I heard a rumor that this place had cinnamon roll pancakes, naturally I had to check it out! The restaurant is mid-sized with a fair amount of seating to include a small belly-up station, diner style. Parking is abundant as it is located in a large plaza. We were greeted warmly and seated almost immediately and the service was attentive and friendly. We opted for the cinnamon roll pancake combo and the biscuits and gravy. Each were served with choice of potato and egg, the pancake combo also came with choice of meat. The portions were just enough and the flavors were very good! The sausage gravy was flavorful but needed a little doctoring with a few dashes of pepper. However, the cinnamon roll pancakes stole the show! The perfect balance of fluffiness and cinnamon roll yummy goodness! They are served buttered with a frosting drizzle, no need for syrup here! The food was great. The service not so much. I came with a group of friends because it was someone's birthday. Horrible experience at this breakfast place. My mom ordered sausage, assuming it was links and she didn't care for it when it came-- too much fennel. She told the waiter and he offered her the sausage link instead. Great! We waited forever for what eventually came which was one single sausage link split in half. Fine. Assumed that's because it was a courtesy, not something that she would eventually have to pay for. Maybe the waiter should have clarified that he wasn't replacing an order of sausage but adding an order to our bill. The next part of the experience was way worse. Bathroom checks by staff should be mandatory!!! Either someone spilled a dirty diaper on the floor and it was stepped on by a shoe multiple times or just someone missed the toilet and it was stepped on by a shoe multiple times. I had their very simple light breakfast, egg scrambled, turkey sausage patty and sourdough. The egg completely overcooked, dry unbuttered sourdough toast and dry lukewarm sausage. I honestly don't get how we can wait so long for such a disappointing experience! And, btw, had to ask for out table to be wiped clean after we sat down: Side work most likely non-existent here since "common area" condiments like jelly, salt and pepper could use a wipe down and refill. It's kinda gross for dining out. The staff very friendly though, but the core to any restaurant is the food and it's super mediocre, I cannot recommend. read more

I'm all in for an omelet, chicken and waffles, grits, and more strips of bacon than anyone should be proud of. Bring on Square One Breakfast & Bakery in the Hannah Plaza in East Lansing- an amiable and unassuming café with house-baked goods and a friendly staff. A short stroll from campus, this eatery hits the mark on flavor and convenience for the MSU community- where students, faculty, and families are welcomed. The house-baked items are a treat, but I wish there were more options available for takeaway. I'd love to be able to just pop in, grab a croissant or something sweeter with a cup of the Saugatuck roasted Uncommon Coffee and bound into my day. The Good Over the course of my visits, neither I nor my dining companions had a bad bite. The waitstaff and managers are all extremely kind, both with their effort and their personas. I could see a high level of rapport with the café's regular customers, but I could also feel the genuine care and appreciation for myself as a newbie. I was fortunate on one occasion to get the last available table, but while a busy floor would mean a dip in service, the Square One crew checked in regularly and were very attentive. On to the menu: The Spartan Feast included scrambled eggs, home fries, two choices of meat (bacon and chorizo for me) and biscuits and gravy (which I will return to shortly). The chorizo was marvelous- not too spicy, allowing the cumin and garlic to shine through. The eggs and bacon were cooked nicely, but I would've preferred the potatoes to be a bit crispier. My companion ordered the Wake n Bacon burrito packed with scrambled eggs, green onion, avocado, home fries, and plenty of bacon. This breakfast handheld isn't for the faint of heart- it is hearty, cheesy, and can be paired with a crispy hashbrown, similar to one found under the shiny arches in corporate land. The BLT was solid as well, offering a copious helping of bacon and fresh ingredients piled between two thick slices of toasted sourdough. The Better Any place with challah bread on the menu will automatically have my attention. One that uses the challah for French toast is striving for greatness and even more so when the toast is stuffed with a cream cheese filling and topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. It's sinfully good. The blueberry buttermilk pancakes are also very tasty, balancing the right amount of fruit without overbearing the fluffiness of the cake. Also, very good were the Maz Benedict with two of the scratch-made English muffins, which had the appropriate level of sponginess found in authentic muffins from my travels across the pond. The eggs were poached perfectly, the hollandaise light and flavorful, and the house-made sausage was good enough to order a third patty to share. The Best My friends, let me bring you in on a little secret, the biscuits and gravy at Square One are among the best I've ever eaten. Seriously, a colleague and I are still talking about them several days later, and I only offered them a single bite. First off, the biscuit (of which my companion had their own, served warm with honey) is outstanding. Perfect buttery morsels baked from scratch on-site, it was flaky and soft like those found in kitchens of generations of yore. Coupled with the gravy's chunky bits of savory goodness, the dish is rich and creamy with notes of sage and other aromatics. If only I could get a dozen biscuits to go, I absolutely would. read more

The biscuit, crispy outside, buttery, with a nice crumb. The gravy, rich with chunks of sausage. Eggs cooked as ordered, and the potatoes (also covered in gravy) were crunchy. We arrived at 10:30 on a Sunday and added our name to the wait list. There are 6 booths, 7 small four-tops (more like two-tops), and 7 counter seats. We kept checking our name on the list and, after an hour of waiting, we noticed that there was only one party ahead of us. After that party got seated, a booth opened up. We thought -- that's for us! Nope, they seated someone else. My husband immediately went up to check, and our name was crossed off!!! Having stood for over an hour -- 6 feet from the wait list clipboard, you can understand how upset we were. It would be another long wait for a booth, so we settled for a table. The person who crossed off our name apologized and explained that he crossed off our name because our phone number didn't include the area code, so the call didn't go through. There are two logical things he could have done at that point: 1) Try adding the local area code (517) to the phone number, 2) call out our name. We were literally standing 6 feet from the "please register" sign. Be ready to wait to order your food because the server has to wait for a tablet to become available, then wait again for your food to arrive (at least 1/2 hr.), then wait again -- can't pay until their mobile device is available. Oh, and the food? The toast was good, and their butter packets are wonderful -- bigger than normal. My husband's burrito was leaning on the cold side, and the omelette was okay. I sat at the bar which didn't feel too comfortable, they staged dishes for other tables on the bar next me a couple times. Service was fast and friendly. Nate and I went to Square One Breakfast & Bakery while in town recently and the food was so good! There was a bit of a wait when we arrived around 10:30 am on a Sunday. The space isn't large but we were seated within 15 minutes. The menu has a handful of breakfast sandwich options, omelettes/scrambles, breakfast plates, sweet options, and breakfast burritos. Everything sounded so good, it was tough to decide what I wanted. I landed on the hamtastic sandwich - ham, egg, swiss, American, tomato, and dijon mustard. You can get your sandwich on a biscuit, english muffin, or croissant; I went with a croissant. You can add hash browns or home fries, loaded home fries, or fruit for $2-$3.50 The loaded home fries are covered in melted cheese, bacon, green onion and comes with a side of sour cream. Yup, sign me up! Nate got the Hot Karl - sausage, egg, cheddar, grilled onion, and green peppers, with a side of fruit. The food took a bit of time to come out, but when it did, it was hot and looked delicious. The loaded home fries were awesome - pretty salty, but perfectly cooked and the amount of toppings was great. The hamtastic was so tasty! I would ask for extra dijon mustard next time, because it's my favorite and I love it. The egg was nicely cooked and cheesy, and the croissant was perfectly flaky and buttery. We liked the hamtastic a bit better than the Hot Karl, but both were very good. Prices were very reasonable for the portions and quality - I believe their baked goods are made in house and the cinnamon roll looked fantastic. Husband greatly enjoyed his meal, and was very impressed with the cilantro sour cream and the whole dish - and he is the discriminating one. I did enjoy my Nutella French toast. The bread was very good. My only'complaint' is, given the thickness of the bread, I would have preferred more of the Nutella, it was too sparse in relation to the bread. The breakfast is made very quickly but yet has such high quality, and the staff here are very friendly. The biscuits and gravy are especially to die for. Homemade quality! I had it as part of the Spartan Feast when I was here. The staff always go above and beyond to make sure you feel right at home. Not to mention - the prices are very reasonable too! Just note that it can be difficult to find a spot here over the weekends if you are trying to dine in, so do keep that in mind as the interior is a bit on the small side.
