a very nice selection of guns on hand. The pricing can be hit or miss. At times can find the gun you're looking for cheaper at a mom & pop gun store. Overall, not bad though. Not the employees that work at the gun counter. That's another story. All the times I've gone there, I've only had two good experiences with people that work there. I wish I remember the guys name that sold me my gun. He was a nice and helpful guy. And very friendly. 9 times out of 10, this is not the case. Most of the time you will stand there for awhile without getting any help. And most of the time, they act as if they know it all. Or gods gift to gun sales. So this would be the reason why I would rank that area of the store 2-1/2-3 stars. If the employees at the gun counter wouldn't act like gun snobs, they would get a higher rating. I highly doubt I'll buy another gun from BPS. But If your local store doesn't have a gun your looking for in stock. And you want to get a feeling for that gun. There's a good chance that bass pro will have that gun in stock. read more

This rating is based on other BPSs. Outdoor World is the best BPS I've ever visited. I was so lucky to live near it for five years. The aquarium is ENORMOUS and has a great diversity of fish. It also has some Native Illinois fish. The fishing section is also enormous and has everything you could want, and lots of stuff your wife does not want you to want. If you want a boat, you can buy lots of different boats here -- party barges, kayaks, bass boats, power boats, etc. They have a great camping section with lots of useful, and useless, gizmos and equipment. There's stuff I've never seen anywhere else, in fact. The hunting section is also good and they stock a huge variety of ammo. I practically live at Bass Pro Shops. If you're shopping there late in the evening, please be quiet when venturing near the cots--I'm probably racked out in the corner somewhere. Seriously, this is a great store. I won't hold being in Illinois against them. Being in the People's Democratic Republic of Illinois (PRDI) does complicate things a bit versus the freedom-loving state of Wisconsin. First, a FOID card is required by all IL residents to even look at a firearm. Second, most pellet guns and BB guns ARE considered firearms by the PDRI, though not by the federal government. I tried to purchase a Ruger air rifle, had to pay for a background check, and had a waiting period--yes, a waiting period for an air rifle. During my 24 hour cooling off period, I went back home to Wisconsin, went to Walmart, purchased the same air rifle, and returned to Bass Pro Shop the following day to get my money refunded for the air rifle still awaiting the background check. While this is certainly not the fault of BPS, it does serve to illustrate how difficult it is for Sportsmen in the DPRI. Sales tax is also higher than shopping at Gander Mountain or Dick's Sporting Goods in Kenosha. Overall, BPS has great fishing, camping, hunting, and outdoor gear and an amazing selection. Be prepared to spend hours here...and be sure to bring the kids. On weekends, there are free demos, crafts, games, etc. I enthusiastically recommend BPS. read more

Bass Pro has always been a fun place to go, and the kids love the fish tank. I've purchased several firearms from them over the years and have always had good experiences with the staff. Unfortunately, their shooting range has kind of fallen into bad repair the last few years. With my last gun purchase in Dec, I came to use my free hour of range time (BTW now they only give you a free half hour with firearm purchase, mine was doubled as an apology for waiting in line a while to pick up the gun lol) The target controls on my lane were falling apart, and the LED display that shows distance was partially burned out. They cost about as much as most ranges, but for the money, their are several area indoor ranges you can go to that are in better shape and no hassle about checking in your firearms. read more

They have numerous taxidermy specimens throughout and live fish in a huge tank located in the middle of the store. There are catfish, gars, etc. they have a huge gun selection and range on site. There is also a variety of boats and fishing accessories. They regularly have demonstrations and hands in activities for children. I love this place! read more

A huge store that has most stuff for an outdoor activity but is short in a couple of areas. They should change the "outdoor" part of the title to "Hunting and Fishing" as that would be more accurate. First the store is cool, it has a running stream, fish tanks with fresh water game fish, and a shooting gallery. They have a ton of fishing items and boats, just about any fishing tackle you can think of they have it., including fly fishing. A big selection of clothing, not the best stuff as they focus on their own brand and not all active wear. They have golf stuff, guns, knives, shoes, and archery. Plus they hold classes in several subjects. The bad is they dont carry bikes which is odd for an outdoor shop. Also while they do have camping stuff it is geared toward the car camper and is severely lacking in any hiking and backpacking equipment. An REI it's not. Still it is a fun store to walk around in and for certain applications they have great stuff. read more

BUT this review is about the old male employee towards the middle of the store who tries to sell a vacation, he is RUDE as hell and whenever my boyfriend and I go to this store, we try to avoid him from now on. I love bass pro. This store is very large and has any outdoors thing you could imagine. I always go here around Christmas and they decorate it beautifully. But I was in the hunting section looking to buy a firearm and I stood there for 25 minutes while FOUR OTHER EMPLOYEES hovered around an older couple talking. The couple acknowledged I was there but every employee did not. I finally received paperwork from some guy in the back and he handed me the paper and just left me there, he didn't come back to check on the papers, he just left me there with my dick in my hand. Not until the youngest employee there saw my obvious frustration did anyone do anything about it. I was looked over by everyone there. This will be my last purchase at that hunting department ever. This is a cool store, and this sort of store is one of the reasons we like to hit Gurnee Mills now and then. It's a very well done sporting goods store, with camping, hunting, fishing, and pretty much any other sort of outdoors supplies that you could want. But that's not noteworthy. There are lots of great sporting goods stores that are about as interesting as a Wal-Mart. This store has atmosphere. Whether it is the shooting range, or the watermill with running water, or the giant fish tank, or the overall outdoors motif, it is fun to walk around and explore, especially with kids. Prices are a bit higher than your normal sporting goods stores, but not unreasonably so. The difference is made up in the enjoyment while you shop. read more

My 2 year old son and I went there to see the fish in the big fish tank and we saw 2 men inside cleaning the tank with the fish swimming around them. My son was fascinated! One of the guys kept waving to him and then eventually started to play with my son. He motioned underwater to follow him to see a big fish he was going to coax over to grab and showed my son up close to the glass of the fish tank. He played with him for a couple of minutes until he continued on with his job cleaning the tank. This was so cool! I don't know if these guys were an outside cleaning company or Bass Pro employees, but I had to give recognition to this guy! Thanks for entertaining us today! Wow...just Wow....I mean WOW!.... For all of you add wizards out there thats 3 wow's on my wow meter. Came here after I put my local outdoor chain on punishment (read past reviews) and was simply blown away. The selection is second to none but the real reason this place tugged at my heart strings was the customer service. Employees that seemed happy to be there and enjoy what they were doing? Employees eager to answer questions and explain different approaches? Employees who greet you with a smile and arent just pushing you towards the register? Did I recently fall into a black hole sending me to bizzaroworld? I came with my heart set on 1 specific reel in mind... A fairly expensive one ($350) and instead of having a vulture drooling over the big sale and being a "yes man" I instead got a person who explained the pros and cons and was given a suggestion to a less expensive reel that suited my needs a little more in his opinion. I believe the sales persons name was ryan...skinny guy in the reel department (those who read my reviews know im horrible with names so it may have been jane for all I know but im pretty sure it war ryan) After explaining why he felt I didnt need to go all out I flipped a coin and went with the less expensive and not only did it exceed my expectations....I went back a week later and bought a 2nd one for my other rod. Although managers or higher brass may frown at a salesperson down selling they should realize that because of his honest and knowledgeable approach I returned and made another purchase...and at the end of the day thats what matters....establishing a business customer relationship and getting them back in the door. They didnt go for the kill and risk me disappointed and not coming back...instead they had a customer leave with a smile on his face and already dreaming of the return. If this is how this place operates they have this customer for life because I wont go in feeling I will be swindled or preyed on but instead cared after and directed to what works best. kudos to this place and the people who run it and for hiring people with actual people skills and enjoy what theyre doing read more

Went here looking for an axe and they Only had one that was 12" at the handle. The rest were tiny and overpriced that would be useless for wood chopping. Their selection is terrible. Also bought a pair of red duck boots from there that fell apart within the week. The staff is very friendly which is why they are getting one star instead of zero. I went here to test out my new pistol in their shooting range. I don't have any other place to compare it to, but the process wasn't that bad. At the entrance they ask for my FOID, then checked to make sure my piece wasn't loaded, then they locked the trigger and the case. The staff at the range was very friendly, he unlocked everything and assigned me to a lane (there are 5). I shot for about 1 hour and the only bad thing was that it was too hot (maybe it was just my excitement). Before I left the range, they relocked and finally got unlocked just before I left the store. Talk about secure! Make sure to call ahead and reserve a lane. Dont forget your ear and eye protection and your targets (you can purchase some at the range). Good times :) read more

I went in with my husband and 3 month old, while my husband looked around I decided to take my baby to see the fishes, a rude lady kicked us out because the store was closing we left, and she continued to be very unprofessional to the point she wanted to fight me infront of my family over the fact that a friend of ours made a comment that she lead us to the wrong door! No manager to be found when asked to speak to them! This is NOT the place to use if you need an FFL transfer unless you are in no hurry to get your firearm. Because I had a gift certificate for an out of state firearm dealer, I needed to have my firearm purchase transferred to a licensed dealer in Illinois. I picked the Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee thinking their outstanding counter service would extend to FFL transfers. That was not the case. Doing so delayed my obtaining my purchase by at least a week. First, they required I come into the store to fill out a form indicating the transfer would be taking place. They said this form would expedite their being able to identify that the incoming firearm was mine. I gave them my Name, phone number, email address and all the information pertaining to the purchase. They indicated that they would call me when the firearm was received and processed. I was told that a message from the shipper indicating the package was delivered was NOT an indication that Bass had processed the firearm. It still had to be sent to the gun department and checked in. That would add time to the processing. I was notified by the shipper that the firearm was delivered but after 5 days, Bass had not contacted me. I called them and the man I talked to told me I could come in any time to pay the transfer fee and do the paperwork to start the 72 hour wait. He said he had left a message for me "the other day." I told him he must have misdialed because according to my phone log I had not received a call from Bass. I asked what number he called and he indicated they called the number on the shipping form. It was not the number I provided on the contact form they had me come in to fill out. If you are eager to get your firearm, go somewhere else. If you are looking to buy a firearm, their sales reps are friendly and very well informed. They have some excellent Range Masters and a very clean range. read more

A place that not only offers outdoor appliances and wares but it also offers great learning experiences with the family such as different events on the weekend such as adopt a pet foundation with actual pets, falcon informative sessions with actual falcons!!!! THey sell homemade fudge, FUDGE....so delicious and in the center of the store is an awesome, awesome, AWESOME pond-like fish tank with a great variety of large fish that keep the children entertained. It's like being outdoors ....but indoors!! My kids love and if it weren't so far away, it would definitely be a place we would be on a weekly basis. read more

Great looking store. I went for walking shoes. Selection on the wall was OK, but the service was pretty lukewarm, and the size selection extremely poor. I had to wait for someone in the department to come and help me. I asked about two pairs of shoes. For the first pair, he said -- with an air of indifference -- "that's the only pair we have". For the second he went into the back and quickly came back, saying "all we have are size 8". I suspect this store is great for hunting and fishing, but my impression is it's not so great for shoes. I believe BPS is a one of the greatest outdoor suppliers out there. They have almost everything your need for a hunting, fishing and over all a camping experience.The sales people are great with finding the right supplies for you. They also help with suggesting other options that would work better for you. The environment is great with having a lodge look to the store making it feel like you are actually in the wilderness. read more

I am a big Cabela's fan and bass pro shop is right up there with them. I am from Wisconsin and hardly have been to Illinois and never have been to bass pro. Bass pro shop was located in a mall which was a little strange but definitely worth the experience. I got a shirt and was very interested in their fishing pole selection. However, the archery and hunting sections were not fantastic. Cabela's may have them beat on that but hey its bass pro not hunting pro. They do not have a good selection of large sizes but neither is any store really. My boyfriend had gotten about 6-8 shirts from Cabela's in Richfield, WI that were 5xl so we figured we could get more at bass pro and maybe even a jacket or so. Well we did find some 4xl shirts but not many. I am also not a fan of the location of bass pro probably because Illinois is way different than Wisconsin and I just prefer Wisconsin more... sorry! read more
