Fries or chips are a la carte. Minus one star because all drinks come in cans or bottles, yet in 2025 White's Ferry Grill still lacks any recycle bins whatsoever. I suggested adding them to the owners via their website and Facebook page, but never heard back. As a result, the trash can outside may be full, and tons of recyclables go to the landfill. I carried my empty Gatorade bottle with me. I would love to take the ferry again, but meanwhile, this casual restaurant and store is a gem. read more

Was in the area and heard this place was solid, so decided to check it out. I don't remember this being a grill when I used to take the Ferry, so it's definitely off the beaten path since the ferry no longer operates anymore (thanks VA you suck!). The Ringer burger here was great! Even though they cooked it past requested temperature, it was still pretty juicy. Nicely seasoned thick patty, and the bacon and onion ring really set it off. I loved their fries too; super crunchy, perfectly cooked, and very few shorties! Would definitely return just for the burgers, although the rest of the menu seemed to be solid too. read more

Wonderful oasis of good food along the trail. Nothing very fancy here, but they cater to bikers and they do it well. Our food came out quickly and it was hot and delicious. They seem to buy high quality ingredients. There are lots of great snacks that bikers love to grab and go. The bathroom outside is a portable John, but that seems to be offered by the National Park Service. Plenty of parking for bikes. read more

This little place is paradise for hikers, bikers & weekend sightseers. It's funny, several miles down the river people pay many times more for lunch not as good with hardly any view of the water. Here, you get an amazing lunch or breakfast sammie with polite service and a great view of the Potomac in a historic park reserve. My tuna sandwich was absolutely as I wanted & hoped it would be- fresh with not too much Mayo or stuff - just a bit of relish. Generous serving of tuna also. Simple & delish!! Hubby claimed his cheesesteak was "awesome" & devoured it promptly. The bread was great! I wish I ordered the onion rings- they looked amazing. As other Yelpers have pointed out there's lots of places to chill & enjoy your food. All in all a fantastic lunch on the Potomac w a wonderful drive through rural Maryland to get there & back. It took Whites Ferry closing down to get me out here. Mind you I have taken the ferry before, I just didn't think of stopping in here to experience the deliciousness I did today. We may have ordered practically everything and here's the run down: Whites Ferry burger: simple half pound burger with American cheese. Absolutely 100% delicious. Hands down my favorite burger. Tastes like homemade chargrilled burger that you can get at a backyard cook out from someone who can actually grill and make their own patties. It's juicy, it's not over cooked and pairs well with their crispy fries. Pickle sub: it's a turkey sub in a hollowed out pickle. Is it unique? Yes. It has a ton of turkey in it. Doesn't really come with condiments like mustard or mayo so other than tasting like pickle juice it might be a bit dry. Very keto friendly but maybe not a low sodium option. Reuben-Fantastic corned beef (sliced thinly which I prefer), great dressing and love the sauerkraut. This was a stand out. There are lots of park benches to sit on to enjoy a view of the river and have a picnic. I am not sure what the latest news is on the ferry but even if it doesn't come back I hope this place stays. Came here because I wanted to take the ferry across to VA but realized that it's been closed for at least a year now..... Wow! I was not expecting this quality of food at an random convenient store. Everything was made to order and the quality of their ingredients is top notch! Love the brioche buns on the burger and the patty was well seasoned. Stopped by for a bite to eat in between breaks at the pool. The weather was perfect and the Whites Ferry Store and grill was the perfect spot. We got my daughters hot dogs, my sister a steak and cheese, and I got a cheeseburger. We got some sides including onion rings and Mac and cheese. The hot dog was good and the Mac and cheese was white cheddar with shells. The steak and cheese was also good. The burger was the highlight. Straight up fire! If you come out this way, make the stop while the ferry isn't running. It's peaceful and the cheeseburgers slap! Easy 5 stars! read more

Stopped in this twice since the ferry was closed. I have to admit, I did not even know this place was worth stopping in until I saw the recent ferry press. It is excellent! We had burgers both times although I also saw a london broil (?) sandwich that also looked excellent. Staff took our orders and brought it to us outside. You can get great food, beer, burgers, drinks, breakfast sandwiches and the ONION RINGS are the bomb! We regards to Covid, they would regularly count how many people were waiting to order and ask folks to step outside if their count was side. This is a hidden gem, and we locals can attest to their incredible food, great ambiance and friendly service. If the weather allows for it, you can take your food outside and sit on the little patio or on one of the picnic tables and enjoy the view of the Potomac River at your feet. Everything on the menu is delicious, but my favorites are the Smokey Blues Sandwich, or a cheeseburger with grilled onions, pickles and whatever else you like on your burger! Kid and dog friendly (prerequisites include being well behaved for both :)), and bring your hiking shoes or bikes for an adventure on the canal (access is right there). read more

I tend to order this combo from just about any restaurant that has it on its menu, and this place knocks it out of the ballpark. A good variety of hot and cold sandwiches and subs, which are huge, and very reasonably priced ($8-$12), especially by DMV standards. Add on some piping hot and perfectly crisped sides (ok ok, I only ever get the onion rings because they are too good to try anything else), and I sometimes wonder if I make the trip out to White's Ferry (about an hour from DC) more to eat here than to kayak itself! There are many spaces along the Potomac where a sign points ahead, describing a ferry that used to run in a space that is now covered in trees. As far as I know, White's is the only ferry left, and as such has an anachronistic charm. It only takes a few minutes to get across on a smooth, cable-drawn ride; people generally don't even get out of their cars. It can get crowded and lines build up occasionally, but usually they move quickly (and if it's really bad, frankly I'd just drive up to Point of Rocks and take the bridge). You can pay in cash and it's not too much, and it lets you travel between states in one of the least settled areas around. read more

Wonderful spot to stop by and have lunch if your doing the C & O trail. They have bike racks where you don't even have to lock your bike. Everyone is super friendly and the food is yummy! Yesterday I left Haymarket, VA and headed up Interstate 270 (I-270) North to Gaithersburg to attend a friend's Birthday Party! I noted as I was heading up I-270 North that I-270 South was jammed and backed up for miles heading towards the Beltway. So I thought: "Hmmmm, it might be cleared out by the time I head home - BUT given the tendency of a lot more people to stay local due to the gas price issue - it might not clear out"- so I needed an alternate route home. Enter White's Ferry. I got my friend Glen to write down directions from their house in Gaithersburg to White's Ferry. It was a nice scenic drive up Route 28/Darnestown Road, and then down Route 107/White's Ferry Road. I've never been on a Ferry before and had no idea what to expect. When I pulled up, there was a short line of cars ahead of me - so I was thinking I might be waiting a while, but I was wrong. The Ferry itself can hold 20-30 cars per crossing. So I pulled onboard, paid my $4.00 one-way fee crossing (a $6.00 roundtrip pass is available) and then got out to stroll around the Ferry and take some pics. The name of the Ferry is The General Jubal A. Early - named after a Confederate General of the Civil War. It was dusk and the sun was setting on the Potomac River. It was absolutely a scenic and gorgeous evening on the river. I'm guessing the crossing took less than 5 minutes - but I was not timing it. The Ferry has been there since 1817 (it was originally named Conrad's Ferry at the time). After the Civil War, former Confederate officer Elijah V. White bought the ferry and made improvements to it. Yo!! Never knew this was here! Had to go to an event in Leesburg, and my GPS directed me on this route. Full disclaimer: it did state ferry route, but i naively thought it meant some type of historical overpass...but oh no, its the full deal ferry ride.. Well..technically, it's a cable tow flat bed ferry that takes approximately 5-6 mins to cross.. Great deal and actually very safe!! Highly recommend Pro tip: Cash only!! This place is a hidden gem in the northwest Maryland area. Yes, there is the historic ferry but the Grille? Wow! My Husband and I were just out for a drive and decided to check out the ferry (now closed). We didn't think the grille was open but when we walked toward the water, realized it is open! This was serendipity as we were hungry and had been doing moving labor and cleaning all morning. The young women were friendly and efficient. Our order was completed in about 10 mins or less. I had a Reuben and fries. They were both so good! They were what I would expect from a good deli. The fries were breaded, lightly seasoned and crispy! The Reuben corned beef was tender and flavorful and the bread was thick but soft and toasted to perfection! My Husband got a Turkey Reuben which he also enjoyed. The menu has a nice variety of options. The one drawback is there were no public toilets open. We had to use a port-a-potty which was disgusting!!!! There are picnic tables available. You can also sit inside of The Grille. They have bottled sodas, juices, water, beers and wine coolers. I definitely recommend making the drive to this place! read more
