What's Good This is the kind of place I generally root for. Locally owned, attention to ambience and identity, a focused menu that doesn't try to do too much, and an effort to make you feel welcomed. Batter Up Bistro reminds me of several places I've visited in New Orleans with a jazz trio playing ragtime as I enjoyed brunch and maybe a midday Hurricane cocktail. The interior is rustic chic while still being warm and inviting and I really enjoyed the beverages I ordered. The Apple Crisp Latte ($8) I ordered for my breakfast visit was hot and made me feel even more cozy. Apple simple syrup paired with house coffee blend and oat milk with notes of cinnamon was very pleasing to the palette without been blown away by apple flavor. The Baron ($15) was a pre-dinner cocktail with whiskey, ginger beer & liquor, almond bitters, and a hickory smoked finish. It was strong, but not breathtaking, a well-balanced flavor profile. What's Really Good Dinner service was suitable even if a bit slow, especially given the few diners that were also in attendance that evening. The bar tender was also waiting tables and while he was capable and hospitable, he clearly had too much on his plate running the front of house solo. I started with the Sea Scallop appetizer ($17). Three substantial scallops with a dill forward dusting sit atop a lovely, creamy parsnip puree. The puree was slightly sweet and the microgreens that were likely intended more as a garnish offered a nice textural note. The scallops were cooked uneven if I'm being honest where only one out of the three had a desirable brown crust and the other two were grayer. Dinner went up several notches with the Pan-seared Salmon ($32) which I ordered blackened. The fish was tender and flaky, and the blackened seasoning was right on target. The salmon paired quite well with the roasted Brussels sprouts, which themselves had a lovely char, and the wild rice. I also appreciated the accompanying blackberries which offered a touch of sweetness without compromising earthiness. Best Bite My first visit was a bit lonely as I was the only patron dining on a Thursday mid-morning. Perhaps the previous day's snowfall had scared others away, but I was itching to get out and about finding the breakfast selections a respite from winter's doldrums. I ordered the Eggs Benny ($20) with perfectly poached eggs atop their delightful house baked toast which was dense enough to hold up the thinly sliced ham, eggs, microgreens, and herbaceous hollandaise sauce. The sauce was rich and creamy with a pleasant punch of lemon and dill. The dish is served with garlic and herbed red skin breakfast potatoes and they were a hit. Also, a star was the side of thick cut bacon ($8) which was smokey and a perfect medium cook. Chef Cari came out to express her gratitude for my visit, which only made me wish more folks had joined me that day.

The first time I tried Batter Up Bistro, everything was great. We just visited a few weeks ago on a Sunday and though it was not super busy everything was off. It took over 2 hours to get our food and the food was slightly disappointing. First with the drinks I ordered a hot chocolate and my hot chocolate was not even room temperature. By the time the server came back 30-45 minutes later I had already finished it and didn't have the heart to complain. Next the entrees, I ordered the Naan scramble dish and it was basically an omelet inside Naan bread supposed to be drizzled with hot honey. There was so much hot honey on the bread that it was sickly sweet and difficult to eat though the omelet was actually spicy which is what I wanted. My husband ordered the play on Monte Cristo sandwich and thought it was okay though not amazing for the amount of time we waited also the berry compote didnt go with the sandwich like a classic monte cristo. Overall a little disappointing but maybe will come back another day.

Stopped by as we are not from the area for some baseball NCAA tournaments at Jackson Field. It was right across from our hotel. This place is a hidden gem. A little pricey and slow as they had one guy doing it all. Super friendly Food and coffee were excellent. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Got the life-changing BLT. Definitely lived up to its name - bacon was to die for and all very well prepared!

This is our favorite restaurant in Lansing. We have been here for our last three meals while in town for a convention down the street. The ambience is fantastic. The service is excellent. The food is well plated. Even the music is very pleasing. Just a great experience all around. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is that their air conditioning isn't working and apparently it hasn't been working for weeks. That should really be a priority as it is summertime. Other than that though, no notes.

This place has kind of weird seating. The ambience is cool but it feels like a bar more than a restaurant. I definitely recommend the breakfast sandwich. It's like the top ordered one. We had one good server although we have been here three times. Our first server Kind of was weird. He didn't give my fiancé the drink he ordered, but instead said he would give one he usually gets. And the drink was way more expensive than the one my fiancé ordered. Overall, it's good and I would come here again.

This is my new favorite restaurant!.it is listed as Auti Immune Protocol friendly and it is. The food is healthy, beautiful, the service was over-the-top wonderful and warm, and the chef came out and greeted us and checked in on how the food was. We got the burger and salmon and that is the best burger in town! The tea selection is amazing and they had fresh bread, delicious cake and such fresh and colorful produce. Great place for brunch, lunch, dinner or drinks.

People often reminisce on college -- what they loved, how they grew, the opportunities that slipped through the cracks. As someone who lived in East Lansing for 4 years, I've now experienced one of those slips, not knowing that this Bistro was here sooner. As you walk inside, there's an immediate warmth that embraces you from the thoughtful decor to the comfortable setting. The dichotomy from the outside is so striking that you almost feel as though you walked through something more than a door altogether. Most importantly, the food. I started off with a dark roast black coffee, which was rich, smooth and excellent. I then ordered a Greek Omelette while my father ordered the BLT -- they were perfect, and the immaculate plating was an embodiment of the establishment as a whole. If you're in Lansing, or EL, do yourself a favor and start your morning the right way.

This was a wonderful place to visit, the atmosphere is very warm and cozy, the decor is just enough of the right mixes and is tastefully done. Our server was very friendly and had suggestions that we accepted. The food was wonderful, the coffee was nice and bold and the house made whipped cream was the cherry on top, delicious. We will definitely treat ourselves again and they have a full bar that I forgot to mention. Only one complaint the Mimosa pitcher was quite pricey ‍

I watched and waited for Batter Up Bistro to reopen! Previous stops were to enjoy breakfast, and tonight I made my first dinner stop. It was an unexpected, exquisite treat! Unexpected as they were newly reopened adding dinner service! And, exquisite in the flavors of my main course coq au vin! Service was impeccable! My wife and I along with two friends went for dinner on 2/10/24. The place was busy yet quiet. We liked the brick wall and stamped tin? original ceiling. The place had a cozy feel to it. Two in our group ordered cocktails which were well balanced with a nice presentation. The spelt bread (made in house) service was great, and we would definitely have again. All of our meals came out hot and well prepared. Bistro burger, salmon, scallops and vegetable mornay. My wife also had French onion soup which had great flavor but was a little on the salty side. Unfortunately, there was no room for dessert. The table next to us ordered some and they said it was amazing. We had the opportunity to speak with Chef Cari, after our meal, and she provided us with a brief history of her restaurant and her cooking philosophy. We will be back. read more

This is a little hidden gem on mich ave... I stopped in on a while on a sunny bike ride. The inside is really cool...old time rustic..All restored to original...brick..and wood..and delicate plaster ceiling! It looks like something in old London! Anyway..I tried an iced coffee. And ordered the Ham-cheese-egg breakfast sandwich...Now..you must be patient here! It took about 25min to get my food..I was getting a little grumpy!! But when it showed up...Oh my!! It was so gorgeous!! Home fries so crispy...The sandwich was Awsome!! Multi grain bread..grilled perfectly...a full fried egg on each half...cheese melting off every edge! And the ham!! So delish...and warm...garnished with tiny greens and a slice of Orange and a strawberry! Thnx guy's..you made my day! read more

Disappointed. I went here with a group of 5 ladies on May 8th. The server was great. The omelets were good. But, the prices were high, reflecting what I would Happily pay to have Maitake(Hen of the Woods), which are gourmet mushrooms, in our omelets as described in the menu. They were NOT in any of the omelets, only regular button mushrooms. I know that most people wouldn't realize that that they were missing this high ticket item, but I have gathered these Maitake mushrooms(& many other gourmet types) in the woods myself & know what I'm talking about. On discovering this, I spoke to the server(a sweet young woman), she apologized & checked with the kitchen. She came back & said that they told her that they'd not had them for Months!! And that they had been unable to get them from their distributor( in Grand Rapids). Which I am also very familiar with as they have a stall at all the different farmers markets in the Lansing area. Which means that they have representatives here selling gourmet mushrooms almost every day of the week. So they easily could get a different gourmet mushrooms as a substitute & validate their prices. I was not offered a discount. I feel this is a dishonest practice on their part. read more

Batter Up Bistro is a small cafe-like restaurant, but don't be fooled by its cafe appearance. This place has the most amazing food I've had in Lansing in a long time and deserves more recognition. The staff was kind and welcoming, the owner even came to our table and greeted us. I think the picture can speak for itself as to the quality of the food here, definitely worth stopping in! read more

Wonderful food and wonderful people. My wife and I found ourselves in Lansing as our son, a MSU student was hospitalized. The owner Cari, fed us a fantastic lunch and even offered us her car. To top it off she made an outstanding cake for my son, who "celebrated" his 19th birthday at Sparrow Hospital. Cari and Mary, Thank you for everything. PS - The hospital staff loved the breakfast tray we brought them when he was finally discharged. read more

I'm not a reviewer by any means and the fact that this review is based on a private party setting doesn't help either.... BUT: the setting was very flexible and afforded seating for 2,4 and up to 8 without moving anything; the ambiance was very comfortable and laid back with muted lighting. The staff were knowledgeable, very friendly and could have handled serving royalty (if any had been around!)... they were right there with everything that you needed. OK. Service and Ambiance: CHECK! Now for the FOOD! Like I mentioned when I began all this, I'm not a reviewer, but the food was GREAT! A cutting board stocked with a variety of cheeses, nuts, berries, crackers started us off on our adventure. Wines to suit your palette followed by fresh salad paired with delicious dressings; a buffet style offering followed. The chef worked miracles in my mouth! All the selections complimented each other and were delicious. And the evening was topped off by cheese cake and coffee... there wasn't a single individual there who didn't give stellar compliments to the staff; a thoroughly enjoyable and delectable evening! An aside: we were there on the weekend, so parking is free at the meters. read more

Batter up bistro was such a great find this afternoon! My partner & I went out for lunch here today. Walking in was like walking into a posh vintage shop/cafe. It was so lush and atmospheric! We seen bistro and thought it would be a cute stop for lunch but walking in I thought it would be super pricey! I was impressed with the mid level prices about $10 each sandwich which kinda expensive but at the same time the atmosphere was amazing in a cute downtown area and the food was seriously Beyond amazing! The owner Keri (i hope i spelled that correctly) is such an amazing cook! The bread was amazing and the cheese and vegis were so good! My bf ordered a grilled cheese on home made bread and it was amazing! I forgot what kind of cheese but it was great. I ordered a veg sandwich & I don't think I could have made a better choice because it was literally perfect! Eggplant, tomato & balsamic with some other vegis too. It was perfect topped off with a glaze of reduced balsamic! The food was super presentable I can tell the owner is beyond passionate about her bistro. On the way out We also spotted lots of sweets and pastries!! We will have to come back! I was told they opened in October so this is a newer place. read more

This is our new favorite lunch spot in Lansing! The restaurants' ambiance brought us in, the excellent food will bring us back again. My wife and I each ordered a chicken salad. They were brought to us quickly. We were pleased with the freshness and combination of vegetables. The meat was seasoned to perfection. Our waitress was very friendly and informed us the food was locally sourced, and organic -- a big bonus for us. Plus, they make all their salad dressing from scratch. Can't wait to go back and try other menu item. So many excellent choices! read more

I've never seen a place with more wasted space. It's like a pier one imports but you can't buy any of the junk. They need a sign that says order at the register. Need way more food options. The bread was fantastic. The Tim Tebow book on the fireplace was sort of LOL but whatevs. read more

Likely to be considered in the top three venues in Lansing. Lunch today was wonderful, the service attentive and genuine. The salad was fresh and original and the dark roast coffee as good as an upscale hotel. I look forward to the next visit. One can't eat at Soup Spoon every time. read more

My daughter and I came in for lunch for the first time and were blown away. The food was delicious. We had the BLT and the chicken sandwich. High quality ingredients, homemade sauces, and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is homey and comfortable. We couldn't get over how friendly the staff was, especially the owner. She cared to know more about her guests. When we were leaving, we were admiring the baked goods and the owner (with Thanksgiving approaching) gave us some to try and take home! We will definitely be back- one of our new favorite spots!! read more

Amazing flavors sock you right in the mouth. The Lemon Brioche was hands down one the best pastries I have ever tasted. Highly recommend the food. The peach cake gave it a run for its money also. Go try this. You wont regret it. read more

First time at this bistro and was very pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant of this quality. We were there for breakfast. Although a limited menu, there were enough choices and variety of egg dishes. The potatoes and home made bread were delicious side dishes. Everything is prepared as ordered so plan to have a leisurely meal. Portions are generous. There are freshly made bakery items too. The organic oatmeal with berries, nuts and a dollop of yogurt was the best I have had and a very large portion. They also serve lunch and brunch on the weekends. LookIng forward to going back again soon. read more

Had breakfast there today and would recommend you going elsewhere unless you don't mind paying over $40 for nothing spectacular (2 people). Ordered bacon that came out raw so I asked that it be cooked a little more crisp. Returned literally charred. If you don't know how to cook bacon at a place that only serves breakfast (limited choices) and lunch, you're not going to last. read more

Excellent breakfast/lunch food and excellent coffee. Classic cooking done very well. What Envie brought to Lansing for dinner, Batter Up is doing for breakfast and lunch. Preparation takes longer than at a diner, the result is worth it. Bread and pastries are also very good. Have been here three times in last eight weeks for breakfast/brunch/lunch and have had consistently positive experiences with food and service. read more

I've been excited to visit Batter Up since they opened. I finally got a chance today. It was disappointing. The food was very good, but the service was slow, slow, slow. After a quick greeting from the waitress, it was 15 minutes before she got me a menu, 20 before taking my order. It took 55 minutes from the time I walked in to get my pancakes and bacon. And it wasn't because they were busy, there were only 6 other guests in the place. As I said, the food was very good, the atmosphere is terrific, but I doubt I'll be back. I don't often have time for an hour and a half lunch. read more

A really cute little cafe. I remarked to my partner that it looks exactly how I'd decorate my dream restaurant. The bread is to die for. I had to take half my sandwich home because it was giant! I understand that the hours are probably due to the place being so new, but 7-2 means that lots of working folks in Lansing won't get a chance to try this gem. I keep telling my friends to go but they're never able to because of the hours. A shame because it's such a fabulous spot. read more

A friend and I were attending an event in Lansing, and we thought we get out early and get a bite to eat and coffee (visit too). Very quaint place with old school vibe. Loved the original tin ceiling. The coffee I had was called a pour over (which I had never heard of), the flavor was awesome, little strong for "my" taste, but that is my taste buds, other that great. My friend had a caramel mocha, which she stated was delish and ordered one to go. The owner came and greeted us and asked how our coffees were, she very polite (as was all the staff) and welcoming. We had breakfast, just some scrabbled eggs/toast and organic oatmeal. Oh did I mention it is all organic. Definitely remembering this place. Perfect!! read more

Shoe: "I saw a TikTok yesterday where someone talked about getting so drunk that they peed in their closet at 3 AM, and it reminded me of that time you got drunk, woke up in the middle of the night, and relieved yourself on that pile of clothes on your floor at Stormy Garcia (the name we gave our apartment based on its previous occupant). Oh, good times. Anywho, happy holidays!" Oddly, this story has been coming up a lot lately. Before you hear it from someone else, I'd like to go on record. This is my 8 Mile B. Rabbit vs. Papa Doc final rap battle story. The prelude is a little foggy, as this happened nearly twenty years ago and there was alcohol involved. I came home trashed from whatever Wicker Park hipster dive bar I chose to be over-served at that particular night and immediately passed out in my twin bed. I remember having a very vivid dream about needing to pee, but being far too tired to walk the five steps across the narrow hallway to the bathroom right outside my room. I had the brilliant idea to just go on the floor, squatting off the side of my bed. This is genius. I should do this more often. Great idea. I'll just give it a quick Swiffer in the morning. Everyone's gonna be doing this. Zzzzz. When I woke up, I was dry, fully clothed, but something was suspiciously off. I never have dreams that are as clear as that. It's normally an H.R. Pufnstuf bowling-alley strike-screen jumble--. I had, in fact, gone off the side of my bed but into a laundry basket full of my clothes. Not just any clothes. Clothes that had been recently laundered, folded, and had just been minding their own business, waiting to be put away. I remembered this godawful moment for the next nineteen years with a shiver of mild embarrassment. One day, absolutely out of the blue, I reconnect with an old friend. The kind with benefits, backdoor privileges, and a copy of my apartment key at the time. He recounts the exact same story with vivid details, not because I had shared this with him previously, but because he was a primary source. He was in the bed with me, trying (feebly) to dissuade me, and then forced to watch while this all transpired. How the hell did I block that part out? "But I know something about you. You went to Cranbrook. That's a private school." I still don't know what this information was meant to accomplish. As if private education was going to un-do the laundry basket. The Avenue in downtown Lansing reminds me of this moment and of being twenty-three years old again. It's messy, it's weird, it's a bit skanky, it's mixing every spirit behind the bar with reckless abandon, and it couldn't possibly be more fun. I've only been there twice, but it always seems to be "Ratchet Night," which I respect deeply. There was an amateur drag show the last time I was there, so I found myself hobnobbing with the who's-who of the Lansing-area LGBTQIA+ scene. This included a girl in a gimp mask and a bartender dressed as a literal clown. Face paint. Lavender pigtails. A polka-dotted hat with a pom-pom on top. Whatever. It doesn't really matter, because this clown made me one of the best drinks I've had in a very long time. It was a pistachio espresso martini, and it was a work of art. Real pistachios. Whipped cream. It took at least five minutes to assemble. I wanted to order ten more, but on a busy Saturday night, I could not bring myself to be that person with a high-maintenance drink order. After I mixed many exotic drinks together, I took to the dance floor and absolutely destroyed it to I'm Lookin' for the Hoes by Sexyy Red, followed by that seminal work on big jugs, Tia Tamera by Doja Cat. The rest is kind of a blur, but I do remember getting a shoutout from the emcee before I left. They said, "Judith hit so sticky." I said, "Thank you very much." Bent the whole world over and said, "Spank you very much." Nah, I'm just playin'. I went home and got sick in a sink that night. At least I didn't ruin a hamper, though.

The risotto was prepared perfectly by someone who clearly knows how to make a proper risotto--it was not gluey and set-up, but perfectly tender and creamy. The seafood was delicious. The scallops were seared nicely and not overly salty (something many restaurants don't understand is that you typically don't have to salt shellfish as it is salty/briny on its own). My boyfriend's mahi was sizable portion on top of an ever so slightly sweet and spicy coconut risotto. His was fantastic as well. We also enjoyed the sautéed zucchini that came with both..also nice and hot! -we had a delicious bottle of wine with dinner. After we paid for dinner and left with our remaining wine, we promptly came back in because of the heavy downpour of rain. We sat back down and finished our wine. The things that could be ever so slightly improved: -the lighting in the dining area is fitting of the decor and vibe of a nicer restaurant but the lighting at the bar is just too bright. Could maybe benefit from dimming them and possibly adding a few candals oe the small table/rechargeable lamps along the bar as it seemed wide enough. -the shrimp on the risotto should be two larger shrimp (8-10 size ) rather than the very small shrimp that don't seem to fit the vibe of the dish -there were only two options for dessert...maybe another one or two would be great -a little birdie told us that the restaurant will be having a happy hour menu soon (and a second location). We would LOVE for you to add some truffle fries with some sort of aioli...we can envision ourselves stopping in for those and some wine...often! Great addition to the limited higher end restaurants in the area. We look forward to many more meals there.
